As for content and art this book is fabulous, but I was kind of expecting more prints. The layout they chose for the book is interesting and I don't really find it necessary other than for a wow factor. To me it really didn't add anything to the prints inside, but to be fair, it didn't necessarily take away either. This book defiantly features what I enjoy best about Amano's art.

A good buy for Amano fans or any artist interested in graphic art and/or inking.

I bought this book for my boyfriend, who is a huge fan of the series. I cannot speak from my own experience with it, but from his near fainting reaction upon receiving it, I would say it is definitely worth the money. From what he has said, the artwork is incredible. I would recommend it for any fan of the series or the art.

Awesome book.

The art in this book is detailed, beautiful, and breathtaking... I was blown away by even the pictues which were only sketches.

I recommend it highly to fans of Vampire Hunter D... as well as anyone who is an art fanatic or art book collector... or even just someone who loves Vampiric things in general.

Gorgeous book!

This book is HUGE, which it should be to show off the fantastic artwork. Loved it! All Vampire Hunter D fans should get it, just don't expect it to fit in your book shelf.. lol! Pay close attention to the dimensions in the item description. It also comes in a slip case to protect the book.

"That Death of the American Dream Thing"
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-07
This novel is a classic of American Literature in the same right as Moby Dick, The Scarlet Letter, The Catcher in the Rye, and countless others. True, it's not appreciated by everyone (as can be seen in the reviews below) but neither was and is Moby Dick. This is definitely a baroque classic too, and it was groundbreaking in its own time (which it may not be anymore, logically, but that's not all the book is about, far from that).

As some have said before me, it's indeed a great window open on an era now dead: the sad end of all the dreams of the 60's; and that is important to our own time because I am not sure we ever recovered from all those dead dreams. Even in my generation, I know a lot of people who still look back with major nostalgia even though they didn't even exist exist in the 60's. That was a very significant moment in time during the 20th century and it certainly set the setting for as far as today.

Some say there is no real plot to this book; much the same can be and was said about Moby Dick. I won't deny that, but I will point out that not all books are about "plots" and that there is ALWAYS a plot, no matter how minimal or nonsensical it gets. A trip to nowhere without any clear direction in search of the American Dream, what do you expect? A clear plot with obvious twists and the likes? Of course not.

That book is fun, disturbing, daring, and much deeper and serious than it may appear to the shallow reader. Definitely worth it, and definitely classic. Wandering around the still smoking embers of the Fallen Dream with Hunter S. Thompson is an experience you don't want to miss.

This was the first book by Thompson that I ever read, some 10 years ago, and it truly opened my eyes to an entirely new literary world of action and well, savagery. This is as odd, brutal, funny, strange, and well, savage, as other reviewers have pointed out. Mr Thompson has a brilliant way of writing that truly lets the reader feel the bad craziness that's going on in the story, or at least feel the adrenaline pumping. His descriptions and metaphors as indeed his language are spot on and incredibly well conceived (he did indeed have a vivid imagination). He always proclaimed later, that there was only one man who could've written "Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas", and I believe he is right.

I recommend reading the book in one go, take an afternoon with a good whiskey near by (only don't get so drunk you don't know the world around you) and read the book cover to cover. It's really a gratifying experience. You can leave out the drink, but the cover to cover in one go is a must. This way of reading really lets you feel the intensity of the story. And my oh my is it ever intense!

Highest possible recommendation. Get it now!

That so many people have tried to justify, make sense of and interpret Thompson's pseudo-fiction in literal terms only indicates how many asinine, clueless people have read this magnificently absurd book. All that's required when reading HST's drug-addled interpretation of his misadventures with Acosta is to simply ingest, and to set your inhibitive sense of reality aside while doing so.

In his correspondence, literature and journalism, HST ably explains how he rode the crest, slope and break of the most exciting, disheveled period in the history of American culture. His written discourse is invaluable for obtaining a clear understanding of a muddled and dynamic era, where dysfunction of many varieties constituted the norm and both the freedom afforded by a permissive society and its' technological advances were exploited for enormous personal gain. In a time when America is descending into a sanitized quagmire of mediocrity and sedation, we could only hope for so much.

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" by Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter Thompson practiced total immersion journalism. This form of reporting is called gonzo journalism.

Hunter Thompson drove to Las Vegas to report on a motorcycle race and ended up writing a story about himself writing a story about a motorcycle race. If he would have written a conventional report on motorcycle racing it would have been interesting to motorcycle enthusiasts for a few days. Since he wrote a gonzo story he had a very wide canvas and he used it well to create a classic.

The reader might be turned off by the obstreperous behavior, extreme self indulgence and offensive inconsiderate language. If you can look past this offensive conduct and you will see that Hunter Thompson gave us an insight into the American character of the 1970's.

No one does it like Dr. HST, may he RIP.

The savage pursuit of the American Dream . . . aaaaaaah love it!

This is a generational classic far superior to Catcher in the Rye, On the Road, Less than Zero . . . you name it.

It will change your life, even if it's "too late."

Live the dream, HST style.

As you work your way thru the book, The book paints a vivid picture from chapter to chapter, and does a great job of describing the emotions you go thru during the hunt, and the spring season itself. Tim's writings closely capture the conversations and story telling that goes on at the coffee shops, local hangouts, even when meeting up in the turkey woods. You can almost imagine sitting on a log with thermos of coffee during a mid morning break while the story is being told, and while you wait for the birds to start gobbling again!

This book is properly titled, so make no mistake about it, it is the tales of a dedicated turkey hunter. The intersting thing is Tim Herald tells you exactly how he feels about several different issues relating to the turkey hunting experience. If you are not a turkey hunter, this could very well be your best introduction to a sport that is rapidly growing as turkey become more prevalent.

I also feel that I now know the author better and would gladly share a turkey hunt with him anywhere. There is no doubt that he is dedicated to the sprot of turkey hunting and a man of high morals and sportsmanship. Thanks Tim for the fine reading.

If you're a master turkey hunter Tim will strike a cord that can only be felt from years of experience. If you were new to the sport you'd be doing yourself a favor to read it now. Because what Tim has been able to put into words sooner or later you'll experience it first hand in the turkey woods. When you read this book it's like sitting down and talking to an old friend, the pains, triumphs but most of all the memories. Great reading.

I recommend this book to novice turkey hunters, experts, or those just interested in a great read. You will really enjoy this book. It is an easy read, with plenty of action to keep your attention.

I met Joan at a writer's conference and got a copy of her book. I was intriqued by the cover. Joan was a little excited. Her book was selling really well, and was going into second printing. She should be excited. Finally I got around to reading a chapter or two. The truth is undeniable. The hope is reviving. The potential is unlimited. You might as well get yourself a copy. Healing the Whole Man may be the cheapest fix for what ails you - spiritually and physically - that you could ever buy.

The Bible tells us as Believers that we are to lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Joan Hunter not only spells out what God's Word has to say about healing, she clearly identifies many of the diseases which plague Christians and unbelievers alike. She provides specific, efffective prayers to enable God's healing power to minister to the individual. This is a very practical, easy book to understand and apply, one that is much needed today in the Body of Christ. I heartily recommend it.

Adamsky has produced a superb guide to the Hiring Process that is of great interest to Executives, Recruiters and Job seekers alike. The book is applicable to a wide range of industries well beyond the IT industry.

The book provides a great deal of actionable ideas that you can put into place now to improve your hiring practices, land the best candidates, and keep them as satisfied productive employees. Similarly, the book helps potential applicants better understand the hiring process and get inside the mind of hiring managers. It also contains a plethora of valuable and interesting ideas and commentary on the HR landscape. Truly an enjoyable and informative read !

As the MIS Director for a large educational institution, I have felt the impacts, first-hand, of recruiting and retaining top IT professionals in a tight job market. Yet there is clearly a methodical approach that can be followed to target the "right" employees and, once hired, ensure that they remain happy and content within your organization.

This book does an excellent job of outlining that process in a simple, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach. The author not only covers all aspects of the hiring process but also reminds us of best practices that we too often (and too easily) forget to ensure success once we bring top players on board.

This book was pertinent and informative. I intend to pass it around to all of the managers on my staff.

I didn't actually buy this book but won it as a door prize at an industry trade show. I tossed it in my briefcase and didn't give it much thought to it until I was stuck in an airport on my return trip home. Although I don't hire a great number of "information technologists", the book was filled with excellent advice for any manager. His advice applies to the dynamics of locating, interviewing, hiring and retaining exceptional individuals. I like to underline when I read, and when I finished the book I realized I had underlined just about everything! Don't let the title throw you off because this is an excellent resource that truly cuts across all industries. He has his hand on the pulse of human nature, and an incredible insight into those people who understand how (technically) the world works.

I have already given a copy to a friend that owns a small company and has found it a challenge to find and retain good people. If my friend follows the program outlined in the book I am sure he will see the results. One thing I really liked about Adamsky's writing style is that it's light on philosophy and academic drivel and packed solid with the experiences of someone who has obviously been in the trenches.

A boon to job seekers and providers alike

I feel better prepared to operate in today's challenging job market after reading this book.

As an IT professional I have had occasion to be on both sides of the interview desk. This book clarified and reinforced many of the beliefs that I formed from these experiences. However, I derived an even greater benefit from those sections that challenged my preconceptions. Mr. Adamsky's use of logic, examples, and self-deprecating humor helped me to see things from a different viewpoint. I am confident that a company can only benefit from the encorporation of his strategies.

The great thing about this book is that it was written by people with an inside view of "The business". Along with the most complete look at Tinsletown they add anecdotes and little known facts that make just reading the book fun.
And this book covers more that downtown, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It travels north to Santa Barbara and south to Long Beach and Catalina.
If you're headed for LA this is the book to get. Even as a died-in-the-wool Angeleno, I found this book informative, usefull and fun to read.

Although this book would probably be considered politically incorrect by the black community because it relate Collier's devotion to the South and the Confederate cause, it fills a void that's long existed in telling the true history of Mississippi's past. This book takes us through Collier's entire life from slavery through his final years in retirement when he became invisible and forgotten in the annals of history. It also does a good job in telling the story of Teddy Roosevelt bear hunt that led to the creation of the "Teddy Bear" as a result of the Nast cartoon. And it tells us that the legend that grew out of that hunt was in many ways incorrect or an oversimplification of the event.

Minor Buchanan does not approach this as a quick book project to make a few bucks by assembling a collection of anecdotes he collected around the state. He poured all his free time into research for quite a long time before even getting to the point of putting together a cogent retelling of Holt Collier's life. I've had the pleasure of knowing Minor for some years and can say that I have seen how devoted he has been to this project and how much he likes to talk about the history of this unique individual, especially things that he learned that simply couldn't be fit into the book's written word.

As a history major in college I developed a taste for the truth that can only be found in biographies. Over the years I have kept a small library in my home and under my bed to read at night, prior to retiring. The book by Mr. Buchanan is a detailed, accurate account of this man and his relationships to the men around him and his world. Being a product of the Mississippi Delta, I can see Holt Collier in the deep bayou's of the old Delta, hunting the bears. I admire the writer's style in his ability to place me there beside Holt all along the way in this book. There, in the realities of Holt's world, the reader walks his paths, thinks his thoughts, and feels the anger he feels.

Finally I would like to thank Mr. Buchanan for this effort and look forward to seeing more of his work in the future.

As an avid Faulkner reader, I cannot help but conclude that Holt Collier is the real-life person upon which the pivotal character of Sam Fathers is based. Beyond this observation, the book is well researched and is an excellent read. You will not be disappointed. HOLT COLLIER deserves a wide audience and should be assigned reading.

General evaluation of How to Heal the Sick
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-15
1. Is this an in depth presentation?

Charles and Francis are on a mission! They want all believers in Jesus Christ to be able to heal the sick, cast out devils and to operate in the supernatural. This is their motivation for writing How to heal the sick and they make it clear in chapter 1: Double vision for a single mission.
Their main aim for writing this book was to increase the faith of the readers while introducing them to various aspects of the healing ministry. The book is a good introduction to the healing ministry, covering various ways of healing and many testimonies. I would not regard the book as an in depth representation.

2. Did I agree with the way that the author interprets scripture?

Yes! I especially appreciated the way Francis interprets the story of Elijah's "death" in chapter 7. The principle is that just as Elisha SAW Elijah being taken up to heaven and because of that received the double portion, so we too must continually look at our situations with spiritual eyes. We must apply our faith to Holy Spirit inspired visions and persevere until it comes to past.
It is also clear that Charles and Francis interprets scripture by applying a childlike faith, thereby gaining access to power of God. It is reading, interpreting and applying scripture in this way that has the power to save lives.

3. Was there any new information?

This book has been a rehash of many of the things that I have learnt so far this year. Even so, there were a few things that were new information to me:
* The discussion in Chapter 18 about the benefits and healing achieved by growing out arms and legs.
* The revelation in Chapter 7 of Elisha "seeing" his destiny was not altogether new (it was covered in the book by David Yonggi Cho called The Fourth Dimension), but I found it to be very helpful.
* The discussion in Chapter 6 about SPEAKING to the mountain. Francis emphasises that it is not "Whatsoever ye pray" but "Whatsoever ye say unto the mountain" that will bring results.
* I also found Chapter 5 - Let the sick lay hands on you - very interesting.

4. What impact did the book have on me?

Francis and Charles are spirit filled and anointed and boy, do they know it!! If they are not speaking to the mountain, they are laying hands on the sick or having the sick lay hands on them! What I took from this book is a whole dosage of faith. Faith that God wants to heal people. Faith that God wants us to be acquainted with the supernatural and want us to flow in it as if it is natural. Once again, I was impressed with God's heart towards people. God is so generous with His healing power and I just sense that God wants all his children to flow in the power so that He can heal the whole world!

Coming from a Fundamental Baptist background, I was extremely skeptical about this book and the ideas in it. I must admit though when I reasoned with my spirit and not my mind, I could truly understand the Biblical relevance of healing and miracles for today! After applying the principles taught in this book, my husband's legs have grown to be even, his spine was straightened, my arms are now the same length, my spine has straightened, and my husband has administered healing to others as well. Excellent, excellent book.

Even if you don't agree with everything in the book, as I did not, you will see the love of Jesus in the authors and the fruit of their absolutely child-like faith.

In 1996, I was invited to teach in a Spiritual Warfare Bible College in Goiania, Brazil. During that year I was given one of Charles and Frances Hunter's books entitled, "How to Heal the Sick". That little book made such an impact in my life as I began to pray for the sick everywhere and they were getting healed. I recall studying and applying the principles described in the book, and teaching and encouraging my students to do the same. Some of the students got healed during the classes after experiencing God's power, then they themselves began to pray for people outside the classroom: in their homes, in churches, in hospitals, and on the streets. People were getting healed on a daily basis! They were being healed from all kinds of sicknesses and diseases as well as delivered from Satan's bondage.

This book deserves more than 5 stars. If you like adventure, action, mystery and a hero that stays 2 jumps ahead of the villains, this is it. There was enough romance and betrayal to make it interesting. I couldn't put it down and devoured each page racing to the next. So much excitement packed into this that I'm looking forward to the second of the series. Indiana Jones look out.

What a fun book! Can't wait for the next one in the series!!

This book was so much fun to read. I have not read such a 'page turner' in quite awhile. Some of the other reviewers here have compared it to the DaVinci Code. That is a good comparison since it deals with controversial Biblical themes - but the book actually had a stronger plot line than the DaVinci Code. And, I loved the fact that the main character has a romantic relationship during the story, another difference w/the DaVinci Code. The main character, Thomas McAlister, is perfect for a series; rough with a bit of compassion, intelligent but with some faults. The two other main characters, Ann, and DJ Warrant are fascinating. If you're looking for a fast paced book full of twists and turns this is it!

Fun, and a great start for an engaging protagonist

Unlike the other reviewers here, I can't tell you that this book is perfect. But it's got a lot of potential. Kingsbury has gone to great lengths to craft a well-researched and fun book with a solid hero and interesting plot. The plot in particular is interesting enough for me to recommend this book to folks who liked the Da Vinci Code - this book's storyline is also based on the Bible, but puts an archaeological spin on a couple of different cultures involved in a key Old Testament riddle. I liked that Kingsbury had done his homework.

Some of the personalities are a bit cliched - handsome blond archaeologist hero, stunning tanned heroine of questionable motivation, big ugly government baddie out to get them - but Kingsbury puts enough twists and turns in their path to keep you guessing as to who's doing what, and why. The locales his characters go to are fun and interesting, and I think it's no big stretch to say that the author is a fan of PJ Clarks. And for that I have to applaud him.

This is such a wonderful book. Because of the large success of the Dan Brown Da Vinci Code there are obviously some comparisons but that is unfair to this book. This book can stand on it's own as a book about a puzzle.

In this story the main character stumbles across a mention of a man going into a pyramid for two days with a mysterious package. From deciphering the story and solving a puzzle on a pyramid wall, the plot moves fast and furious.

I particularly like that the main character is all too human. He is excitable and falls in love and makes some mistakes in judgements.

This story starts moving early in the book and the action continues to the very end. I can hardly wait to read more by this author.

Enjoy.

An adventurous story in its own right

The Moses Riddle is an exciting mystery, following the struggles of an Egyptologist who discovers a lost account of a secret journey Moses made to Egypt after the Exodus. Following the clues in the text, the protagonist becomes enmeshed in a deadly riddle pointing toward a controversial treasure that ruthless religious factions will stop at nothing to obtain. Enhancing the exciting narrative is a personal challenge from the author - readers may test their riddle-solving, cipher-cracking skills to win a prize worth $5000! An adventurous story in its own right, offering a tempting, mind-bending secret sure to lure in any dedicated code-cracker.

Who would have thought that a book about such a topic would be a "page turner"? What a delightful, sensitive, poignant book! Appreciated Rev. Fanestil's honesty and self-disclosure as well as his easy writing style. So grateful for the spiritual disciplines identified in the second part. I will recommend this book to many, I am sure.

Every single one of us is going to die. We each have choices to make about who we wish to be at that moment. John Fanestil's serendipitous uncovering of the 18th and 19th Centuries' ritual of a "happy death" is an uplifting journey back and forth between the 26 year old Mrs. Hunter's life and death in 1801, and Mr. Fanestil's own experiences with family and parishioners in the present day. His thoughtful and compassionate writing reflects his truly non-judgmental manner, especially when discussing the fine line between "prolonging life" and "prolonging death". He is virtually silent on the question of assisted suicide, but he has provided a road map that certainly can help us decide how to live our lives with a healthy awareness of its unavoidable conclusion and the effect it can have on those we leave behind.

Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death captivated me. John Fanestil during his time as a Methodist minister met many people who embraced death cheerfully. He relates stories of people experiencing an enlightenment or feelings of devine love though they are ill and close to death. They are able to convey this holy feeling to thier loved ones. Then Fanestil, while reading 19th century methodist magazines learns of a common practice among methodists of the time, the "happy death". In the book he intertwines the story of one woman, Mrs. Hunter, who died in 1801 a happy death, with the stories of people he has ministered to. I found it incredibly comforting at this time when I have elderly and ill family members. He explains how the lessons he has learned can be applied now to help us live better lives. The book touched me deeply.

I am reading this thoughtful and eloquently written book before I go to bed at night.
It is much like a love letter God has tucked sweetly in between the lines and among the words the author has so carefully selected.
Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death will be an illuminating book for people wondering how such words as happy and death can be combined in the same thought. And for people who already feel comfortable with the idea that Spirit, God, is All in all, it is a wonderful confirmation of things they have felt to some degree or other since the day they first believed. The only thing that remains is whether to say, at the end of the book... Bravo...or Amen...

I thoroughly enjoyed Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death. Not only did the author present a history of Mrs. Hunter's "happy death," he also included specific examples of individuals from his ministry who prepared for death in this manner. I particularly enjoyed Part 2 of the book which presented spiritual lessons on living (using concrete examples) such as the exercise of prayer, recognizing the presence of God at critical moments in ones life and living in the present. Kudos to Mr. Fanestil!
