The Dolphin reader is a collection of Essays

These collection of Essays are thought provoking. I first read this entire book back in 1990 when it was required reading for my English 101 Class in College.

We were not required to read the whole book, but after taking the class, I found that I could not get enough of these essays, and so I ended up finishing every one of the essays.

If you want a place to go for a collection of writings from some of the most prominent writers in our time, this is the book for you.

I was floored by the horror and the plot!

The Plot Was PHENOMINAL!!!
I was amazed by the quick paced, page turning style that the author used. This book takes you all over the country and the plot keeps getting thicker and thicker the further you read. What started out as a simple romance between a man and a woman that meet on the internet turns into a string of heinous murders and then two friends trying to figure out what is going on and a woman that get [taken advantage of] by the system and then gets lured into The Dominion Corp. Then, while this is going on, you have people turning up dead in Atlanta from toothpaste laced with nitroglycerine and the Mayor of Nashville trying to hide from Michael and Billy. I can't wait to read the next book by Carl Hunt!

Charming and whimsical

Our four-and-a-half-year old just loves this charming and whimsical introduction to the alphabet. The ten little dragons are lying around the cave bored so Ma Dragon sends them on a scavenger hunt to find items A to Z. Each panel that follows shows one item (e.g., 'i' is for iguana, 'q' is for queen) and after the dragons have rounded up all the items, they line them up in alphabetical order. Sounds prosaic, but really it's just delightful.

Praise for the Goat-Man
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-18
Craig Paulenich's The Drift of the Hunt is a book decades in the making. His work has been published in dozens of publications. In this book a persona speaks, the Goat-Man, and he says things we need to hear. Great names lend weight to the blurbs on the back cover--Howard McCord, Ted Enslin, Gail Wronsky--but their opinions should mean less in this instant than what the Goat-Man himself says, in this case about:

My Great Great Grandmother

My Great Great Grandmother had
a blind eye like a window.
She sat on a chair in the woods.
She wore woolen stockings, dark dress.
There were no flowers on it.
She hid a tail beneath that dress.
She had hands like catchers' mitts,
like meathooks, she
baked those two children,
she ate that girl.

Here is a bit of Paulenich's craft for all to see. The poem begins quietly, almost quaintly--but the opening lines are short, terse, nervous-making. Just past mid way the reader encounters "a tail beneath that dress," and the terse short line pattern is broken, the mythic elbows you in the face in the last three lines with images flung out of myth and tipped with barbed hooks of dark stories half remembered. We are drawn inexorably to another world, a world, as Wronsky says, of dark magic, explained to us in refined, polished poetry that spills out of the mouth of the Goat-Man. And this is one of the shorter poems here. Sharper hooks, darker journeys, await.

Be sure of several things. Paulenich's is a name that will be heard more and more often. The Goat-Man can be disturbing--but no more than the world he spills onto us with indelible words. And this is a must-read book of poetry for those who don't fear a peek at Us, our American myths, our hidden ways. What Neil Gaiman did with _American Gods_, Paulenich does more neatly, with a sharper blade. After Drift of the Hunt, it will not be long before we have more opportunities to hear from this important poet.

Important contribution preserving 19th C Cornish folklore
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1997-10-16
Robert Hunt's book continues today to be an important work, frequently cited by contemporary scholars, in that it captures a priceless collection of Cornish folklore that was already disappearing in the 19th Century. Had these stories, legends, and tales been lost, the world would have lost some very enjoyable stories indeed. This is a book to which I continually refer. It is an invaluable addition to my collection and I highly recommend it. It is broken into sections of related tales and is very easy to read. I have re-read these stories often and enjoy each visit. I would have liked to have met Mr. Hunt. Bill Rowe

Besides having the capability to produce the most popular "chaos" pictures discovered, this should read program accompanied by book. The more sophisticated the readers knowledge of non-linear dynamics, the more powerful this program becomes. This does not mean the reader needs to know C++ to work it (thank the fractal gods). This set up is a must for beginners in non-linear systems. The learning curve is about 2 hrs. and is easier than most window based applications. While most of the computations and graphs can be done in Mathcad (Matlab etc.), some of the special application functions would be very time comsuming. The best feature for this reader was the "add your own functions for testing" which has a significant file of reader's previous work to be analysed. This app. resides (in the desk top) along with Feedback and Control apps. ODE solvers, and the readers wavelet analysis. (just to show how useful it is).

New insight from some well-known academics

This one's great. It provides a fresh look at e-commerce and how businesses organize their virtual operations. It goes beyond the hype of guru texts and looks at real examples and frameworks to help understand them. Whilst I haven't really heard of some of these examples, others are well known - like KLM. It has academic depth, if that's what you want, and contributions from some famous and less well known professors.

...because it's easier to navigate.

When teaching last year, I often referred to Driscoll & Nagel's third edition but had difficulty with the format. They squeezed too much in each panel. They used too many unsual sidebars. They obscured the basic content with their layout...

...but this is much better. The most impressive section is Chapter 6(Families and Communities) because of their strong "closer looks" into real-life applications of the content. An added superelative is a section on the education of homeless children.

It's not even that expensive.

As a young boy, I had the privilege of knowing Maria Linke as a neighbor of her sister when she lived in the small town of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. She was an amazing woman. She shared her personal war time experiences with friends, neighbors, church groups and all who wanted to know the truth of wars devastating toll on humanity. Her book details the events of her life as a prisoner of the Russians during the war. It is a story of immense faith. After reading the book, you will wish that you had an opportunity to know her and her family first hand.

I love this cookbook. I even gave away my Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking cookbook. The cookbook is so easy to understand. All the recipies really on have 4 ingredients. I made the lime chicken and it was so tasty. It is now in my regular food rotation.
