When Celine visited Russia in 1936 he was horrified by the "great utopia", in Mea Culpa, Celine unleashes his fury against mankind. It's a great chance to see Celine in his political best. His thesis is also included. There is a bit of literary quality about it also, like he was just inventing his style.

I am the author of the book, so please excuse the 5 stars. The purpose of this note is to let anyone who is interested know that I have a web site, morpheus.hartford.edu/~goldick. On the site I maintain a list of errors and re-writes for the book. They are listed by date and by page. I hope that this is useful to all who are using the book.

I would very much appreciate comments about the book from any reader and also notification of errors.

There is an instructor's manual available from the publisher.

Great School, Great Book
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-08
I attended the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine longer ago than I care to recall, but I am personally familiar with many of the doctors and incidents depicted in this well-researched and interestingly written book. It contains more facts per page than anything I have ever read (with the possible exception of the Yellow Pages), but that's the way it should be in a history that documents the key years of an institution that changed from a small medical outpost on the prairie to--as the authors brand Oklahoma taxpayers' expectations--a "Harvard on the plains" medical complex. While the school perhaps never achieved that level of academic excellence, it certainly rose far higher than the Oklahoma state legislature and it's turf-protecting politicians had any right to expect, given their meager level of support both financial and political. Politics aside, the 50's and 60's were great times to be living in Oklahoma City, and this book brings back many of my fondest memories--and reminds me of the many brilliant and industrious men and women I met and worked with at the Medical Center. The book captures it all beautifully, and I highly recommend it for anybody interested in the subject.

A "Must Read" for Med Students, Educators, History Buffs

I found the book to be extremely interesting, and even humorous at times. The book offers a play by play event listing of the establishment of the medical school and tells a candid story of the founders and individuals that were ultimately responsible for what kind of medical facilities, Oklahoma has today. A "must-read" for Medical Students, Educators and generally any History Buff that would enjoy the "inside" story behind the Oklahoma Medical Center. The photographs are a plus.

Although I take exception with labeling bachelors under 45 as "pre-married", is objectively well researched and written work. Despite the religious not-so-right and others' condemnation of increased singles and divorce, most would agree that remaining single has always been the appropriate lifestyle for many people.

People & Places Framed in Tumultous Times of Change

Review Date: 2006-12-24
There are those who form the catalysts in our lives, who lead in such a way
that they influence history. John Wilson was a keen observer of people who were genuine leaders and fairly portrayed their strengths and weaknesses.
As both an Indiana reporter, and a key player in the Justice Department, he
saw six decades of pivotal history in civil rights, Supreme Court rulings,
and tragic scandals. He reported at a time when reporters and office holders used tact and diplomacy before greedy scoops. His summations give credit to those who aided him through the years, instilling a sense of gentlemanly conduct. He longs for the days to return when both sides of a question are fairly debated. I could not put this book down and read it straight through.

Disclaimer: I was born and reared in Indianapolis and represented it in the U.S. House for 30 years. So naturally I savor this book about the people and places I know well. However, the book goes beyond the borders of my state, both because the author had two careers in Washington,D.C. and because the book is a beautiful ride in a time machine to palpable American history, styles, customs, attitudes, governmental policies and, yes, a fair amount of nievate about such things as tobbaco and slick sales scams.

A deeply humane book about the most human of music
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-11
This is one of the most perceptive, thought provoking and humane books I have ever read about the music I love. The section on Ornette Coleman was particularly rewarding and articulated the relationship between Ornette's verbal and musical language in a way that gave me new insights into his harmolodic theory as a means of thinking about life and human existence as much as (maybe more than) a way of thinking about sound and music. Ornette's music encapsulates everything that it is to be human, and Howard Mandel's book elucidated these connections in a most intellectually elegant way. (And the sections on Miles and Cecil are highly enlightening too, of course.)

An Excellent Overview and Study

Mr Mandel has accomplished the hardy task of reviewing, organizing, and analysing the progressive jazz world--its accomplishments, or not--of the past 50 years. Highly readable and quite well written. Never overly dense nor overly technical, it provides an access to a better understanding of this music. There's a nice balance between the author's study, interviews, and anecdotes. Each and every jazz fan will discover certain recording gems that he or she has overlooked. A must for the progressive jazz aficionado.

Mainstream jazzers--that may be baffled by this music--may find in this book the needed keys to open new doors.

An Aging Classic

The Whole Earth Catalog was an revolution when it was first published around 1970. This latest book, now out nearly 5 years, continues the tradition but I wonder if it represents the last of its kind due to the explosion of new knowledge is the past decade and the rise of the Internet as a source of general and specific information on any topic imaginable. The fact that no one else has reviewed it on Amazon as I write this seems to indicate the shift of interest from this excellent resource to other more immediate or specific sources of information.

But in the final analysis, I think everyone should have and use the WEC as it represents and contains the seeds of this information explosion and, though the references it contains may become dated, the ideas, inspiration and permanence it provides are valuable in this day of instant changes.

Perhaps the point of such books is simply to inspire us to change. When I first read the Whole Earth Catalog, and The Whole Earth Epilog (?)I was looking for something.

Thirty years later I am on a different path, leading who knows where.

It wasn't the information in those books that changed me.It was the message that change was possible, and highly probable.

That message I read between the lines, not from the sentences.

I was lucky enough to find this book at a library sale. It's cover was a little worn, but everything inside is perfect. It's looks directly into the heart of Moe Howard and how he dealt with the fame of the most successful comedy act of the 20th Century. If you are a Stooge fan, please try to find this book. It is a must for anyone who wants to know the intimate truth of Howard, Fine and Howard.

Moe Howard's Masterpiece of Stooge History

This is by far the best book written about the Three Stooges, becuase it was written by one of them! On these pages you will learn about the real people, not just their screen persona. I bought this book probably 20 years ago, and still look through it even now.

Moe Howard's intelligence comes through clearly. It is evident here that not only was he the "brains" of the outfit, but the most levelheaded of them. He is quite an articulate person, as seen in his writing and foresight. He caring for his dear brother Jerome "Curley" Howard is touching and part of Stooge history I was not aware of until I read this book.

It is a well-written, entertaining bit of history about our favorite knuckleheads! This book is a must buy -- and you'll enjoy it even if you are not particularly a Three Stooges fan. But you might be after you do!

this book is a must-have and must-read for ANYONE who's a fan of THE 3 STOOGES! It tell's their story from the very beggining, with the focus on Moe, up until his death, written in his own words.

this is definately the book for you if you want to learn more about the stooges. how better than to read a book by moe himself. this is a great book as moe tells you all about his life from start to end, altough moe died before he could finish the book himself, so it comes to a somewhat abrupt ending. there are lots of different funny anecdotes about what him and the stooges got up to, and also saddening parts such as when curly had his stroke. the book also contains many photographs, at least one on every page, some of them rare unseen before photos. the only disadvantage i could think of with this book is that it is told from a biased point of view by moe, and that might produce a few inaccuracies, but apart from that an excellent and interesting book. i read it all at once because i couldn't put it down! i'd recommend this to anyone wanting to learn the truth about the lives of moe, and the history of the greatest comedy trio of all time. enjoy!
