Fun and Wisdom at the Same Time

Most lab manuals are big, boring, tombs that instantly set the student on guard. Professor Fox's offering is quite the contrary. Besides being concise and up to date (also see the updated 2000 edition), the book includes a series of educational diversions that help the student master subject content both within the lab and in the lecture hall. For example, she has included a section on DNA fingerprinting that encourages the student to construct an "origami DNA" to illustrate nucleotide synthesis. In summary, a great introduction to cell structure and function in the laboratory.

A book that helped change public opinon

This is the book that originally started changing the opinion of the American public regarding government policy toward the native tribes. Helen Hunt Jackson wrote this book in the 19th century, not the 20th, and it took many years before she saw the tide of public opinion start to change, but it was well worth it: when you're right, you don't back down even if you're a lone voice in a wilderness.

I highly recommend this book, and am glad I could obtain such a historic text for my own.

Essential reading regarding mistreatment of Native Americans

Helen Hunt Jackson was a pioneer in the movement by "palefaces of conscience" for more humane treatment of the American "Indian". She (through her writings) was responsible for elimination of the worst abuses by the US Army and the Indian Bureau. This book (the capstone of her research) outlines the findings she made the original wording of treaties with various tribes and how the whites, not the Native Americans, had been the ones to abrogate the treaties.

Anyone interested in justice for Native peoples needs to read this book. I found it hard to obtain through the library systems in the Philadelphia, PA area (and we have some of the best available). I highly recommend this for any citizen who considers themself informed.

I liked this book because Cassie begins to think about politics--something most teenagers don't think about often. Plus there is adventure and music and real life-situations that make Cassie think.

Through the eyes of Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie, Donald Hunt takes us inside Temple basketball and the tough-love world of Don Chaney. It's a thoughtful look at a coach who has made integrity the center of his program. How few other coaches can make the same claim? A longtime observer of the Philly sports scene, Hunt knows this subject top to bottom.

Tall on the Outside - Tall on the Inside!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-14
The folks in Earl Gladstone Hunts early life helped shape this East Tennessee leviathan - a giant, a bridge builder, a preacher in the Methodist itinerant ministry - one who occupied the episcopal office for twenty-four years. He is also an educator - college president, and evangelist - President of the Foundation for Evangelism. Throughout his ministry his central theme was telling the message of Jesus Christ, His birth, life and teachings, sacrificial death and resurrection, to an anxious, disoriented world.

In the "Bridge Builder" chapter, Hunt is likened to a bridge with tensile strength allowing traffic in both directions. The biographer relates a number of areas that seemed almost impossible to bridge. Yet with respect for those with whom he worked, he diplomatically built those bridges.

While driving on icy roads, if one overcorrects in any direction, it could bring disaster. Bishop Hunt has steered with a strong, steady hand through many treacherous roads. Racism was addressed all across his tenure but he names the homosexual issue as the one that stimulated the most mail response. Hunger, the Bomb, disintegration of family life, drugs, poverty, housing, struggle for freedom, excesses of affluence, and he even addressed the process of episcopal elections. He considered the most important assignment of his career the task of working with a committee and preparing a statement that would reflect the needs of Wesleyan tradition in the contemporary world.

His experience as a College President, his commitment to evangelism and his visibility within the church was providential for the Foundation for Evangelism. The chairs of evangelism in the seminaries will insure that his contribution will live in the lives of seminarians for decades to come.

Dr. James Logan has done a masterful job of reporting on one of the heros in the faith. Bishop Hunt is not only tall on the outside - he is tall on the inside. Would that there were hundreds more like him!

Excellent text for Chemistry students w/o the math!!!!

ChemCom is an excellent option for the high school chemistry teacher looking to build a larger base of students. With its "hands-on" approach to learning chemistry, more students (including those deficient in higher mathematics) can discover the "chemical" world around them. Through ChemCom's "real-life" examples and problems, all students can discover the 'ins' and 'outs' of chemistry

Very touching story

Review Date: 2006-08-07
This book was very good. It should be read by foster parents, as well as anyone who loves children, caretakers, parents and even grandparents. This story is about an elderly couple who had raised over 50 foster children that they later adopted, as well as 3 of thier own. They are fighting for Christina, a young girl they were fostering since she was an infant. It will make you mad how the Department of social services treated the family. It's hard ot find a nice family who won't abuse foster children, but it appears as though they don't do any justice for the good parents out there either. This book is a very touching book, it even mentions relaigion, and describes the prayer that Mrs. Lubben says each day., She feels Godis on her side and continues to keep faith throughout the story. The book is wonderful. I'd definitely recommend it. Matter of fact, I'm going to read it again.
Happy reading!!!!!!!!!

Great book for family reading at Christmas
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-23
I have used this book for two years during Advent to read aloud to my family as we finish dinner. My 12 year-old at first thought it was silly, but she is always captivated by the stories. I like the blend of fiction, nonfiction, sentimental, and compelling selections. We have learned about Christmas for some Civil War soldiers, read some old classics such as The Gift of the Magi, and discovered some new authors we like. I highly recommend the book as a way to combat the secular focus of Christmas, without being preachy.
