This book is full of lots of activities to help children learn to read and write. The activities are practical and easy to do with limited materials. A good choice for teachers to recommend to parents of younger students, this book would also be helpful to those who need activities to use at day care or in a tutoring situation.

Slippery deck!

Review Date: 2008-06-21
This is a wonderful, mystical deck. I almost did not buy it because other reviews warned "this is not a beginners deck" and that it did not line up with traditional decks. However the deck kept calling out to me so I purchased it off Amazon. I am a beginner and I find this deck teaches me and leads me to greater understandings.

I would have to agree that this is not a "beginners deck" because it is the most slippery, tricky, insightful deck I have come across. It has a very definite personality. Where other Tarot decks will give you accurate, pedantic readings. This deck, for me anyway, gives deeply incisive readings full of sassy and sometimes humorous insight.

If you want just the facts get another deck. If you enjoy a deck with personality and are not put off that it has a mind of it's own (very stubborn! - it keeps saying what it wants when it wants!) then this deck is wonderful. It will show you deeply (too deep for most people as it shows stuff you don't want to confront or admit even to yourself!). But beware - this deck is sassy!!!

The artwork is absolutely gorgeous. It does not try to follow tradition, but I find they speak wonderfully to my intuition. The only real break is with arcane 15 which is renamed "chains" but I personally like this change and find it consistent with the readings.

One final warning: those that want to keep their belief in the lie of the material universe walk away and do not purchase this deck. As Friedrich Nietzsche so eloquently says: "When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you."

Lovely Tarot Featuring the Art of Lisa Hunt

"It is possible to re-learn the ancient art of communication with fantastic creatures. When approached in the proper ways, these powers can help us. By tapping into these astral sources, we can use the ancient images in divination to gain a clearer picture of what is causing life problems and what we can do about it." - From the Little White Book

From the Lady of the Lake to the Kraken, Griffin to Jenny Greenteeth, the Fantastical Creatures Tarot brims with a dizzying array of gods, goddesses, mythological creatures and the stuff of legends.

Featuring the luminous artwork of Lisa Hunt, each card of the Major and Minor Arcana is dedicated to a specific being (or group of creatures). You'll find dragons, a unicorn, faeries, a werewolf, a vampire, selkies, valkyries, gnomes, brownies, firedrakes and lion-dogs. Pegasus makes an appearance, as does a centaur, faun, minotaur, mermaids, harpies, The Djinn, firebird and The Sphinx.

Titania, the "mistress of glamour and matriarch of magick" finds representation in the Fantastical Creatures Tarot, as does Oberon, Gilgamesh, Kali Ma, Tiamat, Yemaya, Lilith, Quetzalcoatl, Circe and the triple-goddess Morrigan.

The cards retain traditional titles rather than the creature depicted, although Trump XV is cleverly re-named "Chains" in this deck. Minor suits are Wands, Cups, Pentacles and Swords and although Wands are associated with Air and Swords with Fire in this deck, the association isn't obvious by illustration alone.

As always, Ms. Hunt's stunning art shimmers with light and color, enlivening the fanciful world of creatures that are sometimes awe-inspiring and other times frightening, yet remain a ready menagerie of aid for those bold and trusting enough to call upon their energies for magick or insight.

The glossy cards measure approximately 4 ¾ x 2 ½ inches and have a simple circular filigreed motif centered on an ecru background, making the backings fully reversible.

Unfortunately, this lovely deck isn't accompanied by a full-length book--only a 71-page Little White Book by D.J. Conway. Several times, the LWB description doesn't seem to jive with card image. For example, the creatures in the 2 of Pentacles are described as Fey who are "human-sized, wingless members of the Fairy Kingdom". However, the Fey in the card clearly have wings.

Although the brief mythology of each card is adequate, some of the interpretations seem a bit repetitive, as well as the descriptive elements of some of the images.

In addition, some of the choices of fantastical creatures seem ill suited to their particular cards and meanings. For example, the 3 of Pentacles represents mischievous hobgoblins that "like nothing better than to spoil luck, create nightmares, hide things and frighten people". Yet, the divinatory meaning given is "opportunities will soon come from you to learn new skills".

Two quick reference cards come with the Fantastical Creatures Tarot, providing keywords for both Arcanas. A large, two-sided illustrated fold-out with five spreads is also included in this kit. However, the keywords for the suits don't seem right on the fold-out. For example, the Air/Mental realm is said to be made up of "thoughts, ideas, communications, emotions, relationships and love." The first three, yes--but the last three? That's the realm of Cups/Water/Emotions.

If you love Lisa Hunt's artwork, particularly the Animals Divine Tarot, you'll want to get your hands on this lovely deck. Those inspired by mythology and otherworldly creatures will also likely enjoy the Fantastical Creatures Tarot. (I also think fans Paul Mason, particularly the Fairy Ring, would also like this deck--especially since Jenny Greenteeth and others found therein).

However, this isn't a good deck for beginners, especially with some of the confusing and contradictory elements found in the LWB and fold-out.

That line from Quentin Tarantino is just one of dozens of insightful quotes which Ron Newcomer highlights throughout his detailed and authoritative book. Actually, that word "authoritative" is deceptive because Newcomer's writing style is laced with humor as he deftly takes the reader through the entire filmmaking process, from script to screen. His section on storyboarding--a necessity in today's time-is-money film industry--is particularly illuminating. For those of you in a film school, or planning to be, this book is an invaluable resource, a welcome departure from the unimaginative text books currently used in such classes. And for those of you, like Mr. Tarantino, who simply love the movies, this is a delightful, revealing insight into how those movies are made.

Film Production: The Creative Process is a great book that educates the different areas of film production. It talks about everything from forming a production company to creating a script to screen. The book has many useful tools and information that keep me going back to the book over and over again as a film student. This book is very informative and the information is presented clearly. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the process of film making. For film students, this book is a smart purchase. You will keep on going back to this book for reference throughout your film making career.

I wasn't sure about this book at first when it was given to me. I thought that it might be a romance novel and I'm not fond of them except when it involves history. I couldn't put it down! It wasn't a mushy romance novel! The book kept me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next. I guess that you CAN'T judge a book by it's cover. I hope that Kara continues to write more. The book was given to me by the author's sister-in-law (and it was autographed) who lives next door to me. I can't wait to meet her!

I really enjoyed this book. I started it late one night and couldn't put it down until 6am! It is a compelling story that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the sweet ending. I could not help but love the characters and feel concerned for them. The author had a way of putting me in the story. I also appreciate the concept of having a clean romance novel to read. It had nothing inappropriate, and it wasn't cheesy either. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Easy Basics for Essay Writing
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-24
A synopsis by the author: Formulas for Composition explains the elements needed to write an effective academic essay in easy-to-understand terms. Chapters in the book take readers through basic essay structure, argumentative/persuasive essays, research papers, and literary analysis essays. The book's innovation lies in the math-style formulas that describe each type of essay. The formulas can be used by readers as devices to help them remember what needs to be in a well-structured essay. Furthermore, for those people who love math but say they are "no good at writing," the formulas provide an explanation of essay writing in a way they can more easily understand. Then, on the back cover, where authors usually write a boring blurb about how great their books are, readers will find "Twenty Easy Ways to Fail a Course," a tongue-in-cheek look at what students should avoid doing in order to pass their writing class. The book is new, but I have used these formulas successfully for years in my teaching.

The Forsyte Saga: The Man of Property

No man's property
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-25
Once upon a time, not so long ago, wives were practically considered the property of their husbands.

But this antiquated idea is only one that John Galsworthy quietly slashed apart in the first book of the Forsyte Saga, "the Man of Property." With his intricate plot and lush old-style writing, Galsworthy introduces us to a snobby upper-middle-class family who begins to disintegrate in the changing times.

The vast Forsyte family has come together to celebrate June Forsyte's engagement to a young bohemian architect, Philip Bosinney -- except for June's father, who eloped with the governess and is now shunned by his family.

Among the guests are the stuffy, domineering Soames Forsyte and his quiet, unhappy wife Irene -- though she conditionally agreed to marry him, she doesn't love him. But Soames regards Irene as his most valuable piece of property, so he decides to get her away from London. At the same time, the patriarch Jolyon starts to kick off family disapproval, and goes to see his estranged son.

Soames contracts Bosinney to design a country house, hoping that his work will appeal to Irene's "artistic" sensibilities. And it does -- too much. An attraction starts to flower between Bosinney and Irene, leading to a furtive affair and the promise of yet more scandal. And Soames' determination to "own" Irene leads to tragedy...

Written in 1906, "The Man of Property" was written in a time before the world of England's upper crust changed forever -- sort of an English "Age of Innocence." And while Galsworthy's first Forsyte book can be sees as the portrait of a disintegrating marriage, it can also be seen as the portrait of the Forsytes overall -- stuffy, gilded, and extremely eager to forget the working class roots a few generations back.

Galsworthy paints this time in a flurry of lush, dignified prose , filled with slightly mocking notes about the Forsyte family, and tiny gestures and expressions that convey more than actual dialogue could ("Huddled in her grey fur against the sofa cushions, she had a strange resemblance to a captive owl"). Yet there are touching moments too, like Old Jolyon paying a visit to his estranged son and his lower-class second wife, and the grandchildren he has never met. The awkwardness, love and pain in these scenes is truly astounding.

As for the main characters of this drama, the little love rectangle is handled delicately. No soap opera dramatics -- just a married woman in love with her best pal's fiance, and who is raped by her angry husband. Galsworthy was a staunch advocate of women's rights, so you can guess how he treats this contemptible act.

Ironically, the "man of property" is the one whose head we get into the most, and Galsworthy allows Soames' own narrow thoughts to speak for him. Irene is all vague seductive elusiveness, as she is to Soames, but there are a robust supporting cast, including the spirited June, the kindly aging Old Jolyon, the fussy aunts, and the artistic rebel Young Jolyon.

"The Man of Property" causes his own marriage's downfall, in the beautifully crafted tale of a family that never changes, in a time when change was about to strike. Definitely a must-read.

Truly a classic -- time-tested, and well worn

First book in The Forsyte Saga, the first trilogy about Galsworthy's family, the Forsytes. I have always known that this is a classic; i can remember Mum & Dad watching "The Forsyte Saga" on BBC, when i was under ten. I've thought about reading it at various times since then, when i 've seen parts of the Sage in various libraries, but have never taken the plunge. What a fool i was. This book is wonderful. It is not fast-paced; there is not a lot of action; there aren't thrills and spill for the average modern reader raised on television and motion pictures. What it does have, however, is a delicately portrayed family of characters, nice (in the older sense) irony, gentle interplay between people, and a carefully told story of the disintegration of an engagement, and the loss of a marriage. Very definitely written about the late Victorian Age (it takes place in 1884), some of the people's attitudes are radically (literally, other-rooted) different from the prevailing views of the Western world today. Soames' musings about marriage, the duty of his wife, and his exercise of his rights with her, would not stand today; fascinating they are, though, as a view into our great grandparents' world. Roll on the next two books of the trilogy.
