I was pretty familiar with the history of this subject, but was more interested in the archeological finds. For instance, in the world of shooting today the 50-70 is all but forgotten yet there were more 50-70 cases and cartridges found than any other caliber. The thing about some of the long shots the hunters made during the siege is that the authors point out that the hunters had no doubt tested their prowess at different targets at different distances, so had probably already "marked" many of the shots and distances. Good reference for anyone studying the battle, I am going to the site this summer, and read this as a preface...Ivery

Best book on the Adobe Walls battle available. Covers every aspect from the structures, to the archaeology, people (both anglos and native american), the battle, the occupations, etc. Great info on the archaeology, including ammunition, guns, dinnerware (plates etc), blacksmithing, etc. I learned much about the battle, the times, the people, the construction of the trading post, who, why, when, how.
Highest recommendation!

This is one of the best books on Adobe Walls, ( the other being the life of Billy Dixon). It takes you all the way through, from start to finish. The last half of the book is about the archeology that was done in the 70's. It gives a real insite into the hide hunters and store keepers lives during the six month's at the Walls.

Pretty good guide book

My wife and I took this book with us on a recent "Yankee Clipper" cruise from Windjammer. The book was quite useful with good descriptions (usually a paragraph or two) of the accomodations and restaurants on the islands we visited (Grenada, Mayreau, Bequia, Carricou, Tobago Cays). The authors were very up front about the experiences they DIDN'T like which helped us to avoid frustration. The book also had a nicely organized table of contents which helped navigate the book quickly.

Three small strikes against the book... First is the prices given were in ranges. Thus a hotel has its rating of 1 to 4 dollar signs. However, you don't know if the hotel you're staying at with the $$ sign is on the low end ($110-$115) or on the high end ($190-$195). Some people may not mind this, but I found Lonely Planet's "Eastern Caribbean" to be a bit more specific on what kinds of prices you can expect.

Second, most of the maps were for the whole island, with the only city specific maps being Kingstown, SVG and St. George's Grenada. The Lonely Planet book had several "city-scale" maps which proved to be helpful.

Finally, the book is rather large physically, about one inch thick and almost 6" by 9". This made it somewhat of a hinderence to carry around; we just left it in our cabin and read it on the way to our next island.

However, don't let my negative comments discourage you. This is an excellent guidebook for the area and is highly recommended.

This guide is immediate and thorough; it give a host of places and activities that could fulfill even the most bored tourist's desires. The book is salted with the kind of personal experience that makes visiting these islands so special. They take us away from palm beaches, island vistas and rugged emerald mountains and put us in touch with the people who inhabit these beautiful places. From fishermen in Barrouallie to Rastas in the Port Elizabeth market and a botanist in St. George's, we get a sense of the lives that entwine to make up the fabric of these islands. Also, each section begins with a history of the place at hand, so important to understanding the southern Windwards. The authors have produced a journeyman labor, a product of discernment and enterprise tempered with warmth and humor. Those of us who have seen the southern Windwards as a special place for so long have reason to be thankful and relieved.

If you think you'll ever want to plan a trip either by car or motorcycle to the great state of Alaska, this book is a must-have. Not only does provide everything you could ever ask for, it comes in a small package that packs away nicely.

I recently rode my motorcycle up the Alaska Highway and space was pretty limited. I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact.

It stayed in my tankbag every day, was brought out at every meal, and was pored over in hotel rooms at night. I'm also a writer, and my Adventure Guide to the Alaska Highway became my de facto notebook on the trip -- post-it notes of every color peek out from its pages; notes line the margins.

There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back.

Also, the book is laid out very well. The font is easy on the eyes; bold section headers made it easy to find what I was looking for, even while balancing the book on my tankbag after pulling to the side of some gravelly road in the middle of nowhere.

A Great Guide to The Alcan and Beyond.

While the Milepost will give you every pullout and scenic view on the highway, this book is great reading about what to do, and what to see on your way. The information is very accurate and intresting. In this book, when you look up a certain place you end up reading on and on.

I took this book with the AAA guidebook on my trip to Alaska, read the AAA intro on the plane there and read only this book for the rest of the trip. We traveled more than 2,000 miles on the Alaska Highway. This book has been a great companion and guide book wherever we go. I even did some more reading on the plane back home because the writing was interesting. It may be partly because Alaska is such an interesting subject; but the book is definitely fun to read.

I just returned from a trip to St. Kitts and Nevis and found this book very useful, from the time I was selecting a hotel until I was on the island and looking for a place to eat. Through this guide, I learned about many out of the way spots that were overlooked by other guides. I am looking forward to using other sections of the book on a trip next year to St. Martin and Anguilla.

Montana offers a wealth of outdoor fun for the active traveler, from skiing and snowmobiling to fly fishing and horseback riding. With stunning scenery and colorful history, the state is one of the most appealing in the US. And the best part: it's rarely crowded!

Join Rowles as she explores big cities and small towns alike, as well as the small wilderness areas and sprawling preserves. Guest ranches are the preferred accommodation here, but the author gives you plenty of other options. And if you're not ready for a ride in the saddle, perhaps some classes are in order - you'll find all the details you need in this hefty, information-packed guidebook.

James Mellon has excellent photography of every animal discussed, and he usually describes what constituted a "book class" or trophy animal during the time he hunted. This book was recommended to me by the 1993 Safari Club International Professional Hunter of the Year as possibly the best photo record of trophy african animals. There are also interesting historical notes, and the book is a good, factual read, not a "Capstick Thriller".

My partner has both Fibromyalgia and CFS and this booklet with its fully explained contents on Alternative Treatments has given us a most informative insight into these. In the area we live one of the biggest problems is finding a Doctor thats fully understands and can treat accordingly by using conventional and alternative means. We also do not have a support group in the area and we both have learnt so much in this wonderful book.We can now from the book understand a lot of what has happened almost on a daily basis for my partner as sections in this book are spot on with regular body signs and symptoms.

A "good" Angel book (not all are) -and here is why...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-01
Charles and Frances Hunter are the authors of "Angels on Assignment," for its first publication. (Although this book is properly by Rev. Roland H. Buck, of the famous Buck Knife family, it was as told to Mr. And Mrs. Hunter, who published the book before Whitaker House got copyrights and published it later on.)

I mention this because their affiliation with Rev. Buck lends credibility to their claims: Rev. Buck made a couple of predictions (see my other book review of his book for details) which, incredibly, came true! Therefore, I count him as a 'true' prophet. He also passes all 5 classic tests for a prophet. (See my book review of Michaelson's book for those five tests.)

You have the standard fare, tales of angel encounters, but, like Roland Buck's book, which they wrote from their interviews of him, the Hunters' book here also does not ever contradict scripture. I would know, as I have read all of the Bible from cover to cover. To put things in perspective, two of the books I've reviewed on Amazon here do not completely line up with the Bible, and you will have to read my reviews to see which two -for details.

In addition, however, the Hunters have included some accounts from other people as well. Furthermore, the Hunters are accomplished authors -and still going even though they are well advanced in years. In conclusion, I rate their book with the highest rating, not something I do for all books I rate. Yes, this book is one that is hard to put down, and rightly so.

There are many books on the subjet of angels today but this one is special. The description of the different kinds of angels and the explanation of their mission are not at all boring and long. Frances and Charles Hunter use many verses of the Bible to underline what they say. Their style is light, easy to read and funny ( an ingredient I like to find in books!). The stories relating manifestations of angels in our world are true stories happened mostly in their ministry. Each one is different and show a new facet of the angel ministry. The book finishes with the story of a woman who experienced manifestations of angels while a baby!

I gave my son "Bear Cookin': The Original Guide to Bear Comfort Foods" and "More Bear Cookin': Bigger and Better" for Christmas. He's moving out this spring for college and I was looking for a couple of cookbooks to kick-start his collection. He knows his way around the kitchen, but his experience is from cooking by my side without written down recipes. I wanted simple homestyle recipes, with no-nonsense ingredients and instructions. He's a big boy, more of a cub than a bear, with a big appetite and I wanted something he would actually use.

These cookbooks deliver exactly what I wanted and more. The recipes were collected from family and friends, delicious and traditional and hearty, with easy to find ingredients and easy to follow instructions. Each recipe is lovingly introduced - the book sprinkled with helpful tips, serving hints, food tributes and the author's down to earth humor and charm. The cookbooks aren't fancy and filled with pretty pictures, but what you do get is something that can actually be used and enjoyed. I would heartily recommend these cookbooks for any cook that appreciates inventive, homestyle cookin'. I've ordered copies for myself.

My son and I have already sampled a few of the recipes. The "Fruity Barbecue Wings" was a delicious twist on an old favorite, tangy and sweet. The "Blueberry Orange Muffins" was a simple and tasty variation on the same ol', same ol' muffins I usually make. And the "Beef Stroganoff" that uses a spice that I would have never considered before - that added an interesting flavor to another family favorite. I'm one of those potato salad snobs that will only make mine one way and one way only. This cookbook includes three different variations on the traditional potato salad - which I will definitely be trying out. And I can tell you right now the "Beyond the Honeypot" chapter is going to be a favorite with its "Mom's Oatmeal Pie," "Banana Split Cake" and "Easy Peach Blueberry Cobbler."

Can you tell I wrote this review while I was hungry? *grins*
