This is my favorite flying book of an extensive flying library. Although biased toward WW2 fighters this exceptionally well written book of an airline pilot from the thirties and forties is a must read. Some of the hair raising experiences of this pilot would most likely have made me never start my fifty five years of flying if I had read it first. The primitive flying conditions and equipment used in the early days of the airlines and in the military while flying the "Hump" in WW2 will chill any pilot.

This is one of the best books ever written about flying. Gann was a pilot at the beginning of commercial aviation in the United States and a pioneer in the World War II transports. He writes of his actual experiences and describes in detail how everything can get out of control quickly, and how his training by others came back to help him in several tight situations. I have reread the book several times, especially the chapter entitled "Ice", which describes the experience of airframe icing, one of the most dangerous threats to flying. I have read several of Gann's books, and as both a sailor and pilot, I can identify with the joys and dangers of each. His autobiography, "A Hostage to Fortune", reveals what a unique man he was. Anyone interested in flying and especially pilots, should read Fate is the Hunter. Do not watch the movie! It has nothing to do with the brave men written about in the book.

`Alan Simmons' Faunal Extinction in an Island society is as enjoyable to read and as hard to put down as a good mystery. ...this is a thoroughly fascinating book, and one that should be read by everyone interested in island biogeography, extinction, the human colonization of unoccupied landscapes, and the prehistory of the Mediterranean.' GeoArchaeology: An International Journal, 15:4 `Faunal Extinction in an Island Society is a "must-read" for anyone interested in island biogeography, endemic Late Pleistocene island faunas and extinctions, and Mediterranean island colonization and cultural adaptation.' "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" by Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter Thompson practiced total immersion journalism. This form of reporting is called gonzo journalism.

Hunter Thompson drove to Las Vegas to report on a motorcycle race and ended up writing a story about himself writing a story about a motorcycle race. If he would have written a conventional report on motorcycle racing it would have been interesting to motorcycle enthusiasts for a few days. Since he wrote a gonzo story he had a very wide canvas and he used it well to create a classic.

The reader might be turned off by the obstreperous behavior, extreme self indulgence and offensive inconsiderate language. If you can look past this offensive conduct and you will see that Hunter Thompson gave us an insight into the American character of the 1970's.
