A Master at making the hard problems simple to understand.

The Late Dr. Conrade Hinds was a true master Professor of Physics and Mathematics. He believed that a smart child was a child that had mastered walking and talking. And having a confident knowledge of Physics and Mathematics helped people to understand the way and means of our physical world and the universe. And for this reason both Physics and Mathematics should be regarded as great gifts to be given with compassion for the student as an individual naturally eager to learn. The western world and particularly the United States has many mathematicans but very few actual math teachers with a compassion for sharing. Dr. Hinds prepared this book as a simple road map and back pack for beginners to see how the study of physics and mathematics relates to their immediate surroundings.

Although this book is currently out of print I hope that the publishers would consider producing a new edition for the new wave of young minds that have been miss guided into thinking that these are difficult subjects to master. Dr. Hinds understood the Underdog's effort to get an education. He was from Panama and didn't graduate high school until the age of 21 after working as a carpenter to build his high school. But by the age of 37 he was Chairman of the Physics Dept. at Southern University. This book is a great gift to all who wish to learn about their physical world.

This book really helped me to understand the properties of physics. This lab manual was easy to understand and the material was not only presented in a very easy to follow manner, but it was supplemented with many wonderful illustrations.

John Charles Ryle was a rare man - an evangelical Bishop of the Church of England in England in the last half of the 19th Century. Disrali made him Bishop of Liverpool as a last act of defiance as British Prime Minister.

Ryle was an amazing man whose many books are continually being republished for the next generation. His Expository Thoughts on the Gospels are all the work of a first rate mind - a man who communicates that which he loves so well - Jesus Christ. Of all his writings his passion for Jesus burns most brightly through these Expository Thoughts on the Gospels. Mark's Gospel is no exception. Originally bundled together with Matthew's in Ryle's writings, this recent publication takes the relevent parts for this short Gospel.

Buy his one, then buy the rest.

A look at what really happens when corporations rule the world. Dr. Picou explains the difference between natural and man-made disasters in terms of the social impacts they have. He presents the Exxon Valdez disaster from several angles, and takes the reader from the series of poor decisions and budget cutbacks that preceded the event through the ecological catastrophe to the legal and social morass that followed. This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the challenges we face in an era of corporate globalization.

An excellent guide to the costing, performance calculation and operation of farm machinery. The text is written extremely well and is easy to comprehend. Topics include machine performance, power performance, operator performance, costs, power and equipment selection, most farm operations are included. Only critism is that the computer programs are in Basic language (Excell would be prefered). Although principally for students of farm machine management, it would prove useful for any consultants or contractors dealing with farm machiney.

heart-opening revelation of God!

Review Date: 2005-02-26
I started this book only a week ago, and am almost finished. It's one of the best books I've read about the scriptural truth of God's great love for us, and how He intends for our relationship with Him to be lived out in our day to day lives. Reading it was like bringing into focus many things you could almost see but yet were still not quite clear. It also exposed some faulty thinking on my part and revealed places where I was not walking in the complete security of my relationship as God's child, but instead had believed lies and half-truths about myself, God, and the magnitude of what Jesus did for us on the cross and in the resurrection.

I know this will be a book that I will read many times, like a reference book where you can go the parts you need as a reminder and refresher when you feel confused. Very well written, and blessed me a ton!!

Review Date: 2006-05-28
A fantastic look at retriever training at the end of the 19th century. This book is only available from Orion Dog Supply as an ebook reproduction. This is a digital ebook reproduction of FETCH AND CARRY, the landmark book on retriever training, written in 1894 by B. Waters, and published in 1895 by Forest and Stream. This is a high-quality digital book in two formats on one CD-ROM; Adobe PDF ebook and MP3 audio. In the PDF version, the entire book is included; from the front cover to the last page, every word and every picture has been painstakingly reproduced in beautiful digital detail. In the MP3 version, the text from each chapter is read using the latest AT&T Natural Voices® technology. Download it to your iPod or other MP3 player and listen on the road, in the airport, while you are running, or wherever you have some time to spare, or just listen on the computer.

The year was 1895...
...Grover Cleveland was President
...Custer and his men had been wiped out at the Little Big Horn a mere 19 years earlier
...The Wright brothers were still eight years away from their historic first flight
...The Labrador and Golden retriever breeds did not exist in the 44 states that comprised the United States of America
...Women could not vote
...The American Kennel Club was ten years old
...Babe Ruth was born
...Frederick Douglass, American ex-slave and author, died
...Buckminster Fuller, American architect, was born
...The first professional football game was played in Latrobe, Pennsylvania
...Booker T. Washington delivered the Atlanta Compromise Speech
...George B. Selden was granted the first U.S. patent for an automobile
...Wilhelm Röntgen discovered a type of radiation later known as X-rays
...Forest and Stream published FETCH AND CARRY, the first retriever training book ever written!

One hundred eleven years after it was first published, FETCH AND CARRY is not an easy book to find, and surviving copies are frequently in poor condition. For the retriever trainer, whether pro or amateur, the book is an absolute treasure. It was the first book ever published specifically dealing with training retrievers. It's all here: marking, memory, force-fetching, blind retrieves using hand signals, field trials, and more. This milestone book is now available and accessible to all retriever enthusiasts on computer CD-ROM. FETCH AND CARRY is a must for every retriever trainers library. I first read this as a grade-schooler, as the condensed version in Reader's Digest, and later found the full edition at a book fair. It is one of the most fascinating, and frightening, books I have ever read.

Paul Ehrlich's "The Population Bomb" postulated a worldwide pandemic of this disease which killed off 1/4 of the earth's population a la "The Stand", but it would not happen this way; the virus mutates and weakens too readily.

Some other updates on key players in this book:

Rose and Lily "Penny" Pinneo are retired and live together in Sebring, Florida.
Dr. John Hamer and his wife, Elsie, live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dr. Wilbur Downs died a few years ago.
The author, John Fuller, died in 1991.
I was unable to find Dr. Sonja Buckley online. (Edit, 3/2/06: Dr. Buckley died in 2005.)
Jos, Nigeria is in the throes of civil war. Nigeria has not been affected by AIDS as profoundly as other African countries, but it is a significant problem.

The book is a relatively quick and easy read. Although it is out of print, it is not hard to find.

This is not a field guide per se, but a field guide to the geological features of the area of Southern California from Los Angeles to Mammoth Mountain.

The book is an excellent roadside companion that will provide you a "blow-by-blow" description of the geological features and other points of interest along 395, which travels along the eastern side of the Sierra's in the Owens Valley. By using mile signs and landmarks, the author provides an easy to understand narrative of geological and other natural features along route 395. The author also includes places that have historical interest as well. The book can be used driving either north to south or vice versa. A great drive-along source of information to break up a trip and provide insight to the recent geological history of the Owens Valley. By reading the book to each other as my wife and I trade off driving, we know the story behind the scenery. We would never have known about the scenic fish hatchery at Lone Pine, that resembles a Tuscan villa in Italy, which was built in about 1918.

There is also a companion book that discusses the geology in and around the southern deserts.
