This is a great follow up to the first "Buzz" book. The pacing is great, the dialogue is crisp and the action sequences are really fun. The dialogue gives a very unique picture into some of the social issues we are facing (southern perspectives, race, etc.). The author builds out the relationship between best friends Top and Benny in a way that makes you think about your best buddies: "Dee Lane nodded in approval at my story. Benny nodded in approval at the parts of the story I left out."

Great read.

Sam Hill is a terrific writer, and very clever. His characters are unique and the story extremely entertaining. I started with Buzz Riff, will now read the first in the series, Buzz Monkey, and can't wait for the next Buzz Book! Buzz on Mr. Hill. Buzz on.

Readers of Buzz Monkey will find more suspense and better flow in this, the second book in the series. The story is rich with detail, well-paced, and never predictable. Here, Top truly becomes a character to root for... You won't want to put it down until you're done.

Sam Hill's move from writing great non-fiction business books (My favorite: "60 Trends in 60 Minutes") to mystery/action books is an upward spiraling success. He said his second book in the "Buzz" series ("Buzz Monkey"; "Buzz Riff") is better. That's no bluff; that's no fluff; that's accurate reporting. "Buzz Riff" is great. A friend made the mistake of starting it late on a week night. SHE had to put it down and wait A WHOLE DAY to get back to it. I started Friday night. Saturday I read straight through (taking time out for those irksome tasks like eating, drinking, breathing) and finished past my bedtime. You don't need no stinking bookmarks with Sam Hill! Where are THE MOVIES? Protagonist "Top" Kiernan's day job is running Polymath, his self-founded facting finding, fact checking business haunted by ex-librarians (with dark sides!) and para-legal types. His night job (often turning into 24/7) is finding and people and things for clients with big bank accounts. This time it's a Confederate flag. And wherever Top--who's got a severe case of adrenaline "buzz"--damage seems to follow--and half the time it's to him! One of the many great lines this time is "Don't you ever have any plans that don't involve Blue Cross/Blue Shield?" And quotes are one of the many side benefits of reading Mr. Hill: amid the hijinks, he relays a lot of great famous quotes, accurately. Among the ones not yet included pertain to this book:
"Eleven on a scale of ten". Jackson Browne. "Redneck Friend".

A great book listing numerous coping strategies through "how it was for me" situations. Often funny, but never patronising, this book deserves to be the subject market leader for a long time to come. The section on bullying is particularly thought provoking. If you want to know what goes on inside a dyspraxic mind this is what you need!

I highly recommend Caged in Chaos because it is a book on Dyspraxia like no other. There are many academic "how to's" regarding this often mis-understood disability, but not one on what it actually is like to be dyspraxic. I really loved the fact that this book gives readers a snapshot into the dyspraxic child's (or teenager's) world. Caged in Chaos sets itself apart from all other books on the subject. How can we really help those with dyspraxia if we don't know what it feels like to walk in their shoes? Also, author Victoria Biggs' light sense of humor is very refreshing. She's an amazing person -- and terrific role model for my dyspraxic son.

This book is fantastic. It's positive, witty and full of practiacal advice for people with dyspraxia and related disorders. It is intelligently and sensitively written. Reading a book by a fellow dyspraxic, who has come through more than most people is really uplifting. Ms Biggs is well informed about dyspraxia. The book is realistic but optimistic about what is is possible for a dyspraxic person to achieve. I congratulate Victoria Biggs.

As the parent of a dyspraxic pre-teen, I have found that while there is an increasing amount of information available about dyspraxia (a.k.a. apraxia), there is not much out there about dyspraxia in older kids and young adults. Not only is "Caged in Chaos" just such a resource, but it provides an insider's point of view, as the author is dyspraxic herself (an extra star for that fact alone.)

In addition to providing many helfpul coping strategies, "Caged in Chaos" also reaffirms that "you are not alone." I lost count of the number of times that that the author mentioned experiences that my child is going through, too. As the general public is largely unfamiliar with dyspraxia, it is quite comforting to know that there are others out there that are sharing similar things.

This book has given us wonderful ideas on how to make her life easier and help her along the way. This is a "must read" for families who have been touched by Dyspraxia.

This is a great book, very well-written easy to understand considering PMBOK is a mystery some times.
It helped me in passing my CAPM in first try.

Only thing missing from this book is sample exams, it has 2 but you will need more to get used to PMI questions.

Very helpful and insighful book. The explanations to the answers to the questions were really helpful. Also, the practice exams on the CD were a big help. Another part of the book that helps is the e-book. However, you can't print out the e-book unless you download .pdf software that will get rid of the non-printing restriction. A bit selfich, is you ask me. But I guess it's a good way to prevent people from reselling the content as a .pdf file.

The PMP Test is an experience in itself. It requires hours of studying and memorizing all the terms, processes, process groups, inputs, tools & techniques, outputs, knowledge areas, and Earned Value Management formulas. This book interprets the PMBOK language into understandable english. It also follows the PMBOK, chapter by chapter, section by section, so it's easy to read the PMBOK and then the book to see what the PMBOK is really trying to say. This was the only textbook I used for studying for the exam. What else can I say, but "I PASSED"!

I have worked as a vocational counselor for many years, and I use this book on a regular basis with my clients as well as with my own family/friends. A nice feature of The Career Portfolio Workbook is that it outlines what you need to do during the process of creating a portfolio, but also recognizes that some people don't have the time to work through the process in a step-by-step fashion. For example, the book has a note in the introduction that if you need a portfiolo in a hurry - say, for an interview tomorrow - you need to read chapters X and Y. With a week to prepare, chapters W, X, Y, and Z should top your reading list. If you have more time, read the whole book.

The directions are wonderful, and allow each person a wide range of flexibility in terms of developing a unique style of presentation. The book includes templates, sample portfolios, and other documents you can modify for your own use.

Highly recommended.

It offers easy to read, true to life examples of what it is really like when your out looking for a job or promotion. The authors base the workbook on how you can set yourself apart from your competition. I was very hesitant at first but gave the career portfolio a try. The step by step directions in the book made a seemingly daunting task quite manageable and rewarding in itself. I put together my career portfolio and have a new confidence in myself that I am sure contributed to landing my new job. I wish I had this years ago.

I found this book to be thoroughly researched and documented. Oaks and Hill have written this book in a way that the reader can understand the legal process of the trial of the alleged assassins of Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith. With many footnotes to back up their research, Oaks and Hill have effectively given the reader a clear picture of the events that led to the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum and the subsequent trial, without getting too carried away with "legalese" language. My complements to the authors on this excellent book!

I recommend this book to anyone who has interest in Trial Law, as well as Mormon History.

A great, objective legal history
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-24
First of all, this is not a Mormon-propaganda book. It is a scholarly work, a study of law. It is an account of the legal proceedings that took place as a result of the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith at Carthage, Illinois in June of 1844. This book makes no attempt to convert anyone to Mormonism--in fact it doesn't even focus on the Smiths. Instead, it critically examines the trial of five men accused of participating in the murder of these two men.

I cannot praise this book enough for its objectivity. The authors remain completely aloof from bias, and focus instead on an analysis of the trial. One should not read this book with the intent of learning every detail about the Smiths' murder. For those interested in knowing about the legal proceedings that followed their deaths, however, this book will be a valuable tool.

This book is an invaluable resource--it unearths many facts and circumstances that I have not encountered anywhere else, and manages to make sense of just what happened inside the Carthage jail on that fateful summer day. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Mormon history.

Highly documented, as are all Mormon writings, it tells what happened at Carthage, Illinois. The murder of Joseph Smith and his brother Hiram told minute by minute, identification of many personalities, and clear reporting of the courst case. The atmosphere and surroundings of this incident has been repeated before and after, within societies that feel threatened by something they do not understand. Reading of this book will bring sorrow to your heart, and a rememberance of Waco and other unfair reactions to supposed threats. Very good book, reporting in detail what happened.

Joseph Smith the Prophet and Martyer
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-10
Governor Thomas Ford came to Carthage. Joseph Smith expressed concern about personal security for Hyrum, Richards, John Taylor.

Why did Governor Ford dismiss Joseph Smiths warnings of danger?
Governor Ford feared increasing numbers of Mormon immigrants in the state of Illinois. Governor Ford feared Mormon control of the political machinery because the Mormon influx represented the possibility of a power shift: new political leaders, democrat controlled state shifting to another party (whigs, republican), and new state laws submitted and ratified by Mormons.

Governor Ford promised the prophet Joseph safety telling him that a state militia would be disposed to ensure the safety of the prophet. The prophet expressed grave concern because of the persistent nature of the anarchist, mobs, or enemies of the prophet too take his life.

The prophet foresaw the incompetency of the militia to protect him correctly. Poor communication and undisciplined military response by the militia suggests they were under order, not to be in the vacinity of Carthage, at the time of the murder of Joseph Smith. Even as the enemy was forming a logistic line and coordinating an attack, the militia did not respond appropriately. The militia seems too have no intelligence or counter offensive plans against an attack.

Did Governor Ford conspire with Thomas Sharp to allow the Marytr of Joseph Smith?

No legal prosecution was charged against the governor, no committee was formed to research foul play, and no confessions record to implicate the governor in the plot. However, Governor Ford had opportunity and motive to assist in the conspiracy.

Joseph Smith was given a hand pistol by a Member during a visit. With it, Joseph Smith shot one attacker in the face, one in the arm, and one in the shoulder. Why were these men not found and brought to trial? What is surprising is the amount of evidence ignored by the court. The court was not following constitution law nor was it following rules of evidence. The court was following common or customary law rules. In fact one man was shot, managed to walk into a tavern, tell his story, and witnesses saw the bandages protecting the bullet wound. The evidence was not used to press charges against these men.

Bracken testified "He saw Wills, Voras, and a man named Gallaher, all wounded on the road between Carthage and Warsaw. The wounds he described matched those mentioned by Daniels - Gallaher was wounded in the cheek. All three men were indicted for the murders of Joseph and Hyrum, but they were never arrested, nor did they appear at the trial." Why were these men indicted? The seems to have usurp constitution law. Additionally, the adversarial forum of the court room broke down as the prosecuting attorney failed to perform competently, a mistrial should have been ordered and a new case submitted. The court seems to have rejected the federal mandates and guarantees provided by the U.S government. The court symbolizes rebellion against the union and possed the potential for seeds of the civil war.

Why didn't Worrel stand trial for his involvement in the conspiracy? Worrel used business connection and personal influence to avoid being cross examined by the court. Sufficient evidence existed to indict Worrel and bring him before the court to have him examined. Worrel not standing trial was a great injustice.

During William Daniels testimony, Daniel put Sharp and Williams at the scene of the crime; and Eliza Graham's testified about Sharp's boasting in at the Warsaw House; why did the prosecution build on these facts and cement the argument for a verdict of guilty? The court was not following constitutional law. Instead, it create a customary law, convenient to exonerate these men. The evidence was convincing enough to bring minimal punishment against them and circumstantial enough to bring capital punishment against these men.

How did the defense team make Daniels testimony seem uncreditable? The persecuting attorney was incompetent. The defense team immediately picked up on this fact and exploited it. This further weakened any chance for justice to prevail.

Should have Jacobs been prosecuted for conspiracy to kill even though he did not directly participate with the mob attack? Jacobs should have received punishment for his involvement. Even though Jacobs did not participate directly, he was an accomplice to the crime. Jacobs was stained by his association and involvement in the crime.

Did the fact William Grover, Mark Aldrich, Thomas Sharp, Levi Williams, and Jacob Davis belong to the masonic society influence their political ambitions and desire to kill Joseph Smith? The Masons were not directly involved in the conspiracy, however, the Masonic lodge provided opportunity and means for these men to meet and conspire against the prophet Joseph Smith.

The fact Lamborn dismisal of Daniels incriminating testimony against Levi Williams, Thomas Sharp, Mark Aldrich, Jacob C. Davis, and William N. Grove is outrageous!

Why did Benjamin Brackenbury's testimony that Grover boast he killed Joseph Smith had him acting for the community as a theme of rebellion of civil law? The greater tradegy of anarchy was the lose of life incurred in the civil war. The civil war divided a country and turned brother against brother in a contest to establish supreme sovereignty.

Why did Mark Aldrich gain back most his land for pennies on the dollar after he declared bankruptcy? This was pure theft and reflected the moral and legal decay in the community politics and legal system.

Why did Lamborn dismiss three of his most important witnesses? Lamborn was probably bribed to throw the case. Lamborn was known to accept bribery and could be swayed by an angry community not to vigorously prosecute the accused. Was Lamborn paid to throw the trial into confusion?

Why did captain Grover not hasten his pace to rescue Joseph Smith from the Mobs? Captain Grover should have been force on threat of court martial too justify his actions. The integrity of Captain Grover came under question because he could have raced his men, double time, too Carthage and rescued the prophet and the apostles from the mobs.

Why didn't the Carthage Greys purse the fleeing mob members? Captain Grover did not seem too be compelled to protect the life of the prophet nor capture the prophets assailants. Captain Grover seems have followed a precise strategy of being late and too exhausted to persue.

Given the testimony of Eliza Graham and the testimony of Daniels; why did defense attorney Browning claim even if his Sharp, Williams, and Grover had opportunity to comit the crime, no admitting they did, however, they would be justified because it they were acting on the old citizens desire to kill Joseph Smith?

Levi Williams lead the mobs into a civil war against the Mormons. Why did William seditious and traitorous actions not go unpunished by the law?

Why were gun shots heard but none of the mob members injuried?

Who killed Joseph and Hyrum Smith?

What was the political tension between the whigs and the democrats? Joseph Smith would have been the President of the United States of American. Business men in the East like the prophets political views. Popular polls indicated the Prophet Joseph Smith would have easily once the presidency.

The acquitals of these men marked the beginning of civil war. Rebellion against law. Great is his glory and endless his priesthood. Ever and ever the keys he will hold.
Faithful and true, he will enter his kingdom, Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.

I wish I had found this book earlier in third year. Like others said, it's easy to read and since it's broken up into 60 chapters (which are each about ~10 minute chunks) it's great when you have little bits of free time throughout the day. Occasionally you'll read something that you'll want to look up elsewhere, but you can definitely use this as your primary textbook. I read this book ALONE, no blueprints, no A&L, no pre-test and my shelf score jumped into the 90's compared to the 50's before. Buy this book, it's absolutely money.

Although this is probably not adequate as a primary source when studying for the shelf, this book is excellent! For a study guide, it's actually a pretty enjoyable read. It contains 40 case scenarios that cover some common and not-so-common pediatric illnesses. It has also some useful tables, X-rays, and diagrams. I recommend using it in conjunction with Blueprints.

Unfortunately, I had pediatrics before I learned about the Case Files series. So, for Step 2, I needed a good review source. I read this in 2 days and peds was one of my best sections on Step 2. I can't stress enough how the layout of this series lends to a high yield review that doesn't take extreme concentration. This series is almost all you need for third year!

In the Cats of Thistle Hill, Roger Caras writes a story that is like reading about the peaceful environment of Ann of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, animal version. Besides feeling the peaceable nature of Thistle Hill and its environment, you read about the lives of different cats living at Thistle Hill, their personalities, and finally if you have ever thought about the philosophy of cats, you will have that conversation with Roger Caras in this book. Especially, note Teddy, a scarred cat rescued from the streets of San Francisco, who won't have anything to do with other animals until he discovers Emmy. Teddy goes on to become a single parent father of three kittens whom he mothers, protects and loves Teddy's story not only is an interesting true story, but it makes the point that animals have feelings. There are other equally beautiful stories of cats, a llama, dogs, a burro etc. in this book.

Outstanding, well written, and entertaining.

My vet loaned me her copy. I like it so well I plan to buy my own copy and also one for a friend. I look forward to reading other books by Roger Caras. He has written over 60. Nancy Allen, Ada, Oklahoma

"Caught In The Act" (Amhearst Series #2) has main character Merrilee Kramer bumbling from one klutzy moment to another, getting herself into scrape after scrape as she tries to find out who killed Arnie Meister. Merry is the local paper's cub reporter covering the murder story who fashions herself to be a sleuth.

It's Christmas, and she is having a hard time figuring out who would want to kill Arnie, her co-worker's soon to be ex-husband. But before you can string up some garlands, the suspects start piling up: the soon to be ex, an old high school flame, the biggest business tycoon in town.

To make matters more complicated, Merry thinks she's falling in love with Curt Carlyle, a local painter, but are her many brushes with near death scaring him off?

I liked Merry Kramer and her antics. The book is well written, as are all Gayle Roper's books. As it's set at Christmas, this would make a dandy Christmas gift.

Great book!

I didn't think I would enjoy "Caught in the Act" as much as I did "Caught in the Middle", but I liked it even better! The mystery kept me guessing until the end of the book(and so did the romance). I can really relate to Merry. She seems like someone who would be a good friend(if she were real). She's a great character. I cannot wait for the next in the series. Write(and publish) faster!

After reading Caught in the Middle, the first book in this series, I thought that it would be impossible for the second installment in Gayle Roper's series to measure up to the first book. Happily, the second book is even more entertaining than its predecessor and will not disappoint readers in any way.

Perhaps the best part of this series is the main character. Merry Kramer continues to be a person that everyone can relate to. She, unlike many characters in Christian fiction, is a real person who is not perfect. She makes mistakes but learns from them, just like the rest of us. She battles with bad hair days and the always present cat hair on her pants. She often finds herself in unusual and often hilarious situations and never runs away from a challenge. The rest of the books characters are immensely entertaining; from Merry's demanding cat to the artist who is constantly frustrated at her independence. The newspaper staff that Merry works with is full of colorful characters who provide many of the best scenes in the novel.

As an avid mystery reader, I am used to being able to predict the endings of mysteries before the main character does. I was very happy to discover that I was completely wrong in my guess at who the murderer was in this book. The ending is a complete surprise; I cannot think of a better way to end such a charming, entertaining book.

Humor, mystery, faith, and a little bit of romance are all skillfully blended together to create a book worthy of a "prime" spot on anyone's bookshelf.

Even better than the first

If you read my review of the first book, you know that I loved it. Well, in my mind, this one is so much better. I don't remember laughing out loud at this one, but over all the story is so great. The mystery is harder to solve, yet makes perfect sense. The romantic subplot is great as are the plots involving the other characters that we meet. I saw a lot of myself in Merry's problems with her personal life. The first book is great and a great way to meet the characters, but this book gets even better. Be sure to read them both. I'm egarly waiting the third book, Caught Napping, which the author has just started on.

The predecessor to this book was good, but the sequel was even better. The characters are just as real and loveable, and the feisty heroine Merry tells her story with both dry wit and tender feeling. The mystery was also even better--just about as hard to solve as an Agatha Christie. If you liked the first book, grab "Caught in the Act"!

Thankfully, this book does not include any of the get-rich-and-happy-quick nonsense which is so prevalent these days. It illustrates the fundamentals of being a person worthy of following, example conversations, and techniques for honing communication. The book also contains several exercises to help you apply its concepts to your personality. The book is dotted with lists of important values and lists of powerful words.

The thing that really amazes me about this book after having read it is that it successfully challenges the myth that a person 'has' charisma - bad luck for those who don't! The central argument that people 'do' charisma was what first attracted me to it.

It's refreshing to know that if a person has the "content", the life experience, a moderate amount of intelligence, and can discover the uniqueness of their personality (through the exercises in the book), then charismatic performance is a real possibility.

I have done a number of the exercises in the book to very good effect. I found the exercises particularly helpful in three ways: 1) giving me some structures to successfully build my content around, 2)finding the right frames to wrap my message around, and 3) an unbelievable array of language techniques to use when creating the main messages. I have used the ideas to make board presentations and manage change within my organisation. I am literally astounded at how these techniques have smoothed what could have been very difficult persuasion situations.

Perhaps the most important part of the book for me is the sections on finding a mission and life passion. I completed these exercises and I have to say they have made a very substantial impact on me.

I thoroughly recommend this book. It's the first one I have found that really drills down into the actions one takes to make a difference. Most of the other titles I've read are too general and haven't gone into specifics. This one actually shows you what to do!

Personally I like these sort of books that provide desirable guidelines to deal with the various situations that we should face as a human beng. My preference and enjoying this book shuld be derived from my disposition which is approximate to introverted side. This book also overthrow my myth that charisma and speech ability is genetically innated and confine to specific groups of people who tend to show off. Since many people around the world experience caused by psychological conflict because of matters of communication, it is a truly recommendable one to read. It's not only prevent troublesome event between person or group, but also gratify life of communication.

A must have !

I had been looking for a book like this for a long time, I finally fount it, it tells you that you can have that so much desired Charisma, you don't have to be born with it, this is so important if you are a Sales person, there are lots of techniques that will help you sell what you want or to persuade people. It combines a little of neurolinguistic (anchors) and that theory that there are 3 kinds of people: visual, auditive and kinesthatic... so interesting. The book is worth every dollar you spend.

Tons of insightful information

If you compare books on interpersonal development, most of them reiterate the same basic points with little new innovation. It's like every author tries to re-write "How to Win Friend's and Influence People" with their own personal spin and a few new insights, and then try to pass it off as an informative piece of work. This book is not like that.

"The Charisma Effect" is filled with new content that I haven't seen in other books, so much so that I am now re-reading it, this time taking notes. It seems as if the author took the time to do alot of his own research rather than simply reiterate what others have said or simply rely on anecdotal experience.

The book dispenses alot of information, so I would recommend a person read "How to Win Friends" first as a primer, and then follow up with this book.

As I read Charity's reward I was reminded of where I had grown up and the ways of small towns in the foothills of east tennessee. I enjoyed the storyline and found it easy to follow.
Many of the characters in this book define what small communities of the era are all about. I think whoever reads this novel will ultimately find rememberances of their own family, present and past. I recommend this read to anyone who is interested in family, reminicing, and southern charm.

Mr. Blaylock has managed to capture & describe what is was like to grow up in the old South. He uses very clear and understandable vocabulary to accomplish this journey. You will understand the "Clanish" nature of small rural communities & their most human natures. From the kind, caring Will to the Outsider Elizabeth you will come to know each character personally. While reading Charity's Reward you will swear Mr. Blaylock came to your hometown to chose his characters. Each is very real & believable.

A thought provoking book that encourages you to look at life choices and the consequences they have. A sort of mixture of a Francine River's book meets Barbara Kingsolver's The Poison Wood Bible. I picked it up and didn't put it down until I closed the last page.

Charity's Reward is a wanderful story. I started reading it and couldn't put it down until I finished it the same day. I felt like I was right there with the characters in the story and there were so many different personalities that you got a little of everything in it. It is definitley a great book that everyone should read.

I LOVED it! Once you begin, be prepared to read until it's completed since you won't be able to put it down. I enjoyed it more than any book I have read in a long time. I laughed, cried, gasped in surprise, sighed with relief, a full range of emotions. This novel is very character driven. They seem to come alive with the story. In addition, the author beautifully describes the Tennessee mountains. Charity's Reward is a well-written, entertaining story. I highly recommend it.
