Most of us cannot imagine what our lives would be like without our significant other. I know I can't. When Jason Hill died he left his wife Sabrina behind to mourn him. And though she mourned him everyday and looked for him in every face of the crowd, she decided to move on with her life and try to live again with a man she thought might make her at least half as happy. Steven was a good man. Jason has come back from Heaven to let Sabrina know that the man she is engaged to is not the man for her. That he knows the person who would make her happy and he wants to see them together. Torn by dismay, shock and longing for Jason she is stunned when his choice is pointed out to her. The struggle of trying to be with this new person and still loving and seeing Jason is a wrenching experience for Sabrina. This book was amazing to read. I have never felt such emotion when reading a book and it is amazing to me that this was only published for the month of July in 1994. I am thoroughly glad that I have my copy and can recommend it. I think that any reader looking for a good romance would be happy finding this book in the used bin at a tag sale or bookstore. Keep your eye open. ISBN: 0-373-16542-0

Make Way for the Fat Fury!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-12

Herbie is a parody of a superhero -- fat, emotionless, addicted to lollipops -- but with amazing powers derived from his lollipops -- flies (but by walking on air), travels back in time (in a grandfather clock), talks to animals (who all know him), indestructible, and on an on. His speech lacks pronouns and articles, but his catchphrase is "You want I should bop you with this here lollipop?" Although famous throughout history, Herbie's powers are not known by his parents. Herbie's father, Pincus Popnecker, is an ambitious but unsuccessful businessman who is dismayed by his lot of having a "little fat nothing" of a son. A recurring theme in Herbie comics is how Herbie helps his father overcome one bad business venture after another, always without the knowledge of his parents. There are many recurring sight gags and phrases.

Important advice to new readers: Instead of starting the Herbie Archives with the first story on page 11, I suggest that new readers should start with "Herbie and the Sneddiger's Salad Oil" on page 45 and read forward from there. You can return to the formative stories later.

Publication Notes: The Dark Horse volume features cover art where Herbie appears, as well as some ads that ran in Herbie and other ACG comics (such as Forbidden Worlds, Unknown Worlds, and Adventures Into the Unknown). The pages appear to be cleaned up scans of the original comics, replicating the colors used. The pages are about the size of the original comics. There is an article at the front and biographies at the back by Scott Shaw, all worthwhile, but unfortunately printed black on red and produce maximum eye strain.

You can go on ebay, & find the original comics reprinted in this book,& pay at least 1,000 in collectable shape,or you can buy this book,on good white paper, with bright coloring, for less then 1/20 of that price! And make no mistake,if you want quality top notch gut busting humer, then nothing can beat the adventures of herbie, the fat fury!Created way back in 1958, and lasting untill early 1967, this character has an EXTREAMLY loyal, devoted fan following!Nothing like herbie had never seen print, before or since! This is a collection, that has LONG been desired by herbie fans, the beginning of the complete reprinting of herbie,in color. At best, only about 3 issues worth of stories have seen color reprinting, over the past 42 years. In itself, I predect this book will one day, be a much sought after collection. It's a product of a bygone era, when America was'nt a tenth as uptight. Only the 1950's could have given birth to such a character, with such outragous stories.IF your hung up on political correctness, then this isn't the book for you, because Herbie was'nt. IF your hung up on realism, this is'nt for you either. this,is a character and book,on a level with jack Cole's plastic man. I have EVERY single original apperence,& I still had to have a copy of this book!

This the first book I turn to when I need information of the design of the 5.56NATO/.223 Remington round as used in the AR/M series of rifles. Hughes did an astounding job of collecting specimens of the various loadings and samples from a wide variety of manufacturers. The color plates are splendid. It is a somewhat dry read but quite full of information; it's definately geared more toward the detail inclined than the weekend Airsofter. It's a must have for serious students of the platform but unfortunately it's become rather scarce. If you find a copy make sure to snatch it up, it was not widely printed and the prices are already outrageous.

History and Development of the M16 rifle and Its Cartridge

For any student of modern small arms, and the M16 rifle in particular, this book is utterly indispensable. The author is a USAF veteran that was involved with the M16 from its early days of testing by the air force. This book is a very detailed technical work dealing with the tortured development of the M16, and especially its ammunition. There are an unbelievable amount of detailed official technical drawings of many of the various .223 rounds developed, both by the US and other countries. In fact, the book even includes eight pages of color full-size photographes of the literally hundreds of known variants of the .223, including all the various types of special cartridges such as blanks, dummies, etc. used throughout the world. Of special interest are all the various modifications to the rifle and its ammunition that were developed and experimented with, but never adopted. Although dealing with many technical subjects, the book is written in a style that makes it very easy to understand, and draws the reader right into it. No matter what you think you know about the world of military small arms development, this book is guaranteed to reveal something you didn't know. It's a story that deserves being told and recorded, and Mr. Hughes has done an excellent job at it.

The book I am reading is Home Alone 3: A Novelization by Todd Strasser. I think this story should get five stars. It is a good book because it is about a little boy called Alex who is at home alone by himself. His parents have to leave him alone for one whole hour. The bad guys break in and Alex does pranks on them. Then his parents come home and the bad guys leave. The next day criminals come back. In the end Alex calls the cops and they go to jail.

The last word on Hughes in Vegas
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-15
More than four dozens books about Howard Hughes have been published since the 1960s. It would seem that there's little more we can learn about his life. Why, then, should you bother to read another book about Hughes? Because, in addition to being well-written and entertaining, it's the most exact summary of his documented life to date, and because it also has some thoughtful theories on mysteries that still swirl around the erstwhile aviator.

Schumacher's book is a hybrid. In some regards, it's a synthesis of the plethora of previous Hughes works. Schumacher combed through what must have been an endless array of news clippings and tomes of Hughesiana. But he also availed himself of rare and unique primary sources at UNLV Special Collections, the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, and the treasure troves of private collectors. His thoroughness definitely shows. I doubt there's much about Hughes-particularly his four Las Vegas years-that Schumacher doesn't touch on.

The book starts with a quick summary of Hughes B.V. (before Vegas), then discusses his lesser-known earlier stays in Las Vegas, including his 1943 Lake Mead crash and his purchase of the "Green House," which is still intact on the land of KLAS-TV, in 1953. Then he brings in the story of Hughes' right hand, Bob Maheu. Maheu's story has been well-documented, but seems to gain something by being placed in the context of Hughes.

Here's where business really starts to pick up. As the Hughes roller coaster inches higher up the initial slope, Schumacher stops to describe "what Vegas saw" with a quick chronological survey of contemporary media coverage the Hughes Las Vegas years (1966-1970). The he dives into the real substance of the book-detailed chapters on Hughes in Vegas. These run the gamut from profiles of significant figures such as Hank Greenspun, Paul Winn, and John Meier, to discussions of key topics: the Clifford Irving hoax biography, the Palace Coup that brought Maheu down, and the sometimes-outlandish fight over the estate in the face of competing Hughes wills, none of which was proved authentic. Melvin Dummar's tragicomic tale-more tragedy than comedy, it now seems-gets ample space, and probably its best analysis yet.

Schumacher then jumps tracks, switching from biographer to critic with a section called "Hughesiana" that features a mix of non-Vegas profiles (Jane Russell, Rupert Hughes, and the RKO fiasco) and extended takes on "Weird Tales" (obscure Hughes texts) and "the Fictional Hughes," which is an up-to-date consideration of the reams of paper and reels celluloid fantasy that Hughes has inspired.

The book's key strength is Schumacher's attention to detail and thoughtful use of his sources. Without an axe to grind, he is able to write a dispassionate book about the eccentric billionaire, a decided rarity. One of the mavens quoted on the back cover commented that few Hughes books are "as lucid as this one." I think that is an astute judgment by an extremely insightful critic. Since Hughes was far from balanced, he invites wild speculation and still, more than thirty years after his death, an almost messianic fervior. Schumacher immersed himself in his sources without becoming captured by them-a hard task, indeed, where Hughes in concerned.

If you enjoy books about Las Vegas, I'd say that there is room in your library for this book. Unless you are a Hughes-obsessed maniac, I guarantee that you'll learn something new from it, and you'll probably find, as I did, that Schumacher is able to make some intelligent guesses that make sense of some of the enigma surrounding Hughes-the Mormon will saga, in particular. Barring the discovery of authentic new documents or revelatory confessions from heretofore silent associates, this book will likely be the last word on Hughes in Vegas.

You must read this novel! It is a literary jewel. It grabs your heart and your mind. The triumphal ending makes all the struggles seem worthwhile. Not only will the story keep you turning pages to find out what happens next, but it is so well-written. The imagery is stunning. The factually based tale is embellished by the author's extraordinary grasp of the language. This is no romance novel, as the title suggests, it is more like free-flowing poetry. A soulful insightful read. Highly recommended!

Projecting an Infatuation

I walked with the protagonist Georgine, everywhere she went. She lives the kind of dream that women would follow if we could. Passionately, with a double edged "tough" tenderness and the inevitable hurts that knock us out of our dreamlike consciousness.

She counter punches with determination.

This story touches on turning mistakes into achievements, in redefining ourselves. In believing and fighting the doubts, especially in the diaphanous state of being in love.

An American living in Paris..living her dreams..despite doubts from family, she forges ahead to move out of the shadows of her "executive-ly" successful sister to make her own way.

I could've been this young woman, had not my dreams been deferred. There is a lot of French and some Italian phrases, and it serves to include the reader on the journey.

It's a book to read, after days of crunching numbers, making a sales pitch, running a household..a quick escape, it has a nice fast flow and pace. I recommend it for all romantics, even die hards, who no longer believe...

The first attempt to list endangered species of invertebrates on a world wide scale and to relate them to their role in nature and their usefulness to man is now available as the latest in the IUCN Red Data Book series on threatened wildlife.

There are 1.4 million known species of invertebrates - animals without a backbone - compared to 46000 species of vertebrate mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. There may be two to ten million more as yet undescribed, living in the ocean depths or in tropical forests. Their potential value to man may never be discovered, according to the authors, because they are disappearing rapidly as a result of pollution, razing of forests and the encroachment of man on their habitats.

Invertebrates are major components of food chains, they are of primary importance in the cycling of nutrients and they play a significant role in the maintenance of soil structure and fertility, as the IUCN authors point out. They pollinate plants, exert a natural control on pests, are used in the development of drugs and create products as diverse as silk, dyes, honey and buttons.

An innovation in this volume of the continuing Red Data Book series is a section on threatened communities. Eleven examples are given of tropical forests, caves, wetlands, dry biomes, marine environments and areas with unusual diversity of species. They illustrate situations where human activities may endanger large and unique invertebrate populations.

This first biography of John Grisham reads like a mystery. It describes the mystique of Mississippi and gives historic tidbits of each town where Grisham grew up to whet the reader's appetite. For hopeful writers, it tells how Grisham evolved as a writer. A good, quick, informative read!

Narayan of Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE JOHN GRISHAM STORY as a biography of his writing life. There are no family trees, no attempt to trace out genealogy or any of the frills & hoopla commonly associated with biographies. What we find inside is a simple tale, narrated in simple words, about the life & times of one of the most widely read & popular authors of the present times.

Through the words of many of his friends, teachers & close-relatives we find out the real man behind the stunning works of THE FIRM & A TIME TO KILL, etc. It mainly focuses on three aspects of Grisham's life: the first of a lawyer & a politician; the second that of a writer extraordinaire, the king of legal thrillers, & the third about Grisham's dream of becoming a baseball star.

Two out of three's good going!

Do catch our interview with Libby Hughes.

This book brings back the memories of this wonderful amusement park. Sixty years ago PPG in Creighton, Pa. would have a train especially for their annual picnic at Kennywood. From the towns along the Allegheny River picked up the employees to spend a wonderful day at the park. The train stopped and it was a long walk up a steep hill to enter Kennywood. What a worthwhile climb! Happiness was spending a full day there. PPG gave out prizes at drawings for their employees at a designated area.
Many different ethnic groups had their day at Kennywood. There were great picnic areas. The grounds were always clean. The landscaping crew had flowers everywhere. Buy Rick Sebak's DVD on Kennywood.
It was great seeing all of the recorded (photographs) and narration on a part of personal memories at a wonderful setting that many of us will never forget and cherish forever.

This was a very interesting book, especially for one that went to Kennywood while growing up - school picnincs, family visits, band trips for Fall Fantasy parades, dates, etc. to see the history of Kennywood.

I would recommend this book to anybody that grew up in the 'burgh & went to Kennywood.
