Hoffman Books

The Herbal Handbook by David Hoffmann is a great source of definitions of actions of the most commonly used herbs. Also of interest is the chemistry of plants, the body systems and their recommended herbs, which include methods of preparation for medicinal and cosmetic use.

The incredible amount of information in this book is easy to read. The section on actions is the most comprehensive I have read yet!

This title should be in every Herbalists personal library!

I used this book with a bi-lingual Kindergarten class, and the Spanish speakers were thrilled to find out that the story had lots of Spanish
words. I had them help me with the words and they were so proud that they spoke two languages!

What a great book!

60 excellent hands, some double dummy, where you need to figure out how to play, based on the bidding and an occasional innocuous clue like "after a pause the opponent leads/plays X"

The author explains why the pause was important "why not simply return partners suit, since they are known to have the Q? Unless ..."

No exceptionally hard hands, these can all be solved if you are advanced and think out the play. 2 summary tips after each problem.

One of the best bridge books I've read.

PS the sequel "More Tales of Hoffman" is ok, but not as good

This is by far the best work every on Hitler's secruity and the various assassination plots against him. It's especially strong in the early, seminal years of the Nazi party and there are some extremely rare photographs of Hitler in Munich in the mid to late 20's. Hoffman's research is extensive and he unearths material not found in other books. He relies on primary sources for many of his arguments and these interviews enhance an already strong book. If you have an interest in Hitler's incredible knack in evading assassinations, this is the preeminent book on that subject.

The author, Amy Hoffman, writes about her friend, activist Mike Riegle, with whom she shared a long history of activism in the gay community and elsewhere. When Mike became increasingly debilitated by AIDS, Hoffman agreed to serve as the person to make health care decisions for him, and spent much time helping him negotiate his illness, along with other friends in the gay and lesbian community. I thought this book was great on my first reading of it, but a second reading really revealed to me the concise and intelligent way in which Hoffman artfully delivers the complex and painful truths and ambivalencies of her life and the lives of others. One theme explored in this memoir are the importance of the "created" family of friends in the gay and lesbian world, and how this family is often illegitimized when the "real" family shows up for a crisis...or a funeral. Another has to do with the real difficulties in loving other people,despite your pledges to them, especially when they are demanding and irrational--and they are dying, and you feel that you should be acting like a saint! I found this book particularly meaningful, having recently lost a dear (and complex and difficult)friend to AIDS, and working with feelings of guilt at not having done enough for him, but I think other readers would also enjoy it for many reasons, including its caustic wit, well-articulated rage, innovative narrative structure, and relevance to lesbian and gay lives. I recommend that you buy this unique, original, and affecting book, and encourage the author to keep on writing!
