Thi book is written so lyrically and accurately that it reinvigorates why I became a doctor. The illustrations and photoraphy are excellent. The medical reasoning and depth of knowledge of the authors is extraordinary. This book is a must in any radiologists library. No matter how many years one has practiced in this area one can learn something new from this book.

A profound reflection on the Shoah- with a critical omission
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-06
Review Date: 2005-05-06
This profound work is a reflection of a person of the ' second generation' the Holocaust. It contains a detailed and moving description of the kinds of ` learning' the children of survivors have gone through . It describes the particular burdens including ` significance envy ` that the second - generation lives with. It in the course of this is also a memoir in which Hoffman tells the story of her own parents and family. She describes what it meant to grow up first in Poland, then in Vancouver as the child of two people who had been saved by hiding during the war. It is a work written with great intellectual acuity and humane feeling. And its reflections on various themes related to the Shoah, such as emigration, or ' collective memory ' are deep and insightful.
The book is so rich in thought and understanding that to quarrel with it seems somehow irreverent. But there is it seems to me a major omission in the work. The work centers on the relationship between the first and second generations. But how is it possible to speak of the Shoah without speaking of ` the third generation ` also? For clearly one of the major themes of many of the survivors is the theme of continuity of their own families and of the Jewish people. Here I think Hoffman under-emphasizes one major point about the Shoah. The Nazis aim was to destroy the Jewish people entirely. Therefore for many of the survivors the goal of building new families was strongly connected with the goal of keeping the Jewish people alive. Perhaps this was not so in Hoffman's own family. But it clearly is the case for a tremendous share of the survivors of the Holocaust. And thus surely one of the major questions for second- generation people is their own ' duty' to bring a ' third- generation into the world.
I again want to emphasize the great value of this work. This review has not even touched upon most of its themes.
I have been reading it through ' Yom HaShoah' in Israel and I will just add one thought here. And this I think is something that Hoffman also mentions. And it is how ' ungraspable ' the horror is, how ungraspable the immensity of the destruction, how ungraspable too the Evil of the perpetrators, and how ungraspable the fact that so many of the survivors did manage to make ' new lives'.
This work in a way is a work of tribute by a child of survivors to those who did manage to somehow, living with all the nightmares and taking them with them to the grave , make new lives.

Confronted by her own feelings of helplessness in the face of aging and ill health, Patricia Hoffman, a longtime activist and writer on justice issues, felt drawn to spend time with AIDS patients. AIDS and the Sleeping Church is her personal journal, kept when she visited Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital at Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles. These journal entries take us beyond the continuing stigma attached to AIDS patients, helping us to hear their words, to learn how some of them lived well in the face of death, and, most important, to experience the sacred value of who they were as individuals. In the process, Hoffman not only reveals profound spiritual insights for our own lives but also sensitively bridges the gap between the institutional church's rejection of those infected with AIDS and the need for simple, unasuming acts of love and compassion for those whom God has created.

I read Lynn Hoffman's New Short Course in Wine,The and was impressed. So I went on amazon to see what else he'd written. I was always curious about beer and never really understood it (do they press the hops to make beer or what? why is there rice in some beer and why do they brag about it?). besides, for 49cents, why not?
Anyway, I loved this little book. It explained everything in clear, funny prose and now I'm going to buy his other beer books.

I was looking for a good book, when I stumbled upon this one. I must have read this book within a week for I couldn't put it down. The characters are so real, its hard to believe this is a book of fiction. Almost Family is about A black maid named Nebraska Waters, and her employer Vivian Gold, and thier friendship. It mentions the struggles and joys they share. And the similarities they share, though they are very diffrent. You see their relationship not only through them, but through their children and through their acts to one another while overcoming a world of prejiduce. Its a book with vivid images and plots. The ending surprised me, but I was not ashamed. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a book that gives a detailed explenation of what life was like in the deep south, during the Civil Rights movement.

The entire Prentice Hall Science Explorer series is fabulous! Each book covers a particular topic in great detail - loads of vivid pictures, easy to use layout and links to the Prentice Hall website for more interesting facts and sites for your child to use.
Each book is approximately 1/2 inch thick and has about 200 pages. Important information is high-lighted, key words and concepts are indicated in advance and small quizzes are included for each section of each chapter. Perfect for teaching kids how to find the useful information within the chapter.
My child used these books in 6th and 7th grade and we don't have a single complaint about them. They are a great resource to have at home - buy the ones that are of interest to your child. That is the great thing - you don't have to purchase a huge text, just the ones you want.

Long on joy and short on perils, this book is full of mathematical excitement. The thirteen chapters, each of which could stand alone as a mathematical essay, describe some of the most fascinating problems in pure and applied mathematics. Although some of the problems have remained unsolved for centuries, the book is so well written that even someone who has never heard of the problem will have no trouble understanding it or the solution.
The first three chapters deal with number theory, and the accent is on the use and limitations of computers in solving problems. Emphasis is placed on the famous cattle problem of Archimedes, which is the source of the book's title. Chapter four deals with cryptography and explains some of the historical consequences of faulty codes. The famous Beale ciphers are explained in detail.
The large egg pictured on the cover is the topic of chapter five, with extensive forays into the tiling of surfaces. Of particular interest is the fact that the topic of the first paper of James Clerk Maxwell was the construction of true egg shapes. The computer solution of the famous four-color problem is covered in chapter seven, with new directions in the use of computer graphics cited.
Turing machines and NP complete problems along with the possibility of a combinatorial explosion are the topics of chapters eight, nine and ten. Particular emphasis is placed on the chess-playing computer. Chapters twelve and thirteen deal with the mathematical flaws in the search for a perfect democratic system. Whether contrived or from history, the examples are fascinating and at times counter-intuitive.
An excellent source of material for anyone researching an essay in mathematics, this book deserves a place in all libraries.

Good Questions to begin and further your relationship

Dr. Hoffman's format, I admit, is a bit cheesy in appearance, but is perfect for the "journal" type. My now husband of 3 years and I (neither of us "journal" types) enjoyed the questions in this book for getting conversations started that may have been difficult. The result for us is easier communication. We occasionally use it now, as there are some questions that you may not know the real answer to until after you are married OR your answers may change after you are married. Enjoy this book. It is a very usable one, compared to the other psychobabble garbage out there telling you how you must live your relationship.
