After listening to the 13 disk audio with narration by Christopher Kay I find that awarding only a five star rating is an injustice to both author and reader. Since the writer of the diary and the author of the book are not of the Jewish faith, it lends much credence to the events that took place. Readers with high blood pressure and a weak stomach must exercise caution when getting involved in the atrocities that took place during the Nazi regime in Germany. There is much blame to go around, but the failure to prosecute these sadists who escaped the hangman's noose and fled to a life of luxury is extremely galling. This book is definitely a page turner and very dificult to put down as the process for hunting down some of these killers gets underway. This is the first review I have ever written, but it took something this powerful and moving for me to turn on the computer and write the above. In conclusion, this is a must read!

this book is about a canadian jews who had migrated to canada with his aunt ruth after the horror of WW2. He had not known about hitler and the SS until his aunt told him everything. Its a very sad and doleful book about the brutality of hitler and the life in the concentration camp. a person reading this book must have a gut to read it because of all the sorrows and misery of the jews written in the book. i studied world history and learned about hitler. i didnt really think he was that bad because all my book represented was facts and figures. not until i read this book did i find out the horrible time of the WW2. i couldnt even believe and swallow the way the jews had been killed. for all those SS who escaped death must be captured and hunted down. they are not condoned to live in this world for what they did and how other people suffered because of them. what derek jacobs did was praiseworthy. no matter how old they are not they deserve to die.
if u truly wanna learn the horror of WW2 read this book

As a history major with a particular interest in WWII, I found this book both riveting and horrifying.

History books tell you that Hitler systematically murdered 6 million Jews. But they don't give you the details. In "The Secret Hunters" Fiennes pulls no punches, and gives a gruesome account complete with details of how the Jews were abused by the SS in WWII.

The only reason I gave this book only four stars instead of five is that the blurb gave me the impression that I was picking up an adventure tale of a treasure-hunting journey in Antarctica. While that is the direction the last quarter of the book took, it wasn't the main focus of the narrative. There was much more about the Holocaust and its atrocities itself.

A thought provoking piece of work with an inconclusive ending that makes me wonder what happened to Derek Jacob.

Fantastic Read - a must

Fascinating read i could not put it down. The gist of the story is that a Canadian Catholic named Derek Jacobs learns from his aunt that they have jewish ancestors and as a consequence the brutal inhumane sadistic tortures inflicted on jews during ww2.
His aunt tells him of a man called Karl Bendl alias Seidler raped Dereks mother and abused her during the nazi regime in ww2. Derek then in confronted by a man who tells him about an underworld organisation called the Secret Hunters who track down Nazis that have commited war crimes and to bring them to trial.
Fuelled by hate tracking down Bendl becomes an obsession and leads Derek onto a boat to Antartica by nazis who think they have found gold thus kickstarting neo nazism and a re-rise to power.
This book is gripping to the end and is not for the faint hearted as it goes into detail of what happened to the jews which some people may find unsettling. All in all i truly give it the thumbs up.

This book exemplifies just how God will manifest and be glorified in your life if you allow him to use you as his vessel. It was truly written under the anointing and it shows that the writer really put his heart into it by giving every detail in his testimony. I would recommend this book to anyone whether you have been saved all your life or a "baby" in Christ this book will really stir up some good things in the supernatural and in the flesh.

As with the morality plays of yore this novel challenges us to confront forces of good and evil, of light and darkness, of calm and chaos. With startling insight, captivating wit and enduring compassion the author populates her tale with a range of characters - all so recognizable in our own lives - from those born on the wrong side of the tracks to the silver-spoon-in-the-mouth anointed. We meet both the self-righteously pious and the devoutly ecumenical ... and not to be missed is the lightly-concealed commentary on arguably the most egregious political machinations of our time.

The questions Ms. Bernard poses to her readers require lifelong contemplation: Where would each of us find ourselves standing in line? Who would seek us out? What choice would be put to us? Is redemption available even to those who have sinned the most? Whether God-fearing or otherwise, the reader will find this novel resonates with both his highest ideals and his worst nightmares.

If you are accept the possibility that "heaven" and "hell" may exist in different forms, depending on who you are and how you lived your life, then you will really enjoy this book. There are some very dark, some violent parts, but there are some hilarious parts, too. The way the author describes all the different saints and angels, and the devil, is really amazing. She makes them so believable, it's hard not to think that if they really do exist, this is exactly the way they are!

Wow, this is really thought-provoking. Everyone worries (at some point) about what is going to happen after death -- even if they have been very religious/observant, there is a point that we just wonder what really will happen. This book makes so much sense, it is hard to refute the ideas. And it is remarkable how Bernard can write such painful stories and also inject humor at just the right time. A great story.

A fabulous tale about getting just what you deserve!

This is a story not bound by any religious belief or disbelief. The tale crosses time and space to reveal the universal theme of simply getting what's coming to you! What happens to the spirit of those we've loved and lost? What happens to the spirits and souls of those who have committed the ultimate unspeakable acts of violence and ugliness? Is there any connection between the things we say and do while we're alive, and what happens to us after we die? If you've ever wondered these things yourself and are interested in a light and non-preaching/non-religious fictional answer, than this book is for you! What a fresh spin by a talented storyteller on a topic as old as time!

I picked up this third and final installment of the X-Battalion series and couldn't put it down. Jack Shane's writing always moves along at a quick pace, but he's set this one at warp factor 5. The action is non-stop and the plot twists come fast and furious. Basically the story of what a special forces commander does on his last day of duty -- i.e. saving LA from being destroyed -- the book is also surprisingly poignant, especially in the last few pages. Shane's underlying theme is that despite the bravery and skills of the US military, the politicians and big business have screwed us all, and because of this, the American Empire is finished. No argument there.

I ran across the first of this series,X-BATTALION, and bought it because of the title. After reading it I found that I liked it, so I went on to the second one, OPERATION SOUTHWRN CROSS, and went directly to the FINAL one, ANARCHY'S REIGN. I will get back to that word FINAL in a moment.
These book are action filled like many other techno war books. However what separates this series is the character developement. Autry,Mungo, and McCune are fully define
men, men with definite character flaws. These flaws plus the idea of bucking the system are the things that make this series interesting. ANARCHY'S REIGN takes place in L.A. It is fun that the action takes place on American soil. The only hope to save L.A. are the SKY HUNTERs, but they are disbanded it because they are too good and the other services hate them. They are a loose cannon that can't be trusted. Needless
to
say like in the other two novels they win because they are un predictable.

Now that word FINAL!!! After reading this book, I screamed and threw the book across the room. For you see the author ends this series with this book. All those great characters will not return. The funny part of all this is that I went to the author's web page and wrote him a letter telling him how I felt. He answered my email!! Yes hesaid this was the end, but that I ahould try out his other works by his other name Jack Moloney of the WINGMAN series, STARHAWKE series, and the CHOPPER OPS series. I have read these and they are almost good enough to make me forgive him for killing this series. ALMOST but no!

I started this book and the next thing I know I am 126 pages in it. The story line came together really fast and kept you moving thru the book like a rocket ship. Some of the plot goes about a possible attack on the U. S. Homeland during a time when many of the World leaders are together.
Then all chaos breaks out. Of course the good guys save the day. But there is one line in the book that really sticks out to me that makes me think about the real world and the fights we are having. Maybe this last Election will start the end of our country? Think about it, one side wants to give in and the other side wants to win the war on terror. The glue that holds our country together is loosing. Hopefully people will realize that the enemy wants to kill us all. It maybe only a book but it does compare to the real world at times. I personally like to win the war on terror compared to losing. Jack keep on writing

FINDING THE PLATINA STONES

The Sorcerer Hunters had quite the Darth Vader moment facing off against the Sorcerer Hunter Killers last volume. Tira and Chocolat learned that the leader of the Killers was none other than their adopted father Sacher Torte, who had rebelled against Big Mama 13 years ago. Also among Sacher's cronies is Gateau's sister, who he had thought long dead, and apparently has no memory of her brother. She seems more than willing to kill him without a second thought. Years ago, Sacher even tried to kill Tira and Chocolat in a fit of psychotic rage, so Chocolat in particular wants to take revenge on him. He was wounded by Carrot's father in volume 4 but continues to be a threat as long as he can draw on the power of his Platina stones, which allow him to wield a pure form of magic which was reserved only for gods. The Sorcerer Hunters must find these five stones and destroy them if they hope to defeat Sacher. But their mission is not going to be easy because Sacher has posted powerful guardians to watch over each stone. Each battle is different because each guardian is unique and has their own methods of trying to defeat the Hunters, whether they be physical or more psychological.

Even though the art has a definite 1990's look to it, Omishi's skills are on proud display as she is a master of action, comedy, and even illustrating a heartfelt flashback at how Carrot and Chocolat met when they were kids. To me, this was the best part of Volume 5. Yeah, we know that Chocolat has a thing for Carrot, but here we find out why. It is a welcome event to reveal that Carrot is not quite the mindless horndog and that Chocolat is not quite the mindless dingbat that she puts on. That there is a loving bond between the two, even though the love each feels might be different. Even at that early of an age Chocolat wanted to find and kill Sacher but Carrot put some sense into her head, knowing that she would only wind up dead if she confronted him. Even NOW, she would probably end up dead! But now she has friends that care about her and will help her out. Akahori almost always finds a way to get some comedy into each story even if there is a particularly serious arc, but it never seems forced or out of place. This series probably should have been rated Mature since it does feature a couple of full-on [...] shots along the level of Ai Yori Aoshi.

This is the sweetest!!!

I just love Sorcerer Hunters. I have never seen the Animè version, but I hope it's as great as the manga novel. It's extremely funny, but can also be very serious. It does contain some nudity, so it isn't for little kiddies. There are also a few things that were left untold in the books, that made me a little confused, but they don't pertain to anything that would make a big difference. I really love this series :)

The Sorcerer Hunters Series, which totals 13 books in all, is a very well-written fantasy/humor/adventure. It isn't your average Japanese Manga... I learned that after reading the first volume.
I highly recommend this book, but only if you have read at least one of the other books before this. Up to book 4, it was short stories (at most 3 chapters long), and mainly for character development. The 4th book introduces a major story line as well, so it gives you more to think about.

------------------------
The story continues with the Sorcerer Hunters' hunt for the Platina Stones. The main story takes us from a mysterious mansion surronded by Zechlova(sp?) trees, to a little shack in the snow. Here, we learn more about Tira and Chocloat's past, and get our first glimpses of Apricot Glase (Carrot and Marron's mother). Her personality adds a nice touch to the mood, because we begin to see why the main characters act the way they do.

This book is wonderful, and very serious on occasions. Don't worry, though. There are two stories strictly for humor between the two serious ones. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I do.

Yes, the Spirit of KA is indeed a trend-setter - it revolutionizes the fraternal history genre, heretofore dominated by obscure esoterica, by enabling a shift to a more robust paradigm, marked by terse yet erudite explateration.

Also, having had the misfortune to happen upon the character known as "Steve Davis", I would urge all to take his ramblings with a grain of salt. I, for one, highly doubt that he has even cracked open The Spirit of KA, let alone put forth the multitude of hours required to savor its magnificence.

A well-written history of the Kappa Alpha Literary Society. Mr. Torelton is a great man, loved by KA. I have read this book 60 or 70....thousand times, and love all the history and tradition behind the society which was founded in 1825. Torelton does a wonderful job showing the evolution of the society over the past 160 years.

The Kappa Alpha Society is approaching its 175th birthday as the oldest Greek letter social fraternity. The Spirit of KA is a great tribute to the great men (and women of late) who have kept a proud tradition alive despite some recent challenges and competition for time and dollars from our members. The book took forever for completion (almost 10 years) but the result and the many fascinating stories, facts, pictures and songs were well worth the wait. The Society is indebted the "Bull" Tarleton who probably knows more about the Kappa Alpha Society than anyone in our proud history spanning 3 different centuries. Fraternity fans may want to visit the KA 175th anniversary celebration at Union College on September 22 and 23. This is where the whole tradition started in 1825.

This is a delightfully informative naration clearly describing not only every day life in the UK during the war years but also the appalling loss of life in the air.
It is hard to imagine the fear and extreme adrenaline rushes these pilots were exposed to and then to return to base at the end of the day and try to resume some normality in life....what an extreme contrast and emotional roller coaster.
This is a recommended read to all with an interest in aviation.

The English have had a history riddled with war and bloodshed. In a war to end oppression and evil, one British pilot, David Crook recorded his memoirs of day to day life and illustrated the hardships of life during an era of uncertainty in a journal now published as Spitfire Pilot during World War II. This recollection of memories was some of the harshest battles the modern world has ever witnessed. From the famous Battle of Britain to the numerous long painstaking escort bomber missions over Germany, this pilot and others alike were the last obstacle Hitler had to overcome before a German invasion of England. Crook understands this and quickly learns that everyday might be his last. Overall this one mans experiences in the darkest times of humanity are both breathtaking and horrifying for any military buff.

I purchased this book for research. I thought it a just a book to pick up on a few pointers for my writing project. I was instantly captivated by the author and his uncanny ability to put the reader in the cockpit. I promise you that this is an unusual story. It is about a great pilot, airplane, the men who flew them, the time that they lived in, and most of all a small band of deticated, beyond words, young men fighting a formidable enemy against unbelievable odds.
The author coveys well what it is to lose a loved freind and brother in arms. To have breakfast with him, and then know he's gone by 10:00 A.M. that morning... and more.
D.M.C.(the author) is speaking through a very personal pilots log, a diary. His writings will be read by my children as they will be home schooled. He and his fellow pilots are heros of freedome, Liberty.
This book will be on my shelf for a very long time. I kid you not, is worth a lot more than it's cover price.

"Spitfire Pilot" remains the best British Air Force memoirs of World War II.

Flight Lieutenant David Crook tells the story of the British Auxiliary Air Force's 609 Squadron, which shot down 100 German aircraft during the Battle of Britain, killing some 800 Luftwaffe pilots and crewmen while losing only 13. It was units like these, from the Royal and Auxiliary Air Forces, manned with young pilots like David Crook that won the Battle of Britain, devastating the Luftwaffe.

Crook's first hand accounts of the lives and deaths of British fighter pilots in World War II are both insightful and powerful. The author, who won Britain's Distinguished Flying Cross, survived the Battle of Britain only to die in a training accident in December 1944.

Who better is there than Paul McIlhenny to write a Tabasco Sauce cookbook? The recipes in this book are simple to prepare and tasty. I just made one of the omelette recipes featured in this book. It consisted of four ingredients, one of which (beer) I never imagined I'd put in an omelette. It was great and took five minutes to pull together. Some other recipes worth trying are "Zydeco Green Beans", "Potato, Artichoke & Leek Soup" and "Walter McIlhenny's Chili".

McIlhenny includes alot of interesting Tabasco-usage tips. For example, he recommends adding a drop to a glass of cola. After my beer-in-the-omelette episode, I'm willing to try Tabasco in my Coke. He includes alot of Tabasco history and Tabasco trivia which I could have done without. But, overall, this is a pretty good cookbook. I just wish the space taken up by history and trivia had been used for more recipes.

One of the best "niche" cookbooks around.

This cookbook utilizes Tabasco sauce in all the recipes, but they are not all firey hot. Rather, this cookbook uses Tabasco like a spice or flavoring agent, to add dimension to all kind of recipes.

I highly recommend this to anybody that likes good food and likes their food to have flavor instead of just heat.

This is sort of a "guys'" cookbook so far as who will most savor these spicy-hot dishes. But if you're a guy and your spouse/companion does all the cooking (which is still by far the predominant actuality in America, even though this trend is shifting somewhat) then you need to be aware that most of the recipes herein require some level of culinary experience.

Now, the fact is that many women will love these dishes too, and, many men are quite capable of preparing these recipes -- but I did want to particularly mention this culinary skill level issue. These recipes are not especially difficult as recipes go but this is really not a cookbook for those who have yet to develop their basic cooking skills.

As to the book's content, these are some wonderful recipes. Each is rated as to the intensity of heat, represented by tiny Tabasco bottles... one bottle means mild, two means it's hotter, and so on, up to a rating of four (Diablo!). This work is more-or-less an official Tabasco publication since Paul McIlhenny is one of the co-authors -- Barbara Hunter is a public relations person who likely organized McIlhenny's thoughts and recipes into a very comprehensible format.

The book also contains a history, mostly of Tabasco [brand] Hot Pepper Sauce and is nicely illustrated with black-and-white photos from the company archives. The dishes themselves are not illustrated but I did not find that this diminished the book in any significant major way.

Here is the table of contents:

I own the hardcover 1993 edition of this cookbook. It's 144 pages in length and the book's dimensions are 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1/2" and the two-page index is nicely organized. Typical of the recipes you'll find are "Eggplant New Iberia" (page 19), "Classic Bloody Mary" (page 51), and "Mustard Crusted Leg of lamb" (page 100). In fact a good many of the featured recipes are either Creole or Cajun in their ethnicity.

While not a "general cookbook" by any stretch of the imagination, "The Tabasco Cookbook" is still a great specialty volume which will appeal heavily to those who enjoy cooking and/or eating spicy dishes. Highly recommended.

I found this book very interesting. As a small boy in the late '70's I met and befriended Mrs. Jennings who as a person, and with stories of her and her husbands adventures, had a great impact on my childhood on Roatan. I personally have a strong connection to the stories. However, I am sure I would find it interesting if I did not. Mr. Moore is lucky to have been able to participate in these adventures.

A Real-Life Indiana Jones.......

If Howard Jennings wasn't George Lucas's inspiration for the Indiana Jones movies, he very well could've been. This book documented by one of his treasure hunting cronies gives novelistic descriptions of everything from found pirate hoards to emerald gems discovered in South America by Jennings. Seems both the author and this modern-day swashbuckler were also first-rate ladies men throughout their years of treasure hunting adventures together which adds even more spice to the true tales. Danger, intrigue and adventure are the key elements of this book whether you're a treasure hunting couch potato or a serious treasure hunter yourself. Practical advice abounds and the book even closes with some known and not so well known sites for aspirants to follow the leads of. While this book is out of print, the good news is that several cheap copies are available online at places like abebooks.com. Discover for yourself why this book is a treasure all on its own!

Few anglers have had as impressive an impact on a single river as Harrop. Hidden beneath the tales lie an undeniable love of the Henry's Fork, its history, and its inhabitants. This book is sure to become a classic. A great read with much to teach.

Its nice to see Rene's excellent articles from the fly fishing jls in the US and Japan appear in hardcover. The collection is definately worth having for the angler/book collector. I am enjoying reading these artcles though the fly designs and patterns are no surpises - standard Harrop stuff. Well written and interesting, a must for the Hnery's Fork Angler and serious Spring Creek person. Buy it with Mike Lawson's spring Creek book, both are well done. Minor Cons: Could have used a detailed bibliography, more relevant pictures.

Excellent, well done

This book is overdue but well worth the wait. The writing is excellent as are the color photos. For a flyfisherman who wants to add to his/her enjoyment, this book provides good information and flies. Yes, the book's focus is localized but the thoughts and flies are universal. A book to be enjoyed and re-visited.
