I first read this book back in the early 60's when I was stationed in Montana. I found it full of facts that you don't find in history books. The characters are real and believable; makes you wish you had a time machine to go back and witness the action. A must for history buffs.
This is THE book on Montana.

If you want to know the story of Montana, this is where you start. It's written by the best journalist-writer who ever lived in the state (excluding Bud Guthrie, of course, who chose fiction instead). It must be understood that it is not a "definitive history" as Howard himself stated, but a personal narrative of what matters. In the past two decades, a cottage industry of Howard-bashing has emerged in Montana, by historians eager to establish their own reputations. Yes, some of what Howard wrote was incorrect. Other aspects of his writings now seem outmoded (the colonial economy thing). But to say modern history proves Joe Howard was wrong is like saying Lewis and Clark are disproven by Rand-McNally. Howard was the visionary who showed the way to what Montana should and could be. But 50 years later, this remains the best non-fiction book that will ever be written about Montana.

I found Dr. Penrose's book to be essential to my learning and understanding of Motor Circuit Analysis (MCA). I am an industrial electrician and certified infrared thermographer breaking into the field of MCA.
Reading this book I was able to understand and use the AllTest MCA testers to accurately test motors and diagnose motor health.
Reading the book provided me with a foundational understanding prior to taking a class provided by Dr. Penrose's company SUCCESS by DESIGN. The book gave me quite a jump ahead in the class towards my understanding of MCA.

This book is a clear, concise and easy to understand text on troubleshooting motor and transformer windings, rotors and implementing reliability and energy programs. Dr. Penrose has an uncanny knack for making the most widely misunderstood concepts easy to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone who teaches releated classes or is responsible for the predictive maintainance program of any type of electrical motor. This book effectivly reduced the down time of my production line by about 75% through introducing me to a much more effecient method for doing motor testing.

Whether you personally like Howard Dean or not is beside the point: he has moved the Democratic Party light years into the future. If you're a Democrat, you should understand that history in order to honor it. If you're a Republican, you should understand that history in order to surpass it. And if you're a Nader supporter, have I got a bone to pick with you . . .

This is an excellent book, and will be interesting to anyone who cares about political organizing and democratic power. It is a very unusual political memoir, written by people who participated at all levels of the campaign, each of whom speaks from his or her own point of view. The authors offer frank, searching assessments of the campaign's many successes and failures. They also tell wonderfully compelling stories drawn from both the heights and depths of the movement.

Film Noir, Serials, Jungle Pictures, Detectives, Comedies -- They're All Here!

Although the accent is on film noir in this book, many other mystery-suspense categories are covered as well. Jungle movies, for instance. Although Edgar Wallace is chiefly remembered for his crime thrillers, he also wrote straight suspense novels of which "Sanders of the River" was undoubtedly the most popular. The film version of "Sanders" is included in this book, as its spoof re-make, "Old Bones of the River". (For some odd reason, the cast list of "Sanders" is not included at the beginning of the entry -- as is the case with every other film in the book. You have to work it out from the details in the review. Aside from this one innovation, every film in the book is detailed with full cast and camera credits that are easy to see). Other jungle movies featured include the complete "Bomba" series, plus "Queen of the Amazons" (a "B" movie starring the lovely Patricia Morison -- but not in the title role), "Uncivilized" (starring Dennis Hoey as a sort of singing Tarzan), "Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island" (a fast-paced cut-down of a Republic serial), "The Lost Tribe" (a Jungle Jim entry), "Booloo" and "Jungle Girl" (the most entertaining serial of all time, in my opinion). Other serials include "King of the Rocket Men", the 1943 "Batman", "Chick Carter, Detective", "Manhunt of Mystery Island", "Panther Girl of the Congo", "Daredevils of the Red Circle", "Holt of the Secret Service", "Government Agents vs Phantom Legion", "The Clutching Hand", "The Phantom Creeps", "The Spider Returns" and Mascot's ambitious 1932 "Last of the Mohicans".

Once again John H Reid and his fellow critics analyze films from the "Golden Age of Hollywood" and Britain. An awesome task! The films have to be grouped under certain criteria. For example, BOMBA THE JUNGLE BOY is included because the films could fit that criteria of mystery and suspense. Some titles might have you scratching your head because of their inclusion-yet Mr Reid and crew pull it off. The reviews are habit forming

My kids LOVE the Mr. Putter books and we must have read this one 50 times since we got it a few weeks ago! It's a nice hardback edition and seems durable. The paper book jacket is pretty useless when you've got little ones constantly taking it off, but that doesn't really matter, I guess. I highly reccommend this series!

Mr. Putter and his delightful cat Tabby enjoy lazy days filled with cozy teatimes and yummy biscuits and muffins. But, when his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry calls and tells him about a prize at the upcoming senior marathon, he must make a decision to start a workout program to get into shape. Because the prize is a very special train set that has lights and switches and tunnels, Mr. Putter will do almost anything to win.
He is surprised that the train set is second prize but figures Mrs. Teaberry will surely win the golf clubs that are offered as first prize. He doesn't care about winning the race. He just wants that wonderful train set.
First he gets into shape by searching for his sneakers and trying to touch his toes and having plenty of tea and biscuits with Tabby. Then they sit at the dining room window and watch Mrs. Teaberry's dog Zeke run with his jump rope in his mouth. Zeke is very excited about the race, too. On race day Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke wear matching outfits, and Mrs. Teaberry is ready to win first prize. She wants those golf clubs.
Mr. Putter is surprised at how many old people have turned out for the race. When the horn sounds Mrs. Teaberry is way out front and Mr. Putter is at the very end.
Then something very exciting happens! Zeke gets tired of watching and decides to run with all of the seniors in the race. But this one little decision causes a lot of trouble. Zeke was still dragging the jump rope. People started tripping and bumping into one another, and worst of all, Mr. Putter grabbed the end of the jump rope. Zeke is pulling him so fast that he became the fastest runner in the race-and everyone started cheering. It is an exciting ending. But who wins the amazing train set?
You must read the book to find out. After that you will be pleased to know that award-winning author Cynthia Rylant has written over 60 books for children of all ages and has a series dedicated to the loveable Mr. Putter and Tabby.
Armchair Interviews says: Another wonderful book from this children's book author.

What an extraordinary book about John William Smith's life. Each chapter is a story taken from his childhood, or as a father or a husband -- but most of all as a Christian man. He tells the good, the bad, the sad and many humorous stories that you'll want to share with your friends immediately or read to a loved one. A very special book -- important lessons that emphasize ways to build character by consistant dicipline and unconditional love -- for ourselves and our children.
The book was very moving. I laughed, cried and learned.

My husband tells me I am one to enlarge a story, If I like something it's not a simple, I liked it. It is usually, I really really loved it....it was soooooo good. In the case of the book entitled, "My Mother Played the Piano.....it was the best book I've ever read.....I really really loved it....it was sooooo good! Not many books can touch your heart and make you a different person when you are finished but this book can and it did. Being a story teller myself it validated what I always tell my children...that every bad situation makes a great story later. I would love to personally e-mail the author to tell him what his book meant to me. I believe this is the closest I'm going to get. This is a book that anyone would enjoy.....but mainly parents. It should be mandatory for every parent to read before having children. Thank you Mr Smith for writing about your memories and allowing us all to be apart of your childhood. Debbie Jones Yakima, WA

This book, rather than being as serious as the first two in this series, is a funny basic story; girl falls for teacher, girl's older sister comes to visit, girl's older sister and teacher go on a date, girl is jealous. However, it works out well, meanwhile being a funny story, a break from the more serious other books in this great series.

I discovered Howard Pease earlier this year. I have read three of his books, and just bought three more (used). "Heart of Danger" hooked me; I want to read and own them all.
Pease's novels are well-constructed, with intriguing plots, exciting action, and memorable characters. Like the best authors, he wrote about what he knew. Pease recreated the world of tramp steamers and black gangs with intricate detail - you can feel the heat of the furnace, the wind-whipped spray against your face, etc.
Amazon lists just two Pease titles - he wrote 22, and none are in print. I think Pease's books merit reprinting - not just for his growing legion of fans, but for the many other readers of all ages who would find them fascinating.
Read the reviews and testimonials of how Pease positively affected readers' lives. This man's work deserves to be in print again.

Howard Pease's Publisher's biography: "Howard Pease always had two great interests- writing and the sea - and in his adventure stories for teen-agers, Mr. Pease has been able to combine the two successfully. Born in Stockton, California, in 1894, Howard Pease says that his interests in books developed from his parents reading aloud every evening before bedtime. His interest in writing came from a sixth grade teacher who set aside an hour every week for creative writing. After high school, Howard Pease worked from two years and then entered Stanford University. World War I interrupted his studies, but he returned to Stanford after two years where he remained for graduate study in teacher training and story writing. His firsthand knowledge of the sea, which is used in most of his books, came from shipping out of San Francisco on freighters during and after his student days. he lived kin the black gang's forecastle and worked below deck, first as a wiper, later as a fireman. When he wrote THE TATTOOED MAN in 1926, the story of a young man (Tod Moran) who shipped out of San Francisco, Mr. Pease put his own adventures into the story form for all adventure-loving teen-agers. In the following years Howard Pease taught school for ten years, wrote numerous books (18 of which are currently in print) and taught creative writing to adults. Mr. Pease now (as of 1963) lives in Livermore, California. Two of Howard Pease's books have won awards: THUNDERBOLT HOUSE won a silver medal from the Commonwealth Club of California and HEART OF DANGER received both the 1946 award of the Child Study Association and a medal from the Boy's Clubs of America. Books by Howard Pease: Tod Moran Mysteries THE TATTOOED MAN, THE JINX SHIP, SHANGHAI PASSAGE, THE SHIP WITHOUT A CREW , HURRICANE WEATHER, FOGHORNS , THE BLACK TANKER , NIGHT BOAT AND OTHER TOD MORAN MYSTERIES, HEART OF DANGER, CAPTAIN OF THE "ARABY", MYSTERY ON TELEGRAPH HILL
His other books: THUNDERBOLT HOUSE, SECRET CARGO, THE LONG WHARF, BOUND FOR "SINGAPORE" , JUNGLE RIVER , THE DARK ADVENTURE , SHIPWRECK.
The publisher was Doubleday & Company.

I love this book!It should be titled "Care Plans Made Easy". It lists all of the NANDA approved nursing diagnoses and what defines them. Right along with the diagnoses, multiple desired outcomes (NOC) are listed along with definitions. Next to each outcome are the interventions (NIC) that you should/could implement to achieve the desired outcome. These range from major, suggested, and optional. This book really helped cut back on the time I spent writing out care plans for my patients because the information was so centralized into one location. Worth every penny!
