Why does America keep going to war?Review Date: 2005-04-08
At the heart of U.S. foreign policy lays a desire for American supremacy over the world-this much is painfully clear today in light of the Iraq war. But Lens traces this thread back to the founding of America, taking a critical look at the territorial expansion of the U.S. on native lands, the occupation of Cuba and the Philippines, the "open door" economic policy in Asia and the war profiteering during both world wars.
Whether it's the Spanish-American war or the Cold War, readers can see many reflections of the past in the actions of governments today. "The Forging of the American Empire" is no mere historical narrative, it's a chronicle written so that we can understand what drives the present era of wars and globalization.
Lens' radical, materialist approach to the history of the United States is refreshing, cogent and comprehensive. It does an excellent job explaining foreign policy, but this leaves little room for domestic affairs and opposition to U.S. imperialism. I recommend checking out Howard Zinn's book alongside this one, for anyone who really wants to understand why America goes to war or bullies weaker nations.
(This is a reprint of the classic Vietnam War-era text that Lens wrote to help guide his fellow antiwar activists in a previous generation. Howard Zinn's introduction updates the book through 2003.)

"Four Hundred Years of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working?" was written by Howard Nemerov, a healthcare researcher. Nemerov used to favor total civilian disarmament, and set out to prove that gun control would make society safer. However, the results of his research had the complete opposite effect.
Through his research, Nemrov proved that strict gun control laws do not make society safer and it turned him into a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. His ongoing research has been turned into numerous articles and the book, "Four Hundred Years of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working?"
The book is filled with more than enough statistics to keep a numbers geek like me happy. Don't get me wrong, it is not just a book full of statistics, graphs, and charts. It is a highly educational and entertaining book. "Four Hundred Years of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working?" is very comparable to John Lott's book, "More Guns, Less Crime" In case you do not know, John Lott's research is held in extremely high regards by gun owners, Second Amendment advocates, patriots, and scholars. That being said, comparing Nemerov's research to John Lott`s research is a huge compliment.
"Four Hundred Years of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working?" is broken down into eight chapters, an appendix, and over thirty pages of endnotes. Unlike many anti-gun researchers, Nemerov is more than willing to show you where he obtained his information. The following is a quick summary of all eight chapters.
Chapter 1: A Brief History of Gun Control
Just as the title says, this chapter gives you a quick history on gun control. It exposes how the initial gun control laws were used to disarm blacks, Native Americans, and select groups of immigrants.
Chapter 2: Modern Experiments In Gun Control
This chapter explains how recent civilian disarmaments in England and Australia have failed to make those countries safer.
Chapter 3: Product Defect or Defective Policy
This chapter discusses how gun control advocates are trying to control guns through consumer protection laws by having them declared to be defective products. Nemerov turns the table and shows why this idea is a defective policy.
Chapter Four: The Politics of Gun Control
This chapter discusses the political side to gun control, lawsuits against the firearm industry, and more.
Chapter 5: The Information Machines of Gun Control
This chapter is definitely worth more than the price of the book alone. It discusses how gun control advocates have used the media to control the flow of information. Numerous firearms related studies are also broken down and clearly explained.
Chapter Six: The United Nations and Global Disarmament
This chapter deals with the real threat that the United Nations poses against our Second Amendment rights.
Chapter Seven: By Their Own Words
This is a short, but very powerful chapter. It discusses what the statistics from anti-gun groups actually prove.
Chapter 8: Call the Cops
This chapter discusses how Clinton's "COPS" program was not responsible for the decrease in crime during its time period.
Howard Nemerov's "Four Hundred Years of Gun Control...Why Isn't It Working?" is a must-read for all Americans. It will arm you with the facts necessary to combat the lies that are presented as facts by gun control advocates.

Therapist , Student of Author, Strongly Recommends BookReview Date: 2005-11-10
I checked with therapists locally for resources to help the 8th grade student and received a strong positive from a therapist who had studied under Dr. Liebgold. Dr. Liebgold actually had acute anxiety for many, many years. He managed to control it and/or keep it hidden. Now, he is sharing personally proven techniques that will help others impacted by anxiety.
The therapist said that the student herself could read it and benfit from it; she also said that the book would be very helpful to parents.

If you are not ready to read Hegel, read thisReview Date: 2000-08-11
What I like most about this book is that it works hard to reach the new student. Dr. Kainz removes all jargon and technical language, except to define the more common terms used by the experts in the field. He also includes diagrams to help explain complex abstract concepts. It is not often that a professor works so diligently to reach his students. He also succeeds in making his language contemporary and easy-to-read.
Dr. Kainz covers the whole gamut of Hegel's corpus and provides high-level overviews of most key ideas in Hegel's philosophy. I wish I had this book in the 1980's when I was struggling with the literature on Hegel, but in fact Dr. Kainz' book was probably not possible until 1996 because the scholarship on Hegel had to undergo a major change - it had to break away from the literature of Marxism and only the fall of the USSR could make that possible. The scholarship on Hegel since the fall of the USSR is very different - I say superior - compared with the scholarship before that period. This is due partly to English translations (finally) of all of Hegel's main works, and partly to the recognition that Hegel is not only widely different from Marx, but his work may better stand the test of time.
Howard P. Kainz is a world-renowned expert in Hegel scholarship. He is not always an advocate of Hegel's thought and he can ask some very pointed questions and offer some very critical comments. However, Dr. Kainz makes use of the latest Hegel scholarship so the new student benefits enormously. If you are thinking about reading Hegel and have seen how difficult it can be, and so are looking for a brief, high-level, yet comprehensive critique of Hegel's thought, this book is for you. I give it five stars.

An entertaining readReview Date: 2008-06-29
And so begins a fast moving tale, which reads well, has well-drawn characters and a possible supernatural element. Banner unearths all kinds of clues about the ghost and other suspects but struggles for evidence and the more he probes the more he discovers about the people he's trying to protect from the ghost. Seems there might be a lot more going on than just a ghost hanging his killers.
An entertaining read and I will be reading another by this writer.
The Gallows GhostReview Date: 2006-09-26
Together, the sheriff, and the ranchers have become judge, jury, and executioners of Bob Diller, the man the Sheriff says is guilty of the crimes. But Bob swears he is innocent. This doesn't stop these men however. They intend to hang him, no matter what Bob swears, or doesn't swear. Right up to the end, he professes his innocence, until he finally comes to the realization that nothing he says is going to stop them. With that realization, he swears that he will return, and he will revenge his own murder.
Six months later, the killings start. One after another, the members of the Cattlemen's Association start turning up dead. Is it the ghost of Bob Diller returning to avenge his honor, and death? Caleb Forester doesn't know, but he does know that he has to protect his daughter. The only way to do this is to hire someone to find out what is going on, and who is responsible for these deaths. Ghost, or not.
Luke Banner, also known as "The Man Killer" is hired by Forester to find out who is behind these killings. Luke has no shortage of human suspects. Even a skull-faced ghost dressed in black.
I have to say before I read "The Gallows Ghost" I honestly didn't know if I would like it or not, as I have never been a big western fan. But this book is not only a 'western'. It is a detective story, a mystery, and even a romance, written with the west as the background. And superbly done.
Mr. Howard has written a story that will grab you, and take you for a ride across the plains, on a trip you will not forget.
He takes you into the emotions of a man, who you think you should hate, and cannot do so. He puts you into the life of another man who you feel has no heart, and you find that he has more heart than most.
One minute you are sure that you know who is behind the whole thing, the next you are sure another is. And then that is changed.
I highly recommend that you read this superbly written book. It is written by a man, who knows how to put words together, to make you laugh, cry, and even shiver in fear. But never will you be bored.
Mr. Howard is truly the master of mystery, horror, and yes, even westerns.
