In today's world children do not have as many opportunities for physical activity as they did in the past. Years ago children walked to and from school, whereas now times have changed and it may no longer be as safe for a child to do so by himself. Because of changes and circumstances in today's world limiting the amount of activity children can get, it is important to try to incorporate some sort of opportunity for physical movement into a child's daily routine. "404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids" is written to provide some ideas of just how to do that.
The book is geared toward teachers of children age 3 through 9 and is filled with tons of opportunities to create movement. Not only is movement important in a child's physical development but it also has positive effects on a child's social and cognitive development, as well as promotes creativity.
With each activity listed there are icons next to it that allow you to determine with a glance certain characteristics about the activity, such as targeted age, appropriate group size, whether or not the activity is advanced, if you need props or space, if physical contact is involved, and/or if you need to draw on skills that were previously taught in other activities. These icons are very helpful in sifting through the activities to find one that is appropriate to your situation.
The activities in the book range from the very basic to the advanced. At one end of the spectrum are "Arm Circles" and "Standing Star" which are movements that look exactly like their name implies. At the other end, one of the activities listed is called "Human Links: Division" and reads as follows, "Call out a number such as two. To answer, the students would link in groups of four and two, or six and three, etc., to show numbers that would divide to produce that answer."
"404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids" is a great book for both teachers and parents. My children had a fun time doing some of the activities in the book and every time that I am working at the computer they ask for a new one to do. With 404 activities listed I am going to be able to keep them busy for a very long time!

This is simply the best book I have ever read on the subject of training hunters and jumpers. Chamberlin provides a detailed explanation of conformation of the hunter-type horse, methods of breaking from the colt stage with emphasis on resistance-free training, and more detailed information on how to bring about a true hunter with training proper. I have ridden and owned horses for several years, have read countless books on this subject, and find Brig. Gen. Chamberlin's approach refreshing and right on target. This is an "old style" approach to riding hunt seat and jumping, but valuable nonetheless and enlightened, particularly concerning the forward seat in the saddle and movement of the horse. I find these elements missing in many more modern books on the subject. To conclude, anyone who desires to ride hunt seat or jump should read and analyze this particular book - it will be of immense help.

This is an older textbook in the field fluid mechanics, published in 1959, and was co-written by a number of contributors including Appel, Hubbard, Landweber, Laursen, McNown, Rouse, Siao, Toch, and Yih. Like other classic texts, the basic equations provided are still the underlying principles of fluid dynamics. The text gives an introduction to research in fluid motion, then covers fundamental concepts and equations, irrotational flow, two-dimensional flow, laminar motion, turbulence, boundary layers, and free-turbulence shear flow. It contains example problems with solutions. It is recommended as a basic reference in fluid dynamics.

This is by far the best turkey hunting book I have read. It is very well set up and reads very well. It's broken up into sections that explain every aspect of the hunt, including tips for bow hunting, eastern turkey, Rio's and all others. It also explains how to roost a bird and pre season locating, a very important part of getting your spring or fall bird. There is an All-star line up of pros that give input and share the knowladge that they have built over years of being in the woods . This is a book that you could read every spring and still gather usefull info. So pick up a copy and enjoy, happy hunting

An Adventure Guide to The Canadian Rockies by Brenda Koller Having been to the Canadian Rockies numerous times and thinking we had seen all the wonderful places before we discovered this book, we now must plan many more trips there to explore all the other incredible places described in detail in this Guide. With numerous beautiful color photographs, most of which are by the author, this guide is a treasure because the scenery of the Canadian Rockies is some of the most spectacular in the world. A unique feature of this guide book is that it includes hiking details for each of the areas described. Since we have hiked many of these areas, we know this is a necessary and vaulable tool for planning hikes. With each section Koller has Hikes, Drives, Sights, and Activities, so for non-hikers it is just as valuable, also giving information for booking guided tours. The Canadian Rockies have so many wonderful places to discover and some are quite hidden unless you know where to look, as you will with this guide. Everything from camping to exclusive hotels and restaurants are catalogued also.

Out of all the travel books I purchased for my Alaska trip this one proved to be the most entertaining and useful. When I recieved this book I expected just another guide book but I couldn't stop reading - the anecdotes and suggestions were as compelling as a good novel. It felt like a nice, long letter from a friend who wanted to be sure I had a great trip. While traveling I found most of their suggestions right on the money. I tried the activities they suggested and was glad I steered clear of their warnings! It turned out to be the only guide book I brought along that I actually used regularly on the trip. One draw back is that there are very few maps of the smaller local areas and the maps that are included do not give you a sense of scale. Also, the title is a bit of a misnomer, I almost did not order this book because I thought "adventure guide" meant it was only for sportspeople, kayakers and campers. But that is far from the truth, this book is great for the independant traveler who wants a leisurely trip, as well as a person who wants something a little more challenging.

If you like to hike, swim, snorkel, mountain bike, or pursue another active hobby while traveling, you will probably find this book a valuable guide for the Hawaiian islands. It is an overall guide, and I think you will probably also benefit by supplementing this book with a specific guidebook oriented towards the island(s) you are spending most of your time on. Avid snorkelers (I am one) will also benefit from the Malinowski series on snorkeling in specific islands in Hawaii. The best feature of the book is a list of the "top ten" adventures on each island. Useful for penetrating the immense amount of information to identify the most unusual or spectacular attractions on each island.

"101 Quick-Thinking Games and Riddles for Children" is a collection of games and riddles designed to "encourage concentration, reasoning, patience, an understanding of numbers, the use of logic, and working with letters and words. They enhance memory skills. They help to develop social abilities and teamwork." (p.1) The activities in the book are designed for teachers of children age six through ten.
From a quick glance in the corner of each activity's page you can tell whether or not this activity will work for you by the icons pictured there. There are icons telling the size of the group needed, whether or not props or space are required, if there is physical contact involved or if it is an outdoor activity. The icons are very beneficial in that you do not have to take the time to read through each description in order to find out if the game is something that would be applicable to your situation.
The first part of the book has 101 games and then the second part of the book has 65 riddles. The games start out fairly simple with one called "Quick Lineup" in which children are split into two groups. Each child writes down a number on a piece of paper and then everyone in each group lines up in numerical order. The first group that completes the task is the winner.
The games become increasingly more challenging and end with an activity called "Mystery Letter" in which one child goes outside the room and the remaining children decide on a "secret letter." When the child comes back into the room he asks the other children up to ten questions which the children answer using the letter somewhere in the word. The guessing child attempts to find the connections and guess the letter.
The author, Allison Bartl, is the author of many books for children, some of which are of similar format to this one. She is an experienced elementary-school teacher so she definitely has the background necessary to create fun, educational activities for this age group. Though most of the activities are geared toward children in a classroom setting the majority of the activities can be modified so that parents can utilize these ideas at home with their children. "101 Quick-Thinking Games and Riddles for Children" contains a lot of creative, fresh ideas and I think that any teacher, parent, or group leader would find numerous activities inside that they would be able to use!
