This book took the typical behaviors of ADHD kids, broke them down, and made separate and specific recommendations. They are very realistic and applicable in the general classroom. I recommend it for general ed. and special ed. teachers alike.

I found this book to be to the point. As a teacher and a mother of a child with ADHD, I found excellent ideas to try with my child and at school. I liked to brevity of this book. I did not have to read pages to obtain some simple, but fantastic ideas to use with our ADHD kids.

I first read this book in my American Constitutional Law course in college, and I must say it was a very interesting book to read. The authors did an excellent job of displaying the text material in a clear, concise and easy-to-read format. The book takes you from the early ideological theory of constitutionalism and its history, to an in-depth analysis of the subsequent amendments that affect our individual rights and our government institutions. This book is great for the novice student learning American Constitutional Law, and perfect for anyone who is interested in constitutional government.

I absolutely loved this planner. It was perfect for every day life, and fit into my bag very well. It's definately the best in the way of planners. I just wish I could find the one for '99!

I had never heard of Anne Geddes before. My sister was nice enough to send me a 1999 Calendar of babes. Every one in the office, including my self loves her work. Some had even thought about collecting. One concern. We would had like to see more babes of color (different nationalities). But all of the babies are so beautiful, you can't help but appreciate this ART. (Just a suggestion)

"The art of field sketching is the art of learning to observe and draw nature quickly without worrying about the result." - Clare Walker Leslie (from the preface of the book.)

I bought this book years ago, and it has never ceased to inspire and instruct. Clare's easy, accessible language and great illustrations cover all aspects of drawing from nature: equipment & tools, techniques, clear examples, simple tips and high-resolution results.

What's wonderful about this book is that the author makes sketching so accessible! There's no pretense about being "creative" or "an artist"...she gets that the process is more important than the product. Field sketching is about understanding the outdoors and observing things closely...not about creating beautiful drawings.

If you have *ever* thought to yourself "I wish I could draw" or "I would sketch if I only had the time," or if you're a professional or practiced artist that wants a good reminder of the benefits of field sketching, this book is for you.

This book will inspire you to get you out of the house, sketchbook & pencil in hand, to observe and capture the moments of nature, and in the process, you'll "learn about a world that often goes otherwise unnoticed." (from the preface.)

I checked out this title from a library when I was in my teens. It was the introduction to journaling for me. I took down the name, returned the book when it was due, and I was glad that I did: it took me this long to find a in-print copy of it...and soft cover to boot!

Life in the Democratic Republic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-11
Gaillard Hunt served in the Department of State and the Library of Congress. He edited James Madison's papers, wrote a life of Madison, a biography of John C. Calhoun, and other volumes on political and social history. This book was originally sponsored to advocate an Anglo-American alliance in 1914 by creating a pleasant view of history (p.xiii). It offers informative accounts of everyday American life and popular culture lacking in conventional histories. America was a collection of rural places where farming and small-scale commerce were the economy. Hunt's outlook was that of a "social Darwinist", and Larkin does not say why such a book could be written today. [Perhaps J. Anthony Lukas' "Big Trouble" can provide a look a life a century ago?] The 'Preface' tells the purpose of Hunt's book (p.xix).

Chapter III reminds us of the political geography of that era. Chapter IV describes the composition of the population. The North and the West were growing. New York alone had tenant farmers. Early Americans were reputed to have a love of money (Chapter V). The egalitarianism and frugality of Northerners is contrasted to the aristocratic planters of the South (Chapter VI). Chapter VIII tells of travel by coach and sloop; no canals or railroads. Chapter X explains why women were not prominent in early American political life. Since there was no permanent governing class, women could not ascend to power! Divorce was almost unknown. Most people feared the theater as a dangerous excitement to the imagination that produced immoral conduct; prostitutes attended to attract attention. Actors often had a bad reputation. Fiddle playing was popular, frontiersmen believed it frightened off wolves (Chapter XI).

Chapter XII tells about life for the "Common People". Men worked 12 to 15 hours a day, six days a week, for 70 cents. Women and children could be whipped at work. Strikers were beaten down, and the leaders jailed. Some cities regulated work and pay. The apprentice system prevailed in the trades. Chapter XIV describes religion in those times; morality came from religion. The churches declined after the Revolution, but "The Great Revival" changed that. Colleges were created to train the ministry. Medical schools were started (most students apprenticed to a physician). Chapter XV describes the early schools. Education was regarded as a luxury for the rich! Children were taught manners as well as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Noah Webster's Speller sought to create a national language. Chapter XVIII tells of the campaigns against drinking and gambling.

Observance of the Sabbath was strict: no labor, shopping, entertainment, travel, or lounging. Pennsylvania innovated with confining prisoners alone in 1790. When New York followed this example they found prisoners went mad when kept in isolation (Chapter XIX). Chapter XX tells how "the poor and sick" were treated. Poverty resulted from being a wage-earner. Asylums for orphans and the elderly were started. Early America had an abundance of food (Chapter XXII). Hunt says eating "hot bread" was unhealthy. There was no class exploitation (Chapter XXIII). Little capital was needed for farming. The very rich were in shipping. Southern planters were the main exploiting class. Chapter XXIV tells of the religious groups who lived a communistic mode of life. They only lasted a few generations. Everyone believed in representative government (Chapter XXV). State legislatures, elected by the voters, chose governors and the electoral college. There was no powerful moneyed class to fool voters with false promises. Hunt discusses nullification as a way to object to an oppressive and unconstitutional law. The openness of the House made it superior to the Senate. A happy country has a dull history.

Early Americans feared that the President would develop into a king (Chapter XXVI). Today's rulers were their nightmare! [Until the 20th century we had a "well-regulated militia" and a tiny standing army to prevent this.] Hunt explains why James Madison was a great statesman. Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford created a term of office for government officials, allowing changes and to build a political machine. This had far-reaching effects to this day. Patriotism then sought symbols unique to our country, like the bald eagle (Chapter XXVII). The President had powers that were defined, not unlimited. American nationality is derived from the land, not from a tribe. [You don't have to be a descendant of the 'Mayflower' to be an American.] Hunt ends by noting the changes in communication, transportation, and education since 1815. Patriotism came to mean devotion to the United States, not just to one state.

A clear window into the past.

Written at the beginning of the Great War at the behest of certain influential Anglophiles, Hunt's work was intended to celebrate one hundred years of peace between America and Britain, and, perhaps, to dispose Americans to the British side of the developing cataclysm.
Whatever the intent, the result is a valuable window into life in the new Republic, discussing matters of State and politics, but focusing on social conditions and the matters of everyday life among the ordinary (and, of course, largely rural) people. Travel, education, food, medicine, and amusements are just some of the subjects touched upon in this very useful and readable work, and the author has the happy gift of incorporating necessary numerical information in a most painless way.
Hunt's clear-eyed evaluations of the social institutions of the day, particularly slavery, may grate on modern sensibilities, but the work is valuable overall in its view of life in an era little known to most Americans.

Outstanding pipe reference book - plus great reading. This book finally answers many of the questions I have long had about my Falcon collection. And it gives an insider's view of pipe manufacturing back in the pipe heyday of the 50's - 70's. A GREAT addition to my pipe reference library!

Excellent! Great Historical Profile and Terrific Story-Telling!

I bought the book based on Bill Unger's recommendation - and Bill's word, as usual, is good as gold. I learned a lot here about Falcons specifically (their manufacture, nomenclatures, product lines, etc.) and about the pipe industry in general (difficulties in obtaining briar, etc.)- and I was very surprised to learn that both B. Barling & Sons and Kapp-Petersen made briar bowls for Falcon for a time. I found 'Back From The Ashes' not only a very interesting and well-written book on pipes...but also a wonderful tribute to an obviously great man - George L. Hunt of Diversey Machine Works of Chicago, one of those great American entrepreneurs who pulled himself up from his small-town (Southern Illinois) bootstraps to become a successful and prolific manufacturer. I enjoyed learning about the man behind the pipes - his great sense of humor and fun-loving ways - and his love of hunting and fishing, etc. I give it 5-stars and heartily suggest that all smoking pipe enthusiasts add this great book to their collections.

A succinct and thoughtful book on the essence of flamenco

I feel that this book was succinct and thoughtful in regards to the essence of flamenco. I love the fact that the book was written by a flamenco artist who truly understands the beauty of this amazing art form. It also vindicates everything that my flamenco teacher has been telling me over the past 2 1/2 years. I feel that Teodoro Morca captured in words what it means to be flamenco and what it means to live flamenco. His sensitivity, compassion and vulnerability to the art form makes flamenco more accessible to those that may not truly know what flamenco is. I have read books on flamenco by D.E. Pohren, and although his books go in depth as to the history of flamenco, and into the various artists, he does not have the warmth that Teodoro Morca has because Teo has been immersed in the flamenco life for over 40 years. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book. I will never tire of reading it over and over.
