All The Young Dudes is a fantastic read. The author had access to the founding members of Mott and uses this inside information to paint a thorough picture of how things were; how the members thought about various times of their careers; the ups and downs; David Bowie, etc. For instance, I didn't know that Ian Hunter was the bassist for the New Yardbirds. Or that he played with Ritchie Blackmore once. But I don't want to ruin all the surprises. Suffice to say, it is a fantastic book. Complete in every way. You couldn't ask for a better or more thorough biography. There are lots of rare pics and a complete discography too. I loved this book!!

Whether you are a Mott/Ian Hunter fan or not, you can enjoy this book. Although the early background/biography sections aren't as interesting as the career of Mott The Hoople, this book is very entertaining. It shows the inner workings of a legendary band, and in the process, the inner workings of the music industry. This book is easy to read and a must for Ian Hunter/Mott fans. These guys had a lot of funny things happen to them as they became unlikely pop stars.
This is one of the best books I have ever read.

Great stuff - Good Doctor with pace

I had read The Good Doctor and enjoyed it plenty for great characters, great writing and a slow-building, relentless tension. The Quarry has the same great characterization and prose, but nothing at all slow about it. The beginning of the story is enthralling, both the introduction to the main character and the first incident at the quarry (best not read liner notes etc more max effect). What continues seems a combination of Greene's "Power and Glory" (in terms of "feel") and Coetzee's "Waiting for the Barbarians" (in terms of suspense and pace). A fantastic aspect is the power of the not explicitly stated (e.g. main character's real name never revealed, ). And the construction and build-up to the denoument is something Tolstoy - like. The Quarry is clearly another example of the spectacular literature of South Africa.

In this stunning novel, Mr Galgut tells the story of a fugitive from justice hitchhiking in the desolate backdrop of South Africa and who is picked up by a driver, a minister on his way to a remote parish. When the minister discovers that the hitchhiker is a fugitive and confronts him in a disused quarry, the response is lethal.
This novel is a masterpiece featuring a story and characters utterly compelling. The author shows that even the quietest spots on earth can seethe with repressed violence. A blunt and tense read about guilt and evasion of truth. Justly enough, Mr Galgut has been compared to the greatest South African writers like Andr? Brink, Nadine Gordimer, J.M. Coetzee and Achmat Dangor.

I really enjoyed this book. The stories are short, but full of emotion. They bring back memories of good times. There is some sadness in the book, but the author looks at it in a positive way. It's a must read if you enjoy personal stories of trimuph. I like the authors style of writing. She makes the images real in your mind, as if it is happening to you. I look forward to other books she might write.

This is definately one of the best books about hunting the whitetail deer I have read in a long time. Very refreshing. If you are looking for a how to kill a big buck book, this is not it. However, if you want to read a book that transports you to your favorite whitetail haunts this is for you. I found myself not only remembering vividly past hunts but also the feeling of those hunts and the characters involved. This books helps get us in touch with answers to the age old question - Why do we hunt? What makes hunting so special? Don't get the impression this is a heavy philsophical read, it isn't. Just a lot of fun. A truly great and entertaining book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a nutritional book for children. In my opinion, it is the best book on the subject. We searched for just the right book and this is it. I loved that it was so thorough, covering everything from great general nutritional advice to chapters for picky children, underweight children and overweight children, exercise and more. I am thankful it does not recommend diets for children but instead takes the approach of making good, heathy food choices. I loved the recipes and have tried many. My kids love the banana muffins in particular. I love the sample week long menu plan. My only disappointment with this book is that her some of her recipes, such as the banana muffin one, do not call for whole wheat flour. We have adpated those to using all whole wheat flour or at least half. This is a great resource that you will refer to over and over again and well worth the money.

Transferred to Britian, in this second of the series, one brother's fair coloring makes him valuable as a scout and spy, while the other brother's high birth wins him a place on the Legate's staff. Their rivalry continues, set against a love story as one becomes the escort of a Barbarian Princess. This one's not a loaner!

Sanitzed Beatle Biography - Still Life of the Beatles

Review Date: 2007-02-01
Although this book captures the Beatles like a still life, it is an excellent starter biography of the World's Best Band. This book takes readers down the Long & Winding Road of each Beatle; readers learn about the Beatles' origins and immediate families.
The photographs are delightful; one smiles at young John Lennon, instantly recognizable. Paul with his younger brother is easy to identify as is Ringo as a very young boy. George, a winsome lad with thick, wavy hair is readily recognizable - a picture of George at his first dance in 1958 shows a well groomed boy with the trademark smile and profusion of wavy hair. Readers are treated to the "maturation" or progression of each Beatle.
The book dodges many a sharpened dart; there are no salacious stories or affairs reported in this Beatle biography. It is a cleanly framed portrait of the boys who formed the World's Greatest Band and readers will undoubtedly enjoy this one.

I read this book with great enthusiasm. Its age gives it a unique and fascinating historical perspective. John and Cynthia were still married, Apple was a brand new venture, the Apple Boutique was still in business, "Magic" Alex was still an "electronics expert," Jane Asher had not yet consigned the early Lennon-McCartney notebooks to the trash, and Brian Epstein was still in the closet. The narrative is obviously sanatized, but it also contains interviews with Aunt Mimi and Fred Lennon and others. At times it reads like a well-researched term paper, but the frozen-in-time point of view gave it a special charm that any fan will enjoy and appreciate.

Dave told me four years ago he was going to write a book. He was kind enough to share thirty years of acquired knowledge and history with me. I figured it was going to be just another book about some off the walk theories on how to train a bird dog like the other books that I had read on the same subject. Little did I know. Dave's book is a nuts and bolts yet simple approach system on training your bird dog from a pup to a finished dog. It is money well spent.

Keep the book Close By, Dave has done all the Research Work and it's all right at the back of the book for fast reference!
I thought I knew just about everything there was to know about training and field trialing until I read Dave's book... What an eye opener! Lucky for me, I got the book in time to apply Dave's methods to my now six month old Brittany. And Don't fret, Dave addresses the training of all Bird Dogs, not just Brittany's. And most important, he teaches the Trainer how to be a Trainer in clear simple language. If you don't have this book, Get It! Best Investment for any Dog owner!!! Thanks Dave!!

Ralph Cotton has thrilled me for years with his stories. My favorites have always been the Ranger Sam Burrack stories, but Mr. Cotton has taken his storytelling to a new level in Blood Lands.
Near the end of the Civil War in Kansas, rogue militia units are roaming the state. One unit engages in wholesale murder and extortion to achieve their goals. They murder the Shawler family and hunt down the one member who escapes. The Wilder family shelters the survivor. The men are killed and Julie Wilder barely survives the ultimate torture and humiliation.
Baines Meredith is a bounty hunter who finds the murdered family. He is surprised Julie survived and takes her to Umberton to an old friend. He stays in town and oversees her recovery and provides protection.
The Army decides to investigate and brings the militia to help. Julie believes the militia in the parlor murdered her father and violated her but can't prove it as they wore masks.
When the militia frightens her into leaving town, Julie heads to Baines Meredith's home. She does not want him to fight her battles but to teach her the skills to fight them.
In a riveting ending Julie faces her demons and conqueors them.
Mr. Cotton has created a heroine that is strong and resourceful. Baines is a hero who complements her and shows her the key to survival.
The writing is crisp, fast-paced and accurate. The story is well researched and comes alive as Julie learns to live again. Well done, Mr. Cotton, well done.

The year is 1865. Around the town of Umberton, the Kansas Border Miliia are part of the reason this palce is called Bloody Kansas. At the farm of Harvey Shawler in Missouri, Captain Ruddell Plantz and his so called militia soldies take what they want from the dirt farmer. In their wake they leave death and destruction. All the family members are killed except young Jed Shawler who witnessed the whole bloody affair. Plantz can not let the boy escape to tell the regular army what took place on the farmstead.
In Umberton, Colonel Bertrim, his former sergeant Shepherd Watson and his daughter Julie Wilder bring in a string of horses to sell. The colonel does this in defiance of Plantz and the captain's request of all to pay a tribute. The three riders are spotted by two of Plantz's gunmen stationed in Umberton to keep an eye on the town. The captain sends one of his men to follow Jed's tracks. The boy is found by Wilder and his riders. The colonel refuses to turn the boy over to the militia man and instead, takes him to the Wilder Ranch. Leaving Julie to watch over the boy, the colonel and Shep ride out.
Along the trail, Wilder and Watson are surrounded by the captain's men who gun the two down. The hard cases continue on to the Wilder Ranch to search for the missing boy. Julie makes the mistake of going out to meet the militia men. The gunmen, now wearing hoods, beat and rape the colonel's daughter. Warning her to leave the area, she is left lying naked in the dust as they ride off. Bounty hunter Baines Meredith rides up to the ranch and sees Julie on the ground. He takes her in to Umberton to be cared for. Once the gunman's business in town is finished, he rides off.
Julie, once recovered from her ordeal, rides out to find Meredith. At the small spread of the bounty hunter, Julie learns from Baines that there are many ways to deal with those who killed her father and violated her. She also finds out a little about herself as well. In BLOOD LAND'S, Ralph Cotton gives us a fresh new approach to the west and the violence that often times prevailed. BLOOD LAND'S will grab you from the beginning and not turn you loose until the climatic ending.
