Before the rather decent horror stories in this book are three introductory pieces, one by August Derleth, followed by two appreciations of Robert E. Howard. One is by H. P. Lovecraft, a correspondent, and one by E. Hoffman-Price, who actually travelled to Cross Plains to meet him. These are very interesting, and if you are a Howard fan and come across this, especially cheap, grab it and have a look.

Skull-Face Omnibus 1 : Skull-Face - Robert E. Howard

Chinese master villains, Egyptian sorcerers, Atlantean myths, Afghan killers, voodoo, magic elixirs, no wonder Steve Costigan is bewildered. Holey cr@padoley.

Hanging around Spanish noble types is bad for your health. This time, it took a while to work out whether this gentleman Was Don Leopard, or Don Lupin. The latter was the case, and causes quite a few problems.

A Cthulhoid type venture. Not somewhere you want to be. Fairly proficiently done.

If an old priest tells you that the body in the tomb is an undead Spanish nobleman, and you happen to be a credulous cowboy, next time, believe him!

Another reincarnation type horror, with a Norse flavor. Nice to be given necessary supernatural artifacts via the reapparance of centuries dead ancestors, when that happens, that is for sure.

Creepy swamp monsters, of the female variety. Not too bad, the atmosphere is done fairly well.

At long last, an update of So-Called Dollars!

Review Date: 2008-04-19
So it took 45 years but at long last we have the official second edition of the title 'So-Called Dollars.' So-Called Dollars are roughly defined as silver dollar sized medals that are not issued as trade tokens or storecards; by schools, coin clubs, the military or political organizations/candidates and have been issued in at least one form of metal. The first book was issued in 1963 by Messers. Hibler and Kappen and listed 1000 different medals each assigned it owns HK number. A sort of cult arose around the book with many collectors attempting to either collect the book (all but impossible) or sections of it. The medals cover a wide panoply of subjects and many are available for surprisingly little money. The problem was that the book was never re-issued so that used copies often sold for above one hundred. Four intrepid collectors banded together at the behest of the original publisher and produced this updated version in paperback (a hardbound deluxe edition was also offered to private subscribers). This version is far superior to the original because it has been able to locate and photograph many of the medals not pictured in the original, it has added some of the metallic varieties not listed in the original and it has added and amended a lot of critical information on the medals. Now there are likely around 1200 official HK numbers listed which makes the hobby at least 20% more fun. The only two complaints I have about this edition are: The cover is made from flimsy paper that will wear out quickly and the greatly expanded index makes it difficult to search for a specific medal by name. Still, this book is definitely the so-called BOMB and you must own it!

Dr. Hoffman is a master at bringing heavenly matters down to earth. He lets us know that each one of us has a bit of The Divine Fire blazing in our hearts. His message comforts us with the knowledge that The Eternal Being is always at hand, ready to help and sustain us if we only seek His Presence.

Dr. Hoffman's co-author Rabbi Zalman Shachter also writes with warmth and the gentle, sincerity of one who truly wants to share a precious secret with us. His insights ring with the clarity of an authentic spiritual master.

I highly recommend this book to all who truly seek to serve God while living in the modern world. Dr. Hoffman's skill with the written word allows even a spiritual novice to be more mindful of the unique divine path each individual walks through life. This book is truly a Spark of Light.

The key to Spartan gridiron history!

Here is a book that tracks the success and disappointments of the Michigan State University football team from the years 1896-1995. The first "official" team was in 1884, but for some reason it did not compete in any games. Founded as Michigan Agricultural College (MAC), then known as Michigan State College and finally MSU, here is a record of its football teams down thru the ages.

This anthology of football history contains the proud years from the early parts of this century when State fielded some of the finest defenses in all of college football history.

It also pays credence to the 1950s and 60s when MSU was a legitimate national football power. Those teams routinely hammered the likes of Nortre Dame and the university of Michigan. It is no wonder that the enthusiastic Spartan football crowd was used to voice the "war cry" of the gladiator army in the movie SPARTACUS. Those were fervent days in MSU football lore.

The book is also full of a lot of "Did you knows" that only a handfull of sports buffs might be aware of, such as:

Jim Crowley, one of Nortre Dame's legendary "four horsemen" was the head coach of the Lacedamons for the better part of a decade.

Knute Rockne nearly became head coach of the Spartans before Nortre Dame lured him to South Bend.

Barry Switzer almost became the head coach in the early 70s, only to change his mind at the last minute.

Joe Paterno's brother George Paterno, as well as Marty Shottenheimer's son Kurt were both assistant coaches for the Laconians.

For any MSU football fan, this book is a virtual must to have on your bookshelf. From the early days of obscurity thru to the glorious "game of the century" vs ND in 1966 and the victory in the 1988 Rose Bowl, the text is filled to the brim with team photos, stats and an assortment of facts. So buy this book Spartan fans, then get out your highlighter and enjoy!

A book about Maryland folklore

Review Date: 2007-11-13
The Star Spangled Banner was written by Frances Scott Key while on a boat in the Chesapeake Bay near Fort Henry during the war of 1812. S. E. Schlosser blends history and folklore in a compelling story called "Dawn's Early Light", describing the scene of the Fort Henry battle in vivid detail. There are a great many folktales associated with Maryland. Twenty six great stories are included in this book. Several of the stories involve life on the Chesapeake Bay. One I enjoyed wears the title of "Dead Man's Coat", where A waterman finds a coat floating in the Bay and brings it home only to find that the rightful owner a ghost wants it back. "Steal Away Home" is a story about a slave fleeing Maryland trying to reach Canada and the difficulties and risks it took to achieve that goal. The last story in the book "Don't Turn on the Light" should be scary enough for most readers. Overall I enjoyed reading this book very much.

Spooky Massachusetts, featuring witches, a wizard and ghosts

The Salem witch trials took place in Massachusetts in the 1600's. S. E. Schlosser features a retelling of these events in story thirteen called "Madness". The person relating the tale is a witch who was alive at the time and present for the trials. The events are presented in a chronological manner and almost appear to have been taken from a personal diary. The story is quite realistic. I enjoyed reading "The White Wizard", which is about a wizard who helped sailors in the Marblehead area when they were at sea. "Time Warp" tells about the events at Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The speaker is taken back in time to relive part of the battle on the Green. "Dark Portrait", deals with the events surrounding the Boston Tea Party.

The first part of the book features ghost stories, among my favorites are "Hide and Seek", "The Treasure and the Cats" and "The Fireside Chair". Two others that I enjoyed are "The Jewelry Box", where a young couple find a safe place to stay for the night and "Thar She Blows", a tale about a whale hunting ship out searching for whales. All the stories capture your interest and can be read several times without losing their freshness.
