Hughes writes an exciting autobiography about his career as a U.S. Forest Service smokejumper and wild land fire fighter.
Never before has there been a book written like this. Hughes also writes about his childhood under the influential teachings
of his grandfather to his college days at Washington State University. He also adds some not so discreet views of his affairs
with many women while growing up, and working as a smokejumper.

As a student of sociology, I found the text to be definitive and an excellent resource during my studies. The text offers
a clear analyasis that is very readable and user friendly to the less initiated in the ranks. A very good companion for Giddens
in the study of classical sociological ideology.

"Vertical Bill", a true caving legend
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Review Date: 2008-06-17
This book is the biography of William F. Cuddington, who was born in 1933 in North Carolina. Bill is an absolute "Living
Legend" in the community of cave explorers and is still an active caver today at age 75. He is literally every vertical caver's
hero.
Bill first began caving in high school in Virginia in an area where caves are common. Caving was still in it's infancy in those days and there was no specialized equipment designed just for cave exploration. As Bill began to explore caves around his home, it became apparent that techniques for descending deep, vertical drops in caves were crude and ineffective. Over the next 20 years (1948-1968) Bill and a small group of friends developed new, safe techniques for descending these deep vertical drops and invented new equipment that is still consider state-of-the-art today.
This book is a very detailed account of both Bill's cave explorations and the development of these techniques. The book is accompanied by numerous photographs of Bill and others exploring caves throughout this entire time period, and up to the present day. Perhaps the culmination of Bill's work comes with the discovery and exploration of a pit over 1,000 feet deep in the mountains of Mexico in 1967. Bill was, of course, on the first exploration of this pit, named Sotano de las Golondrinas.
These techniques developed by Bill and his friends are generally known as "Single-Rope Techniques" and are widely used today by rescue teams, rock climbers, and even window washers on skyscrapers. They are not only used here in the United States, but around the entire world.
This book is not a "How-To" book. You cannot learn these techniques from reading this book. But, you will learn about the fascinating life of one of the most incredible cave explorers that has ever lived.
If you like exploration, outdoor adventure, and a history of the development of a truly unique sport, caving, then you will enjoy this well-written and well-researched book by David W. Hughes.

I owned this book many years ago. I leant the book years ago and have missed it since. It is
a wryly concocted compendium of much in life that is paradoxical in math, art, literature, music, movies and the world around
us. Reading this book is like chasing your tail with the desired hope of never catching it. If you catch your tail, you might
as well throw the book away! It is tough to classify this one on the bookstore shelf:art, mathematics, logic or humor. They
all fit the bill. One of the great, mind opening, fun books to cherish and share. I guess this means I have to buy a new one

Gentle cadence to the words, depth in both context and artwork, articulate authenticity of childhood memories given weight
of some better understanding through hindsight.
This book is a treasure to share with our children of all ethnicities, to begin dialogues with them which will nourish them and their fellows and their children and so forth through gardens and offices and libraries and schools and temples and homes.

This book is great! I used it as a student teacher and it helped me a lot. It tells about how several different cultures
celebrate the harvest. It also gives projects to do with children to let them see what children in other parts of the country
do. For the Chinese celebration, it gives the directs to make a moon bunny and frog which is part of the harvest celebration
in China. If you are thinking about getting this book...DO!

This booklet is intended for those who have just completed a Cursillo weekend. That experience has probably left you a little
confused and maybe even anxious as to just what happened to you. This feeling is normal for someone who has had a profound
spiritual experience.
You have experienced a 3 Day Cursillo and it had led you into what we call the Fourth Day, which is the rest of your life. If you have a greater or new awareness of God's love in your life; if you have experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, surely you will want that to continue and grow. The Cursillo Movement offers you a method to perservere in that growth, and this booklet will give you a simple explanation of that method. It will also give you some idea of what the Cursillo Movement is, where it came from, how it functions. Hopefully, it will answer any questionns you might have at this stage in your life.
We have only one interest in asking you to read "Our Fourth Day"; that is, to help you grow in the life and love of the Lord and fufill your call to be a saint and an apostle for Him.

examples of patterns that imitate them, this is it. It's small enough to fit in a good sized pocket in my fishing vest too!

Author Mike Aspey's career in forestry has spanned nearly fifty years: he's seen many changes both politically and in management,
and the rise and fall of forestry management issues in Canada. As such, WHAT'S ALL THIS GOT TO DO WITH THE PRICE OF 2X4S?
provides an insider's account of the environmental struggle, based on his lifetime as a Deputy Minister of Forests in British
Columbia and his involvement in other councils and coalitions on habitat management. First-person insights include observation
of village habits and management's impact on human and wildlife as well.
