For players and storytellers of Promethean: The Created, White Wolf's most underrated World of Darkness series, Strange Alchemies is a must-have if you want or need new Bestowments and Transmutations, a deeper look at the Lineages and Refinements, plus essays from various developers on things from Human Experience (Living and doing things as a human) to discovering the world around them for the Player Characters. Considering that Promethean was a limited series of only five books (The core book and four supplements), Strange Alchemies should definitely round out your P:tC collection.

Powerful, but who plays this game?

These Promethean books are well written and very mature. They seem to be the darkest books in the World of Darkness. While I greatly enjoyed reading them, I have to wonder who is playing this game? You can make a real powerhouse character, one that few if any of the other supernatural beings could take down, but the downsides of being so hated and having such a miserable existence seems to out weight any benefit. The opening story is about one of the "beautiful" Prometheans who wants love so much from the object of her affection, kissing and hitting are the same thing to her. I can't imagine role-playing that out with my friends. This is certainly not a game for children and even some adults will find it too intense. But if you like it the main Promethean book, give Strange Alchemies a try.

This books is one of the best books of its kind, and easy to read for guys...filled with funny stories, lots of ideas and Scripture. Having read it through, I'm currently using it in a parenting class I teach on Sunday morning. It's a must read for every parent who desires to raise faithful children.

The author interviewed 30 families, where the parents were successful both in business AND family. He shares the common principles that helped the families to be successful in faith and morality, but not at the expense of their careers. Some of the fathers were executives in fortune 500 companies; the rest in similarly successful positions, but all maintained being servant-leaders in their homes. That's what makes this book a must read for every parent.

Other books that I would recommend are "What Every Family Needs" (by Drs. Paul Faulkner and Carl Breechen), The New Strong-Will Child (by Dr. James Dobson) and The New Dare to Discipline (also by Dr. James Dobson)--really anything by Dobson.

Every parent should read this book!

What an inspiring book! Raising children in today's society is such a challange and this book gave me so much hope that I can raise my children in a positive and loving atmosphere. The chapter on The Role of the Mother and The Role of the Father just took my breath away. I now realize the importance of family traditions and my children love them. This is a book I will read over and over again and recommend to everyone. Don't miss this one if you have children or are even thinking of becoming a parent.

Had this booklet in 1974 when i was a troubled teen. 25yrs later, it makes even MORE sense! In roughly 30pages, the author explains how and why your problems all stem from YOU. he also explains how to view life more realistically so you can better enjoy it! Simple stuff with loads of logic to back it up. The principles and techniques are practical for everyday use yet based on complex psychological theory. a MUST read for EVERYONE!

The most delightful and effective self-help booklet ever published!!!

Howard Young was one of the most extraordinary and talented psychotherapists who ever practiced. This booklet, which has sold over 125,000 copies worldwide, superbly presents for the reader the same empathetic understanding and insight that Howard invariably conveyed to live audiences and private therapy clients. There is more relevant, practical, and helpful information in this booklet than you'll typically find in a 500-page psychology textbook, which bores you to death and doesn't even help you in the end.

This booklet is, at the same time, both simple to understand (even for children) and deeply profound. It is absolutely delightful to read! There is no way to read this booklet without feeling MUCH happier than before you began.

Howard presents the basics of Rational-Emotive-Behavior Therapy (REBT) as developed by Dr. Albert Ellis. Howard explains how our interpretations of external circumstances -- rather than the circumstances themselves -- cause us to feel upset. He further explains how altering these irrational interpretations leads to dramatic improvement in a person's emotional well-being -- improvement in overcoming depression, anxiety, feelings of rejection, and a host of other common emotional afflictions. The artwork and graphics within the text are also highly valuable aids used skillfully by Howard to teach the fundamentals of emotional disturbance and effective recovery.

If you're a counselor or psychotherapist, you will definitely want to incorporate this wonderful booklet into the literature you provide your clients. Even if you're that rare person who has no emotional hang-ups whatever, you'll nonetheless enjoy this booklet purely for its wit, humor, and rich entertainment value.

Howard Young passed away in 1983 at the age of 47. He died the way he lived: rationally. He truly practiced what he preached in this priceless volume. Even though he is gone, he continues to help many thousands of people each year through this exceptional booklet. You will be very satisfied and happy that you purchased "Rational Counseling Primer."

I read this book in one sitting, snowed in at the Boston Greyhound station. It's a tribute to Schwartz's clean writing and thorough knowledge of Jewish folklore that I remember that night as one of my best. Schwartz traces how Biblical imagery and themes have been expressed through Jewish folklore, religious writings, and literature, and leaves the reader with an appreciation for the spiritual content of children's stories. As a folklore enthusiast, I've also found that this book has provided a better context for understanding the wonderful stories collected in Schwartz's many other collections of stories.

the true dimensions of how our society works. Sometimes
seeing the truth in our society is like the fish saying

Bravo.

Deb Howard speaks from a profound and personally insightful perspective on the consequences of power, privilege and social injustice. Her uniqueness is the ability to expose the wounds, that all of humanity suffers from, the often, yet, not so obvious expressions of our intolerances and transgressions. In doing so, she offers to us a new vision of equality and a remedy for healing our deteriorating existence together. Like a skilled artisan, she masterfully weaves together the torn and frayed remnants of a fragmented multicultural society. Though forgiveness and understanding she exhibits to us the beauty and benefits we have to gain in being whole.

This is an extremely well written book. It was my introduction to William Howard Russell and I found it interesting and informing. The book can also serve as a primary for the introduction of the attitudes and feeling of the beginning of the Civil War. Russell was probably the father of war reporting at least the kind of reporting that took us through Viet Nam.

This book was outstanding. Especially towards the end when the chase for murderer was in act. Your books are my favorite ever. I own two of them already. Thank you for coming to our class that day. My mystery story is on a roll because of your idea's of how to make them better. I made sure that I used an amature detective because that is what I know most about. The pizza party was great, and I'm glad that we got to ask you all of those questions about your carerr and the books. Thanks again!

The Matty Trescott Novels are the best group/novels of books I have ever read. I already own 3 of them. Thank you again, Mrs. Shmurak, for coming into our class to talk about your novels you have written. I am glad that I got to ask you all of my questions about your career and the books. Thanks again for coming in. So, if you like suspense and cliff-hangers, you will truly enjoy this book from the beginning to the end!

The Riot at Bucksnort and Other Western Tales
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-09
I think this collection of REH westerns is some of his best work. The hero of most of the stories,Breckinridge Elkins,is,to quote Howard, "of the Pecos Bill style". The stories go beyond comedy, into slapstick tall tales. Elkins absorbs more lead, cuts, and bashing in one brawl than ten ordinary men, usually before he leaves home. His horse Cap'n Kidd is the only thing on two or four legs thats a match for him and the story "Meet Cap'n Kidd",is one of the best in the book. The character in the next three stories, Pike Bearfield is not quite as outrageous as Elkins, and the stories a bit more realistic, but Howards use of dialect and humor is still very entertaining. The story "The Riot at Bucksnort" is written as a series of newspaper articles, letters and telegrams, and is indeed a riot.In the last three stories,Buckner J. Grimes,is yet more realistic and the stories not as funny,in fact "A Man Eating Jeapord" is a good straight foward western with some humor thrown in. If you like Howard, humor, westerns, or just good entertainment I think you will enjoy this.

Western Insanity, Howard Style

Review Date: 2006-06-13
Robert E Howard's Western heroes create hilarious chaos wherever they go, from devastation at a crooked Election Day to the insanity produced by a young giant of a man going into a civilized town for the first time in his life. And darned near leveling the whole community. By accident.

Each & every story reads like the Saturday Night Live crew playing the Man With No Name.

Fine Westerns, don't get me wrong. But lots of laughs, too.

Robert E Howard is most famous for his "Conan The Barbarian" creation.

But this collection of Western tales proves his talent wasn't limited to that.

One Of The Influential Books In American History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-14
When asked to list the influential books in American history, I don't know how many scholars would name this one. Written by a newspaper man, not a scholar, this was a popular history not a scholarly tome. I don't know how many of its points would be considered valid now, or how it holds up as a work of history. And surely, most people today haven't even heard of it. However in its day, the mid to late 30s, it had a huge impact on public sentiment in this country as Europe drifted to war.

It was a throughly revisionist history. It made no bones about its main thesis: that the participation of the U.S. in the First World War was a mistake; that we were dragged into the war through the foolish, wishy-washy policies of the Wilson administration, which spoke neutrality but which favored the British, and whose hypocrisies involved us in the war as a semi-belligerent in the days before April 1917, and led us into direct confrontation, then actual war with the German Empire.

(As an example of the cynical hypocrises of the supposedly idealistic Wilson & his gang, the U.S. was never called an "ally" of Britain or France. Knowing of the public's traditional suspicion of "entangling alliances", Wilson insisted that we were an "associated" power, not an "ally"--as if this made any difference.)

In the heady days following our victory in the war, we as a nation were proud of our part in the war, thinking we had helped usher in a new millenium of a world without war. Today, it is mistakenly thought that WWI was thought of and called "The War To End All Wars". Actually, in the day, it was called "The War To End War", which is quite a different thing all together. It was thought of as a great crusade to end the scourge of war forever. Such ideas did not last very long--not even long enough to get us in the League of Nations two years later.

As time passed, we began to see it as mere, though violent, power politics, a fight between the British and German Empires for hegemony over the continent of Europe, and thus overall world power. The U.S. rejected the league of nations (wisely, I believe) and drifted back into its traditional isolationism because we saw (correctly) that we had been sold a bill of goods in 1917, that we had been "taken" and misused by old, worn-out and cynical European powers, and that, indeed, 120,000 or so of our boys had, cruel as it may be to say it, died for nothing; or, rather died to enable Stalin to take over Russia and Hitler to take over Germany.

These became the prevailing opinions during the 20s and 30s. Even Roosevelt, whatever the real thoughts in his venal brain, was forced to mouth these opinions, in such important speeches as his Chatauqua address of 1936. Millis didn't create these feelings, but in this book, which became a huge bestseller, synthesized them in exciting and punchy newspaper prose, spiced with appropriate skepticism and sarcasm.

When one surveys the popular press of the late 30s and early 40s, one sees this book constantly referred to. Its arguments became the common language of such isolationists as Father Coughlin, Gerald Nye, Colonel Lindbergh and Burton Wheeler. They were held by the large majority of the American people right up to the day of Pearl Harbor.

Again, I don't know how this book holds up today as history. Maybe modern scholars would find fault with its researches and analyses. But its influence in its time makes it absolutely essential reading for anyone trying to understand American public opinion as we tried to keep out of another "European" war.

America's march to war

Review Date: 2005-09-26
Walter Millis worked mainly as a newspaperman for the New York Herald Tribune, and wrote books about current affairs, especially world conflicts. In this book he looks at the United States from the time war was declared in Europe in 1914 up until the time the US got involved in the fighting herself. He doesn't much like what he sees.

Although America declared neutrality at the beginning of hostilities in Europe, she was actually supporting the side of the Entente (England, France, Italy) from the start. Thus, while most of the country didn't want America in the war and President Wilson had promised to keep the country out of it, because the country had from the beginning "chosen one side over the other," she was inextricably drawn in. Subsequent events - submarine warfare, the sinking of the Lusitania, the Mexican fiasco, the principles of "watchful waiting" and "preparedness for peace" - only fanned the already well-burning fire. Millis is particularly opposed to the war-mongers such as Theodore Roosevelt, whom he characterizes as extremely irresponsible.

Anyone who wants to get a thorough account of what America was experiencing with regard to the Great War up to 1917 will do well with this book. Just be warned that Millis takes a very anti-war stand, and his astonishment at the hypocrisy of the country's actions as it was led into the horrendous conflict, is head-shakingly obvious.
