Introduction to a little recognized religious group
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-31
This book collects most of the written material available and includes actual person-to-person contact to document the Primitive Baptist Universalist church in Central Appalachia. Well-researched and well-written, this book describes a religious group that is remarkable for its openness and extreme forgiveness in a region traditionally viewed as fundamentalist, crude, and harsh. Readers must wade through excessive detail at times but if they persevere, the detail helps to color in the shades of this unique group.

Simply Outstanding!

In the Hands of a Happy God is a superb introduction to a kinder view of religion and especially of the doctrine of atonement. Dr. Dorgan, in an easy-to-read but quite scholarly way, shows how the notion of universal salvation enlivens a religious view that can be rather dreadful. He shows how it works in the very real lives of people who live in the Appalachian culture.

This is a must-read for anyone who has an interest in culture and religion.

Truly riveting and inspirational novel for an author's debut! Mrs. Howard boldly shares with the reading audience her personal quest to find information of the mother taken from her at such an early age.

In doing so, she passes on valuable lessons of honor, family traditions, love, and a magnificent blueprint for being Followers of Jesus Christ.

I'm sure many readers will find this novel to be truly therapeutic, and find that our Lord...really is a GOD of second chances.

Tremendous...Outstanding debut novel for this author. I eagerly await what's in store for her next manuscript.

A thirty-year veteran of the personal growth movement, Howard Wimmer writes with a particular metaphysical expertise in his self-help, self-improvement instruction manual "Inner Guidance And The Four Spiritual Gifts: How To Maximize Your intuition And Inspirations To Become More Creative, Successful And Fulfilled". Sudden hunches and flashes of inspiration occur to us all. If listened to and acted upon, they can often result in the enhancement of the quality of our lives, the achievement of our goals, and the furtherance of our aspirations. The founder of 'Inner Expansions Workshops' and the 'Inner Virtual University', Wimmer writes with a particularly 'user friendly' style that is ideal for the non-specialist general reader seeking to identify and utilize the four gifts that are the common heritage of human beings: prophecy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, and healing. The authors have done a superlative job condensing years of research into a comprehensive encyclopedia of insect pests of palms. With a holistic approach that emphasizes the biological interaction of insects with their palm hosts, and a mix of basic and applied information, this volume is an invaluable reference for anyone who works with the "royalty of plants," from the enthusiastic hobbyist to an agronomist managing extensive palm plantations. Accessible and edifying for both scientists and non-scientists, "Insects on Palms" will remain the acknowledged authority on its subject for years to come.

Foreign correspondent Jane Howard made her home in Iran for five years and raised her two children there: these experiences brought a more personal set of insights into the lives of everyday Iranian women, explored here. From tea in a nomad's tent to presidential places, Inside Iran: Women's Lives provides a different image of Iranian women than most books would offer, going beyond the veil to explore how they work outside the home, drive, and even become politicians. A fascinating report.

Five Stars
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-04
In her book, Howard discusses her life as the wife of a diplomat living in Iran for several years. She traveled all over Iran and met women from all walks of life; big city sophisticates, traditonal villagers, nomads and others. Howard discusses the ups and downs of women's lives in a totalitarian Islamic state where there is no freedom of speech or press; where saying or printing the wrong thing can result in imprisonment, fines and/or whippings. There are so many restrictions on Iranian women and Howard does a great job of describing how they get the proverbial short end of the stick in almost every aspect of life (one exception is that female homosexuality carries a lesser punishment than male homosexuality). She describes their brave struggles for personal freedoms and the same privileges that men currently enjoy.
"Inside Iran: Women's Lives" is best described by the author in one of the last paragraphs of her book:

"The general frustrations with everyday life here, the petty restrictions of the dress code and the restrictions on freedom of speech are tempered with the warmth and hospitality of Iranians. For me, it was a fascinating experience and a lot of fun. But for some women, not just foreigners, Iran sometimes feels like a life sentence from which they cannot escape."

Lots of charming black and white photos included.

Written by a Professional Loan Broker
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-23
Howard L. Russell is a professional loan broker who has been working in the trenches getting loans for his clients for years. He has also talked to thousands of people who didn't qualify for a loan and finally realized no one had written a complete book on the subject.

"After you read this book, you will be able to get a copy of your credit report and sit down at the kitchen table with a pen, paper and calculator and determine whether you qualify for a loan or not. If you don't quality, you will know exactly why and what to do about it." -Howard L. Russell

The Insider Credit Handbook will show you:

1. How to get, read and understand your credit report
2. How to establish credit
3. How to re-establish credit
4. What is a personal loan: what it takes to qualify for one and how to get it
the two kinds of car loans: what it takes to qualify and how to get one
5. Home equity loans: what they are and how to qualify to get one
6. Using a loan broker: what they do, what they charge and avoiding the rip-off guys
7. Bankruptcy and what to do next. An alternative to bankruptcy.

In the first chapter you learn exactly where to go to find your credit report. Web site info and phone numbers and how to get your report fast. In the back of the book, there are sample reports so you can read this book and see examples on the actual forms.

Once you get your "own" report, that is when this book gets really helpful!

Like: You might see: Sum-ACCTS 18, 3-ZEROS, 14-ONES

What does ACCTS:18 mean? When you see this on your report it will mean you have 18 loans listed on your credit report.

The author takes you step-by-step through your entire report! How unique to actually have someone spend that much time explaining things. Oh the beauty of books. There is no way the author could spend this much time in person because he would be out getting loans for his clients. So, this is really the "decoder" for your report. Although, I must say, he does do everything he can to help people get their credit back so they can get a loan the next time they apply. There are plenty of examples and stories that were quite interesting to read.

There are some very important "warnings" listed. Like if a loan officer pulls a credit report and sees lots of recent inquiries, it might mean you are trying to borrow a lot of money in a short period of time or you have already been turned down a few times.

You know, I don't normally review "finance" type books, but this one is dang interesting! It is like entering this secret little world of loans. The font size is nice and easy on the eyes.

This should be required reading at some time during high school! Everyone in America needs this information, because eventually you will need a loan. At that point it might be too late to undo the damage caused by mistakes you didn't even know you made!

Highly Recommended!

For the inside scoop on how to go from bad credit to good credit, this is an excellent source. It's full of sound, practical tips and information that people who want to move ahead really need to know. No matter what your income or credit history, unless you've worked in the credit business, you can't know all the facts this book has to offer. Russell has the experience in the business to know his subject from the inside out and he writes in a way that everyone can understand. One of the things I learned from this book is that there are ways to apply for loans without creating credit report inquiries. If you have bad credit, this could be a lifesaver! But whatever your financial goals, this book is sure to help you move toward them.

This book reveals how the IRS plays havoc with the lives of normal people. Told in a compelling manner that would put many novelists to shame, Alexander Howard's revelations of the way the IRS cheats the public are absorbing to say the least.

Institutional Terrorism demonstrates Howard's vast knowledge of the American tax system. Having spent the earlier part of his life hiding from the IRS, and later ironically becoming a tax consultant, he has wide experience in the field. Seven incidents are presented in detail, with complete background data, making the book more authentic. Howard uses behavioral psychology to help the reader make sense of his studies.

This is a saga of brave individuals who have undertaken grave risks to reveal to the world the malicious means employed by the IRS to cheat unsuspecting citizens.

All in all, it is a must read for anyone who is interested in what such institutions are doing to the world. Institutional Terrorism is sure to be a benchmark for future writers on similar topics.

Reading this book is like a cold shower. It is a wake up call to a reality unimaginable in 21st century America. It is hard to believe that it is not fiction! The author is very careful to provide ample documentation (copies of official letters, telephone conversation transcripts, etc) for the facts narrated in the pages of this book that should be on every taxpayer's "must read" list. As a matter of fact I think this book should be bundled with the 1040 packets the IRS is sending out in January. It should be sort of a disclaimer outlining their audit practices...

We live our lives believing that we are protected by laws, ignorant of the trial and tribulations some go through at the hands of the most powerful institution in the country, the IRS. A few years ago the IRS went through a process of retraining and restructuring with the goal of becoming a "friendlier, customer oriented" agency. This book provides a glimpse at an IRS the government told us is a thing of the past.

Not so, show the documents that support the facts in this book. Stonewalling is raised to an art form in today's IRS and the poor families portrayed here are proof that deceit, ignorance and evil are alive and well within its walls.

A crystalline fragment of aesthetic sensibility.

This is the document of a poet consecrating himself to memory. His attempt to maintain perspective; his aesthetic self objectification that is repeatedly shattered when he looks into society; his Catholocism, his ennui, his mistress, his mother...all these cast a definitely "intimate" hue to the pages that are essential for any reader wishing to come to terms with Baudelaire's psyche: to see why his self-destruction was inseparable from his creations. For they were both necessary symptoms of his sensibility - an immaculately modern sensibility. The fragmented nature of the writings prevents the work from actually being a "work" - it is more like an authentic gesture, an unpremeditated act of self revelation. A fascinating and ultimately harrowing document from a poet - nothing more.

Living from 1821 to 1867, primarily in Paris. Charles Baudelaire was his centuries poet of discontent. Religious, blasphemous, elitist and anti-snob, all at once, he seemed from the start to be a life driven to self-destruction. Absinthe, opium, and a mistress were his only relief. And in the end, the were what killed him. The epitome of the tortured soul.

Most of us know of him now only by reputation, or from exposure to Fleurs du Mal. That thin volume of poetry has had an influence far beyond it's size. In many ways, Baudelaire was one of the beat generation's greatest precursors.

The Intimate Journals is actually a collection of three sets of papers that frame the final years of Baudelaire's excruciating journey. They are the notes of a man who faced financial and physical ruin and yet still kept up his piercing intellect. In it you will find short notes essays about his world, society, and philosophy.

This isn't poetry, but a direct look into the inner thinking of a poet who is often written off as the perfect degenerate. Intimate Journals offers an opportunity to re-evaluate Baudelaire as both a man and a writer, whose thinking is equally compelling a century and a half later.

The preface written by translator Christopher Isherwood, and W. H. Auden's introduction are brilliant on their own as well (T. S. Eliot wrote the original introduction for the first edition).

Kummel's work is vast in scope, deep in research and precise in detail. While this book is not as readable as other NT intros, its intent is more to be used as a reference than a cover-to-cover read. Kummel's method is thorough--he presents the major schools of thought among scholars on a given topic, then offers his own view. It is notable that Kummel holds several opinions that go against the majority view on several issues (e.g., that Acts wasn't written by a companion of Paul and thus not by Luke the physician). Whether he agrees with the leading opinions or not, he formulates his arguments meticulously. This is a great resource for the serious NT student. Highly recommended.

This book is unmatched for its wealth of information in a concise format. It is not a "popular" narrative, but a reference work that provides an excellent summary of the best research on the New Testament. It examines each book from the perspectives of content, literary character, theology, date written, and author. Kuemmel (following his predecessors, Feine and Behm) briefly notes the significant conclusions drawn by previous scholars, drawing together a synthesis of their thought (or indicating who has had the better argument when they cannot be reconciled). The briefly stated conclusions are generally clear, and the citations allow the reader to pursue any further research.

Review Date: 1999-01-14
Robert E. Howard churned out a lot of fiction during his short lifetime, and most of the attention has been claimed by his laconic barbarians-Conan, Kull, and Bran Mak Morn-and that humorless Puritan Solomon Kane. As a result, the fantasy crowd has tended to overlook these idiosyncratic gems about a not-too-bright prizefighting sailor and his bulldog. Forget the lead story "The Iron Man"-it's just more of Howard's self-serious exploration of machismo. The Dorgan stories, however, show a real sense of humor and an ear-however odd-for palooka dialogue that approaches the Runyonesque. Sure, it's out of print, but pulp fans will find it worth hunting for.

Dennis Dorgan may be Howard's greatest character

Review Date: 1999-01-20
Although most famous for his laconic barbarians and the dour Puritan swordsman Solomon Kane, Robert E. Howard's work spilled over genre lines to include sports and pulp adventure, among other themes. The lead story, the novella "The Iron Man," is a standard Howard celebration of machismo, starring a boxer whose sole claim to attention is the ability to absorb inhuman amounts of punishment. Of considerably greater interest are the Dennis Dorgan stories that follow. Dorgan, a not-too-bright merchant marine and shore-leave pugilist with an English bulldog, is a delight. The Dorgan stories, told in a Runyonesque first-person palooka-ese, demonstrate a wit and charm that rarely surface in Howard's better-known works.
