There is a terrible glut of misinformation on BPD. Many books on the subject are seriously flawed, and the Internet is worse than useless. Searches for BPD are more likely to reveal "hate sites" put together by estranged ex's than anything with a scholarly or clinical basis.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone affected by this terrible disorder. It is balanced, readable, and based on the best available research. Gunderson and his co-authors discuss the nature of BPD and treatment options without demonizing either those who suffer from BPD or those who care for them.

"The Wisdom of Carl Jung" brings together highly readable excerpts from the extensive writings of one of the world's most influential psychologists, logically arranged into such themes as Creativity and Genius, Understanding the Human Psyche and Education, Social Change and World Improvement. A comprehensive biographical essay at the start of the book provides perspective on Jung's far-reaching ideas on mysticism, sexuality, religion, fantasy, successful living and other topics directly relevant to our own emotional and personality growth.

Edward Hoffman has made Carl Jung available to us all. He has taken the heart and soul of Jung's written insight and presented it to us in easily understood and digestible aphoristic-like paragraphs that reveal the awesome visionary genius, of this great psychologist.

Editing a thinker like Jung is no small task. Like a sculpture, Hoffman's editing brilliance is revealed in his astute knowledge of cutting away the unnecessary material leaving us only with the beautiful form and substance of the work. He has managed to dish up to the reader the wonderful beauty of Jung's truly impressive and liberating wisdom.

This is the best introduction to the work of Carl Jung that has ever been written. An awesome collection of psychological insight, well ordered and easy to read. I give this book my highest recomendation. It is destined to become a classic.

Just like the skilled behavior researchers try to study, being able to conduct a good Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) is a critical skill in itself. Up until now, it was also one that had to be developed by trial and error. This text breaks it all down and provides a wealth of details on the techniques used and challenges faced in conducting a CTA. It also provides some historical context on the study of cognition and the role of CTA in research and system design.

Highly recommended for anyone in the field - I only wish it had come out sooner.

This is an important book for the engineering of complex systems and information technology systems. Cognitive systems engineering methods described in this book can go a long way toward helping engineers overcome the pervasive problem of inadequate requirements in the development of these systems, unite human and technology concerns in system design, and produce systems that are usable and helpful.

The book makes cognitive systems engineering and its methods much more accessible and comprehensible than any resource I've previously encountered. The book makes the methods described accessible to the novice who has never used them, while also providing details of interest to people who have experience using the methods. For example, it includes a very practical, descriptive, and well-organized walk-through of the cognitive task analysis process that extends from preparation all the way through to its contributions to system design and evaluation.

The book also includes a primer on cognition geared toward the systems developer and which is arguably an important foundation for anyone involved in developing technology that interacts with people performing cognitive work (e.g., information processing, decision making, anomaly detection, troubleshooting,...). The book addresses cost factors associated with cognitive task analysis and other cognitive systems engineering methods (and describes what cognitive systems engineering is and is not - thank you!) throughout, and is full of examples used to demonstrate how cognitive systems engineering methods have been successfully used in the past.

Every systems, human factors, and software engineering student and practitioner needs to read this book!!

This is a really helpful book. I've read quite a bit about Naturalistic Decision Making and CTA's so I was already familiar with most of the concepts. As with any relatively complex subject there is often a large gap between what's in the textbooks and how things actually happen in the field. This book is much more of a "how-to-do-it" guide than any others I've read. It is a very easy read and an excellent introduction to the subject.

Cognitive Task Analysis

Review Date: 2006-11-18
Gary Klein and his colleagues have been studying for many years what kinds of mind-sets different jobs need, and this book reports on how that field of study is shaping up. A methodology has been developed, wherein investigators study knowledgeable workers (experts) to get the skills baseline, then write up a (series of) template(s) on their findings, whereupon these templates become teaching guides for new recruits.

This book gives a number of case studies of all phases of CTA projects. Even before interviews begin, there is a Preparation phase, wherein the CTA practitioners learn enough about the job, profession, and field of work so that they can ask intelligent questions and recognize relevant answers. Then Knowledge Elicitation follows, through interviews, questionnaires, brain-storming sessions, etc., usually involving two analysts, one to lead the enquiry, the other to record the results.

In the Analysis phase the results are collated, correlated, and represented in some graphical or tabular form so that the pattern of cognitive capabilities and their inter-relations can be depicted and understood. The patterns that may emerge include Hierarchical Task Analysis (the task logic of entailment and subsumption), and Procedural Task Analysis (the linear and concurrent sequence of activities), and these may be represented with Skills Lists, Mind Maps, Dimensional Distributions, etc.

The motivation to engage in this type of analysis is often the need to train new recruits more proficiently or replace retirees more efficaciously. So Cognitive Training is a very important part of the exercise, and the findings must be interpreted in such a way as to facilitate this process. Instructional Analysis is therefore based on the previous findings, and both the content and the process of training are improved as a result. In the Knowledge Society this is by far the most sensible approach to training. How many of the Knowledge Working Skills are analyzed, formalized, and instructed in this way? Not nearly enough so far - not even in Learning Facilities or Knowledge Factories - but it is a waste of time, money, and effort to train in any other way, so we can hope that CTA is the wave of the future!

Review Date: 2006-12-14
The authors described the What, Why, When, Where and How of Cognitive Task Analysis from multiple aspects. One aspect concerns analyzing the cognitive tasks of incumbents in a situated setting. Another aspect concerns analyzing the cognitive task content of an envisioned role in a foreseen situation. Another aspect concerns analyzing the cognitive tasks of those who research cognitive task analysis methods, aids and tools. Another is analyzing the cognitive tasks involved in reflecting on and improving oneself as a practitioner of cognitive task analysis. Yet another is the challenges that must be mastered by educators of cognitive task analysis practitioners. The versatility and value of Cognitive Task Analysis was thusly demonstrated without causing the reader undue confusion. A significant, complex task well done.

Working Minds brings the `intuitive' aspect of decision into focus with the `rational' aspect. This is one, very large contribution. A small disappointment was the absence of teleonomics and its relationship with cognitive task analysis. Also, perhaps a sequel will say more about principles and rules for selecting human vs. automatons during a system design activity.

As computers in general and process formalization in particular encroach further into our lives and as litigation looms larger over those who cannot show that they exercised due process in their work, cognitive task analysis becomes basic, foundational, in business, government and academia. Working Minds helps discover how to lay such foundation.

Remembering beyond the survivors.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-30
As the Holocaust passes further into history so are the survivors. The direct memories are being replaced by stores, books, museums. The author is a child of Polish Jews who survived the Holocaust with the help of neighbors, but whose entire families perished. She investigates the historical, psychological and moral implications of the second generation experience. How do you maintain an authentic version of its events.

It would be nice to say that the Holocaust was a unique experience in world history. And in some ways, its magnitude, and its mechanistic operation. Perahaps even more so with its publicity and the presence in our society. Unfortunately with Pol Pot's followers in Cambodia and the horribly named ethnic cleansing in the Balkans and several countries in Africa it isn't unique.

Eva Hoffman's book-length meditation on the Holocaust, written from her perspective as a daughter of survivors, is beautifully written. Her well crafted sentences reveal the careful thinking she has done as she ponders how her generation, born into sunny safety after the horrors their parents had known, has viewed those events that cast a shadow over their parents' lives.

Hoffman is highly intelligent, well educated, with broadbased understanding of the atrocities, the loss and the uprooting, the courage to begin anew, of those who emerged from the camps. She perceives the ambiguous borders between victimhood and dangerous resistance, the fateful choices her parents faced on a daily basis.

Her book is a highly valuable contribution to a world where conditions of genocide still exist.

The second generation reflects on the Holocaust
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-06
This profound work is a reflection of a member of the ` second- generation' on the Holocaust. It contains a detailed and moving description of the whole experience of ` learning' that the second- generation goes through. It describes the particular burdens including ` significance envy ` that the second - generation lives with. It in the course of this is also a memoir in which Hoffman tells the story of her own parents and family. She describes what it meant to grow up first in Poland, then in Vancouver as the child of two people who had been saved by hiding during the war. There is an extremely interesting section telling of her and her sister's return to their parents native village in the Ukraine, and their meeting with the family who hid them for two years. There are extremely poignant and painful revelations. One is of her father's only near the end of his life describing how he had to alone go out and bury his two beloved brothers killed just near the end of the war when they had apparently been saved.
It is a work written with great intellectual acuity and humane feeling.
The book is so rich in thought and understanding that to quarrel with it seems somehow irreverent. But there is it seems to me a major omission in the work. The work centers on the relationship between the first and second generations. But how is it possible to speak of the Shoah while barely mentioning ` the third generation ` also. For clearly one of the major themes of many of the survivors is the theme of continuity of their own families and of the Jewish people. Here I think Hoffman under-emphasizes one major point about the Shoah. The Nazis aim was to destroy the Jewish people entirely. Therefore for many of the survivors the goal of building new families was strongly connected with the goal of keeping the Jewish people alive. Perhaps this was not so in Hoffman's own family. But it clearly is the case for a tremendous share of the survivors of the Holocaust.

The motion of knowing

In addition to a being a powerful memoir that asks probing questions about the legacy of the Holocaust, this book creates an image of the living nature of knowledge: its origins, its protection, its growth and advance from the private mind into the public domain and beyond- from a private lived experience into public art. I think her vision of knowledge spills beyond the borders of the Holocaust, if such an event can be said to have "borders." This is really a great book.

Those were crazy, foundation-shifting days in the 1970's when all manner of people, ideas and lifestyles were breaking free of closets and shadows and Amy Hoffman was searching to find shelter with a community of like-minded souls. And find that community she did! And bring it back to life she does. In a humorous, irony-tinged portrait of the people and flotsam that floated through and around the waters of the Gay Community News in Boston in the 1970's. This is an enjoyable memoir written by a woman who sees beyond the facade of things, and who can report on them with a sharp-tongued memory. I recommend it for non-gays as well as gays, men as well as women, and for anyone interested in taking a front row seat at a parade of change that will never pass this way again.

It's rare that a book this funny is also crucial reading, but it is, for anyone who wants to know more about the 1970s feminist and/or lesbian/gay movement and its passions and commitments, not to mention anyone who has ever sat through a political meeting or worked in a collective.

Her rich history of working in Boston for a gay newspaper is full of amazing tales, making the book easy to read a bit by bit or straight through. As a younger reader, Hoffman's book helped me to appreciate all of the hard work gay rights activists put in to ensure the freedoms we celebrate today, especially here in Massachusetts.

Roy Hoffman has disproved the theory that you can't go home again. With the turn of each page, I'm transported from central Texas to the city of my birth. His book, BACK HOME : JOURNEYS THROUGH MOBILE, is truly that. My mind journey's to Bienville Square, the Saenger Theater, Toolen High School, The Cathedral, the variety of languages that greeted my ears as I walked with my grandmother down Dauphin Street, the Electric Maid Bakery, whose lemon puffs were to die for, and the Gene and Roy movies at the Century on Saturday mornings. I go back somewhat earlier than Mr. Hoffman in my personal memories. Streetcars, marching in endless parades down Government Street (Catholic schools loved parades), and the beautiful Christmas eve midnight mass conducted by Bishop Thomas J. Toolen. His history of the ferry to Fairhope brought back memories of my parents who "courted" on that ferry. Fairhope was also the site of several family vacations. Floundering in the bay, a one-time Jubilee occurrence, and playing around Battles Wharf are very fond memories. The mention of Grand Bay brought thoughts of cousins who lived there and summer visits complete with catching fireflys, wading in cold creeks and eating scuppernongs from the vine. Mr. Hoffman has accomplished what he set out to do - at least for this reader. For a few days, I can sit on my couch with his book and travel back to a long-ago time and place that I still call home. This is the first of Mr. Hoffman's books that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. And even if you aren't an expatiate of Mobile, you'll certainly be planning a trip to this historical and beautiful city soon. Thanks for a wonderful journey, Mr. Hoffman.

Hoffman explains how so many scientist could have erroneously concluded that cold fusion worked. He describes processes that were heretofore misunderstood and led to the fiasco that became the "Cold Fusion Hoopla." His remarks were right on the money, for as we see five years later, cold fusion has not become the panacea that it was made out to be.

As a daughter of a scientist, I could relate to the skeptics out there who question the theory of whether cold fusion can be proven or if it should actually just be called hoopla as Dr. Nathan Hoffman would say. If so, I could say that after reading this book, you will lay the book down with a strong view of optimism for cold fusion, or perhaps a stronger appreciation for scientific study. Either way, the impact of science regardless in what field will amaze you and leave you hungry for more!!!

Author Hazel Mae Hoffman knows something about adversity and the need for a positive attitude to deal with the stresses that life has for all of us. Hoffman is 54 years old and has had cerebral palsy since birth. It has been her relationship with God, a good attitude toward life, a sense of humor, and her determined spirit that led her to succeed the many trials and tribulations that she has had to endure and work her way through. The lessons she has learned are now shared with others through the pages of Hope & Encouragement For The Overcomer. Easy to read, and offering examples and precepts that will inspire and console, Hope & Encouragement is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal self-help and self-improvement reading lists.

The author allows nothing to stop her from serving God and telling others about His goodness. She was born with Cerebral Palsy and was almost cast away in an instution at the advice of docters who thought she would amount to only a vegetable. This book proves that she is as fresh and healthy as a garden salad chilled and ready to be enjoyed by anyone seeking after something good from God's own kitchen.

Maybe I'm blowing my own horn.

My book is rich with wisdom and understanding from living a life devoted to God inspite of the challenges and circumstances of being born with Cerebral palsy. I accept those challenges without question and I write from the heart about my daily thoughts and experiences with God,family and friends. I apply Biblical principles and teachings to my practical and everyday situations. I feel my book exemplifies (what some call) my contagiously positive attitude toward God and the life He has chosen for me to live. And live it, I do! I hope the book challenges the reader to think and to consider all the wonders, marvels and surprises that God has in store for those that decide to follow Him. Also, I want the readers to never to take the love of our Lord for granted. I feel whoever reads my book will find a God-given surprise of their own. If you read this book --- it WILL change your life.

This daily devotional is awesome. It's written so down to earth that anyone of any age can understand it. The author tells it like it is but while she is doing that she has her own brand of hope and encouragement that she gives to the reader. She never wants you to forget that God loves you or to take that love for granted. Our days, at times are lived helter skelter, but at the end of the day when you read this you are brought right back to where our thoughts are to be and that's with God. It's so hard to read just one day. I found myself wanting to read on. That's why I'm able to review this book so soon. It's amazing how the author can take an everyday little phrase and put a Scripture with it and write a devotional about it. She also does that with situations in her life. She doesn't put herself on a pedestal. She is trying to live a Christian life just like we are and she is in the muck and the mire with us. She makes herself very transparent. I just think the book is great. I would recommend it to anyone.
