Marti Beuschlein and Dr. Patricia Hoffman do a wonferful job writing an age appropriate story for young children! Set in rhyme, it keeps children encompassed in the reading process while telling the Easter story. My preschoolers enjoyed the bright illustrations and the simple vocabulary that they could easily identify with. All these careful considerations in writing this book, brought the Easter story to life for my little ones!

This book has some of the most fabulous artwork of all books. If you're not familiar with Jane Ray, you will never forget her amazing style after you see this book or a companion book entitled Sun, Moon and Stars. Mary Hoffman and Jane Ray team up to write and illustrate these books that show how many cultures have interpreted and been inspired by these elements and share myths, beleifs, and legends that reflect their power and influence.

If you have an ERISA problem and don't know where to start..

Ok. I already feel odd writing a review of this book. The anticipated audience is incredibly narrow and if you found this review, you probably know what you are looking for. However, I think this is one of the greatest books. As a law student who is planning on specializing in ERISA, this book has been an invaluable resource to me. It is the first place I turn when I have an ERISA question to research. It won't provide all the answers but puts a very complex statute into perspective. It would also benefit the non-lawyer who might be involved in benefits.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The storyline is clever in its simplicity, and is thought provoking. It makes you understand Kevin's rash act, but also leads you to ponder the interplay of family relationships and responsiblities. The book seems to purposely end on an uncertain note, which again forces you to explore the ramifications of the situation in which the characters find themselves. It is as though the author is inviting you to put yourself in the characters' shoes, and explore what your own reactions would be. Plan on reading this book in one sitting, because the plot keeps pulling you along.

A Masterpiece of Musical Masterpieces for the violin student

It was back in the early 50's that I began taking violins classes. I was then 15 and the violin solos in this book brought me a wide spectrum of a violinist's repertore. The well selected musical pieces for the violin (the 1st and 3rd osition)introduced me to the wonderful world of music and to the great composers of all times. I still have some of these solos memorized and while playing them today I remember the precious album which was part of my adolescence days and which I reccomend for everybody who really want to improve their musical taste..

Family Therapy At The Turn Of The Century
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-22
Part memoir, part text, this collection of Hoffman's writing will
provide practitioners and psycho-historians trying to decipher and
understand the cultural contributions of family therapy with their own
version of the Rosetta Stone. Exchanging Voices offers readers a map
of key concepts and theories that will guide our thinking and
practices into the 21st century. Although a completely seperate
effort, this book is a kind of sequel to family therapy's other
flagship (also authored by Hoffman), Foundations of Family Therapy. In
Foundations of Family Therapy Hoffman presented all the major
developments and types of practice that have taken place in the
profession in the last half century (e.g., systems thinking,
cybernetics, structural family therapy, etc.). In Exchanging Voices
she points out what I've come to think of as the "cracks in the
foundation" that have resulted in our seeking new voices and more
collaborative models of practice that put the voices of our clients
before the voices of our theories. Ironically, driving this shift in
thought and approach to the work are some very complex thinking and
erudite concepts that fall under tent terms with names like narrative,
constructivism, social contstructivism, and social constructionsim. An
alternative title for this volume could be Postmodernism: A
Biography. Hoffman unpacks the history of the ideas and events that
brought postmodern thinking and concepts into the therapy
arena. Documenting its migration from philosophy, biology, literary
critisism, cultural anthropology, and other disciplines Hoffman
provides the best interpretation and commentary available in print on
the ideas of such heady thinkers as Foucault, Bateson, and Maturana
and Varela. I was as an assistant intstructor for a course taught by
physicist Herb Bernstein at Hampshire College called New Ways Of
Knowing: Reconstructive Knowledge In The Physical And Social
Sciences. Students unanimously voted Hoffman's book the most helpful
resource we provided them on the topic of postmodernism. Balancing
this intellectual adventure in Wonderland or down, what Hoffman calls,
the "Rabbit Hole," is a close personal account of the effect
these ideas have had on Hoffman's own practice and relationships with
her clients. It is this personal touch (each paper is punctuated with
a short autobiographical essay by the author) that makes this book
unique. In spite of the wealth and breadth of information passed on,
the reader is not overwhelmed-- far from it. After putting this book
down you will feel like you've spent an afternoon sitting at your
kitchen table laughing, crying, telling stories, and exchanging voices
with one of the most brilliant thinkers in our field, and maybe our
time.

Ed Hoffman, eyewitness to a part of the JFK assassination in Dallas, details his experience on Nov. 22, 1963. With a clear view to the parking lot behind the Grassy Knoll, Hoffman describes an unknown gunman, conspirators and a "puff of smoke" from an assassin's rifle. Maps and photographs are included. If Ed Hoffman is right, the Warren Commission is wrong. An excellent source for all who desire the truth of Dealey Plaza and the JFK assassination.

I have read hundreds of historical mysteries and this one is top notch. Once I started it, I did not want to put it down. The main protagonists are Silvano, who has sought sanctuary in a Franciscan Friary after being accused of a murder he did not commit, and Chiara, who is forced to enter a neighboring convent because her family does not have the money for a dowry. The supporting characters are very interesting too. The lively plot could be described as Shakespeare meets Brother Cadfael. The fascinating details about color-making and fourteeenth century art brought back happy memories of my visit to the Basilica of St. Francis several years ago.

When a horse neighs
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-26
Edna Hoffman Evans tells the stories of 21 horses. All 21 were famous in their day. Some of them have passed the test of time. Some of them are still known to us today. For it really was a case of FAMOUS HORSES AND THEIR PEOPLE. Not only were they famous, but their owners were too.

Actually, in the case of one, Incitatus, the owner was the infamous Caligula! But as far as we can tell from history, there was nothing wrong with the Emperor's horse. But that same history has also left us dangling in regard to Incitatus. We have no idea what happened to him after Caligula was assassinated. The one thing we know is Incitatus didn't become Consul, one of the highest offices in the Roman Empire.

The author makes a good choice of horses. For each horse was successful. With each horse, the reader realizes whenever history was being made a horse was there. For example, Babieca carried his owner, El Cid campeador, through many important battles against the Moors. In a way, as models of just not giving up on what they wanted, they set the groundwork for the free Spain of today. Likewise, Alexander the Great set the groundwork for people interacting with each other beyond country borders. He traveled from Macedonia all the way to India. He was able to do so because of his brave, strong horse. For Bucephalus was afraid of nothing except his own shadow!

All of the horse stories are compelling. There's not an unlikeable horse in the bunch. We get to know the entertaining Charlie and Buffalo Bill, Fritz and actor William Hart, and Tony and actor Tom Mix. We get to know horses of history, such as Morzillo and Hernan Cortes; Raksh and Prince Rustum; and Sharatz and Prince Marko. We get to know record-setters Gato and Mancha, for endurance; Man O'War, for racing; and Revelation, for harness. We get to know warhorses Comanche of Gen George Armstrong Custer's last stand; Copenhagen and Marengo of the duke of Wellington and Napoleon respectively at the battle of Waterloo; Old Whitey of Gen and President Taylor; and Rienzi and Traveller of Gens Sheridan and Lee respectively, on opposite sides of the war between the states.

But in a way my very special stories are those of Exterminator. He was unexpected. He became a race winner. And he doted on the company of two ponies, known as Peanuts and Peanuts II. He showed how sociable horses are. There's also the story of Justin Morgan. It's so inspiring how that horse worked so hard for everyone who came into his life. And he's the only horse in history to have founded his own line. And finally, there's Pegasus. What's not to like about a winged horse?
