A Lot of Useful Greek in a Short Time
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-03
In preparation for a trip, I checked out several book and tape courses in Greek. The Hugo course struck the right balance between total immersion on the one hand, and just learning select phrases on the other. This series will give you a quick grounding in the language though it is not as complete as the Barron Foreign Service Institute tape set. The Hugo audio quality is much better than Barron's, and the speakers are quite a bit friendlier. (The Barron series sounded like it was recorded in a garage and the speaker was about as friendly as a police interrogator).

After working with these tapes for about two months I went to Athens. I'm pleased to say they worked. People could understand me without trouble. However, one gentleman asked me where I learned Greek. I sounded like I was stuck in the 1950s. Perhaps it is the difference between Katheravousa ("official") and Demotic ("popular") Greek. So, I may have sounded a little stiff, but most everyone understood me.

The bottom line: this is the best Greek tape and book course I found for someone looking to learn a lot of useful Greek in a short time. Highly recommended.

I have searched for a book/audio course that would teach me the language rather than help me memorize phrases. All the packages at the library were for travelers so they could make sure they "get a room with a bathroom." I wanted to learn the language to be fluent. This book/audio teaches you the language! It includes exercises, both written and oral, as well as an essential grammar section. The four accompanying tapes are very well done, easy to understand, and follow the 290+ page book. If you're looking to learn the language, you can't beat this course for the price!

When I read for the first time this book, I wasn't expeting too much, but it really surprised me. GURPS Japan brings to you a complete description of the social classes and the code of honor of the Samurai, the "bushi" of the legends and history in the feudal Japan. Is very cool meet a lot of friends and try to interpretate the honor of being a samurai, or to understand the essence of this marvelous game. The complete description of the weapons and the costumes is very interesting too.

This is one of the most interesting rpg supplements I have ever read. There are so many interesting historical details in this book which can enhance any rpg campaign set in Japan. It is far superior to Oriental Adventures in the Dungeons and Dragons system. Even if you are not a role player, this supplement can provide interesting information for anybody interested in historical Japan. I definitely recommend it highly.

Make sure you are home with a day off cuz you wont be able to put it down! I finished it at work at 3 am (night shift) and to read in the middle of the night without falling asleep is saying something. I hated the book to end. There is something for every woman in this book and oh does it make you feel better! Felt like I was having a wonderful journey with a strong kind woman who really shows what Jesus Christ is all about. You will just keep shaking your head and saying, "My, my" as you read because its so stunning. Enjoy! Buy this one!

I am new to heirloom machine sewing. This book is a great reference. I have a martha pullen pattern, and for the price of the patten, i wish the pattern was printed on better paper. Next time i will refer to this beautiful book instead. It is clearer that the pattern instructions, and the photos are much better than the pattern drawings.

There are quite a few projects, easy to more involved - tea towel, pillowcases, apron, nightgown, ladies blouse (pattern included) which can be embellished as you wish. This book is actually quite open-ended - you can embellish the items however you want, using the techniques you've learned once you've read it cover to cover, but there are of course the pictures, to find inspiration. Materials (fabrics, laces, galloon, etc) are discussed, Techniques are of course sewing lace to lace, lace to entredeux, lace to gathered fabric, puffing strips, and pin tucks. Dying laces is discussed also. I recommend the coffee and vinegar dying instead of tea - i have done this and it works great!

WOW, I really needed to read this book, it tells the truth about what we women need to know to prevent heart attacks, a must read for any health conscious girl!

A Diet and Supplement Manual for Your Heart
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-03
In "Her Healthy Heart" Linda Ojeda summarizes hundreds of articles and other resources dealing with heart disease and health. (The tone of the book, although easy to understand, does take one a college paper flavor.) The result is a guide jam packed with information on how to keep your heart thumping.

Although much of the book can be used by either males or females, in certain areas special attention is given to factors which influence women.

Ojeda starts by explaining what heart disease is, how we test for it, and risk factors or associations for heart disease. After laying down this foundation, Ojeda moves on to lifestyle factors that are under our control: diet and vitamin/mineral supplementation. Each nutrient and supplement which affects the heart is detailed, including where it is found and what benefits or detriments it brings.

Finally, Ojeda discusses behavioral factors that affect the heart. This section is rather terse, although realistically it is outside the realm of one book to discuss both diet and behavioral factors.

Strangely, although exercise is mentioned throughout the book as a factor, there isn't any section to help structure an exercise routine. This means that unless your heart disease is very mild, you will likely have to get information on how to structure a program elsewhere (it's not hard--internet resources will suffice for most), since heart disease tends to have many different causes involved.

Nevertheless, this is an excellent summary of heart health. Every sentence offers something of practical use to you. Indeed, after borrowing this title from the library, I am looking for a used copy to purchase, as it was so full of valuable information taking notes would be too time consuming.

Excellent, historical account!

This is a beautiful read, that displays the hardships, determination, and stamina of a generation long gone. Few people were cut from this cloth at the turn of the century, and even fewer are today. Sheldon was a close friend, and travel companion, of President Roosevelt. He was an enthusiatic student of nature, and an avid hunter. Though some here would look down on him for hunting, he is the classic example that hunters(including Roosevelt) were responsible for protecting these wild places. Hunting even today, pays the bulk of the monies to protect and preserve America's wild places and wild things. Hunting practices of today are almost nothing like they were at the time this book was written, and this is an important account of how things used to be.

This is an excellent account of the lifestyles and the rugged men that explored this Country. I highly recommend this book to those of us that aren't afraid of the truth. Those with a Disney idea of the World around them, might find this book offensive.

One of the Original Hunter/Conservationists

Review Date: 2003-11-16
Charles Sheldon exemplified the conservation-minded hunter-- and while that may seem a contradiction in terms to some modern readers, Sheldon and his companions were the moving force behind many of our parks and wilderness places. This book details Sheldon's adventures in Alaska hunting bighorn sheep, during which he also gathered museum specimens and came to appreciate the glory of Alaska's landscape. The adventures he had are often told in a self-deprecating way which downplays suspense, but his gentle good humor shines through, and his descriptions of the landscape and its beauty make you feel as if you are seeing them with him. Some readers may feel that the pairing of such aesthetic appreciation with the constant shooting of animals jars-- and in terms of modern nature reading it does!-- but it can also transport us to a time when hunting and wilderness appreciation were inseparably linked for most Americans. Sheldon killed a lot of sheep, but he also was the force behind the creation of Denali National Park-- and perhaps the only voice for keeping (at that time) the Native American names for both Denali and the park, although Congress chose to name it after McKinley. Overall, an interesting hunting narrative & window into past views about wilderness, written by a man with a mild but charming personality-- one of the few big-game hunters you can imagine enjoying going camping with!

How They Met is an excellent book that cuts to the core of common (and uncommon) relationship issues. The depth of insight portrayed in the self-examinations of Bill reveals much about the author's own ability to introspect. And the warm understanding and solidity of Sue were a welcome delight. I do think that the character of Miriam was a realistic expose of a woman obsessed, although some of the more dramatic escapades later in the book bordered on fantasy and unbelievability. Still, they made for an exciting storyline and succeeded in getting the point across of how disruptive such behavior can be. The story gripped my attention and I turned each page, avidly wondering what would happen next. And although the book ended, not with a happily-ever-after ending, but with the realism of a life filled with ups and downs, challenges and successes, joys and sorrows, I also could feel the underlying victory of a contented life. It makes my heart sing. A must read for anyone who dreams of a conscious, growth-filled relationship with an equal.

Allan Hunter is a gifted writer and How They Met is a riveting and suspenseful story. Therapist, Bill Staniforth is a man whose life is overturned by the very person he is trying to help. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Hunter could resolve the problems of Staniforth's collapsing life. Hunter brings us within his characters' psyches and explores their deepest inner lives. A compelling read - you'll never forget it's power.
