This novelization of the film moves at a brisk pace and does not disappoint.
Several details are found here which I do not remember learning in the film. Example: The cloaked man and woman at the beginning of the film who return Mircalla to the land of the living are actually her parents. (It's been years for me, maybe it was there but I just didn't remember it.)
The ending is a bit more dramatic too.
If you can find a copy of this book and you like these sort of tales, I recommend it.
It is one of those rare finds which, once you start it, it's hard to put it down.

A wonderful, uplifting collection

As a pagan, I picked up Maiden, Matron, and Crone to see how these thirteen authors dealt with the manifestations of the triple goddess. I was not dissapointed. I love Martin Greenberg's anthologies, and absolutely love several of the authors in this collection including Tanya Huff, Jody Lyn Nye, Rosemary Edgehill, and Fiona Patton. So, I had high expectations for this anthology.

I am pleased to announce that this book passed with flying colors. As a fantasy author, I loved the varied settings, from original fantasy worlds to modern day urban fantasy, and the myriad of incarnations the goddess took in these stories. Each story felt real and whole, a complete world in and of itself.

As a pagan woman who believes in the goddess, I found these stories to be uplifting, spiritual reading. I found my faith renewed, my belief in the many faces of the goddess reaffirmed, and am promptly recommending this anthology to all of my pagan friends.

Whether you love good, female-centric fantasy, or seek to read more about the goddess, or simply want entertaining reading, this anthology will not dissapoint.

"Ever since his brother John became Prime Minister in 1990 Terry Major-Ball has been pestered by journalists wanting to know about his family. How did his father, born and brought up in America, come to be a circus clown, a trapeze artist, a variety show actor, and finally a manufacturer of garden gnomes? How did the family cope with father too old to work and mother looking after him, when they lived in two rooms in Brixton while John was still at school?

Eleven years older than John, Terry played a crucial role in keeping the business and the family together at a difficult time. He knows what they went through as no one else does, and he understands the effect this had on John's career and on his own. Whenever he has been asked about his family by newspapers he has found they have taken his remarks out of context to suit the mood of a hostile press.

So he resolved to write his own story, and here it is -- candid, funny, sad, eccentric, honest, always compassionate and unfailingly affectionate. It is never grey."

Wonderfully imaginative, this book was read by me again and again about 20 years ago. I recently looked it up and discovered it was written by the same author as "Bogwoppit" - these were the two books that stood out in my mind for all these years. The story is of a community on a mountain side and, of course, the main character saves the day! Beautifully written and in my hard back version - which I still have in England - beautiful illustrations.

Interesting historical theology

Review Date: 2008-03-23
A book by Thomas Hughes, a historian and theologian, about the masculinity of Jesus. It is an argument against the "feminization" and pacifist view of Jesus, in art and theology, and argues for a more masculine understanding of Jesus and his message.

This may be of interest to the theologian, historian, student, pastor, group leader... especially in light of the recent "Wild at Heart" movement.

An interesting old book. It gets lots of attention on my bookshelf - due to its age, it's unique binding, and the unusual topic. I'm still not sure what I think of it, but it provides an interesting perspective.

Even though the "Master of" computer games - Orion, Orion II and Magic - are no longer published, they are constantly on the classics list of many players. This book is as thorough and well produced as any guide you'll ever find, and a perfect complement to an excellent game. Very detailed and explanatory. When the games fade from your hard drive (years from now), this book will still be on your shelf as an example of "how it *should* be done."

Not sure why this recent book showed up so low on the list of his books. Its an excellent summary of mayflies, and contains a good distillation of the main must-have flies, with tying instructions. The book describes a system for being ready for anything without carrying everything. It is the usual thing: narrowing the flies you carry with careful lifecycle, size, and colour choices. I have been seriously fly fishing for 25 years, and still found lots to consider about his approach.

I really only have one quibble about the book (and his others for that mater), and that is that Hughes is not a particularly gifted tier. This is not a good book upon which to base your style. If there is a series of flies in different colours, they sometimes all look different in form also. He never seems to get the same result twice. When tiers have a strong stylistic vision, it speaks to how they see the effectiveness, aesthetics, and structure of a fly, so you just learn more from viewing weel made flies. This limitation would most affect a how to tie flies book, which this isn't. But there are enough patterns that it will doubtless serve that role for some. On the plus side, it is obvious that Hughes must catch trout on these patterns, so one needn't feel intimidated by one's own efforts should they be rough also.

Hughes is a hugely prolific writer, and I have several of his books, and don't find them particularly repetitive. But common sense should dictate caution if you have a number of his titles that may cover the same material. An extensive article/extract of this book was carried in one of the fly mags, so you may feel deja vu there also, though I found the book more useful.

The splendour of the Maya
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-27
This beautiful book contains 41 full-colour paintings of Maya buildings (many now in danger) to demonstrate the Classic and Post-Classic periods of this civilization. There are also lots of minor drawings scattered throughout the text.

The text consists of an introduction, thirty essays on various aspects of the government, religion, economy and culture of the ancient Mayas, and an epilogue.

The map of the region covered includes Mexico's Yucatan and Chiapas provinces, Guatemala and Belize. The sites covered include Copan, Palenque, Topoxte, Tikal, Chicanna, Becan, Uxmal, Tulum and Chichen Itza.

Maya Monuments is a major achievement of art, archaeology and history, vividly bringing this ancient culture to life again. It concludes with a selected bibliography and index.
