I had to prepare for a test for certification in middle school math and was terrified. I hadn't studied algebra or statistics in over 20 years. I ordered several books online and got more at the public library, and this was the ONLY book written in a way that allowed for effective self teaching. The other reviewer said it best, the language they use to explain concepts is the key. I wanted a book that talked to me like I was 6 years old. It needed a bit more on geometry, other than that is was an excellent study guide. Great for Praxis preparation.

What I've been looking for....

This is a very well-thought-out book. I've looked at many many math books, looking for one with good, clear explanations. This one is deceptive - at first glance it looks just like any other math book, but this is what I was looking for. For example, the explanation of why we invert and multiply when we divide fractions is clear and understandable - few other math books even bother to try to explain why or how this works, but this book does and does it well. Another wonderful thing about this book is that the authors are aware that words used in math can be confusing - they take the time to explain, for example, why we often use the word "of" when multiplying fractions (1/6 of 3/4) instead of saying "times" (1/6 times 3/4).

The explanations in this book are excellent (and that is what I was looking for) and they always show every step of a solution, so it is easy to follow along. They also use visual explanations, again making sure to show every step.

The focus in this book is on relating the math to practical life - this also really aids understanding.

There are lots of exercises to practice with - and answers are provided for all of them.

The best thing about this book is the "tone" of the authors. They write in an easy-to-understand, clear way. The book doesn't seem to have been written in "mathese" another language, but in normal English for normal people. It gives the feeling of being written by people who are caring and helpful and want the reader to understand - as opposed to most math textbooks that seem to be written more to impress other math educators than for real people who aren't used to math-style writing.

The book covers all the usual topics of arithmetic and goes up through elementary algebra.

Even though the intended market for this book is adults or college students who have already been through years of math, much of which they've forgotten, I recommend it also for homeschoolers. This inexpensive book can take the place of purchasing curriculum for years. It also can be used as a reference for finding good explanations and examples of specific topics - it has an excellent table of contents and index.

For us math challenged peeps!

I am back to school after how many years and was half panicking when I was told I would have not one but TWO math classes. This book is one of the texts. It is easy to follow and quite thorough. Out of the 6 books I need for these classes, so far I understand this one the best.

My knowledge of English just isn't good enough to do justice to this artist and this book. Robert Bateman translated into paintings all the enchantment I have felt for nature since I was a child. Wish I was much younger to try to follow his footsteps!! Marvellous book!

The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing.

To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location. A worthy addition to your library.

This book, together with "The World of Robert Bateman" is one of the best wildlife art books ever published, and truly shows Bateman at his best. The later collections (especially the very last ones) don't even come close to the beauty of the paintings in these two books. In most paintings the animal is just one character, sometimes not even the main one, while the landscape and the surroundings (depicted in marvelous and maddening detail) almost always plays a central role. Here Bateman shows to be a master of the techniques he uses, and creates pictures of stunning beauty who truly come to life. Both books are highly highly recommended if you life "realistic" wildlife art.

Actually, I give it ten stars! This outstanding book is the must-have for fans of "The Most Decorated Combat Soldier of World War II". I acquired mine in 1998 and it's still an indispensible resource!

There is no other single source of printed material on Audie as extensive as this. From his family tree, to being born into a family of twelve children, to his military career, to his film career and beyond, Simpson combines excellent prose with hundreds of photos, graphics, maps, drawings, etc.

Yeah, it's expensive, but it's also a large book and there were only 5000 printed. A few years ago, there were only 500 known copies left of the original printing.

This will be about as close as you get to meeting Audie L. Murphy...don't miss this chance!

I'm a disabled Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran and have a great admiration and respect for this truely great American War hero. Col. Simpson has written the best book that I have ever read regarding Audie Murphy. I'm fortunate to have his wife, Vera, as a neighbor and a very dear close friend of mine. I've been honored by his wife as she presented me a signed copy of this book as a Christmas gift in 1998. I shall forever treasure this great book and it's author, Col. Harold B. Simpson.

A must for every Audie Murphy fan.

I should have to "ditto" the review by Ms. Richardson. This is a must for ALL "Audie" admirers, such as myself. It is very detailed and Col. Simpson did extensive research with the help of Mr. Murphy's family and friends. You'll laugh and "CRY" in this special book about a very special WWII combat soldier.

This book is a serious, scholarly treatment of the life of WW II's most decorated combat soldier. It will likely stand and the definitive work on the subject. Based on extensive research into primary sources, it contains a detailed account of Murphy's life and work. Roughly divided into sections dealing with the different dimensions of his life - military service, movie career, and personal life, each chapter contains an extensive array of photographs. It's worth whatever it takes to have a copy of this book

This is a funny but good bio/autobio of Al, even if it's from '85 and so much more has happened in the 14 years since. At least it tells you A LOT about his 'Early Years'. When some old fart like Bob hope (ugh, drop dead already!) writes a life story, it's so much that alot probably gets left out and doesn't sound as good anyway. Maybe al will write another one sometime, continuing where this left off.

This book is so vivid. Absolutely no words in the comic strips are needed to understand exactly what the cat in each comic strip is doing. They're SO funny! One comic strip has two cats playing tennis with a mouse as a "tennisball." Another comic strip has an owner of a cat holding a bill from a delivery guy for MANY boxes of tuna that she obviously didn't order and her cat nearby looking on innocently. The feline humor just keeps PURRING along! Buy it with confidence for that absolutely FELINE laugh!

With three sons who are incapable of keeping their hands off one another, Ms. Borden's book has been a godsend. Helping me to understand when and when not to get involved and realizing that the rivalry does indeed teach them many lessons has been most valuable. Ms. Borden's style of writing is both informative and extremely enjoyable. A must for anyone with more than one child!!

AT last -- A well organized, easy-to-read and practical guide to coping with sibling rivalry! Full of wit and humor, this book lays out the most common areas of friction between kids growing up together, explains what's really going on, and provides expert and practical advice on what to do. There isn't just one solution; parents are encouraged to choose the approach that works for them.

As the mother of four, Marian Edelman Borden has had plenty of experience with her subject -- and somehow survived it. Her humor and clearheadedness shine through in her writing, and her sage, down-to-earth advice is -- well -- priceless.

If you're a parent, this book is a MUST. It wouldn't hurt siblings of any age to read it, too.

This book offered very helpful practical advice, with a welcome touch of humor, on daily life with squabbling kids. The author's tips and tricks for ending the inevitable fights over sharing rooms, celebrating a sibling's birthday, and resolving holiday hassles, get right to the heart of the problem. Best of all, the solutions she offers work! Ms. Borden also tackles serious topics such as academic competition among siblings, blended families, and the difficulties faced by a sibling who has a brother or sister with a chronic illness or disability. In all cases, she presents families with options that they can adapt to their needs.

Review Date: 2003-10-08
As the part-time working mother of two very active and competitive sons, I found Borden's advice very wise and helpful, as well as entertaining. Her scenarios and suggestions are right on the mark. All parents have problems dealing with sibling rivalry, and it's important to admit it. It won't just "go away;" what you learn here is how to deal with it.

For example - if your kids (like mine) are close in age, and the same sex, it's important to teach them to "fight fair." It's also important not to get overly involved with the details of their arguments, and not to become hostile yourself (which is understandable... if it's 6 PM and you haven't started dinner yet!) Borden says kids whose parents are overly critical and argumentative will imitate their behavior, rather than try to do better.

I came away from this book with new ideas and tips, as well as a personal pat on the back for things I've been doing well all along. I also loved the little sidebars written in the margins, which were a refreshing mix of old and new information.

I absolutely loved this book. I read it with amazement as I compared the events of my time in Zimbabwe to the behind the scenes information presented in the book. I was amazed at just how much was never put on air for the general public to be aware of and also to know the depth of the people's convictions (even when they are wrong) and their willingness to act it out was very intriguing to me. Well written book I even learnt some things about my history I was unaware of. I can't wait for the next book.

The title says it, his book is excellent, written very well, blending the facts and interviews in a flow that makes it easy to read, but i would say it could prove very hard reading if you are not familiar with the area or African politics. I would not give this book to someone to read unless they were from Zimbabwe or studying the history of the country.

What i enjoyed most, having lived in Zimbabwe until 2004 is the book explains the reasons behind what happened, even living in Zimbabwe all my life i have learnt facts i never knew before, it does not change the way i feel but it does give me greater understanding.

As i said, unless you are Zimbabwean, have lived in Zimbabwe or studying the history of the area, this book may prove tough going.

With a deep understanding and love for this magnificent country, Hill lays out an excellent expos? over Zimbabwe's rise and unfortunate fall under the rule of President Mugabe. By elegantly blending historical events with a large number of interviews from both ZANU-PF officials and the MDC opposition to ordinary Zimbabweans, Hill has created a solid piece that is thorough and analytical but yet easy-to-read. Highly recommended for any reader in search of the root and underlying causes to Zimbabwe's worsening plight.

Africa correspondent for the Washington Times who grew up in different countries of southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, Hill gives a detailed account of the overthrow of the white-controlled government when the country was known as Rhodesia by indigenous black rebels and the subsequent cementing of the autocratic, often brutal rule of Robert Mugabe. Mugabe was one of the leaders of the insurrection and political leader of Zimbabwe (as the country was named after the end of white rule). To a large extent, this is the story of the murky circumstances whereby Mugabe became leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU), including the assassination of its leader, and its role in helping to keep him in power. Instead of a bona fide political party in a democratic system, ZANU became the enforcement arm of Mugabe's one-man rule. Hill's chronicle of unfortunate Zimbabwe and biographical portrayal of its autocratic leader is a set piece in how things have gone wrong in many countries in Africa.

It did slow down in the middle but dont worry, it picks right back up again. I do hope the there will be a story about Wendy. She is someone that I would enjoy hearing more about. Twenty-nine years old Samantha Smith has made a living out of her obsession for neatness. She is the queen of clutter busters and an anathema to the chaotic messes many people possess because for whatever reason they never toss or give away anything. Carver Advertising executive Ethan Carver hires Sam to organize his files before his new partner arrives next week. His friend Jared Hamilton tells him he is nuts to employ an organizer. However, Sam successfully completes the mission on time.

Jared and his partner his sister Molly are opposites as he is organized and she is clutter. When she misplaces key business papers, he heeds Ethan's advice and hires Sam to clean up the "poop". As Sam works on putting in order Molly's mess, she and Jared fall in love though he wonders how someone so efficiently organized could turn his ordered life into chaos.

BE MY NEAT-HEART is a great "Love Inspired" romance that amusingly yet poignantly focuses on the realistic issue of cluttering in and out of the office (trust me I understand Molly first hand). The lead pair is a terrific couple as he cannot comprehend why intelligent people need her consulting services and she wonders if she has found her clutter-free soulmate, but worries he will flee in terror once he meets her cat, dog, and sibling as pandemonium is their forte. Readers will appreciate this fine inspirational tale and look forward to Judy Baer's offbeat but welcome next story starring a woman who wonders whether you have hugged your iguana lately.

At first I was a little hesitate to purchase this book considering that I have over two hundred books on the subject of the Beatles, however, I'm glad that I did since this book stands out from the others. Definitely, it's informative as a reference guide, and it includes a large amount of rarely seen and unseen photos of the Beatles together and apart. Also, the appearance of it is quite attractive with its lavish hardcover; moreover, the beautiful black and white, and colorful photos that it contains. Without a doubt, if you're either a die-hard or casual fan, then you should definitely purchase this book, and place it next to the other valuable Beatles items that you may own.

I picked up this book on a whim for my 2 year old who is obsessed with the Beatles. However, I have spent several hours myself looking through it and I love being able to read about the stories behind the pictures, even if she cant enjoy them yet. The pictures are brilliant and the size of them is also good, no squinting to see whats going on. I would recommend this book to any Beatles fan, and to anyone else who wants to know more about them, not only as a band but as individuals.

I love this collection of Beatle photographs taken from early in their careers to the post-Beatle years. (I have two copies of this book - the first one has a chronology that stops in 1999-2000, when George was still alive and the second one includes George's tragic demise in 2001).

I love the way a Beatle song is used as a title for each chapter. The photos are well documented and include many people who crossed paths with the Beatles, such as Harold Wilson, Ed Sullivan (of course) and many lesser known people.

The book also provides a rich history for each year that is being covered. Events are chronicled in the chronology and is a very "Beatle friendly" gauge indeed. The Beatles' travels and events regarding same are recorded. There are two pictures of George, packing his "Beatle Bag," with the picture captioned about how BOAC provided the Fabs free flights from England to France provided they advertised with those bags. Harold & Louise Harrison, Sr. are shown, sending their son off to America proudly and lovingly. These make a good book even better.

Many of these photographs had not seen the light of day prior to the publication of this wonderful book. No Beatle fan should be without this one!

Yes, it is one of the best Beatles photo albums I've ever seen. It covers that period from 1963 through the breakup and to George's death in 2001. Some of the pictures are familiar, others aren't. It's a wonderful journey to start at the beginning and see the Beatles' milestones and how they change. We see their early exuberance and eagerness to please by posing in showbizzy poses in matching suits, being feted and receiving endless awards. They morph into the ultimate cool icons, hair growing shaggier, clothes weirder. Their relationships are chronicled. First it was Cyn, Jane, Patti and Mo. Then it was Linda and Yoko. Eventually Patti and Maureen were replaced by Olivia and Barbara. I love the early pictures of the women - all those wonderful dolly dresses and Patti's amazing eyes. (I was sooo jealous of her!). The pictures thin out after the breakup. There are intermittent photos of the individual Beatles and their families (mostly Paul) through the 70s, 80s and 90s. The last photo in the book is the sad photo of Paul the morning George died. There are almost no photos of the Beatles taken in America so it cannot be called a comprehensive collection. After all, this was the English press (Daily Mail and AP)and a lot of these photos never made it stateside until now. One thing that historians will note is the plethora of shots from the middle '60s showing just how important they were during that time. I'm so happy to have come upon this book. It is highly recommended for Beatles fans both who remember when and who want to know what it was like.

This is a collection of rare Beatles' photos taken from pre-1964 to a period 'after the Beatles.' Each chapter of the book is titled after a Beatles' song (e.g. chapter four is titled "Hello Goodbye").

The photos have descriptions beside them giving an explanation of what is going on in the pic, where it might have been taken, who is in the pic, and other facts that might pertain tom the pic such as record stats, radio shows, TV programs, etc.

Periodically throughout this book a chronology of a certain year (i.e. 1968) will be shown. The chronology explains what happened on certain dates or days in that year. For instance, in the 1968 chronology, on 23 August it states "Ringo quits the Beatles during the recording sessions for the White Album."

The book contains 600 photographs selected from the archives of the 'Daily Mail." The book contains over 200 photographs from negatives never previously printed and are said to be printed here for the first time.

The pictures in this book are pics taken at parties, vacations that each Beatles member took alone, or together, recording studio shots, candid shots (some of these are just plain terrible, but fun to see), and many other various settings. This is a great book for Beatles' fans, and a must for hard core Beatles collectors.
