Warriors of the Steppes is the second in a four-volume set that collects, for the first time, the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb and presents them in order: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never before appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features never-before reprinted essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

This second volume collects all five tales of Khlit's greatest friend, the valorous Abdul Dost, and Dost's comrade Sir Ralph Weyand. Life across the Roof of the World is more dangerous than ever as Khlit teams up with Abdul to thwart a gang of kidnappers, stamp out a cult of stranglers, save the dazzling Retha, and reluctantly lead an Afghani rebellion against the forces of the Mogul. Contained herein are the THREE NEVER-BEFORE-COLLECTED stories of Khlit the Cossack, including the short novel The Curved Sword.

When your fans include Robert E. Howard, David Drake and SM Stirling, you must be doing something right. Such is the case with Harold Lamb. In this second volume of Lamb's "Cossack" adventures, the stories get better and better as you progress through the book. Considering that the first tale is excellent, you can't go wrong buying this book. If you are a fan of swashbuckling adventure, you owe it to yourself to check out Harold Lamb.

Very, very good.

I bought this book (and the companion volume) after reading some of Lamb's work in the 'Flashing Swords' ezine and anthology from Pitch-Black Press (Sages and Swords). I'd never heard of Lamb before--and now I've read his work, I'm stumped if I know why that is. Everything that's good about adventure fiction is in this book: strong and cunning protagonists, treacherous villains, and exotic locales, and all written in a clean and fast-paced prose style I wish I could emulate.

I read the whole thing in a week, then read the other volume straight after. When I finished, I went back and read them again.

My only caveat about the books has nothing to do with the stories, but the covers. The stock used for the covers is a little thin, and it warps badly if it gets damp. If you do buy a copy (and you should), then keep the cover away from water, otherwise it will curl and start to come apart.

If you're at all interested in adventure fiction, you should buy this book and any others by Lamb you can. Really, they're very, very good.

Susan links the website to the bigger picture of how it supports the strategic & operational planning of the small business owner. It takes one step-by-step through the mechanics of the website design development process, along the way she shows REAL examples of websites that she has develolped that complement & clearly express the virtues of each step. She takes one from the website development stage to the execution of it in an operating business, clearly showing that the work does not stop at design. We must know how to actually operate and maintain the website in order to promulgate the development of our small business. The book is an excellent, clear & concise hands on tool for the improvement of your business.

This book makes the complex process of web development much easier to understand and execute. If you want to use your web site to grow your business (and there is no reason why you wouldn't) read this book.

Web Sites That Sell takes you through a step-by-step strategic process to do it right the first time. It's provides an easy to follow roadmap; which is especially helpful if your not a developer. The book also illustrates real-world examples on how companies have used this approach to launch or redesign their web sites.

I used the "Howard Cycle" on my own site...plain and simple, it works. It gave me the visitors' perspective, which in turn helped me make better decisions. The worksheets are also a wonderful tool. It's a quick read and a great desk reference.

Being five is so much fun! It's hard to decide what is my favorite thing about my 5 year olds. This book definitely makes it clear what 5 years are capable of imagining! Their creativity esscalates in this book. It is a great book to read for the students on the first day of Kindergarten. They want to hear it over and over again! I like to read it to them as many times as they like to hear it!

A couple of years ago, after moving to Las Vegas,NEW MEXICO, our local bookstore proprietor suggested I read Howard Bryan's book regarding some of the more violent pieces of local history. I read with interest and disdain how it was that the US Army under General Kearney's command wiped out the village of Los Valles near here and nearly destroyed the Taos Pueblo, "leaving a few houses standing to shelter the women and children." That was in 1847 during the period of "pacification" after the US had defeated Mexico.

As appaling the events at Los Valles and Taos Pueblo were, at least there was a modicum of human decency in US Military Policy. There was a certain respect for the humanity of the native peoples, a desire to provide some protection for the women and children. All that changed in the next 20 years or so as witnessed at Wounded Knee where women and children were slaughtered by the US Army.

We have a beautiful public square known as the Plaza here in "The Meadow City." Bryan discusses the historical fact that public hangings were a frequent event of some degree of entertainment. The executions took place from a windmill in the center of the Plaza. Today a bandstand sits where the windmill executions once occured. As Bryan points out the hangings stopped when one day Las Vegans came to the realization that the executions were having detrimental effects upon the younger generation: children had taken to playing at hangings! What better rationale can we find in modern times to end our current versions of capital punishment?

This is a must read especially for those fascinated with the history of the American West.

I'm a native of this town (born there in 1923) and found Howard Bryan's book an outstanding and worthwhile account. I've recounted some of his tales to people in other states and countries, and encountered disbelief. It sounds too much like a B movie to be credible, but it's all true. In fact, it's understated.

My father had one of the original posters which is reproduced on the back of the jacket, and I can testify it is authentic.

Most people find it hard to believe such a tough town could stay that way for as long as Las Vegas NEW MEXICO did. The original Las Vegas was established a hundred years before Bugsy Seigal the mobster started his air-conditioned, neon-lit palace for city dudes, hundreds of miles away, in the Nevada desert.

The photographs are also historical artifacts of great value.
I recommend the book with great enthusiasm.

This is a very easy reading book, with some of the most compelling short stories (true short stories) of the Las Vegas, New Mexico area, during the 1800 and very early 1900s. You pick up some amazing historical facts... and hear some tales of famous, or infamous characters that simply amaze!

Low cost, easy to read, and gives you several of those "Oh my ...." moments when you least expect them. A great read.Wildest of the Wild West: True Tales of a Frontier Town on the Santa Fe Trail

Wounded Warriors, Chosen Lives provides a compassionate and supportive response to those seeking healing and resolution for severe woundings of the human spirit. This prophetic call for personal accountability is balanced with good news of hope and renewal through God's transforming power. Olsen's use of personal accounts by Vietnam veterans and his compelling statistics of the lingering effect of the war on those who fought it are deeply moving. His experience as a veteran and as a Christian counselor ministering to the needs of thousands of fellow veterans gives him a powerful credential to speak words of truth and of hope. The book Zak's Lunch is about a kid and his lunch. Zak hears his mom say, "Zak, time for lunch." Zak runs down the stairs and goes into the kitchen. He looks at his lunch and says..., "Yuck ham and cheese sandwich!" His mom does not like his attitude, and then his mom gives him grief. Zak dreams about his own restaurant where he can have his own food any time he wants. His mom wakes Zak up and says, "I want that sandwich gone and when I say gone, I mean gone!"
My favorite part of the story is Zak's dream, though I don't believe it will ever come true. You can find out exactly what Zak dreams if you read this humorous book. I recommend it for people who like funny stories.

My wife and I have enjoyed this book so much we have bought dozens of copies and provide them for couples with whom we counsel in the Marriage and Family Institute of Tulsa. It is well researced and has great illustrations. It's condensed, but powerful approach to the marriage relationship is something that men seem to enjoy. Where we've had trouble getting men to read other books, they seem to benefit by this one. Easy to read. Well researched, good illustrations. Best thing I liked was the help for speakers and listeners. Terry Bell (Author of "The Love Ethic")The Love Ethic

This is a book that definitely should come back in print!

My favorite book as a middle-schooler, it introduced me to fantasy for children in a me (to me) truly exotic location--New York City. How exciting it is to remember Merlin the black cat, who leads young Jill and and her brother Ronnie on magical adventures in Central Park, in a medieval dragon-"infested" castle, among the constellations, with Indian head pennies come to life, and much more. And it's funny too!

Magical book

The 13th is Magic has haunted my imagination since I read it as a child more than 50 years ago. I came back to it on discovering recently that The Cat's Fugue is a real piece of music by Scarlatti (Sonata 30 in Kirkpatrick numbering). It has become one of my favorites. Other memorable associations are with whistling, pennies, and Robert Heinlein's story The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag (also involving a non-existent floor in a building).

Yes, indeed, The 13th is Magic needs to be brought back into print, or else the copyright laws brought back to sanity. Under the old rules (28 years, renewable for another 28), its copyright would have run from 1950 to 2006. Now I don't even know how long it is protected (author's lifetime plus 75 years=??, but certainly later than 2025), to the profit of nobody, not the author, not the publishers, and especially not the children.
