We are all familiar with the fact that dinosaurs roamed the Earth millions of years ago. But, they weren't alone. Other creatures, now extinct, lived and roamed the Earth along with them and Howard Zimmerman has devoted his new and terrific book, Beyond The Dinosaurs, to exploring these fantastic prehistoric beasts. He has divided this book into three categories, Sky Dragons (pterosaurs), Sea Monsters (marine reptiles) and Mega-Mammals, and filled each page with a wealth of fun facts and historical information. His text, written in an easy to read, conversational style details when and where each animal lived, its size, how it looked, what it ate, and much more and includes marvelous, action-packed paintings by some of the world's best illustrators of prehistoric animals. Youngsters will be mesmerized as they pore over all the wonderful detail in each picture. From the Quetzalcoatlus, the largest pterosaur with a wingspan of 40 feet, to the Kronosaurus, a 45 foot sea monster, to the Wooly Rhinoceros and Smilodon (Saber-toothed cat), this is a fascinating book that children 9-12 won't be able to put down. Beyond The Dinosaurs includes an instructive introduction, to set the stage, an index, and a list of special web sites kids can visit for even more information about their favorite creatures. This is definitely a book older dinosaur enthusiasts shouldn't miss.

The book is good for those who are interested in prehistoric creatures in general, especially for children and adults who don't want to go in depth concerning these ancient animals. The book is marvellously done with colored and beautiful pictures. I don't regret buying the book.

This art book is almost like a sequel to the last years hit "Dinosaurs! The Biggest,Baddest,Strangest & Fastest!"which I also own. When I saw that one I loved it. Both books are of huge format with excellent art work by some of the world`s top paleoartists. Because the first one was so good,I tried the sequel without doubt of ordering it. And I found it as good as I was hoping for. The first chapter treats pterosaurs, among them the gigantic Quetzalcoatlus, the humorous-looking Batrachognathus and Pteranodon. The second chapter is the funniest and it treats some of my favourite prehistoric animals, like Elasmosaurus with it`s 25-foot neck, the fierce monitor Tylosaurus and the enormous Kronosaurus, the sea king of the mesozoic! The third chapter has beautifull pictures of mammals as the saber-toothed tiger, wooly mammoths,strange-looking rhinoceroses (Brontotherium)and the most frightening bird ever existed, the 10-foot tall Diatryma that looks like a cross between an eagle and a T-rex!

Over all, this one is as good as the first book and a very good complement. I thought there was something missing in the first. And that was the other prehistoric animals. Together, these books are my most famous inspiration source for my story "The Island Forgotten by Time"with all of the famous action motifs of the pictures as well as just beauty. If you own the first, try this. If you don't own them, buy them both! These books are actually children`s books but for a dinosaur fan,it doesn`t matter. For children, buy it for the text. For paleontologists, some of the illustrations are invaluable! So I bought it for the images, not for the text,as I am a seriously interested dinosaur maniac too!

A beautifully illustrated book

"Beyond the Dinosaurs!", by Howard Zimmerman, is an excellent book for children who are fascinated by dinosaurs and other long-extinct creatures. As the title indicates, this book focuses on the other animals that inhabited the world of the dinosaurs. The book is divided into three sections. The first is devoted to pterosaurs (flying reptiles), the second to marine reptiles, and the third to a variety of other creatures (mammals, flightless birds, and mammal-like reptiles).

The large, full-color illustrations include contributions by a variety of different artists. Many of the paintings are exciting action shots showing these creatures hunting, flying, and engaging in other activities.

Creatures depicted include the Quetzalcoatlus (a pterosaur whose wingspan could reach 40 feet), the large-eyed opthalmosaurus (an aquatic lizard), the dinornis (an ostrich-like giant bird), the procoptodon (a giant kangaroo), the woolly rhinoceros, and other marvelous creatures. This is a book that is both fun and educational.

The Carl Rogers Reader is an excellent, thought-provoking collection of articles by Carl Rogers from different stages in his career and covering many subjects linked to the person-centred approach to psychotherapy. I found this book fascinating, enlightening and occasionally surprising; for example, when I realised just how much he was against accreditation for therapists. At all times, the life-affirming nature of the man shines through. If you are preparing to be a therapist and are drawn to the person-centred way, or are simply interested in the life and work of Carl Rogers, you will find this book a treasure trove.

This book is an excellent synopsis of Carl Rogers life's work. Instead of researching several other volumes, this text provides an accurate and complete re-telling of the development of Rogerian Client-Centred Therapy. The authors have captured the essence of Carl Rogers and his voice is evident throughout the text. A worthwhile read for those new to Rogerian Therapy.

always a pleasure to read rogers. this book is a compilation of many wonderful pieces. rogers had a great ability to see beyond the surface and connect with people in a very real, personal, and therapeutic way. in an at times parental sort of way, rogers was able to see through to the heart of a patient and his issues and bring insight and hope. great read for those new to psychological theory/practice AND those who have been doing it for awhile.

I have been working as a therapist for over 10 years and, to my shame, have only now started to read any of Rogers' work. This selection of his writings strikes me as amazingly modern and relevant to the work of anyone in the 'helping' professions. I have been struck by the almost spiritual quality of his thoughts, and the way in which he cuts through any psychological or psychotherapeutic dogma. I have been truly inspired by this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in human relationships; I believe that anyone would come away with new and profound insights that would challenge, stimulate and reassure. An excellent book!

A Dedicated Lady

Review Date: 2000-11-09
Helen F. Copley is indeed a dedicated lady. Her book, written in an absorbing and happy tone keeps ones eyes glued to Helen's captivating text. The deceased illustrater, Howard Chandler Christy, is not an easy target for research in books, and certainly tougher to follow his tracks to places where his paintings still existed. Helen did it all. She travelled from her home in Dallas to New York City, Vermont, Ohio and California all places where Christy once lived. She located his paintings in Dallas, Ohio, and South Carolina. In Northern Florida she visited a Stephen Foster museum on the banks of the Suwanee River where Foster's melodies, "Beautiful Dreamer" and "Many Happy Days" were captured on canvass in splendid reverees that only Christy could do. Helen visited all Christy's past haunts, interviewed surviving aquaintances, and spoke to living relatives including Christy's daughter. In her travels Helen never tired. She kept up an exhausting pace. If it were not for her travelling companion, Carol Anne, Helen would still be on her Quest.

Helen's keen observations and her trips, sometime intuitive, always brought more of the unknown Christy to light. Her writing is cheerful descriptive and a delightful experience for everyone not merely Christy afficianados. Helen is a Howard Chandler Christy muse. She would not have been out of place with Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. This is a must read for all.

The Christy Quest is the story of Helen Copley's diligent research about the artist Howard Chandler Christy. The artist and his work is certainly central to the book but not the real story. The book is a joyous tale of the author's quest for knowledge about herself and her subject. The miracles encountered and so easily communicated are the product of many right next steps taken by the author. The book is a roadmap for anyone who is considering writing a nonfiction book. It is also a must read for anyone who needs a little encouragement to take a chance on themselves and a dream.

What a delightful read! I did not know that I was familiar with Howard Chandler Christy, until I reviewed some of his works. His paintings are captivating; I can imagine how that portrait of Christ could have begun this journey. Ms. Copley's story of twists and turns, and "coincidences" that continued to lead her on capture the reader. Remembrances of life at The Hotel des Artistes, and the hints of Christy's own independent and fascinating life have whetted my appetite for more writings of the artist, the man. But I am even more impressed by the author herself. She followed her interest, listened to those little strong voices, and accepted encouragement to complete a wonderful story. Her travels and discoveries in New York and elsewhere are inspiring. I anxiously await more work by Helen Copley.

Review Date: 2000-02-04
The Christy in "The Christy Quest" is Howard Chandler Christy, one of the leading figures in America's Golden Age of Illustration. A fascinating and prolific artist, Christy produced a vast diversity of work over a lengthy career, ranging from Gibson-girl sweethearts to the nudes adorning the walls of New York's Cafe des Artistes to religious paintings done in his last years. But this is not really a book about Christy's work, or for that matter about his life either, other than tangentially!

I've heard a theory to the effect that you can pick any two people on earth, and forge a connection between them involving no more than eight other people. In other words, starting at one end of the chain, there is some person you know or know of, who could lead you to a second person they know or know of, who in turn could lead you to a third, and eventually, you would reach the target individual. The trick, of course, is to find the right eight people!

Helen Copley's book tells the story of the connections she forged, over about a dozen years, following her first exposure to a Christy image. The beginning is (and apparently was, for her also) slow and somewhat painful. But after hitting the real start of the quest, on p. 22, one is quickly swept into the details of the hunt -- the places she travelled to find Christy's paintings, his relatives, those people still alive who knew him personally. The cast includes many well-known characters, both in the public and illustration history worlds, and their depictions often seem like much of Christy's own work, generous and ebullient. Over and over again, Ms. Copley found the right connections -- just the right "eight people" to advance her quest. She often ascribes these successes to some almost divine or miraculous intervention, but the reader can tell their real source. It is the hard work, painstaking research, dogged determination, and in the end, the strength of her love for Christy's work, that produced the results. In this case, the fates certainly helped those who helped themselves, and the result is an entertaining canvas of its own.

I have the first 3 in this series:
The Frost Giant's Daughter And Other Stories, The God In The Bowl And Other Stories and The Tower Of The Elephant And Other Stories.

I find the artwork to be superior to the "Chronicals of Conan", and there is always at least one original Howard tale included in these books. The "Other Stories" stand up very well to the Howard adventures. They are very much in the same spirit and style, and are fitting tributes.
So far all have been extremely enjoyable, and I plan to purchase the rest of them.
I only buy what I like (as opposed to collecting for its own sake), and I like this!!

Great for new readers and old Conan fans alike!

I don't think this third volume lives up to the other two. The story is still pretty solid, and for the most part the art is up to par. There's a few pages where the art takes a noticeable decrease in quality though. There's a few really good moments in this book so I still recommend picking it up.

Review Date: 2005-12-02
While devouring this book, I really felt that I was getting close to, quote unquote, "The Answer." That's how powerful it was on both me and, as I see, some of my fellow reviewers. So much of it has to do with making decisions, and making decisions is an integral part of Soren K's definition of truth. But you have to get at it subjectively, not objectively. There's one part where, let's say, you (the reader) are in prison, and you will get your head chopped off by the guillotine tomorrow. You are afraid, naturally. I, as your friend, can talk to you and say (objectively), "Oh, you're worried about the guillotine tomorrow. You see, it's very simple: you just walk out to the scaffold, put your head down on the slab of wood, making sure to put your neck in the appropriate neck hole; they will cut a rope, the blade of the guillotine will come down, your head will be chopped off, and it will all be over in a minute." You, the subjective decision-maker, do not see it in the same way.

Be Warned!!

Be warned! The Princeton edition of this book comes in two volumes. Volume 1 is just the body of text to Kierkegaard's book. There is no historical introduction in the first volume, just Kierkegaard's satirical introduction that was intended for the original book. The historical introduction and scholarly apparatus are in the second volume. If the reader does not wish to inquire beyond Kierkegaard's text, he need not worry, the second volume is for the person who did not find Kierkegaard mind numbing enough and sees need to go behind the text. I am one of those kind of people, but you might not be.

A monumental work

Review Date: 2003-06-12
This is Kierkegaard's most important work - the real meat of his writings. It is more difficult then most of his works and should be approached with caution, but it is absolutely essential to achieve a full understanding of Kierkegaard. Keep in mind that _Concluding Unscientific Postscript_ was originally written under the pseudonym of Johannes Climacus, the sceptical and pessimistic alter ego of the real Kierkegaard. Not to spoil the surprise, but in reading this book you should remember that much of what is being said is contradictory to Kierkegaard's real beliefs. In my experience reading this book, I only began to realize this gradually. This is because not EVERYTHING in this book is antithetical or diametrically opposed to Kierkegaard's real views; only portions of it are antithetical. Kierkegaard truly engages and challenges the reader by exposing views that make sense at first, but then after letting Climacus get riled up, his rantings and ravings become increasingly illogical and pessimistic. The challenge consists in discovering where the real Kierkegaard leaves off, and where the pseudonymous Johannes Climacus picks up. The reader must constantly be on alert for antithetical and contradictory statements, and must approach this book with a highly critical mindset. The end result is one of the most fantastically thought-provoking, creative, original, and entertaining books you will ever read. By forcing the reader to take this critical approach, Kierkegaard gives us an opportunity to formulate and fortify our individual beliefs in contradistinction to those of Climacus, forcing us to truly think for ourselves. The reader is bombarded with profound philosophical statements which are oten true and sensible, and can be proven consitsent with Kierkegaard's real beliefs. But sandwiched between these logical statements, Climacus will say something so off the wall that the reader must subject these statements to a critical re-evaluation. This is what makes the _Postscript_ such a profoundly thought-provoking and personally enriching experience.

One more thing to consider before you read this book: As I said, this book was written under the pseudonym Johannes Climacus. To fully understand the inner workings of this character, you must also read _Philosophical Fragments/Johannes Climacus_, which is the precursor to _Concluding Unscientific Postscript_. This first book helps the reader understand the pseudonymous and sometimes antithetical beliefs held by Kierkegaard's neurotic alter-ego. Taken together, the _Johannes Climacus/Philosophical Fragments/ Conlcuding Unscientific Postscript_ series is the be-all end-all philosophical work of the 19th century. It is a monumental achievement of epic proportions and will go down in history as the most important and profound work of literature to come out of Europe during that time period.

take the leap

Along with Nietzsche's The Gay Science, this book had the most impact on me of any philosophy books I have ever read. For those who find themselves running around in cirles looking for objective proof of this or that, Climacus (Kierkegaard) insists you are just wading out into the sea of life. Take the leap onto 70,000 fathoms of roaring ocean! Live!

After Hegel's reduction of the individual to a cog in the grumbling historical machine, it is refreshing to read of the individual and the individuals concerns. As mentioned, Climacus ridicules objectivity and focuses the reader in on subjective truth, encouraging us to be authentic and take responsiblity for life. Christian or non-Christian alike, this book will challange the reader in many ways. It was a major influence on existentialist and Continental thought for a good reason. Unconditionally recommended.

A comic tour de force

To begin with, the title is a joke. This is the in keeping with the putative author of the piece. Johannes Climacus (who is named for the Seventh Century Hermit and Monk, St. John Climacus) is a humorist. A humorist, as he will point out, is someone on edge of becoming religious, but is not yet religious and, in fact, may never become religious. That being said, back to the title. "Concluding," as is obvious, implies that SK intended this to be his last book (in a separate declaration published with the book he acknowledges all the previous pseudonyms with the proviso that no one should quote him directly unless it is from a book that bears his name as author and claims that he has no privileged access to the pseudonyms than any other reader). However, as the result of a religious conversion after it's publication, it became the middle child of his authorship, recapitulating all that had come before and pointing forward toward new things yet to be imagined. "Unscientific" is a dig at Hegel. If one wishes to over-simplify one may say that SK's position is Either/Or: Either there is a God and the world actually means something, Or there is no God and the world is absurd, meaningless and accidental. Hegel abolished God and attempted to find meaning in historical process. This is the "science" for which SK has such contempt. For this reason, SK refuses to call himself a philosopher, content to call himself a "poet." If a fraud like Hegel is a philosopher, then he wants no part of the designation. "Postscript" is where the joke comes in. This book is a "Postscript to the Philosophical Fragments." The "Philosophical Fragments" is, therefore, a 100 page book with a 600 page postscript attached (that's the joke ha ha) Of all of SK's books this is my favorite. It is his funniest and either you keep your eye carefully peeled or you will miss a joke (the first time you read it you will miss hundreds of them). And in typical SK fashion the more he jokes the more deadly serious he is (by the end he is claiming the book, in its entirety, is a joke). The central distinction is between our ideas about things and the things themselves. If you have any trouble, there is always Merold Westphal's "Becoming a Self," a good commentary. The only problem is that he probably takes SK more seriously than SK would be comfortable with. That's not necessarily a good thing. You lose too many good jokes in the process.

A great resource for any CEO, business manager, marketer, pr or advertising person. Howard brings a fresh approach to managing your corporate image from much more than just a design point of view.

The corporate image and the process of managing it is a discipline that affects all areas of your business. Now you can find out how to turn this to your advantage.

The use of live examples throughout the book helps to clearly illustrate the effect that the mis-management, and pro-active management of your corporate image has on the public, your customers and prospects.

It is a unique book in the subject of corporate image.

I have read the book three times. It was very useful for my doctorate thesis. It brings a new approach to the corporate image subject. It supports the idea that corporate image is not just a graphic design, it is also a marketing and a management discipline. For this reason it is not enough to design corporate image, it also has to be managed. This is a new idea that nobody thought it before. I also like the new idea that with this new approach corporate image has some functions as being a catalyst for change, as a filters in the communication process and as being 5.P of marketing mix. By having a new ideas about this subject, it is a unique book in the subject of corporate image. This book is also very useful for companys which want to take an advantage in the global world by building an efficient corporate image. Lastly, the book contains new ideas and new approaches about corporate image. And whoever interested in this subject, he should read this book. Ireally recommend it.

One of the most interesting book i have read about the importance of corporate identity. It is absolutely important to know how to build a good identity and how to communicate the same to the client.

I'm 100% accurate that in the next years to come, identity, image, communication will be the most important assets in guatemalan companies.

Excellent! A 'how to' approach to the new paradigm

The new paradigm being promoted by Howard (and an increasing number of others in the field) is the view of Corporate Image as a completely integrated discipline - reaching far beyond the traditional (logo/font/colours/packaging etc) design approach. It's summed up in the quote, 'if it touches the consumer it's a Corporate Image issue'.

The book goes on to provide, along with a host of case studies and examples, practical steps to performing everything from an initial audit to executing a full Corporate Image program. Includes check-lists, best-practice suggestions, and some serious points on change management that must also be heeded if any such programme is to succeed!

I'll use this book for years to come as a reference and guide.

Growing up watching the TV shows and later watching them on Christian TV, I am a great fan of theirs. I even visited their museum in California and just missed seeing Roy. I loved the book. I'm not a great reader but couldn't put it down. I even plan to read it again!

Chris Enss's, The Cowboy and the Senorita: A Biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans is one of the most heart-warming and well written biographies about the "King of the Cowboys" and the "Queen of the West." The personal stories of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are very well crafted, and the author is able to capture the essence and soul of these two wonderful people. Ms. Enss is articulate, animated, and amazing when she read excerpts from her book at a Barnes & Noble store. Fans of her wonderful book should really meet the author in person. I truly hope an audio version of this book gets produced soon.

This story should be required reading !

There is a reason why Roy and Dale were and are national treasures, and The Cowboy And The Senorita reminded me why...their convictions, integrity and humility demanded that they were off screen what they were on screen, and their fans knew it and loved them for it. This was not only a nostalgic, entertaining, and inspiring story, I found it direct and readable and loaded with some wonderful rare photos. This is going to be the gift I give to everyone my age and older who needs a smile and a warm memory, and to everyone my age and younger who needs proven and tested human heroes to look up to and imitate. Happy Trails, y'all.

Now my opinion may be a little bit biased since my dad is the author of "Deadly Refuge" but I still enjoyed the book very much.

I was 13 when the book came out, and although I was extremely excited that my dad had published his own novel, I wasn't all that thrilled about reading it.

But then about a year and half later, I decided to read it for english class for a book report, and to tell you the truth, I loved it.

It's very well written and is extremely entertaining if you know Long Island (and even more so for me, because there are scenes describing my living room, which I know very well).

There are some intense scenes, and I think it ends well.

Now, I'm not just telling you to buy this book because it could help send me to college, but buy it because it's funny, and a pleasure to read.

And maybe if enough people buy, it can prompt my dad to write a sequel, which of course, the star will be based after his amazing 15 year old daught. ;)

Review of "Deadly Refuge" by Howard Gimple

...

"Deadly Refuge" is a fast-moving tale of terrorism in the unlikely setting of Long Island. The equally unlikely protagonist is Hannah Swensen, a bird watcher and wild life enthusiast who discovers strange goings-on in the heart of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, close to Kennedy Airport.

When she teams up with a U.S. Customs Special Agent called Jack Lager, Hannah is drawn into a series of dangerous adventures as they try to identify an enemy who is both mysterious and completely ruthless. The drama is heightened by the ordinariness of the Long Island suburban landscape, and anyone who knows the Island will enjoy the use the author makes of familiar settings such as Riverhead, Farmingdale, and the Long Island Expressway.

It would give too much away to explain who the terrorists prove to be, or what is their target, but the action keeps going until the satisfying dénouement on the last page.

Lawn Guyland gets the thrillah it deserves

This nimbly plotted thriller delivers the goods, genre-wise -- plenty of splashy violence ensues when a gutsy ingenue faces down your basic sinister international conspiracy reaching to the highest levels of government -- but it's the persuasively rendered Long Island milieu and deftly humorous characterizations that stand out. Above all, the heroine's doddering, happily pixilated mom is a rich comic creation who could carry a sequel, or a series, all by herself.

A great Thriller

Through witty dialogue and a suspenseful plot, Howard Gimple offers the reader an absorbing contemporary thriller with a dash of romance woven in. Hannah Swensen, a wildlife photographer and thirty-something divorcee living with her colorful mother, finds herself solidly embroiled in a mystery one day while out shooting the mating ritual of a male egret at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Hannah's roll of film captures more than it should have and lands her in the middle of an international conspiracy of smuggling and murder, linking South Africa and Long Island, New York. Jack Lager, a U.S. Customs investigator, follows clues that lead him to the Wildlife Refuge-and Hannah. Their unlikely partnership in solving the crimes results in a roller-coaster ride of compelling drama and keen suspense.
