This book is very good accompanied with a more basic Romanian Learning book like: Teach Yourself Romanian Complete Course Audiopackage. It's definetly not a stand-alone learning tool.
It has some very useful hints/tips for helping you learn, but overall it's more of a reference guide where you can easily look up verb conjugations and other grammar structures.

I have bought a small number of books to learn Romanian recently. Some are really useful, others won't help much.

My conclusion is: buy a good full course book (the one from Assimil is great, and has an option with audio from the lessons spoken by native Romanians), this grammar, a good dictionary, and you will have everything needed to start learning Romanian by yourself.

Good for a Grammar Book!

Grammar teachers were never known for their ability to communicate intelligently. So I wasn't expecting much. But actually this book is very useful for an intermediate Romanian language student such as myelf. I recommend it ...not that you have a lot of other choices in the US marketplace. -Christian

I am using this booklet to help me study Romanian.
Grammar is explained but, as a book for learning, it lacks a lot of text. I blame that on the publisher as well as another point of criticism: Romania had another spelling reform. Time to revise, Hippocrene!!
For all the work done on this special language a 'well done' to Christina.

This hentai author himself and all related persons who published this book/articles on Mainichi Daily News are accused as being fake, and Mainichi admitted these are corrupted so wildly. Some people started boycotting Mainichi News Paper. This is a big fuss and if you read this and ask about it to Japanese, I am sure most of people get angry.

In Japan, MAINICHI-SINBUN is severely blamed by many citizens and sponsors and there is actions to accuse this company of the defamation of Japanese character.

Reading "Tabloid Tokyo" is sort of a chicken-and-egg scenario - is the country as peculiar as these stories let on...or are the stories more an outgrowth of Japan's hyper-aggressive "wild weekly" reporting? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. One thing for sure: you'll be struck with the impression after breezing through this compilation that the brand of journalism practiced in this market segment is, ummm, "participatory." It is pointed out in the intro through, that "wild weekly" practices are light-years removed from the clubby, staid atmosphere of the mainstream, daily press. For someone who's been bored to tears by the Nikkei Shimbun and its brethren, this dichotomy is jarring.

Here's something to note about "Tabloid Tokyo" that made it sort of an odd read: the book's 101 two- to three-pages pieces were compiled by four Westerners with long-time roots in Japan. I had originally thought these editors simply translated the pieces. But, to the contrary: they've actually translated, summarized and interpreted them. Until you realize that, the book appears to have a rather stilted flavor, with reporters referring to their investigatory exploits in a strained third-person fashion. Once you realize instead that one of the four editors is giving you his interpretation of the original piece, things make more sense. Still, this is a technique I would have liked to have seen explained in the preface.

i think that aquariem was awesome i read it 2 times. i think that it should have a newbarry award. my favroite part was when they found the mermaide. i also like the part when she go's on a date with the man that worked at the shack.the sadest part was when the mermaid was getting sick and she was falling apart.well at least they got her back inside of the sea.
i thought that indigo was my favroite in the hole story i would rate it 5 stars. i think that it was wrong to even put up that wall so that they could not see the pretty view of the ocean. that was such a great book i loved it ecspeacally when they found there mom.

I love to read. Espeacially fantasies. I was so excited to see this book sitting on the shelf, after reading a great mermaid book I had to read more. This book was not at all intended for me. It was a story collection and none were very good. I thought a lot more work could have been added and more descriptions. I only recomend it to children in 3rd grade, though it does not have pictures for the younger. I highly suggest that if you are any older then don't read it. I disliked it a lot, the stories were really cheesy.

Aquamarine: This book had the potential of being interesting and fun to read. But instead this book was just bland.

Hailey and Claire are best friends and they have one summer together before Claire has to move to Florida, leaving Hailey beind. Their 'hang-out' is the nearly abandoned country club, with it's very green, dirty pool. One day they find a mermaid in the pool and when the mermaid asks them to set her up on a date with the only employee of the country club, they help her fulfill this wish before putting her back in the ocean.

Indigo: I got the impression that I was like I wasn't even reading a real book; it was more like reading something that a 4 year old dreams about. And not in a good way. This book has a stupid plot line.

Martha, Eli and Trevor are best friends. They live in the very dry town of Oak Grove. All the people of Oak Grove are terrified of water because of a flood that the town had a few years prior. But Martha, Eli and Trevor all want to see the ocean, despite their parent's wishes to have stay on dry land all their lives. So the children all start walking one day to get to the ocean. A storm comes and a tree branch falls onto Martha and hurts her, so they turn back to Oak Grove. And Eli and Trevor save Martha and all the townspeople because they can naturally swim, because they are offspring to mermaids.

I do not recomend this book. Not worth buying, let alone reading.

This is a developers methodology book, not a programming "how-to".

Review Date: 2006-01-21
This book is a 5-star book in its methodology and clever software development. If you are looking for an "how-to" book in a shooping cart this book is way over your head, and will have a massive learning curve. The book is made to be read from cover to cover to fully get the value of it (if you skip the chapter on CMP,or example, you are just wasting yout time after). The first cool thing about it, is the clever CMP programming methodology for .NET. If you are coming from the Java world of Beans you will clearly not be impressed with it, but for .NET users this is a big thing), the second cool thing is the interesting use of reflections within the CMP to build self discovering object. I would say this is the first time I see a practical example of use of reflection at this level in many years of developing Web applications.
The book is clearly not for begginners. Without having a good grsp of C# concepts such as: abstract object oriented programming and .NET Reflections, this book it would turn to be a waste of time. For those understand the methodology in it, the book is a treasure. If you'd be able to program so thorougly and sistematically as Hoffman's describe it, you will go far in life.

This book provides extensive documentation for a sample e-commerce Web site, but not much in the way of instruction. It is more of a "Look, here's how I did it"-book than a "Look, here's how you do it"-book. If you're a beginner, this book will go WAY over your head. It was written for those already well-versed in VS.NET/C#/ASP.NET and are looking for some guidance to put their skills to use in creating an online store.

The book doesn't provide much help even to install its own sample code. First, you have to look around very hard to find the source code to download (it is no longer in wrox.com). Second, the database is for restore to SQL Server 2000 only. It doesn't provide any kind of script file that I can make little modify to install it to a SQL Server 7 or MSDE 2000. You will be stuck if you don't have SQL Server 2000 installed. Third, the source code installation is not a install and run, I have to do some change to be able to opetn the solution.

I think that this book as a whole is a good book, except for the fact that the graphics were done only in orange. At a business stand point I thought it gave a good representation of the material. I thought that the material covered was covered well. Although there was times when I didn't understand what the authors were trying to say because the layout was difficult to understand. Another critizium that I have is that there was no pictures. I now that this is an upper level material but some people also learn by visualization like me and to see a representation of the material would be helpful.

Hill and Jones have written an excellent book on strategic management. The key element, the importance of exploiting Distinctive Competencies based on Efficiency ,Quality, Innovation, and Customer Satisfaction in order to achieve Competetive Advantage, is demonstrated througout his book in his concise and to the point cases, which are all recent experiences of well known players. Its final case study is a practical and powerful way to ensure that his concepts are understood

This book was written to take up the time of the everyday student. Because of poor grammar and lack of logical ways of wording sentences, it takes twice the time to understand what the author is trying to say. The cases, however, were helpful in understanding the material presented in the chapters.

This book has lots of nice photographs. That is all. The technical section consists of two pages which state that a waterproof membrane is needed between the roof structure and the soil. There is no information of a technical nature in the book. I wonder why use up the earth's resources for no value. An absolute waste.

GREEN ROOFS: ECOLOGICAL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION advocates the construction of 'green roofs' which can reduce energy demand and protect wildlife, packing in a survey of buildings and communities already using such roofs to their advantage. Some forty case studies of these projects pair color photos of roofs around the world with discussions of sustainable development and project management: thus practical applications appear alongside environmental advocacy. Experts also discuss technical requirements and history, which will please working architects. An excellent survey of working green roofs and their appeal.

As a very vocal proponet of green or living roofs I love this book. I believe that Mr Collum, previous reviewer must have just looked at the pictures. Pages 9 through 23 tell very well why we should have green roofs. If you are already an advocate or a newbe to green roofs, this book is for you. There is not a lot of technical information here but it gives the bare bones. If everything you needed to know about green roofs was here you couldn't lift the book. This book is ment to inspire you to get behind green roofs and advocate them in your neighborhood.

Look elsewhere for technical info

Perhaps some of the previous reviewers liked it because they use it for inspiration when designing at the very high visual level -- because really, this book is about pictures.

There is no useful information in the book about the design or construction of green roofs (except a couple of pages in passing).

Want to know more about how to design and construct using membranes, insulation, drainage, soil and gravel? Then look elsewhere.

Want to know more about how to design and construct a green roof on a new versus and existing building? Then look elsewhere.

How about planning the maintenance needed for a green roof whilst at the design and construction phase? Again look elsewhere.

One of the Best Books I've Had the Pleasure of Discovering.

Review Date: 2006-05-20
This was my first Alice Hoffman book and, hopefully, it won't be my last. If her other books are better than this--as noted below--then I have to be in for a serious treat! Why does the above reviewer have to regard this story as outdated? So are stories like the awful "classic" Catcher in the Rye, but that's okay?

Everyone agrees on one point: the character Minnie is strong, funny, delightfully pure of heart and full of honest conviction, but I found the dark love story of Natalie Lansky and Michael Finn equally moving and with a sweet ending full of promise. I was too young to understand the era from which stories like this came, but found the characters touching and the story involving to the end. Sure, Natalie was a horrible therapist, but that was pretty much implied from the first chapter of the book, and her unethical conduct with Finn only pointed that fact out more. Beside that, if you've ever seen the awful movie The Morning After, the novel looks a lot better in comparison. Knowing something about the era in which this book was written and regarding it as a historical period piece would most likely help increase your pleasure with this particular work.

I have read a number of Alice Hoffman's books and consider her work "high quality brain candy" - easy to digest but more thought provoking and interesting than a lot of the bestseller junk. Angels Landing was a quick read, but disappointing. I thought the characters, particularly Finn, were contrived and predictable. They all felt like caricatures. On the other hand, I can't be too hard on the book ... I did read it through in an afternoon.

I recently picked up Here on Earth and was really impressed. So I rushed out to get more Alice Hoffman books. I picked up Turtle Moon, Angel Landing, and The Drowning Season. I dove into Angel Landing and thought, why did I buy these?

After the intense characters in Here On Earth these characters were pretty blase. Finn was a bit textbook for my taste. I think we were supposed to base all of his adult behavior on his childhood woes and that just doesn't work for me. The only one I really liked was Minnie. She was quirky but had a real heart and conviction for things.

I am disappointed that I didn't get the good vocabulary in this book. I like to be challenged as a reader and I wasn't with this book. It won't keep me from reading another book by Alice Hoffman. There are too many good reviews of her other works to sway me from my pursuit of finding good material to fill my days.

I thot this book was a wonderful way to show once more that love truly does make a family.
All the colors of the rainbow represent the diversity in the world around us. Why should we only be able to pick one, or maybe two colors... celebrate this diversity, don't teach our children to hate. We must teach them to accept all people for their many different attributes and in no way to shun them because they they may have two mommies, or two daddies, or just one mommy and no daddy, etc... children can be cruel to each other at such young ages. Parents do not need to fuel this behavior.
Please read your child this book and start them on the path to celebrating diversity. If this includes going to your annual pride parade, that's wonderful! The pride parade is becoming a great family event for our glbt community. It's turning into less and less of an event with topless grrl bikers and men in leather sm gear and becoming an exibit of the groups in the community that support each other and their families. It's truly a celebration of community acceptance and pride.

Hate is not a family value, please love your neighbors and read your children this beautiful book.

I was very pleased to find a book that shares a realistic point of view about families. Not only is this a child of african american heritage, this child also has a same sex family. I was pleased to see that families like these are not just ignored. This is a great book for children being raised in same sex families. It is also a great book for children in conventional hetrosexual families to help them see that gay and lesbian families are very much the same as their own.

One of the other reviewers wrote "I want to make it clear to anyone considering buying this book what you are buying. This child has two mothers as parents and the book ends with them all going to a "pride parade"." - I actually said aloud after reading this review "And?!". This book is a fantastic educational tool for children - the perfect way to teach kids that not all families are the same and that's ok! I heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to bring up a well balanced child - who doesn't discriminate against other children - just because their family is different.

I have to say that I expected more out of this book. History is my worst subject, so when I bought this I was hoping for way more review and in-depth explanation of different topics and time periods. I also thought the practice tests were too easy; I went in thinking that I'd do great on the multiple choice, and instead found myself guessing quite a bit. However, the tips for taking the exam were great, except their advice on the DBQ format; they were so convinced that the question would be worded a certain way that they didn't include any examples of other formats! Sure enough, the DBQ was worded completly different! Overall, I'd recommend this to someone who already has a firm grasp of US history, but not someone like me who needs a much more thourough review.

The writers of Cliff's AP books are usually great but here I feel they failed. Their AP Biology book was great as to resumming all learned about the subject but this one did not enumerate. It has basic people, events, and topics but no memory joggers. ;( for me I needed review of data rather than HOW to take the test.

Helped me on both the AP Exam and SAT II

I am a history-buff, but before the AP exam, I needed confidence. So I took 2 practice tests and wrote some essays, and the result was a 5 on the AP exam. In June, before the SAT IIs, I took another exam from this book and that was my only preparation, because we did nothing in class. This book helped me get a 750 on the SAT II. However, there's not much "review" in this book. For review, I recommend the Princeton Review which some of my friends had. But buy this book too, b/c TPR has only one practice exam.

This book is delightful presented as well as informative due to the very artistic and funny bone tickling illustrations. The author is obviously writing about something he has done many times and holds especially dear to his heart. There are two "loves" in this book - the rewarding pleasure of canine companionship enhancing the awesome grandeur of outdoor experience. A joy to read!

thanks for the help

This book helped me so much the last time I went camping. I was always so scared to bring my dog with me...too many variables. My friend told me about this book and that it might help. It told me everything I really needed to know in a simplistic way. Gary Hoffman didn't make me feel any less intelligent for my lack of knowledge about camping with my dog. I got all the information I needed and the trip was a success. Next time I just might stay longer!

Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful...

Gary Hoffman's book, Hiking With Your Dog, is extremely helpful when backpacking with the family dogs. I consider myself a well informed person, but having information available in print is invaluable. It's not always easy to keep your facts straight while dogs bark, children yell and husbands fish. I would have liked even more information. I'm not concerned about typos. Content presented in a concise and simple manner, to me, means the difference between a wonderful camping trip and a disaster.

No so bad

This is the first "Dog hiking"-book I've seen that has something for the more difficult situations. The book has even short chapter about things like fording and bouldering. It still has the basics too.

No photos, just drawn pictures. Not very informational ones, except the ones about first aid.

Good book, but a bit short. Especially if you do longer, overnight hikes in difficult terrain. LaBelle's book "Guide to backpacking with your dog" is definetly better if you do shorter walks that last only a day. If you decide to buy it, avoid 1st edition. The 2nd edition is definetly improved version.

Poorly written, unhelpful

This is a very disappointing book. Almost anyone with dog experience and an 8th grade education could do a better job. The author states in his foreword that he makes no apologies for spelling or grammar mistakes. No excuse! There are errors of punctuation, grammar, and spelling throughout. This might be excusable if the information were of any help, but it's not. About 80% of the information is self-evident, 19% is speculative personal opinion, and only 1% is anything I was unaware of (and I'm not exactly a dog expert). The number of pages is misleading, as there are many blank pages or pages with almost no text, silly cartoons, or big type. The material could fit into about 20 pages of double-spaced text.

Don't waste your money on this book! I recommend Charlene Bell's book instead.
