Stephanie Stanley was a reporter for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans in 2002. She proves to be a talented true crime author with this book.

There is a common theme with some serial killers-an abusive petty criminal breaks the law with impunity and recieves little or no punishment. As a child nothing is his fault. Derrick Todd Lee shares that theme with Kenneth McDuff.

The investigations into the multiple murders that Lee committed were hampered by two factors. First, the usual routine of looking at those closest to the victims as suspects. Husbands and boyfriends. Next was the F.B.I.'s profile that suggested a white male was the serial killer. The author spotlights the pain and disappointment of victims' families as well as some members in law enforcement that believe Lee could have been investigated 5 years earlier, sparing lives of latter victims.

Another problem in the investigations was the fact that he killed in multiple jurisdictions, crossed racial lines in selecting victims, and used different means of killing. A versatile murderer. It took time for authorities to link up the crimes.

As with many cases, DNA evidence was crucial in eventually connecting Derrick Lee to 6 victims. The author explains some of the process without getting too technical.

"An Invisible Man.." is one of the better, recent true crime books that I have read. I recommend it.

This is a must read if you like to be scared and love true crime. I read a lot of true crime but must say this book really got me scared. Reading it late at night, I double, triple checked all the locks before I went to bed! This story of a serial murderer who gets into women's houses in nice neighborhoods to brutally murder them, is frightening and terrifying.

VERY WELL WRITTEN

I read loads of true crime, and this one is very well written and is a good story. I wasn't familiar with this case and I like to learn the details of a case as I go along, and that is the way this is written. Some true crimes give the ending away in a preface, or a first chapter which I do not like. This is very a very intersting case of a serial killer, and I can only imagine the horror this man inflicted, seemingly for his own satisfaction. Well, I guess that is the definition of a serial killer/psychopath/sociopath. Call him what you will, he is an awful man and belongs where he is! Held my interest from first page to last page. Hopefully Stephanie A. Stanley has written other books ..... I keep up-to-date on new true crime books through the search button at Amazon, and always read the reader reviews, if there are any. This book had good reviews, and they were right on. Thanks to all the readers who review at Amazon!

This book is a tremendous resource for anyone who does teambuilding! Included are activities that can be done on a "shoestring" budget as well as some more advanced initiatives. Especially helful is a section with plans on building props for team building activities! A few "old classic" activities are included, but it mostly covers new activities.

Almost as good as in person

Jim Cain recently conducted a workshop for our ACA group. He mentioned that the book came about because he was giving out a thick stack of hand-outs at his workshops that were darn close to a book. So he put them together and created this book. The energy and spirit that Jim shows in his workshops is clearly reflected in this book. Although nothing can really replace an "in-person" demonstration of the activities, this book gives clear explainations and examples in a "how to" format. Along with a section on how to build many of the activities with supplies easily available at many home improvement centers. There are activities for youth, schools, camps, corporate; large budget or small budget. This book is an excellent investment.

This is a MUST BUY for anyone who in involved in training or education. The vaule of the book is so much higher than the acutal price. Once again. This is a MUST BUY for your personal or business libaray.

I have worked on challenge courses for nearly ten years and used much of what I do there in my other life as a middle school teacher. This is the best single volume I've seen. I was thrilled to read up on some truly new ideas as well as most of the tried and true stalwarts. Too often I've bought a book only to find that it is a repackaging of ideas that have been around a while. There is some of this, but plenty of innovation. The descriptions are clear and Caine has provided step-by-step instructions for making all of the equipment described in the book. They also comprehensively list other books, equipment vendors, organizations, etc.

If you know someone who's budget allows only one book, this is a great place to start.

Useful and Useable

Possibly a top five choice for those beginning an experiential-adventure education, resource book library.

Very good written and visual descriptions. In addition, the authors focused a great deal on assisting the reader in identifying and locating the resources and tools necessary for each activity and initiative. The detailed information is useful for both purchasing and creating additions to your equipment bag of tricks. This feature alone has been very attractive to those browsing through the book at our introductory level, facilitator workshops.

The book features a good blend of low prop, portable activities along with less-portable intiatives. Also, helpful variations of activities such as the spider web and bull ring are provided.

You may find less expensive, activity books, but this remains an excellent value as a quality resource book.

For those looking to begin a library - this is one of my top five recommendations. If you are an experienced facilitator, you will likely find good information, but you may not find the book as valuable as a less experienced facilitator.

I had read some of Georgette Heyer's books when I was a teen-ager. Somehow I found this book in a bookstore and I bought it right away. One of the reasons I hadn't read Georgette Heyer for a long time is her heroes are always so much older than the heroines, that said I was pleasantly surprised with this book as Abigail is a matured woman and the relationshop between her and the hero is believable and is between equals.I just loved the book and recommend it highly. This book shows how you can write a romance story without the book mentioning even the word 'sex'.

I wish Georgette Heyer had written more books!!!!!!!!!!

Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?

There are two bad boys here, both of them Calverleighs, but the younger, Stacey, is really bad. He's a fortune-hunter who is trying to con Fanny, a young heiress, into an elopement. The older, Miles, is Stacey's uncle, lately returned from his banishment to India, twenty years before, for trying to elope with Celia, who later became Fanny's mother!

But Miles had really loved his Celia, unlike Stacey, who doesn't care a bit for Fanny. Then there is Abby, Fanny's aunt, who is only 28 but acting as her guardian. Abby has to try to extricate Fanny from Stacey's lures, but since she is falling under the spell of the extremely funny Miles, it's a difficult task.

This book has some of Heyer's funniest dialog. Although very similar to her last novel, "Lady of Quality" (also a whopping good read), this one stands on its own and is well worth reading. And rereading. And so on. I've read it many times in the past 40 years, and it still makes me laugh. The ending is marvelous, and all the resolutions perfect in their way!

First, I must say that when Georgette Heyer is good, she's incomparable. And the two wittiest dialogues I have ever read are in The Black Sheep and The Reluctant Widow. At some point in each of these books, a man and woman are carrying on a discussion about two entirely different things and it's just wonderfully funny as it dawns on the reader that they aren't on the same page. I don't know of anyone else in the Romance genre who has pulled this off as well. I'm surprised no one has ripped off either of these storylines - they are highly original and thoroughly entertaining. I only wish these two books were available on CDs or audio download. They are amongst her best.

Return of the Black Sheep

Review Date: 2008-04-26
'Black Sheep' is one of Georgette Heyer's later Regency novels and shows all her skills as a writer, including her much-praised historical accuracy for this period. The 'Black Sheep' of the title is Mr Miles Calverleigh, a gentleman who was sent to India twenty years before after shaming his family. Unfortunately for Miss Abigail Wendover, the absent Mr Calverleigh's nephew Stacy is apparently trying to beguile her spirited niece Fanny in order to get his hands on her fortune. Abigail and her sister Serena have stood as parents toward Fanny for many years but Abigail begins to discover that Fanny has grown up enough to want to rely less on her aunt and more on her own heart.

It is into this situation that Miles Calverleigh steps, having finally returned from India. The first scene between him and Abby, a case of mistaken identity, is a wonderful example of Heyer's skill in writing two spirited and interesting characters. Abigail tries to get Miles to help separate his nephew from her niece but she finds herself thwarted by his apparent lack of interest in the cares of others and his apparent wish to thwart her own strict views on being a support to her own sister which may prevent her from following her heart.

There are some similarities between this book and 'Lady of Quality', also written late in Heyer's career, not least in the age of the heroes and heroines who aren't the youngsters of 'Friday's Child' or 'Cotillion' but are mature people who may perhaps feel that the opportunities in life have passed them by. As usual the side characters are excellent in this story, including the very amusing Mrs Clapham and even the straighlaced James Wendover. This book seems to contain less of the cant phrases that can render some characters in other books almost incomprehensible but the overall standard of dialogue is excellent. 'Black Sheep' makes an excellent introduction to Heyer's Regency novels and can be enjoyed again and again.

A Study in Family Relationships

I think that in emphasizing the romance, Heyer gets short-changed as a story teller. Not to say that the romance is not enjoyable but that there is a bit more depth to this book than the evolution of a relationship between two people.

The plot of this book revolves around families-- the good, the bad, and the indifferent-- and the demands they make on their members. Abigail and Selena Wendover are the youngest and the eldest daughters of a large family. They have always reminded me a bit of Jane and Cassandra Austen although it is just their circumstances and personalities that remind me of thsoe two, not the story itself.

Abigail is the younger and livelier. At 28 she is one of the older Heyer heroines. Selena is some years Abigail's elder, more staid, a bit hypochondriacal and not as quick witted. Both had been disappointed in youthful love affairs due to the intervention of their father who had thought the young men unsuitable for his daughters. Abigail, while she does not remember her father with any fondness, is willing to admit that he was probably right in scotching her early infatuation. She recognizes that her feelings at 18 were not soundly based. Selena, however, takes comfort in the fact that their mother had prophesied her curate suitor would have gone bald before he was 40.

Between them they are raising a young orphaned niece, a lovely heiress who is turned 17 and preparing for her introduction into polite London society.

Unfortunately, a young man in the person of Stacy Calverleigh has arrived on the scene, intent on making his fortune by marrying into it. Abigail, who is visiting her sister in London, is sent post haste back to Bath by her prudish older brother, James, to try to resolve the situation. Then, in a good mistaken identity scene, Abigail meets Mr. Calverleigh, but it is Mr. Myles Calverleigh, the family black sheep returned from India, that she runs into at York House not Mr. Stacy Calverleigh. Part of the interest is in the reaction of the women of Bath society to the Mr. Calverleighs, contrasting the nephew's polished manners to those of his graceless uncle.

Myles is indifferent to Stacy-- sharply differing with the other uncle/nephew pair in the story. He repeatedly says that he has no interest in his family or for that matter, Abigail's family. However, when things need sorting out, it is Myles who sets actions in motion that lead to a most satisfying resolution.

This is a five star read all the way.

Guidance and Hope

I think this is a fabulous item. I am a born again Christian, I was Pagan for a few years until I found the Lord again and got saved but it always had been told to me that Tarot is bad and I should'nt get it read. When I was a Pagan I always read my cards with amazing accuracy, but more for direction, so I can look at my past was and the path Im heading on, to better prepare for and stay focused on the future. I think these cards are great becuase they use biblical teachings to give us guidance on our lives. The bible takes on a whole new understanding and meaning to me and I love looking at the bible versus and compairing them to my life and findng "hidden meanings" in the messages. Sometimes I wonder if this is truly Tarot hidden in biblical cards, but I guess the only way to make this bad is if I was reading these to forcast my future instead of to gain better understanding as to what is going om in my life. I love the questions and suggestions she has at the end of every lot or sign. The only reason why I did not give this 5 stars was becuase she wrote in the introduction "I encourage you to treat the life of Jesus as myth, which is not to say that His life didn't happen as recorded. But, rather than viewing it as history, something that occured almost two thousand years ago, see it as a metaphor for you own life today." Casting LOTS, pg.1 I understand her point behind this and wanting us to see these as metaphors, but I dont think treating Jesus' life as a myth helps or harms that. I look at these as metaphors for my life but knowing that this isnt a myth and I think it draws me closer to the Holy Spirit when you read this knowing, Jesus went through this two thousand years ago and how what He went through and what He did can help us now. That one sentence could have been left out, otherwise this was a great book and great cards :)

Thank you for this wonderful tool. I was given this set as a gift, put it aside and just recently rediscovered Casting LOTS. The author's combining of familiar Bible passages along with sound advice, helpful questions and very clear text makes this a must have for any card reader. It's also wonderful for those new to giving readings as the step-by-step directions are so clear and concise. The readings I have given using Casting LOTS have always been exactly right and precisely what the person needed to hear.

Thank you for a wonderful set of intuitive cards.

I have a practice in energy medicine here in Mississippi and as part of my work, I send out a monthly newsletter that goes out to clients and interested others around the U.S. and several foreign countries. Two months ago, a friend suggested that I check out "Casting Lots - An Oracle of the Holy Spirit," the meditation cards created by Ann Dorian of Massachusetts.
Ann did a reading for me, which was right on the mark. Since I do divination, also, it merely reaffirmed what I had seen, and in a different way that allowed me greater perspective. As part of my work, I deal with people from all walks of life. They include Buddhists, pagans, Christians, Jews, all colors, black, white, Native American. A problem of sorts I've noticed has been a lack of Christian-based meditative guides that are inclusive, not exclusive, and provide insights without tending to trample on beliefs. Ann has walked this difficult line with these cards - offering insights in a way that are comfortable to Christians, without being threatening or dogmatic to others.
As a result of the good experience I received from her reading, and using the cards (which are now becoming quite popular among my circle of friends), Ann offered to do readings for subscribers to my newsletter. The response has been overwhelming. This week, she wrote:
"Thank you so much for extending the time to do readings... I heard from people in Holland, Canada, Japan, Hawaii, CA, Texas, MS, CO, Ohio, PA, FL, NJ, MA, TN, and many other places that I don't remember or they didn't say. I was also invited to give readings at a metaphysical bookstore in FL when I am down there next week. Thank you for making this possible."
Some excerpts from feedback:
-- "I am absolutely stunned by the `right on' feeling I had reading your message. The explanations that you have taken the time to send are wonderful." -- P.K.in FL
-- "That was a terrific reading. I really felt it pull in areas I've already been lead towards." -- Cliff
-- "I am overwhelmed at the depth -- you got to the crux of what I have been denying." -- Janet in Canada
-- "I can't tell you how wonderful your reading was. I expected accuracy from your reading since I had an inner nudge to contact you, but I was simply unprepared for how chillingly accurate you were. This is easily one of the best readings I have had and that is saying a lot. I've been around the block as they say. Thank you so very much! I would like to purchase your divination system. The way you write and the intuitive understanding you bring is amazing. I've never been a huge Bible advocate but the Truth you tell from the Bible is far deeper than the text I've experienced before." -- L. 816 area code
-- "This seems accurate to me and on track to what I've been mulling. I was raised Catholic and long ago made peace with the negative aspects of the upbringing. What I've retained is the symbolism and ritual which is nurturing. These cards speak to that aspect of my nature." -- CM 858
-- "Please let me tell you that this reading has finally allowed me to break through some really yucky blocks as far as men go! This oracle is important to unity and healing on the planet because it builds a bridge between forms of spirituality. It heals the Christ-wound many holistic people may have experienced through its high vibration and loving explanations." -- Stephanie
-- "I am overwhelmed by the amount of information and the sophistication of your text. You have provided all the ingredients to give me precisely what I need." -- DH
-- "I was absolutely astonished at how accurate the reading you gave me was! Something I had written thirty minutes before in my journal showed up verbatim in what you wrote, as well as the exact Bible verse I had quoted to myself that same morning in the shower." -- T in Tenn.
-- "I found the messages that were pertinent to me in all of the cards that were very illuminating." -- PG 619 area code
-- "I feel so different this week. Through the readings I received confirmation of thoughts long held inside of me, seeking some sort of way to make them happen. That has been my position for quite some time now -- waiting for those things to happen. But all of a sudden, I am feeling the inner conviction and the energy to make them happen myself. It's as if the way has been cleared . . . . The reading has been very revealing and affirming for me and for that, I thank you."
Naturally, Ann cannot do everyone's readings with these cards. But I can attest to the fact that they work, and they work well, and I would recommend them to anyone with a Christian background who is interested in exploring further the realms of insight and meditation such guides offer.
Many Blessings,
Jim Ewing

Grace in Autumn is aptly titled, because the tale of the townsfolk of Heavenly Dazy dips into grace under fire. While I have read the first three books in this series, this is the one that really made me think. When the island is inundated with mail sent to the Angels of Heavenly Daze the town is split in how to handle the requests. Most of the people want to ignore the mail, to not worry about the problems of others, as they all have their own...Babette is worried about finances and replacing a leaky roof, Olympia is worried about losing her beloved Edmund, Georgie is worried his parents are heading towards divorce, and Birdie is worried about Capt. Salt....and so finding a way to respond to the pleas of help are met with vairous responses. Birdie wants to send money to a family in need while others are so opposed to her plan in fear others will follow requesting handouts that can not be supplied. Meanwhile, the true angels of the island are working behind the scenes trying to aid their charges reach conclusions that meet everyones needs. This book removed my blinders regarding some of my own thoughts and choices. The simple but powerful statement "We are the Father's hands on earth" made me think. I too have budget issues, I struggle to make ends meet, but I can do things for others who may have lost or never had faith that God will provide for us. I may smile at someone who hasn't had someone acknowledge them in a long time, or somehow encourage someone who felt alone. And I can trust that God will provide for my needs. I needed this reminder and am glad in the gentle stories of Heavenly Daze, I'm assured that having faith is where my future lies...

I have a library with every book I can get my hands on related to grouse hunting. There are resources specifically on Ruffed Grouse, guns, gunfit, shooting techniques, and every other aspect of the sport. The grouse hunting guides tend to get a read once or twice and then stay on the shelf. Not so with Walrod's book. It is the one hunting guide I have found myself referencing repeatedly. He has great comparative statistics and charts for locating birds depending on the conditions. It is a very enjoyable read and an excellent resource for the dedicated grouse hunter

This book is loaded with information that will make you a better grouse hunter. The author truly understands this game bird and is able to take his insightful observations and perfectly convey them in this book. This book is sure to make you a better grouse hunter. The information on the grouse alone is worth the money and throw on top of that the information about guns, loads, dogs, and success rates of other hunters just makes this a must buy. I highly reccommend this book. I bought a few other books on grouse and this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

Even applies to those in Washington State

Being (apparently) the state advocate and completely tired of all the hunting books which cover only the eastern part of the United States, I found this guide to be a great book no matter where you live and hunt.

A great picture of a Ruffed Grouse taken from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington state shows that the authors detail of habitat and other tidbits of hunting information apply in each and every covey around the country. What weapons to use. The appropriate ammo. The right choke. Statistics, opinions, and hard facts. Did I mention the book covers habitat? Oh! I can't forget to mention the recipes! Think of "Fried Grouse with (Wild) Mushrooms" and if that doesn't make your mouth water then check your pulse (or just read all the other recipes - there's some good ones).

If you have grouse near you, this book will help you find them and hunt them successfully - no matter where you hunt.

I couldn't put it down...I received it as a gift from a friend and fellow consultant. You have nailed the challenge, precisely and relevantly. I have translated the book to apply it to my work, Healthcare (largely hospital) marketing...and while Revolution Health goes a long way towards all you recommend, we providers need to run, not walk, to keep pace. Transparency driven by third parties who take our data and compare it to others, coupled with a more knowledgable and demanding purchaser (aging boomers), followed by a growing number of wired new users (who's having babies and raising young families..)...the tools and ideas you generate are EXACTLY what we need to consider as we try to reach these key audiences.

Thanks for the exercise!!!!

This is really the textbook for marketing now.

This book was a good read. It did not set my world on fire because over the past year or so I've been reading quite a few marketing books on how to incorporate blogs, comment sites, and social networks into the marketing plan of a business plan. In a way, it's just another of the many books that are flooding the book market regarding Internet marketing.

The book is sweet, though. It's pretty to look at. It's well outlined and well written. And, oh, the pictures of the author I have spotted on her Amazon profile, LinkedIn profile, and her book's own Web site and blog indicate she is a knockout appearance-wise. The best parts of this book in my humble opinion are the real-world examples about how to open meaningful interactions with potential customers.

The book points out well that traditional marketing involved the following approach: static, publish, inform, link, sell, and control. And now the marketing or Internet marketing approach involves live, interact, engage, tag, socialize, and collaborate. The new approach seems to take much more time from the marketer's perspective than the old approach. But the new approach costs so much less than the old approach. And the new approach is proving to be so much more effective.

The target audience for this book supposedly is marketers, communications experts, CEOs, and business owners. I highly recommend each of these people get a copy of this book to either learn something about Internet marketing done the right way, or to reinformce what they already know (or think they know) about Internet marketing. 5 stars!

a delightful summer mystery for the young, and the young at heart

Patrick Doyle's "The Castle Tower Lighthouse" is a delightful summer mystery for young readers. Patrick Doyle presents the tale of Edgar Font's Hunt for a House to Haunt (making the full title of the book a real mouthful, but a fun one). The book is fun through and through, down to a puzzle at the end for the reader to solve on their own. It's cleverly illustrated, and its tale-within-a-tale is engaging.

Doyle uses the conceit that the story has been given to him by Edgar Font, as recorded by Edgar Font's two grandchildren, Audrey and Garrett. Edgar Font is a capricious adventurer, somehow past his prime yet ready to take on anything--including his two grandchildren, who are precocious but overall _unadventuresome_ children. Edgar's answer to that is to drive them into the waters of adventure by making them integral to his summer's quest.

Edgar introduces them to the world of ghosts, as he outlines their intended journey--while not dead yet (and it's hard to imagine such a formidable person "passing on"), he wants to find a singular place to live out his eternity. The grandchildren are appropriately skeptical to begin with, but by the end of the book they're reasonably well converted--all in the span of a day.

It's a quick read, much more fluid than "wandering around the house and picking up clues" might suggest. The characters are fleshed out, for the age range, and I expect we'll learn much more about them in further installments, as they learn more about themselves. We're not told where they'll adventure to next, but there's a photograph marked, "Exploring the site for Adventure Two" in the back, and an arrow showing that it's "just over yonder". (And a glimpse at Amazon tells us that Adventure Two takes us to The Fakersville Power Station; and that that will be available July 1st!)

I heartily recommend this for the young (it's marked ages 9 and up), and the young at heart.

A treasured collection for readers of all ages!

An enchanting story that introduces Garrett and Audrey to some pretty wondrous adventures that delivers a positive message to children everywhere. Garret and Audrey are brother and sister, and as they head to China to join their father they have no clue of the great adventure that lies ahead. The children usually stay with their aunt while their father is off on his trips as an architect but this year the children's aunt is asked to join their father for the summer in China. The children end up spending most of their time with Edgar Font, their grandfather. Edgar is on a quest of finding the perfect place to haunt when he passes away, and their summer adventures begin, their adventures will be remembered a lifetime. Their first adventure begins at an abandoned lighthouse which is full of puzzles, ghosts and mystery. As their adventure continues through the lighthouse they must rely on everything they know and the lessons that they have learned along the way to ensure they will make it out without being harmed.

The Castle Tower Lighthouse is a children's book that everyone will fall in love with no matter your age. The author writes with such skill that lights an imaginitative spark in the reader. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and the message the story delivers is of a positive one. This is sure to be a series you will want to keep and treasure for years to come. I intend to collect each in the series for my grandson to enjoy, which I am sure will ignite another book lover in our family. I cannot wait until Edgar Font's Hunt For a House To Haunt Adventure Two: The Fakersville Power Station comes out in July. I am ready to enjoy another great adventure with Edgar Font on his search for the perfect place to haunt.

If I told you this story began with an old man pointing the way to a secret door in a dream, what would you say? Yet, that is exactly how Patrick H.T. Doyle discovered the leatherbound journal in the attic of his home. Inside he read the most wonderful stories, each describing the adventures of a trusted grandpa and two adoring grandchildren, Audrey and Garrett. Through his imagination and incredible storytelling abilities, Doyle has delivered a new kind of adventure book, that is destined to be a favorite for young and old alike.

The last time the kids had seen grandpa was three years earlier, at their Mother's funeral. Garrett remembered his bushy moustache and that he lived in a tree house on an island somewhere. Audrey recalled the fantastic stories he had shared during their visits. How he explored pyramids in Egypt, surfed waves in Australia and climbed Mount Everest, twice. Yes, Grandpa was a true explorer. Now everyone referred to him as eccentric. Which of course to the kids simply meant he was weird. Now they would be spending the entire summer with him at his apartment in The Sterling Oaks Retirement Village. Translated into kids english - "boring, boring, and boring." But, they could not have been more wrong. This would be a summer they would never forget.

Sir Edgar Font has lived an exciting life and certainly intends to continue his quirky ways after he passes from this world into the next. So begins his search for the perfect house to haunt. The Retirement Village was filled with lonely, bored ghosts and that was no place for him. As grandpa explained his plans to his wide eyed grandchildren he was met with skeptisim and questions.
Later that night after having seen a ghost at the dinner table, they exited down the emergency steps and made their way to the "Adventure Wagon." This wagon will take us anywhere we want to go and our first destination will be the Lighthouse, grandpa told them.

The Castle Tower Lighthouse holds many puzzles, secrets, and mysteries, each waiting to be discovered. Beyond all the games there are life lessons being taught through out this book. Dealing with the loss of someone you love, like the death of Audrey and Garrett's Mother and learning to look beyond that which seems obvious, are only two of the many wonderfully woven stories that both entertain and teach. As a companion and beautifully complimenting the adventures within the book, the website offers many hours of fun and puzzle solving.

Patrick H.T. Doyle has delivered a truly new and refreshing alternative to the books currently available. This could easily be a review filled with all the raving adjectives, because each and every one has been earned. Excellent, engaging, suspense filled, action packed, I could list them all. However, it is far more important to point out that this is not just a children's book or for young adults. For all the parents out there who have searched for a great story to read to your children before bed, this is it! I have no doubt, children everywhere will be asking, "is it bed-time yet"? For all the children looking for an affordable book that is entertaining and fun, here it is! And lastly for all the adults who enjoy discovering a new author that has truly created something different, look no further, you have found it! And with the second book in this adventure series available in July, this is the perfect time to get introduced to Sir Edgar Font.

Happy Reading!

A fun approach to job search advice

Review Date: 2008-06-01
Job hunting is like dating: flirting with potential employers, making the best first impression you can, hoping to find a great match. This is the premise of Shawn Graham's book, "Courting Your Career: Match Yourself with the Perfect Job."

Shawn is associate director with the MBA career management center at UNC-Chapel Hill. He knows that job searching isn't always fun for students and young professionals, so he decided to use the dating metaphor to make the process more palatable. It works. Shawn's tone is friendly, knowledgeable and detailed, and the dating metaphor is clever (e.g., cover letters as pick-up lines).

My favorite part of the book is the sample scripts, where Shawn outlines exactly what to say in various situations, such as calling a networking contact or approaching a recruiter at a career fair. He also provides some tips I haven't seen elsewhere, such as a guide to the best places for men and women to buy interview suits (helpfully ranked by price).

Recommended for Gen Y job seekers looking for expert advice combined with a fun twist on the career search process.

Great for college seniors or recent grads!

My only regret with this book is that I got my hands on it merely weeks after I had already accepted a job! While I'm thrilled with my career choice, this guide could have saved me a lot of heart ache (no pun intended) during my job search. Shawn presents such an obvious and sensible idea that it's a wonder we all hadn't thought of it before. The text itself is an enjoyable read on top of being incredibly insightful- perfect for college students who are quite unwilling to read anything not absolutely necessary. Career changers could also benefit from the blatant honesty that Shawn's comparisons expose. Early in the book, Shawn relates "accepting any job that will pay the bills" to "settling for any date who has teeth." Yes, that made me laugh but also made me realize it's quite silly to settle for just any job if its going to require at least 40 to 50 hours of your week. Looking back, I also fell into the trap of "dating someone just because they lived down the street from me"...in other words, restricting my job search to one major city. In short, this is the first piece of career advice literature that I've enjoyed reading. Succinct and realistic, it is a must-have for anyone looking for their first job, a promotion or a career change.

Great advice, well-written and straightforward

As a recent MBA grad and an even more recent single guy, I found this book informative and entertaining on multiple fronts. I especially liked the author's philosophy on where to meet both networking contacts and potential mates - "everywhere but police stations and prisons." Funny, yes, but there's a sincere truth to that advice as well.

The word "networking" used to make me cringe, because I associated it with something artificial and forced. This book helped change the way I thought about networking - it made me realize that networking can be done anytime, anywhere. It doesn't have to be so different from what you do in other parts of your life. Who you know, and perhaps more importantly who knows you, is just as if not more important that what you know when it comes to opening doors.

In addition to its advice on networking, "Courting Your Career" provides a wealth of guidance regarding self-awareness, which is the foundation upon which any successful job search must be built. After all, if you don't know what you want it's very difficult to figure out how to pursue it.

I would recommend this book to those who are considering or are currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs of any kind, as well as anyone who is contemplating a career change. Mr. Graham's personable, approachable writing style makes this an easy and enjoyable read.

Great advise for the job seeker!

As an MBA student, I've had to quickly figure out how to find and land that perfect gig. Courting Your Career helped me get up to speed on how to best position myself to prospective companies while also covering everything I needed to know about interviewing. The dating metaphor helped drive the advice home and made a tedious process a lot more fun. I would definitely recommend this book.

Picked this one up used on the recommendation of a friend. Never heard of it, and can't find anything on the authro anywhere. But this novel is SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD. Someone needs to promote this thing. I don't know whose supposed to do that, I guess the author and the publisher both. Anyway, I'm hear to let everyone know it's a great fantasy read and deserves to be heralded through the known and unknown lands.

Taneypa rules!

If you are tired of either limp fantasy heroines or ones that are simply too militaristic or "anti-male", try on Taneypa for size. I propose we name a rock band after her! She's mean, profound, of otherworldly beauty, and carries an attitude that can kill or enslave a man's heart.

She is a "sweet-singer", which means that she can sing spells that effect other people and Nature as well. But she can also sing songs of "two meanings". These seem to convey one meaning, but in fact cause the opposite to happen. The entire book is punctuated (between chapters, chapter sections and other divisions)with her poems or songs. In my opinion, the author's portrayal of Taneypa lends a whole new dimension to the "elf woman" type found in modern literature.

A wonderfully magical, pathos-ridden book

August Hunt made me feel the wonder and horror of what a "real" fantasy world could be like. I rarely experience this level of joy and anxiety when reading. And there is a poetic sensibility one does not usually encounter. Was Mr. Hunt a poet in a previous life? I whole-heartedly recommend this book.
