My daughter is just learning to read, so she can manage only the simplest text when reading a book herself. However, she still wants a good story that will hold her interest. "Nine Men Chase a Hen" was the perfect combination of silliness and simplicty for her to both manage the book on her own and to enjoy the aburd text and illustrations.

This book is a treasure. My 8 yr. old daughter danced in the Nutcracker Suite Ballet and I got this book for her in place of the traditional flowers for her outstanding performance and she LOVED it and has read it several times over. The art in the book is beautiful and it is truly an heirloom book to be handed down for generations.

This book is full of useful reminders, tips and approaches for bringing new life and understanding into your relationship. Very accessible yet profound insights arise through the stories shared from the authors' experience with couples they have worked with, followed by pithy commentaries. The subtitle is "A Relationship Reader," good for a thorough reading or just to pick up from time to time as a refresher or a sourcebook of new ideas.

A friend referred me to this book. Excellent read w. very practical advice. I like the writing as it's not to heady - very straight forward. Kind of book I'll read over & over knowing I'll learn something new everytime. Must read for anyone in a serious relationship.

This is an awesome book. My kids (4,6,9,11) were not at all interested in science, but once I propped the book up and started with a simple experiment (vinegar and baking soda!) they were intrigued and inspired to want to try other experiments. We've even picked up Volumes 2 and 3. I highly recommend it for all ages.

This is a very user friendly book to encourage a child's love for science. Based on hands on projects, it makes a child not only participate but see science happen before their very own eyes! This is one of the best books for teaching younger children to explore and use their thinking skills. It also uses basic materials that most households have on hand, which is always a plus.

A vivid and almost daily account of a missionary in Africa

I was recommeded this book by an evangelist before I went on a 2 week trip to Malawi, Africa. Boy was it a good and fast read. There are so many things that he mentions in his book that you would never know or comprehend unless you you were actually there. But more than that, his heart for Africa is so powerfully illustrated that you begin to develop a heart for Africa also.

A vivid picture of bustling nations

A Passion for Africa is a missionary's memoir of his final travels into the interior of Zambia, as well as visits to Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Angola. Presenting a vivid picture of bustling nations with their fair share of problems, including floods, famines, fuel shortages and roaming so-called war veterans, A Passion for Africa tells of one man's striving with his soul, his unheeded call for more missionaries to come and assist his work, and the day when he must tell all the African people he has come to know and love goodbye. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this compelling firsthand testimony.

Pig Out and Enjoy

If you live in Iowa . . . or. . . if you have a pig farm. . . or if you earn your living from the pork industry. . . or if you just plain get a kick out of pigs, then buy this book and read it to your young children.

Alphabet books can be boring, simple, intriguing, and/or tell a story. This one tells a story. It seems that a family of pigs gets together each summer for a pignic. (Don't we all?) And, ironically, the family has a pig with a name from each letter of the alphabet. More intriguing, each of them brings a food to the pignic that begins with the same letter as their name. Isn't that great?? They can remember Cousin Karl's name because he brought ". . . pickled kumquat mousse" to the event. Enjoy the fun.

I love this book and so do the children in my 1st grade class! The illustrations are whimsical and detailed enough to hold the children's interest when they "read" independently. There is one short sentence per page (For example: Ray steamed pots of rice.)so that young readers can build reading confidence with this book. If you are a fan of alphabet books, pigs, and/or food (after all, it is an accounting of a "pignic" ), you will enjoy this book!

Open a wonderful new world, and then enjoy conserving it
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-24
Despite the significance of the subject matter, there are few widely available publications dedicted to pollinator conservation. Fortunately, staff from America's leading invertebrate conservation organization have filled the void with this wonderful book. The handbook is comprehensive in coverage; from its introduction to pollination and pollinators, the threats these insects face, and the actions that can conserve them. These aspects are all covered quite well in a very readable manner, which is not an insignificant fact, because the book is applicable to such a wide audience, from the land managers of National Parks to backyard gardeners. The color photos illustrations are not only splendid close-ups of insects and flowers, but images of the places that pollinators live, everyday sights that readers will recognize, and thus realize the ample opportunities there are for all of us to conserve these insects and the benefits they bestow upon us. Few individuals have the opportunity to be in distant lands furthering the conservation of whales and tigers, but with this very reasonably priced handbook, everyone can in their own way participate and enjoy maintaining the equally, dare I say even more important, richness and health of the special place where they live.

Got Pollinators?

If you're not sure, want to attract more, are a home gardener, restorationist, or simply care about nature you will want to read this book. It is the first of its kind: a simple, well-written and comprehensive handbook all about pollinators. Not just butterflies and bees, but some flies, moths, beetles and others that you may not have considered.

Did you know that pollinators are responsible for two-thirds of the food in the US; that the activity of ground nesting bees improves soil texture, water and nutrient movement; the larval stage of beetles create tunnels in trees where bees can nest; we have approximately 4500 native bees - most of which do not sting?? Do you also know what some of the threats are to both our common, and not-so-common 6-legged friends? They include: habitat loss, degradation & fragmentation, agriculture, pesticides and invasive species. Would you like to know what you, as an individual can do to help such as how to build your own bee nest blocks and other ways of offering up your property to more of these creatures? The extensive appendices include nectar and host plant lists, educator & family resources and a wealth of information for further reading and relevant organizations.

This is not only a very readable book but also a reference that no gardener or other nature lover should be without. It is written by the experienced and dedicated staff of the Xerces Society, based in Portland Oregon, which is "an international non-profit organization dedicated to protecting biological diversity through invertebrate conservation." Many of the photos are unrivaled!

If you are interested in some other excellent reading regarding many of our often-overlooked pollinators, be sure to read "The Forgotten Pollinators" by Stephen Buchmann & Gary Nabhan.
Enjoy!

Delightful Historical Perspective Of Santa Claus

The author has put together a wonderful book that gives the reader a Santa Claus history & how events of the times were seen in Santa postcards through the years. Santa trade cards, Santa holiday cards, even Santa cards from Elvis, it covers the periods from the late 1800s to the present. Descriptions accompanying all the beautiful illustrations are really interesting, very informative. I really loved this book. Makes a great gift too.

A Wonderful Piece of History & Culture that Saved My Life!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-16
I grew up in PA Dutch Country, and my mother and her family and ancestors were all part of that culture. My mother firmly believed in the power of Pow-Wow and my sister still uses the bloodstone that belonged to my mother to this day. When I was a little girl, my mother and father had a friend, and elderly gentleman, who was a Pow-Wow Doctor. When I was 10, I became very ill with appendicitis and the medical doctors were very worried about me. I had a very high fever and it just wouldn't break. My mother found their friend, the Pow-Wow Doctor, and asked him if there was anything he could do. He reassured my mother and said that he would "work on me" through the night. He did so, and by morning my fever had broken and I was doing much better. The medical doctors were surprised. My mother credits the Pow-Wow with saving my life, not the medical doctors. Her mother (my grandmother) was a lifelong believer in Pow-Wow, and used their services frequently. She herself practiced a bit, but only for herself and her family. My mother also knew a tiny bit, which she used when I was growing up.
This book is a wonderful resource if you are interested in learning about Pow-Wow, I highly recommend it! It won't, alone, teach you to be a full Pow-Wow (you need to be trained by a Hexenmeister for that), but you may be able to use some of the charms to help yourself. Even if you are interested only in the historical and cultural aspects of the book, it is well worth purchasing for your collection. Thank you.

The Backbone of Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Practice

Review Date: 2008-05-23
The Long Lost Friend has been in print since it was first published in 1820. It has survived a lot of editing and cheap paper publication, and still stands as the keystone of Pensylvania Dutch Hex Pratice, in which healings and many kinds of almost miraculous works are acomplished by the use of spoken spells alone. The principel of Hex working is based upon the words of Jesus Christ, who said 'Greater things than this ye shall do. The entire theory of Christian magical practice is given in the book of Mathew, and the spells given in the long Lost Friend and the new translation of Abramelin are those of this natire. It is truly a book that makes the magical side of Christainaity come alive.
