The Anatomy of Narrative: Analyzing Fiction and Creative Nonfiction is an anthology of fiction (5 short stories) and creative nonfiction (5 essays) with an analysis following each piece wherein the narrative techniques are defined and the narrative form is identified. Modeling exercises also follow each piece. Between chapters of story/analysis, there are short breaks with ideas to recharge your creativity and some basic writer's advice about openings, closings, dialogue, verbs, dramatic moments, etc. There is also a writer's guide to basic grammar.

The stories include Sherman Alexie "What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona", Tim O'Brien "The Things They Carried," Abraham Rodriguez, Jr. "Roaches," Gary White "The Gravity Motel," and Tanya Pai "How We Lost Maria."

ANCIENT MEXICO:CULTURAL TRADITIONS IN THE LAND OF THE FEATHERED SERPENT provides a clear and concise description of cultural growth in Mexico and Central America in ancient times. Archaeological sites, early religious traditions and beliefs, mathmatical and calendrical accomplishments, and many other aspects of the ancient cultures are discussed. The book begins with the earliest migrations to the Western Hemisphere at least 25,000 years ago. The arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century, and a fascinating comparison of Spanish and Indian beliefs and personalities completes this informative and well-written book.

My 4 year old loves this book. The books greatly detailed map of the whole ant village and associated greater detailed rooms in the village provide hours of treasure hunting. Make sure you read it with ample lighting or you will strain your eyes. Will look for more by Philpot.

This book is a little dry but I have to give props to the authors. Dale McGinnis, who unfortunately died of cancer a number of years ago, was one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. He was extremely smart and talented and his native american upbringing (adopted into the Crow) provided a unique insider perspective into american indian culture. Linda Kimball is a professor at Western Washington University, my alumni. Because of these great authors I give this book 5 stars.

The strength, and the hypocrisy, of these salt-of-the-earth men and women shines through the poverty and devastation of their daily life.

This book is very technical, but it is a fantastic book for identifying insects. Probably the best.
