David Hunter pens a wistful memoir of his childhood in the hills of East Tennessee (with a short stint in South Carolina). As a child, Hunter was precocious and imaginative - a boy who could make arrows out of reeds and bottle tops, turn an adding machine into the control board of a space ship, and transform any number of common household items into innovative toys. Always tagging along was his little brother, Larry, reminding this reviewer of a 20th century Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. The stories told are delivered with humor and wit, in an engaging style. Hidden within the text of each chapter is a subtle moral learned by the delightfully adroit David. Hunter has grown from an imaginative boy into an imaginative man, whose creativity as a writer brings pleasure to his host of fans, of which I am one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly.

Hunter's collection of memories are perfect gems. Each is a complete story that tells us about a childhood incident. It is a warm retelling of childhood adventures and misadventures. His honesty and humor shine through the entire book making it a pleasure to read and a great break from a hectic day. It doesnt make me long for those long lost days, but Hunter's book makes me glad he lived them and is willing to share with us.

Loved it. Tells it like it is.

This is an account of the boyhood of David Hunter, a retired police officer from Tennessee. He is now a columnist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel. His book touches the heart, truly, with its frank account of his humble beginnings, which have culminated with him as published author of some six - eight books, I've lost track. His other books are about his police experiences, and will make you laugh and cry. His stories are funnier than any cop stories I've ever read, and more true to life than anything of Wambaugh's (they ARE true, every one but JigsawMan, which is a fictionalized account of a true story). Read the other books, they're even better than this one.

Easily the best source on tribal governments
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-10
This is a model of how to write about tribal politics today. It is sympathetic yet balanced, and devoid of ideological posturing. The authors are a political scientist, a historian, and a lawyer, and they bring their combined backgrounds to the study of government on Montana's seven Indian reservations.

They find success stories such as Fort Peck and Flathead, and failures of governance coexisting with potential wealth, such as the Crow. Rocky Boy's and Fort Belknap represent the all-too-common depressing story of a community trapped in a cycle of poverty. The Northern Cheyenne case is particularly interesting because they argue that politics reflects a choice between two values (economic development versus traditional values), and the tribe has legitimately decided against development.

The focus throughout the book is squarely on politics on the reservation. Outsiders-- whether natural resources corporations, the State of Montana, or the Bureau of Indian Affairs-appear in the book when they interfere in reservation affairs, but the authors emphasize the choices that Native Americans make (or fail to make) for themselves. Though they do not say so directly, the authors' guiding light is really the Federalist Papers: constitutionalism, a separation of powers, legitimacy and effective leadership are all important in governance. One might criticize this stance as a form of intellectual imperialism, though when one sees the failures of the Crow reservation in particular, it's clear that a greater concern for these institutional rules would be useful regardless of culture.

The reservations have 2000-7000 resident members each, making them the size of small towns in population terms. One might ask whether the conventional categories of municipal government (mayor and council, town administrator, etc.) would be useful models for revised tribal constitutions, making due allowance for tribal sovereignty and cultural distinctiveness.

Great book on a largely unexplored topic

In the study of contemporary Aboriginal peoples, this book is a breath of fresh air. I am a second year Native Studies and Canadian Studies double-major at Trent University in Canada. Most books dealing with tribal government and modern native people talk about Native conflicts with the European colonizers and the US government. While this is certainly a worthy topic and one that needs to be brought to attention of far more people throughout the world, this book answers a question that has been left untouched: "Do these tribal governments promote soverignty and do they respresent their people in a positive way?" I find this book, which focused specifically on the Montana Reservations, invaluable for three reasons. The first is that it makes important distinctions between the different tribes and forms of government, thus dispelling the myth that all Native tribes and people think alike and/or face the same circumstances. Second, the book talks about the phenomenon of conflict within tribes, as well as conflict between tribal governments and their members. It does not ignore the effect that outside policies and peoples have had on tribal governments, but it is not the main focus of the text. This has largely been ignored in academic scholarship, and this reveals how complex contemporary Native society is and also a good starting point for other explorations, such as Native activism that deals specifically with their tribal governments. Finally, the book is humble in its demeanor, which is unfortunately, becoming more uncommon in academic scholarship today(i.e. Ward Churchill). The authors are non-Native, and admit that they are NOT trying to provide a definitive answer or conclusion for tribes, but are simply trying to provoke further examination and discussion on the topic. They never claim to hold an academic or intellectual monopoly or superiority over others. Overall, this book a refreshing view of Native peoples, their contemporary governments, and the issues that plague Indian Country. It is also interesting for myself in seeing what the future might hold for Canadian Native tribes, who are still struggling to obtain soverignty and self-government.

A much-needed addition.

Martha Grace Reese has spent years studying that dynamics of church evangelism and offers her wisdom in this three book series. But for Reese this is a personal passion - she believes in the life-changing gift of the church and is empowering us, through these books, to make a difference. Reese has "unbound her heart" in this book so that we can see a glimpse of the possibilities before us as local church pastors and leaders. This is a must read for every pastor and leader of a mainline church.

Mainline churches have not won any evangelism series for a long time. Just as the Boston Red Sox broke the curse of the Bambino, the Real Life Evangelism Series knocks one out of the park. Reese equips mainline church leaders with prayerful and practical tools needed to change the church through the power of Christ's redeeming love.

This approach is, of course, based on "Unbinding the Gospel" and works best with a leadership-based understanding of those principles. And you really want to read that, anyhow.

But if you've felt like you've tried "40 Days of . . .whatever" and it just didn't fly, try this -- really. Especially for mainline/oldline congregations who find some of the language or approaches in Saddleback or other denominational programs too, um, "too," this approach is basic, straightforward, but utterly non-condescending. Members and visitors at churches looking for an approach to spiritual growth and congregational vitality will find these books an answered prayer -- which is, in fact, the whole point of what Gay Reese is writing and speaking about.

God answers prayer.

But you have to ask, and -- big step, this -- you have to listen.

And then you have to do something about what you hear . . . which is where the real adventure begins. These books give you a clear run at making the "leap of faith" to do all of that and more.

In Maryland, Jack White informs CIA undercover operative Daniel MacAlister that he might have to eliminate former superheroine Risa Remington. Daniel makes it clear to his superior he detest the assignment, but Jack who loathes it too tells him she could prove a major security risk. Last year Daniel and Risa infiltrated a terrorist lab in Nevada, but an electromagnetic blast caused her to lose what made her valuable to the agency; her ability to read minds. Jack directs Daniel to try helping her adjust to the normal world, but if he fails he is to kill her.

Daniel visits Risa pretending to see how she is doing. They quickly fall into bed as he cannot resist her sexual lure. As they make love, however, his sexual strokes apparently activates her superpowers, which means she will be able to read his secret agenda if he continues to touch her, something he craves doing.

This is a terrific romantic suspense thriller with a touch of the paranormal and starring a delightful lead pair. The story line is fast-paced as the protagonists fall in love, but his assignment must come before his feelings and desires. The twist of the sexual trigger is devious, brilliant and fun as Samantha Hunter entertains readers with a wonderful tale.

Daniel MacAlister (hero) is told by his CIA boss that he have to go check on Risa Remington (heroine), a former CIA undercover operative. Daniel knows what comes with this request. He might have to eliminate Risa if she is now a risk to the CIA. Risa Remington all her life was trained by the CIA and knows nothing else. At one time Risa could read minds and had teamed up with Daniel. Her mind-reading talent was once very valuable to the CIA, but while out on assignment, an explosion caused her to lose her ability. She now finds herself obsolete to the CIA and must live as a regular person, in a world that she knows little about. The CIA fears she may become unstable and threaten their organization with what she knows. They send Daniel MacAlister to check out her situation.

The story is different because it gives the heroine telepathic abilities and with some undercover mystery thrown into the storyline. Daniel MacAlister when he meets up with Risa Remington again, immediately feels the attraction and wants to explore more. Their love scenes were fiery and they quickly become addictive to one another. Although I enjoyed the story there were points that made me felt sorry for Risa and how she was used by the CIA. I believe this is the type of romance novel that will be enjoyed by readers of both genders. The writer Samantha Hunter gives us a romance inside of a mystery wrapped up into a thriller.

The Vampire Hunters

Review Date: 2002-03-15
Scooter Keyshawn looks forward to becoming one of the Graveyard Armadillos, which include Russell Knight and his sister, Racquel, Kristie Chandel, Jo Gunn, twins BJ and CJ Mochrie, and Garrett. His initiation was both heart pounding and preposterous at the same time. All he had to do was take a picture, a picture of Marcus Chandler, a retired filmmaker with a rare skin disease that left him with white - really white - and sensitive to sunlight, whom Garrett believed was a vampire. He took the picture, unfortunately, but of course there were consequences for doing such a foolish deed. Scooter apologized, forced to by Judge Grandfather Keyshawn, and he actually came to be fond of the man. As soon as people started to disappear, things became uneasy for Scooter. And, when they found Tony and Teri, the Newbaker twins, dead, everything just fell apart. He knew all accusations pointed to Chandler, but he wasn't a vampire and he didn't kill them, or so he thought.
The Graveyard Armadillos was just a local gang that no one wanted to be apart of, no one except Scooter Keyshawn. Scooter was an outcast in school, and no one really knew him well except his best friends, Flash and Russell. Flash, his Labrador, is the perfect dog for him; he's smart, loyal, and obeying. Russell, his human friend, is pretty much just like him; they like each other for who they are, and not who they want to be. Scooter, however, wants to be the one in Kristie Chandel's, the minister's daughter's, eyes. He's got a major crush on her and he hasn't made his move yet. Once they started "hanging out," they came to grow fond each other, and he even received his first kiss from her.
Although I'm not into the whole "love scene" that much, my favorite part in this fantastic book is when Scooter and Kristie kiss. Scooter had killed - staked through the heart - the vampire, Mr. Shade. He was responsible for the deaths and disappearances of the teenagers of the town. Scooter found Kristie afterwards and kissed her. The kiss was short, yet sweet, and in my opinion, nothing else could have reached the height their kiss did. It was the perfect moment for it; they both liked each other and were in great danger just minutes before. The best part: she beamed brightly and said, "I think everything is going to be all right now." Obviously the kiss wasn't just a kiss, it was a spark of true love.

For the adult or young adult Vampire Hunters is a hit.

Growing up in a family that ate wild game and who knows that there is a good and a bad way to cook wild game this is a book that the novice and the old timer will love. Mainly because the recipes are wonderful and many are new as far as modern ingredients i.e. fruits and vegetables that go with wild game and for the novice it is wise to have a book that not only teaches the proper ways to dress a kill and handle and store it, but how not to cook it.

I cannot tell you how often I have seen a beautiful piece if venison just taste awful or so tough you need a chain saw to cut it. This book will make that hard earned piece of meat melt in your mouth. Of course I love and own most of the books The Hunting & Fishing Library has produced.

Need a great gift for the deer hunter (male OR female) in your life? This is it.

Virginia, Where Dreams Gave Birth To A Nation

Review Date: 2002-02-08
As a native Virginian, I don't know why it took me so long to discover this book. It's a great reference to have for both residents and visitors. I spent the first two hours just looking up points of interest and trivia about the Old Dominion. Virginia has so many historical sites that touring the state is like taking a class on the formation of America. A tourist can visit Revolutionary War Sites, Civil War Battlefields, scenic old towns, and the beautifully restored great houses, like Mount Vernon in Alexandria , Monticello in Charlottesville, Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg and, of course, the James River Plantations. Williamsburg is a must see for everyone.

This book's Introduction gives a little background of Virginia and some general history. The handbook is then divided into the five regional areas of the state. They are the Northern, Central, Coastal Plain, Southwest and the Shenandoah Valley. Within these divisions information is given on the counties and major cities. In each place, the historic sites, annual events, shopping places, museums, hotel accommodations, recreation areas, dining and local transportation are all listed and given detailed descriptions.

I think that the best way to truly critique a guide book is to read about an area that you know pretty well and see how the authors handled that region. All of the major sites were mentioned in my area and the accommodations and things to do were all covered. I checked out the restaurants listed and there were eight mentioned. I would have left out two. One major restaurant was not included. Other than that minor point, the authors gave a pretty accurate description of my area. This book is very concise and I believe it to be a very helpful guide to traveling in the great state of Virginia..

This guidebook does a good job of presenting its information in a concise, meaningful way. You can easily flip through its well-marked sections and feel as if you are taking a trip all over Virginia! I like that each section (History, Shopping) starts with a quick intro, telling you the overall feel of that area. It's not afraid to tell you that one city is more known for its nightlife while another is known for its shopping malls. The beginning of the book includes an overall look at Virginian history, major cities, climate, major roadways and wildlife - great information for newcomers to have!

I still remember certain things about it--the father whose hair never grew back after the war, the brother who fell off the roof competing for his "sister", the astonishing letters home from Badger who fled the Viet Nam War. But at the same time these turns help clarify the emotions.Every character was defined and understood without a lot of rhetoric. Teaching the Child with ASD Self-Management Skills
Helpful Votes: 33 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-24
I'm all about providing support and tools for children to understand themselves. Our kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other neurological issues often have difficulty not only perceiving the emotions in others, but in themselves. Flooded with feelings of anger or frustration it's difficult at that moment to make good choices in regards to behavior. As I have three children with Asperger Syndrome myself, I have often faced the issue of explaining to them that they can make positive choices when overwhelmed with feelings. (To quote my son, "Nuh uh!") It is not the time to reason with a child when he is in the middle of a meltdown, which is why it is so important to empower him with ideas and skills over a period of time, and to have a plan as to how to implement a plan BEFORE she or he is melting down. That is where this very simply written book comes in. Having this basic plan for making positive choices when upset, can prevent meltdowns.

The Way to A provides children with a concrete tool for understanding how they feel and behave during certain emotions, and then with an adult helping the child problem solve, they can decide on different options for what may calm or soothe themselves. This book is ingenious in that it is covered with wipeable pages you can use a dry eraser marker on to use over and over. Ideally each child would have his own book, but because it is reuseable, it can be used for every child in a pre-school, daycare, or elementary school.

Parents would be well served to work through this little colorful book with their child in order to not only provide their child with the tools to learn self-management, but to problem solve themselves and to gain a greater understanding of what sets their child off, and what calms him. While most parents of children such as ours already know these things (parents are the experts on their child), to see it written down makes it more concrete and reminds us that we DO have strategies. This is empowering for both child AND parent.

I think this is a lovely book, and also quite cute. I can't wrestle it away from my 6 year old at the moment, but it would also be helpful for my 11 year old, and the strategies themselves, are excellent for my 14 year old. The saying goes, "First, know thyself." This is a step in the right direction for creating a lifetime of self-management.

I purchased this book for my sister whose daughter is very high functioning austic. We were at our wits end in dealing with her tantrums and insistence on having things her way. She caught onto this method very quickly and it has helped us in managing her tantrums. While we don't always succeed, sometimes she comes right out and says "I AM NOT CHOOSING A!!", most of the time she really wants to "do the right thing" and does select A.
