How to be a NurseReview Date: 2005-10-20
Chapters include Basic Needs of a Person; The Nursing Process Defined; Achieving Effective Communication; Values; Ethical Conflicts; Challenges, and many others.
This is truly an all-in-one "What is nursing about?" book. I am a pre-nursing student and purchased this to get a feel for what I will be doing as a nurse. I highly recommend it to pre-nursing and nursing majors.

A great tale of hunting and life's lessonsReview Date: 2006-12-10
It is this exploration of life's lessons, the boyhood to manhood theme, that makes this what I would consider a borderline classic. There are so many wonderful vignettes about life, about women, about learning one's chosen profession, it is the kind of stuff that a 40-50 year old man would like to convey to his son, but the son will, unfortunately, have to find them out on his own. I have never hunted for ivory in Kenya, but I felt that I could identify with virtually every one of the situations that Rod encounters in my own life. The naive but enthusiastic young man goes off to make a name for himself, doing something that his family doesn't appreciate or understand, but he is drawn to it nonetheless. His life evolves in unexpected ways with many personal triumphs and defeats. By the end of the novel, he starts to understand what is really important in life. The novel terminates with Rod making a great choice (at least it is the one I would have made!).
There are several relatively minor things that I didn't like about this book. First, virtually every one of the British characters in the novel uses the word `bloody' or `bleedin' in every spoken sentence. Not every Englishman speaks like this! In fact, in my experience, most don't. Second, I found some some, but certainly not all, of the secondary characters a bit cliched and one dimensional. It reminded me of some of the fiction of Louis L'Amour. The book is relatively short (my edition has 177 pages of text), some small bit of space could have used to better develop some of the other characters. Third, the price is a bit steep (currently just under $14 as I write this review) for a paperback that comes in at less than 200 pages. These are minor quibbles though, and shouldn't prevent anyone interested from buying the book.
Finally, it is clear that Mr. Stone has considerable knowledge about both hunting and firearms, and a great respect for wildlife and for nature. This is certainly a good adventure story, and there is lots of shooting, a few fist fights, and dangers to be faced in the African wilds, but there is really so much more to this novel. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to Mr. Stone's next novel (which from his website is supposed to be about boxing).
This is not a review, but a commentaryReview Date: 2006-10-23
I am posting this because it was brought to my attention by a customer who wished to purchase non-fiction works that there was no indication that this story was fiction. I checked and he was correct. It is of course my desire to sell copies, but not under false pretenses. The book description listed above is a simple excerpt from chapter one and gives no indication that this is a novel. I have emailed Amazon to try to correct the problem, but that may take a little time, so the following description should clarify the situation temporarily.
Description: Ivory Hunter is the story of a fictional character by the name of Rod Parker; an adventurous young man who finds himself bored with his tedious job at a Pennsylvania steel mill. In the summer of 1900 he quits his job, leaves his long time girlfriend Elizabeth Durham and strikes out on his own to seek his fortune in the hunting fields of Africa.
In Africa he lives out his childhood dream of making a living in the wilderness, but he soon discovers that learning this trade the hard way can be an extremely dangerous pursuit. He survives his first dangerous encounters with African wildlife and he soon comes to realize his childhood dream of earning a living with a rifle and enjoys the monetary wealth that he has gained from being a successful ivory hunter.
In time he discovers that money cannot bring happiness and contentment as he lives a life of heartbreak and tragedy. Despite the loss of his wife and his best friend, he trudges onward in his restless pursuit of wealth and adventure. Then after fourteen years of hard work and heartache he finally discovers that true happiness lies in his relationship with others and not in the tremendous wealth that he has acquired.
Ivory Hunter is a fast paced action tale of courage and loyalty set during the golden age of the ivory trade. Be with Rod and his faithful tracker on the trail of big bull tuskers and feel the tension as he levels his big bore express rifle on the dangerous beast bearing down on him.
Please accept my apology if anyone else has purchased this work under the assumption that it was non-fiction.
Sincerely: Frank J Stone

A Word Finder that can make a difference!Review Date: 2001-10-15
As the author points out in the introduction, many employers now use a scanning system to screen resumes. The scanning process involves the selection of certain key words. But which words?
This book can help you include the important words and terms
Part 1 is a word finder. From ability to zealous, you will find key words, their definitions, and a variety of synonyms. Use this part as a thesaurus to add interest to your resume. To make the point that you are enterprising, you can also say you show initiative, are active, aggressive, ambitious, etc., all the way to venturesome.
Part 2 is a career index. I would say it, too, moves from A to Z, but in this case it's accountant to program director, radio. Under each of these key occupations, you will find a list of words to describe skills, responsibilities, and attributes.
There is also an index of positions which relate to these key occupations.
I'm a career counselor who is enthusiastic/excited/exuberant/keen/willing to recommend this book to someone who is feeling stuck about preparing career materials.
