A Quick and Fun Read

This book is a quick and fun read. These are made up of stories which would be very good for telling around a campfire. There are very interesting stories, from the "Nain Rouge," a wicked dwarf whose sighting means disaster for Detroit, to "The Merchant," a story about man shipwrecked at sea, and is rescued by a ghost ship.

A must read for anybody from Michigan, or anyone interested in campfire tales.

A Spooky read, indeed!

A fun collection of spooky folktales retold by the author. The book has some really freaky stories like One Last Head and the Devil's Coach. There are also funny/spooky combination stories like Sam meets Death, in which a practical joke goes wrong, and Followed Me Home, in which a ghost takes a shine to a pretty lady at his funeral and moves into her house!

A story that I personally found thought-provoking was The Staircase, in which we see what happens to a serial killer when he finds himself climbing an endless staircase following his death.

A fun read. Great for campfires or for a relaxing read on the beach.

A highly entertaining book

All the stories in this book are very interesting. It is hard to pick a favorite. I really enjoyed the story entitled "Paul Bunyan and the Witch". This is a really good Paul Bunyan story that I had not heard before. This story by itself is worth the price of the book. The "Nain Rouge" in it's story line mention's a man named "Cadillac," according to the story seeing the Nain Rouge brings bad luck. "The Devil's Coach" is an exciting read about a farmer and two black horses that he purchases. "The Green Lantern" is a story about sailors in a storm on Lake Michigan being rescued by a strange light. There are a number of other stories that are equally well told. Once I started reading this book I found it hard to put down, even the last story a tounge in cheek tale called "Sam Meets Death" was quite interesting with an unusual twist. I recommend this book to anyone interested in folklore.

I'm honest and I am fussy and I am very medical. This is an awesome book that will save you money and worries. This gives you multiple , common, realistic probabilities as to what is wrong , what to look for, when to DEFINITELY call the vet etc.
Short and to the point, it is in my "dog bible trio"--books I will not do without!!Vet on Call is also VERY good, by the same publishers-Rodale.

With 600+ pages, this is a fat book. It must way a ton, but based on the first few pages, it looks real good. It is descriptive, intelligent, and long. I would never have to go to the library again. Ill just look at this book, but only if its for reports that im doing. I only do reports on war stuff, since my other teachers dont give us reports.

Don't buy this book expecting the definitive history of the United States Marine corps. Think of it more as reference book. Every single significant event that a date can be attributed to is listed, in that sense the book is great. But it does not give the reader a true sense of "Esprit de Corps"

Nice!

I loved it. USMC is the ultimate Marine coffee table book for Marines, Marine Corps historians, and Marine Corps buffs. It can be used as a tool to settle arguments or--when the recalcitrant refuse to be convinced--as a formidable weapon!

Everything you always wanted to know about Jewish prayer

If you have never prayed as a Jew - and even if you have - this book is for you. The Way Into Series, designed as a 14 volume introduction to Judaism, hits its stride with this offering. Rabbi Hoffman offers a lucid and compelling reason to pray as a Jew. Going well beyond explaining the prayers (he writes other books about that, such as the My People's Prayer Book series), he explains about the Jews' relationship to God, as expressed through prayer. Rabbis, laity and interested readers who want to know about Judaism and prayer will find this book an indispensible volume.

Great introduction to Jewish Prayer

Several years ago, I had the privilege of hearing Rabbi Hoffman speak at a convention I attended. He was a personable and dynamic speaker and he writes as compellingly as he speaks. Rabbi Hoffman is a Reform rabbi but, he views Jewish prayer from all perspectives, including traditional. He gives compelling reasons to pray as a Jew. Although many of the traditional prayers approach G-d as an anthropomorphic deity (a view of G-d that Hoffman rejects), Rabbi Hoffman nonetheless sees a great benefit to the Jewish liturgy since the traditional service requires that we pray together as a community. This unifying force of tradition makes Judaism the communal religion that it is. Although modern movements in Judaism make some changes to the liturgy to accomodate current understandings of theology, Rabbi Hoffman sees the benefits of traditional Jewish prayer while still supporting changes that are evolutionary, not drastic. A major example is refering to G-d in sexually neutral terms rather than describing G-d as a male.

Rabbi Hoffman discusses the purpose of prayer and the theology underlining it. The book is presented in a manner that is accessible to someone unfamiliar with Judaism. Nonetheless, the book is comprehensive enough to offer new insights to people, such as I, who have an extensive background in Judaism. Here is an example of something I learned. I thought that Conservative Judaism was formed to be in the middle between the traditional orthodox movement and the liberal reform movement. Actually, Reform was formed by German Jews and the less formal eastern European and Russian Jews were looked down upon by the upper class German Jews. Accordingly, the eastern European Jews, in breaking with orthodoxy, wanted a liturgy that was less formal and churchlike than the reform liturgy. Thus, conservative Judaism, although in fact in the middle of the other two movements, was actually formed by one ethnic group of Jews in reaction to another.

This book is very readable and, I believe, treats all three major movcements in Judaism fairly without playing favorites of one over the other. I recommend this book.

The Way Into Jewish Prayer by Lawrence A. Hoffman (Professor of Liturgy Worship and Ritual, Jewish Institute of Religion, Hebrew Union College) provides the reader with an accessibly informative introduction into the reasons for Jewish personal and ritual prayer, and the manner in which these prayers are performed. The six articulated chapters comprising this superbly presented instructional volume include "God and the Jewish People: To Whom Jew Pray"; "Prayer as Discipline and as Art: How Prayer Works"; "The Synagogue Sanctuary: What's What and Why It Is So"; "The Community at Prayer: Who's Who and What They Do"; "The Ideas of Jewish Prayer: What Matters Most"; and "A Prayerful Person at Home and on the Way: When the Ordinary Can Be Sacred". Enhanced with Notes, a Glossary, Suggestions for Further Reading, and an extensive Index, The Way Into Jewish Prayer is a welcome addition to the growing library of Judaic Studies, and is especially commended to the attention of Jewish and Non-Jewish readers seeking to better understand the traditions, meaning, and role of prayer in Judaism.

This is the most up to date guide that I know of, the closest you can come to traveling with the actual internet in your hands. Grate photos, good descriptions and up to date web sites for more information. Every naturist should have a copy not only for planning your next vacation but also to learn what places are out there. This may not be a complete guide, there never could be, but it is a wonderful reference tool.

Basil Hoffman's new book "Acting and How to be good at it"is clear, comprehensive and a consistently great read for both aspiring and recognized members of the profession. His constant emphasis on precise analysis of the actor's job as shown, for instance, in his observations on Character Study make the book a sound investment in a manual for continuous and profitable use.

This is a wonderful book by one of America's leading character actors.
Clear, funny, honest and easy to read. A great book for the working actor, the non-professional and even just the movie fan. Fascinating
book about the process of acting by a man who's been doing it for years.
You may not know his name but just look at that face! I remember seeing Basil Hoffman with the great Jack Warden and the great Martin Balsam in ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN and watching him jog with the always terrific Donald Sutherland in ORDINARY PEOPLE. But to me, he will always be
one of the joys in the under rated comedy classic, MY FAVORITE YEAR.
Bravo, Basil!

Einstein's longtime secretary (1928-1955) Helen Dukas and Professor Banesh Hoffman who together had written a biography of Einstein here collect some of his correspondance, his very humane replies on a great variety of subjects.
The work is small but it does reveal Einstein's character. His humor and modesty and wisdom are everywhere in evidence. Einstein's writing often has an aphoristic quality, and there are many memorable sayings in the work.
A small sample of them follow:

" As for the search for truth ,I know from my own painful searching , with its many blind alleys, how hard it is to take a reliable step, be it ever so small, towards the understanding of that which is truly significant."

"With fame I become more and more stupid, which of course, is a very common phenomenon. There is far too great a disproportion between what one is, and what others think one is, or at least what they say they think one is.But one has to take it all with good humor"

"Where the world ceases to be the scene of our personal hopes and wishes, where we face it as free beings admiring, asking and observing, there we enter the realm of Art and Science. If what is seen and experienced is portrayed in the language of logic, we are engaged in science. If it is communicated through forms whose connections are not accessible to the conscious mind but recognized intuitively as meaningful ,then we are engaged in art.Common to both is the loving devotion to that which transcends personal concern and volition."

This volume touches upon many sides of Einstein, his humanitarianism, devotion to peace, his Zionism, his sense of the beauty that is to be revealed through the objective understanding of the universe."

The book takes the form of the questions his correspondents asked ( Most often given in paraphrased form by the authors of the book) and Einstein's responses to their questions.

If I had one question to ask him it would be, " How is it that it was given to one human being in one relatively short period of time to totally transform Mankind's understanding of nature? Why do you think that you were the one given this miraculous power?

Throughgoing in pioneering scholarship and artistic in execution, this unique wife-husband collaboration advances the art of oral history, butresses the case for using memory and recognition in histories, and reads like a fine novel. Thanks to Alice's interviewing craft, Howard's rich memories of his varied WW11 experiences are validated. Oral history techniques are thereby improved, and the reader is treated all along to a very good read. Bold in conception, careful in completion, the book will reward all curious about the strengths and limitations of recall and recognition as scholarly aids. This is so great! I have read this to my daughter (2 yrs old) over and over. She requests it by saying "Phut, Phut, Phut", which is her favorite part. We love the opportunities to dramatize sounds, which in turn my daughter mimics. This keeps her interested and enables her to "help me read" the book. Nearly ever page has something she will identify. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
