ADVENTURE GUIDE TO NAPLES, SORRENTO, AMALFI COAST BY MARINA CARTER is another of Hunter Publishing Company's excellent travel guides. This one has a fascinating introduction which gives not only the history, but also breaks down and explains the art and architecture into specific periods of history, which gives you a thorough appreciation for what you will see and experience on your trip. There is a section of where to go, what to see, places to eat and shop, and sporting activities and entertainment in each area, including phone numbers and websites to contact for each. The book explores Naples with its history and art, then the 60 mile Sorrento Peninsula as a base for exploring other areas and famous for luring sirens to the treacherous rocks, and finally the less accessible Amalfi Coast with its gorgeous scenery one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. Reading this guide will tempt travelers to Italy to venture South of Rome.

An excellent travel planner, it can't be beat.

An excellent travel planner, it can't be beat.

The Best Guide to Paris

Review Date: 2005-01-08
Hunter Travel Guides Adventure Guide to Paris & Ile-de-France by Heather Stimmler-Hall is certainly THE guidebook we wish had been published before our last trip to Paris. This 450 page book is so well organized and indexed as to teach you everything you want to know about French history and Paris itself before you arrive. With tips of how to plan your trip within your intended budget and to meet your expectations and all you need to know about documents etc., this guide is tops. The book helps you get oriented to Paris and its environs, taking each neighborhood and section and detailing places to stay, eat, and cultural events and activities nearby. There are extensive guide sections to shopping and entertainment, culture, and getting around. Additionally there are about 100 pages devoted to side trips for special sites not to miss near Paris, such as Versailles, Fountainebleu, and others. In the final pages of the guidebook you'll learn t he necessary phrases in French to help you get through our stay without too much confusion; however, there is no guide to pronunciation of the phrases. This Adventure Guide, like others from Hunter Travel Guides, is THE ONE you'll be so glad you selected. (...)

A must-have

This travel guide walks with the adventurous traveler to the heart of Jamaica, to the miles of sand beaches, to the rugged Blue Mountains, to the country villages that provide a peek at the real Jamaica. The authors focus on the adventures this island has to offer: scuba diving along coral reefs, biking mountain trails, deep sea fishing, parasailing, windsurfing, horseback riding, and other adventures that range from mild to wild.

Special sections include a look at Jamaica's Meet the People program, home visits, local nightspots, festivals, and more.

Out of all the travel books I purchased for my Alaska trip this one proved to be the most entertaining and useful. When I recieved this book I expected just another guide book but I couldn't stop reading - the anecdotes and suggestions were as compelling as a good novel. It felt like a nice, long letter from a friend who wanted to be sure I had a great trip. While traveling I found most of their suggestions right on the money. I tried the activities they suggested and was glad I steered clear of their warnings! It turned out to be the only guide book I brought along that I actually used regularly on the trip. One draw back is that there are very few maps of the smaller local areas and the maps that are included do not give you a sense of scale. Also, the title is a bit of a misnomer, I almost did not order this book because I thought "adventure guide" meant it was only for sportspeople, kayakers and campers. But that is far from the truth, this book is great for the independant traveler who wants a leisurely trip, as well as a person who wants something a little more challenging.

Great Guide for a Much Overlooked Part of Mexico

I'm planning a trip to Veracruz soon, so I was delighted to find this book recently. All I was able to find before were general Mexico travel guides which gave scant attention to the state of Veracruz or the Gulf Coast area. This guide gives excellent, in-depth information on this much overlooked part of Mexico.

All the cities and towns I plan to visit were listed in this guide, and good information on lodging was given. The general Mexico guides seem to recommend only the most expensive places to stay, while the Gulf Coast guide also includes budget accommodations.

There was also good information on the archaeological sites to visit, where to stay and how to get there. Best of all, there was information in this book that I hadn't been able to find on the internet, which is where I had been augmenting the meager information on Veracruz that was in my other Mexico travel guides.

In addition to the well researched and well presented written material, the book contains a nice section of color photographs, many of which were taken by the author.

This is the only guidebook I've ever seen that focuses on the Gulf Coast states of Mexico. Fortunately, it's an excellent one. If the Gulf Coast of Mexico is of interest to you, you should definitely add this book to your collection.

Annabel has to be one of the finest writers I have ever read. He tells his tories like you want to read them full of action and suspense with humor and thrill thrown in for good measure. The first part of the book is how he got started in Alaska etc. The second is a story of a man and a wolf who terrorize each others lives. A MUST READ

I couldn't sleep until I had read the whole thing.

The man was the best storyteller in the land. Hetold the story in detail and color like no other writer I've ever read. I'm sure I will read this book many more times, before I'm done. Alaska has never been more awesome in any other tales of hunters and trappers. If you had a category with ten stars, I would pick ten.

Portrays Africa during its formative years

These are set in eight different African countries and grew out of the author's experiences as a State Department officer on the Congo during the 1960s. While they are more literary in content, they also portray Africa during its formative years just after its colonial regimes had dissolved, providing important keys to African history and culture.

Quick trip, take me back soon.

Each story I read in this entertaining collection takes me a little closer to Africa. I willingly surrender to the heat, the exhilaration, the frustration, the wonder, and the beauty of a continent. The images stay with me long after I've put the book down, and I find myself thinking about Africa in my daydreams instead of golf.

I also feel like I've made a dozen new friends. I have to remind myself that they are just characters. The stories are good. They are honest, and Hunter shares insights that make me feel richer for having read them. I'd like to read more.

A gentleman-hunter and naturalist records his thoughts
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-03
Frederick C. Selous was one of the giants of Vitorian Africa and in this work, written at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, he compiles many of his most keen observations about life and wildlife in Africa. Fascinating not only as a period piece, Selous's thoughts are remarkably prescient about the state of game in Africa even today. Though it was written before the rise of the commercial poaching that has ravaged so much of the continent, the book gives an excellent insight into the need to carefully observe, record, and interpret the ecological signs found in the wild. Clear and lively in style, the tales told within encompass everything from dietary habits of hyaena to the effects of sleeping sickness on agriculture. Especially interesting are the authors remarkably forward-thinking ideas on race relations, ideas that would not become the rule in southern Africa for over 75 years. An altogether satisfying read.

My comments on this Selous book.

Review Date: 1997-03-14
I have read plenty of elephant hunting volumes in the likes of Bell, Stigand and several others but this Selous book is different. It's not entirely an account of Selous' adventures with his rifle but rather as the first portion of the book's title suggests, an informative wrap-up of the ways and characteristics of various African game. Selous is a unsurpassable raconteur when it comes to telling of big game, as this book proves. There's a chapter on Selous' search for the elusive inyala antelope, and it is of great interest. A book well worth parting with your cash for. Simply a true must-buy !
