"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" by Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter Thompson practiced total immersion journalism. This form of reporting is called gonzo journalism.

Hunter Thompson drove to Las Vegas to report on a motorcycle race and ended up writing a story about himself writing a story about a motorcycle race. If he would have written a conventional report on motorcycle racing it would have been interesting to motorcycle enthusiasts for a few days. Since he wrote a gonzo story he had a very wide canvas and he used it well to create a classic.

The reader might be turned off by the obstreperous behavior, extreme self indulgence and offensive inconsiderate language. If you can look past this offensive conduct and you will see that Hunter Thompson gave us an insight into the American character of the 1970's.

One of the most acclaimed reference books on field care for hunting and fishing, the book covers (in detail) practical advice on how to handle both small and big game (clean-up procedures, how to skin and preserve fish for mounting, animal skinning, caping, incidental applications, and more). Truly a important instructional book that should be part of any comprehensive personal (or organizational) hunting or fishing reference library.

Despite when this was written, Mr. Tome was evidently so literate that it is easy to understand even today. He paints a fascinating picture of what life was like in Pennsylvania in the late 1700's and early 1800's

EXCELLENT book from a bygone era
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
Born in the 1800's, Mr. Woodcock relates his experiences from 50 years in the "tall timber". Ahead of his time, he expounds on the wisdom of closed seasons and game management. If you enjoy hunting; if you daydream of life in the mountains; this is a MUST read! In his folksy 'down home' way, he tells story after story of the rugged life in the mountains of Pennsylvania, as well as hunts in the west and south. If your son (or daughter) is new to hunting, GET THEM THIS BOOK! READ IT YOURSELF! Oh, to have been born in that long ago, forgotten era! Being from Pennsylvania myself, this has long been one of my favorite outdoor books, as I am sure it will be for you.

Harlem boxer Stormy Rhodes and his lover Carlos face homophobia and violence, yet also find warm support in unexpected quarters. Their story plays against a background of boxing in Atlantic City and Madison Square Garden, the bars and streets of Greenwich Village, and New York's gay pride parade. But the final reckoning must be in the ring.

I am job hunting at the moment. I belong to a voluntary group (...). I found this book so useful to help with the stages of unemployment, that I am mentioning this book on our email distribution list. The family members and friends of the person who is laid off will also benefit from this book. It is great to refer to @ the worst points in the search.

Excellent resource. The author is sincere and knowledgeable - I even called him and he was very responsive to my questions. Not to mention the book being a complete page-turner. But it also has a personal touch, which is sorely missed in many real estate resources these days.
