Having hunted with Dalton and shared the life on the hunt with him, this book is no exageration as to the skills necessary for the Bear Hunter to possess. Dalton writes as he speaks, a straight and factual dialogue of a successful hunter. He is a Master of the wild and hero to America.

Wow! I could not put this book down! The author tells the tales in such great, vivid detail that he really puts you in the story! The wealth of knowledge gained from reading this book is awesome. Any bear enthusiast/hunter will greatly appreciate the honesty and bluntness spoken here. With good solid info on rifle calibers and ammunition and just straight common sense, this book gets the big thumbs up!

Excellent!

Too many books on hunting deer...not enough on bears. This is one of the few good bear books. It stands up there with Ben Easton's classic "Bears." Great hunting adventures with lots of good info for the aspiring bear hunter, like myself. To me, bears are the ultimate North American game, and Mr. Carr has produced an excellent source of both anecdotes and information.

Dalton Carr knows more than you do.

Even if you are a long time bear hunter, you will soon realize upon reading this book that Dalton Carr knows more about bear hunting than you do. Having taken 179 bears, this fellow has learned a few things about how do do it, and how to do it safely. His stories make for some memorable reading too.

One word of caution. If you hunt bear with muzzleloader or bow, you might not want to read this book just before heading into the woods. I just made this mistake and for the first time, I may bring a "back-up piece", juuuust in case.......

Wonderful stories and anecdotes of bear hunting

Dalton Carr draws upon his forty-one years of experience as a black bear hunter, predator controller on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington State, marshal of Red River in Colorado (where he killed "bad" bears); and a sport bear hunter in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming to write Tales Of A Bear Hunter. Dalton never used traps and dogs, but preferred to stalk his bears with a rifle and an tracking ability honed by his many years in law enforcement. Dalton shares with the reader more than wonderful stories and anecdotes of bear hunting as he reveals what to look for when tracking bear, why bear charges happen, what the best bullets and calibers are to use on bear, the best places to shoot a bear to deliver a killing shot, as well as safety issues when hunting bear. Tales Of A Bear Hunter is very highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever aspired to hunting bear with camera or with rifle, as well those with a keen interest in the rugged and demanding sport of hunting big game.

After reading "Sculpting in Time" (which I suggest is important reading to understand tarkovsky and his work), I was hoping that his diaries would shed some light as to the inner workings of the mind of a cinematic genius. Despite many moments of creative prose, and interesting streams of thoughts, on the whole, I was disappointed. I felt as if I were a distant observer to his memories and daily entries. Perhaps some of the work is dry because he didn't intend to have this published, whereas "Sculpting in Time" was (hence the more coherent, poetic and dynamic work) for the audience. It is a good read, the blood and guts of the artist himself, but once again, I would read Sculpting first.

Andrei Tarkovsky Diaries are real, 1st hand exprience from a talented writer and great cinematographer. He is giving reader a very real exprience from Russia in years 1970-1986. I wished I could read this book in it's original language when I felt it too close to my soul, and I wished pages never ended when I finished this book. Read it even if you are not a movie goer or watched none of his movies.

An Art book, writen by an artist.

Andrej Tarkovsky understood the truth of life, and dedicated his life to make us understand those important things. Mostly, in his films, but we shouldn't forget ¨Time Within time¨. To me, it's a guidebook to arts, and if you really want to understand what art is about, you shouldn't miss this book, no matter which art you're into. There's no better artbook, but a book written by an artist, and in this one, you'll not only find infomation on his screenplays, but his view and deep understanding on art.

This book stimulates the silent pace and rhythm of his work.

This is possibly the only book that captures the essence of Tarkovsky even better than his own "Sculpting in Time", which is surely one of the greatest film theory books ever written. Extremely personal, the diaries offer a close-up view of T., from daily minutiae to spiritual and emotional crises. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone who loves Tarkovsky.

At this time, this book book *is* in print in the UK, and is available from Amazon.com's British sister site, Amazon.co.uk.

We live in a changing world; thankfully there are unchanging principles that help steady us through it all. Leadership adapts and leadership is proactive, but true leadership is based on unchanging principles. Ron Hunter and Mike Waddell give us a fresh look at these timeless principles in their book Toy Box Leadership. Ron and Mike use the toys we all grew up with to share simple yet profound principles of what solid leadership really is. In a day when we are surrounded by an unending list of books presenting the latest leadership trends, it is refreshing to get back to the simple, basic lessons we can learn from childhood and the toys we all loved. I recommend Toy Box Leadership for anyone who has an interest in sharpening and streamlining their leadership abilities.

Groucho Marx, a none too small influence on one of the authors of this book, quipped in at least one film, "Why it's so simple a four year old child could understand it. Now go out and get me a four year old child cause I can't make head or tail of it." The principle serves the writers of this book well as they explore the toys- a fun variety of the toys we grew up with- in interesting and engaging ways. As other reviewers have noted, the book is all about the creative connections between the world of leadership and the toys we fondly remember.

One important side note to the book: it is a reminder that the toys of yesteryear are vastly superior to many toys of today, which hardly promote creative thinking or leadership. In addition, the writers rightly promote strong personal relationships as a cornerstone to good leadership.

As Groucho said, maybe four year olds are in touch with many of the somewhat simple skills we need to succeed in our too-complex and technologically driven contemporary society.

Michael and Ron have completed the most difficult task of weaving vivid illustrations with interesting anecdotes to present the basic qualities of proven leaders. A very ease read that I will continue to read several times in the upcoming years. Don't bypass this book because you think that it looks "childish." I can assure you that this book will challenge you. This is one of the few books that I would not hesitate to give to other leaders, regardless of their exposure to leadership materials. Great read and outstanding book.

Toy Box Leadership is a refreshing read on the subject of leadership. It is not a heavy academic tome written from the ivory tower, but a practical, innovative look at the subject from men who are using the principles. It is an ideal read on an airplane trip or waiting in an airport terminal. The short chapters, while tied together, stand alone and can be read in any order.

Part of the book's uniqueness is the authors' use of simple toys most of us remember to illustrate aspects of leadership that over get overlooked. The chapters on Lego bricks, the slinky dog, and little green army men are worth the price of the book. Everything else is icing on the cake.

I highly recommend the book. I plan to give copies to approximately 50 of our college's leading donors.

Another example of the "invisibility of the obvious"

When thinking about purchasing a book, don't be deterred by a book's title (initially, I was about this one) and don't base the decision solely on testimonials by an impressive list of business thinkers (although in this instance, their praise is justified). Rather, check out as many reviews as you can, especially Customer Reviews. Others have their own reasons for commending Ron Hunter and Michael Waddell on what they achieve in Toy Box Leadership. Here are two of mine.

First, they create a context for the creation and subsequent popularity of ten toys (i.e. LEGO® Bricks, Slinky® Dog, Play-Doh®, the yo-yo, Mr. Potato Head® and Rubik's Cube®, the rocking horse, little green plastic army men, Lite-Brite®, and Weebles®) and then, devoting a separate chapter to each of the ten, share thought-provoking insights on leadership lessons to be learned from each. I played with many of these toys as a child and then purchased them for four children and more recently for ten grandchildren. Frankly, the connections that Hunter and Waddell make never occurred to me. Once again, I am reminded of the "invisibility of the obvious." Consider these representative comments from the narrative:

LEGO® bricks "teach us that each individual [connection between and among a company's people] is interdependent on the next connection for success. The properly placed brick within a structure provides strength and substance and adds to the overall structure. Placing each person so he or she connects properly results in the healthy utilization of human resources."

"Being a Play-Doh® person does not mean you are weak, gullible, or even wishy-washy, but rather that you have determined to be molded in positive ways that are essential to their development." Such people are shaped the way they are because they are receptive to change and being changed, yet have "durable" character because their exact ingredients (i.e. humility, teachability, and desire to improve) allow the substance to have consistent integrity.

"The leadership lesson from the Mr. Potato Head® toy is that you must choose the right face for the right place when communicating." The face "is the courier of the message," an extension of one's emotions, and an interpreter of one's intent. According to hundreds of research studies in which millions of respondents participated, with statistics varying only slightly among the studies, the impact of face-to-face contact is determined as follows: body language about 50-55%, tone of voice about 30-35%, what is actually spoken no more than 15-20%. All great leaders have "presence" and that is largely the result of their physicality amidst those around them. Hunter and Waddell identify and then discuss "the eight faces that every leader must pack" and then be able to call upon, depending on what the given situation requires such as empathetic concern, a show of confidence, intensity of conviction, great disappointment, or sheer delight. "Remember, it's your first expression that makes the first impression."

"The qualities of the Rubik's Cube® puzzle that make it so intriguing are the same qualities that make it such a good example of ethics...The cube's color, depth, and dimensions represent the complexity of your ethics. As you solve the problems of life, this toy teaches the importance of making the right turns." As I read Hunter and Waddell's comments, I was immediately reminded of Jim Collins' admonition in Good to Great to "get the right people on the bus, get the wrong people off the bus, with everyone in the right seats." Proper alignment of resources with work to be done is indeed one of the greatest challenges all managers face.

"Weebles® toys teach durability, a mandatory characteristic for any successful leader. They teach you that staying down is not an option." (Years ago, Jack Dempsey said that champions "get up when they can't.") "A leader is never more closely watched than in the moments following a failure. When leaders fail, you immediately wonder what their next move will be." Leaders with endurance understand that falling down" is inevitable so they anticipate it, learn from it, and do all they can to avoid making the same mistake(s) again. Like Weebles® toys, effective leaders also have a center of balance. Theirs combines both internal factors (e.g. determination, resilience, and purpose) and external factors (e.g. support of colleagues, mentors, and prior experience). Being able to bounce back from adversity often tends to discourage one's opponents.

I also admire the skill by which Hunter and Waddell enable their reader to complete a process of discovery and reflection so that as the final chapter approaches, she or has accumulated the basic components of principled, results-driven leadership and can then assemble them as if they were (yes) individual LEGO® Bricks or parts of Mr. Potato. In this instance, I am reminded of what a French Romantic poet once said in response to an inquiry about how to write a poem. (I think it was Baudelaire but I'm not certain.) In so many words, he said, "First you draw a birdcage with its door open, then you wait and wait and wait and wait...until a bird flies in the door. Then you erase the cage." This is what Hunter and Waddell seem to have in mind when suggesting that "When you lay this book down and put away these toys, remember the lessons."

Congratulations to them on a brilliant achievement!

I take Mr. Hunter's book with me on hiking trips because there is ALWAYS a flower or tree that I need to know the name. This is an excellent guide for flowers. The clear, crisp photos show you what no illustration can. The detailed descriptions leave no doubt. It has become a goal of mine to photograph each new one that I encounter. If it hadn't been for "Wildflowers of Arkansas" I would have never been able to ID most of them.

As a footnote, if traveling near a statepark in Arkansas, go to their giftshop/bookstore and pick up your own copy--- for the list price. You can still find them and you'll save a few bucks. And while you're there pick up one more of his invaluable resources such as "Trees, Shrubs and Vines of Arkansas".

I never leave home without them...

This is a valuable resource for the naturalist as well as the wildflower enthusiast which describes 600 wildflowers found in Arkansas. Color photographs are provided for 484 flowers. Plants are arranged by family; this may seem awkward at first, but the book is well indexed. A glossary, state map showing regions, and diagrams of plant parts are other helpful tools provided in the book. This book is a must for me while hiking or driving the highways and backroads of my state. The only way Hunter could have improved this resource, is by providing a color guide for quicker idntification.

This is a very enjoyable book. The main character, Kylie, is charming, cute and funny and being that she just moved to the U.S. from Australia, she has a lot to learn about how things work, which leads to moments of hilarity. I especially enjoyed Julia Roberts, the cat. She is Kylie's companion in the book and is just as much of a character as everyone else. The people that surround Kylie are entertaining in their own way and well developed. The love story just begins to develop near the end of the novel and I can only imagine it's going to steam up in the rest of the series. I am anxiously awaiting to read the rest of them and absolutely recommend this one. I immediately liked the main character, I laughed a lot and I like Claire McNab's writing style.

Claire finally got it in this one. As one of her frequent readers I really enjoyed the latest of her novels. Here she combined action with character and love interest. The love interest should be still more developed since it came too late in this novel (last page), but at least Claire McNab has touched that topic in her latest novel and did not leave it out like in all the Carol Ashton or Denise Cleever novels. Way to go Claire, that looks like a good mix. Continue!

"The Womabat Strategy" is the first Kylie Kendall mystery by Claire McNab. I had never read any of Ms. McNab's other novels, so this novel was a treat for me. Kylie Kendall from Australia has inherited from her father 51% of his detective agency in Los Angeles, California. Her partner, Ariana Creeling wants to buy Kylie out, but Kylie intends to stay in LA and become a private eye. Kylie is gay and is very attracted to Ariana but is not sure of Ariana's orientation. The agency gets a major case when Dr. Dave Deer, a shrink to the stars, hires them to investigate the theft of patient records of 2 Hollywood personalities. After the thefts one of the patients, producer Jarrod Perkins, is found dead of an apparent suicide, but Kylie feels that he has been murdered. Kylie helps crack the case, but her life may be in danger when she is confronted by the killer. This mystery is very original and there are many comic moments as Kylie adapts to America. This fine mystery novel is highly recommended.

I loved the Los Angeles locales. The Humor made this novel work.

A fun story, absolutely perfect to bring to the beach. 28 year old Kylie is a unique character.

If you liked this book you will want to look for the other books in the series -

Kookaburra Gambit
Dingo Dilemma
The Quokka Question

Fun & Exciting!

I was happily surprised to find this was not your stereotypical story about hippies. The characters were all unique and there were surprises at every turn.I couldn't put it down, read the whole thing over the weekend. Now that I've read this very funny book I understand why the author calls it a "true tale". I highly recommend this book to parents to give as gifts to their teenagers. This is the first thime I've bothered to write a review, but I believe this book deserves applause.

I think we have found our female Tom Robbins. Luaghed all the way through but also found it very very thoughtful and provoking. Raising many issues about how we value money, our lives, and the environment. Finally a novel that presents meditation as a way of dealing with our life. Hurrah. hurrah Cal Morgan keep it going.

A full update of this guidebook, previously called the Adventure Guide to Florida's West Coast. This book takes in all the cities, towns, nature preserves, wilderness areas and sandy beaches that grace the Sunshine State's western shore. Covers Tampa Bay to Naples and Everglades National Park to Sanibel Island. Canoeing the Everglades, hiking on Gasparilla Island, exploring the history of Tampa's Ybor City - it's all here! Plus it has good town and regional maps.

"These useful guides are highly recommended... " Library Journal "[Adventure Guides] direct you away from the theme parks and into the great outdoors... the information on trekking routes, canoeing, wildlife refuges - even golf courses - is well researched." The Sunday Telegraph "...intended for the adventure-minded travelers with special affection for the outdoors and nature. Each Adventure Guide packs in outdoor-oriented activities set in different regions. There's something for nearly everyone." Midwest Book Review
