Compelling stories for cat loving 10 year old girls

I'm afraid I can't tell you about the narrative of these books featuring various clans of cats but my 10 year old is under great pressure from her friends to finish each volume as soon as possible so they can read them too. The books must be captivating because every night my girl who happens to be an animal lover keeps asking for "just a few more minutes" of reading when I insist it's time for lights out.

What a great series this is! I read the first book from the library, because I wasn't sure if I would like it. But from the second chapter onwards, I was hooked. These books are exciting and sometimes touching, but always gripping.

When I started the series I found it mildly interesting. As I progressed I became very attached to it. Now I am really involved with the clan.

At least one of the authors as well as the editor(s) have no concept of the proper use of tense (singular and plural). I do not like the use of Erin Hunter as an author when "she" does not exist. It is more than a pen name it is fraud.

This book makes you think. This is not a fantasy tale read, not a candy for the mind book, it is a moving story that really makes you think. A book that I can finally read, and recommend to just about anyone just because it is that good. The author has a lot of courage to speak about anything close to this subject, let alone delve straight into it head first. I hope the book and author get the prominence they deserve.

Excellent resource

This is our "go-to" book for very practical descriptions and diagrams of process and procedure. We are planning our new house, and are incorporating elements of off-grid solar/wind power, rainfall catchment, passive ventilation, and high-mass wall construction.

Nothing beats a hands-on experience, and if you can visit either the CalEarth site in California, or the Earthships site in New Mexico, you should. You get a much better understanding of the process of earthbuilding, and also of the finished product. Then, as you begin to plan to build, gather all the information you can. "Ceramic Houses" will give you great information on design principles and on philosophy; the Earthship books by Mike Reynolds give primo information on the plumbing and electrical systems, and in particular on rainfall catchment.

"Earthbag Building" however, remains our mainstay. Hunter gives such good detail, and provides excellent resource lists for materials, and also lovely line diagrams that are very clear and easy to follow. And to truly make her the Queen of Bag Building, if you e-mail her a reasonable question, she answers!

Earthbag building, a method developped by Nader Khalili, is a wonderful innovation in building. It means that a building be built from materials found on site, even if those materials are too poor for rammed earth or mud brick. I've already used the techniques in this book to detail two public buildings! The trick is now to convince the structural engineer and councils...

Detailed, and well-written.

Being pretty new to hunting and only having 2 full seasons under my belt I felt that I didn't really have the knowledge required to be an effective hunter. My confidence in the field wasn't all that high and I was looking for a good book that could fill me in on all the things that I didn't understand. After reading the reviews on this book I decided that this was the one I was looking for and WOW I was right!

Everything is covered in this book! After reading it I really feel like I have a much better understanding of whitetail behavior, plus, I'm much more confident. It's not just about deer either; it addresses so many other aspects of hunting. It covers, gear, firearms, proper shot placement, and that's just for starters.

I can't wait until this fall for deer season. I know the only way to become a true veteran hunter is to spend years in the field, but this book will certainly give you a boost if you're looking for some good knowledge!

Very informative book.

I own 60+ books on whitetail hunting . If you hunt whitetails on public land or big woods in north/northeast states and Ontario you should own this book.

This is my first book on deer hunting (or hunting of any kind for that matter so accept this review for what it's worth). Being new to hunting, I wanted to find a book that would give me enough knoweldge about the topic so as not to embaras myself too badly when I went hunting with my friends who invited me to go deer hunting with them this fall. From what I've read so far, this book is better than I expected. All the advise makes sense and is presented in a very straightforward manner. It goes through great pains to explain as much about what to expect when on a hunt as it does about deer and their habitat.

Tarkovsky's 'Sculpting in Time' offers a fascinating glimpse into this master's theoretical and poetic approach to his craft. Reading it alongside with 'Time Within Time', his diaries collected, the text casts a new light upon the work and mind of this artist of truth and sacrifice - A true must for art lovers worldwide.

I was introduced to Tarkovsky's work about 20 years ago during my time in film school, and The Sacrifice was the movie that turned me on to his outstanding cinematic legacy. The more I saw, the more I wanted to learn about the artist. Then I came upon Sculpting In Time; a cinematic memoir which has forever changed my life, and my artistic visions.

This book is nothing short of inspirational. I highly recommend it even if you are not familiar with Tarkovsky's work. Each chapter is loving written, eloquently detailed and profoundly insightful on topics such as the importance of sound, story and visual aesthetics in filmmaking. Tarkovsky's ability to, quite literally, sculpt cinematic moments in time in each of his films is nothing short of genius.

Thames & Hudson have triumphed with what collectors might regard as a limited edition, artist's book. This isn't the place to start chipping into Tarkovsky. It is more the devotee's piece - a touchstone which alludes to the magnificent ediface of his films: all which return the viewer to their world with a deeper, more spacious vision, an expanded present moment. In 'Rubelov','Solaris', 'Stalker', and,'Sacrifice', to name my favourites, he re-invented the epic with sustained inquiries into our transience without heady verbalism or vanity. To grapple with his own thinking about his achievements and how he positioned himself as an artist, one should seek out,'Sculpting In Time,'penned towards the end of his relatively short life. Recently, French documentary-maker, Chris Marker('Sunless') compiled a stunning homage to this Russian cinematic master. Bits of Tarkovsky's aforementioned book, and excerpts from his diaries appear with the reproduced polaroid snaps(the present book's theme)which fall into two geographic zones, Italy & Russia and are bookended with short tributes by two Italian friends. Every effort has been made in layout to convey the darkened atmosphere in which the illuminated materiality of these world's float to the viewer's eye. And in images barely larger than matchboxes this scale has some of the hallucinatory power of his movies. The layout & medium insist on episodic, fragmentary framing. Tarkovsky's films privilege the same exquisite framing with a sensual appetite for textures above narratives that makes us feel newly arrived at a primary experiencing of the world. These polaroids could have served as his flexing towards film projects: even their outtakes.

A true master book from master film maker!

Sculpting in the time represents one of the most expressive eloquents statements of one of the supreme masters in the cinema art as Andrei Tarkovsky was .
All long this book you will read several aspects of the man , the thinker , the poet and above all the unvaluable reflections about the art in general and his craft in particular .
Tarkovsky makes an account about all his filmography ; making a detailed and exhaustive explanation about every film .
You will understand in all his wideness conceptual some concepts derivated about the role of the cinema in the actual world . The influence of ancient directors , his opinions about the role of the artist in the world , and some mesmerizing photos from his films as Ivan' s childhood , the Mirror , Nostalghia or Andrei Rubliov . There are some poems from his father Arseni Tarkovsky who were part of films such The mirror in the Spanish Civil War and the poem from the poet from Nosthalgia for instance .
It's a must for you to acquire this book . For me it was a delightful surprise to get this text in New York in 1995 .
Fundamental artistic legacy from this russian ( 04-04-32 / 12-29-6 ) master: in memoriam!

Cinema as an Art form

"Sculpting in Time" is truly an amazing work of art in its own right. Certainly filmmakers have written books about their artistic styles in the past. Philosophers have written elaborately on the subject of aesthetics as a whole in the past as well. And yet "Sculpting in Time" offers those with aesthetic interests something truly unique.

It should be forewarned that Tarkovsky, like Ingmar Bergman, was heavily interested in aesthetic philosophy. In fact Tarkovsky's ideas regarding art borderline the metaphysical (as this book is often used in higher level philosophy classes), and yet - through the tone in which the book is written - "Sculpting in Time" manages to appeal to the average Tarkovsky or cinema studies fan in such a way that no other aesthetics book has managed.

Tarkovsky's self-written "Sculpting in Time" is an amazing supplement which describes the brilliant filmmaker's use of filmic techniques but also goes a step further by explaining (at great length), why the filmmaker believes those techniques are significant. The value of his tried efforts to create a meaningful work of art directly relate to Tarkovsky's view of art as a whole.

Tarkovsky's views of art are complex and yet are reiterated for the reader so simply they stand out in "Sculpting in Time" like a gem. For instance the underlying theme in Tarkovsky's writing is the idea of an "absolute truth" of art which can be derived a given piece of art. Without giving too much away, Tarkovsky's beliefs, as expressed in his chapter "Imprinted in Time" mostly, is simply that art done for the right reasons - containing some form of objective truth within it - serves to link us (subjective beings), with an "absolute." From that blooms Tarkovsky's entire creative aspect fans of his films know and love him for.

I have to recommend this book to anyone interested in aesthetics, cinema studies, or Tarkovsky. I think this is a nice supplement to have when watching Tarkovsky films as well, so it might just serve to spark the interest in a philosophy buff to check out a few Tarkovsky films! Enjoy!

Having had, as many people did, my first taste of Ralph via Hunter S Thompson's books, I found this to be a great introduction to the Hyperactive and frantic style of a dude who is probably my favourite artist. This has a forward by Hunter, gives great colour examples of his works in the realm of Gonzo, and also has many written, poetical works, and songs. My fave piece is 'Stand up and be counted.' IE: The maverick beast will ALWAYS raise his head in the crowd. A perfect definition of Gonzo.

My mother and I read this book together as she sat in the hospital getting a blood transfusion. It articulated what we thought was an experience somewhat unique to us. Turns out there are universal experiences in this life. :) My mother has been dealing with a 6 year protracted battle with ovarian cancer (stage III diagnosis) and has had 3 recurrences. The psychological landscape described was sadly familiar and consequently reassuring. As a caregiver it was particularly transforming: I loved the section about the value of defense mechanisms (as well as their downside). I highly recommend this book for both patients who have survived or are currently dealing with cancer as well as caregivers who need to have more insight into their loved one's psychology and mental needs. I am hoping that there are more books like this one out there.

Honest talk about the aftermath of cancer treatment when every one expects you to return to 'normal.'

If you are wondering when you will feel normal again, or when you can go back to your old self, this book is for you. The cancer experience is something that most people just don't understand, even close family and friends unless they too have gone though what we have (even if they were right there beside you). These authors are the real deal, been through the 'war' and will discuss issues that you will not get any place else, written an honest and straightforward manner. They have walked the path, stood in our shoes, this is not just someone talking to you who thinks they understand, they do get it.

Reading this book meant so much to me after my cancer treatments. I wish I could personally thank the authors for writing this book from the bottom of my heart. I have read just about everything out there and this book is absolutely the best.

This is a very interesting book. I have know about female ejaculation for 15 years now. I just love to help women get to this point in their sexual life. With my new girlfriend, I am not able to bring her to this type of orgasm yet, so I thought that this book might help. As soon as I received it, and showed it to her, she took it from me and is reading it right now. She said that she should practise on her own in the beginning, according to the book. She is not done with the book, but everything I've told her what happens and how to make it happen, was confirmed in the book. When I have her close to the ejaculation point, she cannot quite relax yet to let it happen. By the time she finishes the book, she'll be ready! It is just nice to be able to read and learn this valuable, exciting, fun, wet and sexy thing to do with/for your partner! Get it or you won't GET IT!

When I first heard about female ejaculation I was a bit skeptical. Now I am a very satisfied believer. This book covers basic female anatomay and the different types of orgasms a woman experiences. She gives detailed instructions on how to stroke and achieve ejaculation. I wanted to surprise my husband and thought it would take some practice to be able to ejaculate. I was wrong. I followed her instructions and gushed in pure pleasure. I couldn't wait until he got home to show him. Needless to say it was a great night. He loves it when I squirt on him. It makes a great massage fluid.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn how to female ejaculate, or wanting to add a little spice to your love life.

The movie made from this woman's life, The Inn of the 5th Happiness, was great. This book is even better. There are more miracles told of, and of course it is free of any Hollywood add-ons. This is the story of a parlor maid who feels a call, of all things, to go to China. She meets only discouragement and is told by a local missionary board that she is not qualified. But Gladys audibly hears from YHWH that she is to go. She saves her pennies and takes a train, alone, from England to China!

On the trip Gladys just barely escapes being abducted by greedy and lascivious (to put it mildly) Communists who think she could be useful as they think a missionary is a machinist. When she gets to China - where she speaks not one word of the language - all she has to greet her is a 73 year old missionary living in virtual poverty who had prayed for a young woman to come and replace her. Good thing. The elderly lady died in about a year. Gladys became an inn keeper for mulemen, and a government foot inspector (the Chinese law was saying women could no longer bind their feet.)

Wherever she went she preached the Gospel fearlessly and won many converts, including the local Mandarin who became a great friend of hers. Along the way she gave up her dream of one day marrying and having her own children. But she had plenty of children - I think about 20 officially, some abandoned, orphaned, or bought from those who were going to sell them for evil purposes. She also managed to get 100 children - 3 to 16 years old - over "impassable" mountains, mostly alone and mostly with only the meager food they could beg in their war ravaged area. They needed to reach a Christian missionary orphanage and did so - though at the cost of Glady's health in many ways. As always, people who give up all to follow Abba's call are very humbling, and when they triumph against all odds, we are inspired. What was also encouraging to me was that Gladys was not a bulwark of faith every minute. She sometimes questioned our Heavenly Father, and called out to Him in desperation like all the rest of us. And just as with us, He often answered her prayers at the very last minute!

Though this little missionary had many hardships and trials, I'm sure she would not trade with those of us who sit reading her story in luxury in our climate controlled homes, with full bellies. I guess only those who live so fully dedicated to Yahusha ever really know what true adventure is, or what the truest fulfillment really is.

"When the saints go marching in" I would guess this humble little lady will be among those placed at the head of the line.

inspiring life

What an amazing woman - I first heard her story as a radio drama on Moody radio, and was so facinated I had to read her life story. If only there were more like her today, what tremendous growth the kindgdom of Christ would experience!

This is an amazing book that I happened upon by accident. I have shared it with others who were impressed when reading about the life of this unassuming missionary. It was truly inspirational. I highly recommend this book.

Get this book!!!
You won't be able to put it down, there are many books and even a movie (made Hollywood style, which Gladys didn't like) but the movie let me know about Gladys Alward

But this book, written withe the help of a Christine Hunter, gives Gladys Alward's story in her own words!
