Excellent beginner's text (at least) on welding.

I bought this book on the strength of previous reviews and absolutely no experience at welding, brazing, silver-soldering, silver-brazing, sweat-soldering, or any other metal-joining skill beyond electronics soldering. It was a good choice. The author covers his subject thoroughly, clearly knows much more than he can pack into this book, and is able to present it all in an understandable fashion. There may be other books aimed at welding specialties that cover them in greater depth than this book does; this can tell you enough to let you decide whether you need more info or not. There is enough here to enable a neophyte to select, intelligently, the equipment required to accomplish whatever project he is considering. The rest is practice. The only thing lacking in the text is minor: a single color section demonstrating the differences in flames for different purposes. That information is carried by black-and-white line drawings in this book. They may be enough; I would feel a bit better-informed with a color photo (or illustration, for that matter).

Very good book.

I like this book a lot. Good information. One sentence annoys me though. On page 7 the author states, "Pure oxygen is flammable." This is a false statement. It made me wonder if he ever used an oxyacetylene outfit when I first read it. Who hasn't accidentally tried to light the oxygen first instead of the acetylene and found that nothing happens? Higher concentrations of oxygen increase the rate of oxidation/combustion but oxygen isn't a fuel, i.e., it isn't flammable. But pure oxygen makes things that are flammable more dangerous.

The rest of the books shows that he know what he's talking about on other topics.

I recommend the book. I couldn't find many books with so much information on oxyacetylene welding. I feel that I was lucky to find this information in a book that is also a well written book.

If you can afford only one book on Oxy Welding get this one, no make that two so you can have one in you toolbox and one to replace it when the one in your toolbox "grows legs" and walks off. This is "thee" book for the practical weldor and fits nicely into your toolbox. Read it, use it, take it with you where ever you go to work. The author is writing to you as your coworker not as an instructor or engineer though he is still showing you how to do it correctly and SAFELY.

This book helped out greatly! This is a very infomative book and provides a good overview of all welding types.

This book is absolutely adorable! If you've read anything else by Tad Hills, you know he has a great sense of humor and the illustrations in this book make our family laugh! They also so clearly demonstrate the opposite that my 2 year old reads this aloud to us, using the pictures as a guide. A wonderful starter book of opposites that is also really fun.

A Great Way to Introduce Opposites

This board book features amusing and colorful illustrations of Duck, Goose, and friends demonstrating pairs of opposite words. For example, in the clean/dirty pair a clean, white Goose is standing with his eyes closed and hands up warding off an extremely dirty Duck who's approaching him from the opposite page.

My daughter, who is still too young to comprehend opposites, loves to look at the pictures and point at Duck, and the sturdy board book can withstand her strong and awkward grip as she flips the pages.

This book is an entertaining way to introduce new vocabulary and the concept of opposites to preschoolers who will definitely get a laugh at the funny scenarios and facial expressions on the characters.

Great book.

I like this book. My girls love it and is a great way to teach opposites. It is very simple my 2 year old knows it by heart. I do add say for clean I say the "opposite" is dirty so they have that reference of the word opposite.

As a huge fan of Tad Hills and his Duck and Goose characters, WHAT'S UP, DUCK? was an absolute delight!

At only twenty-two sturdy board pages, this is a perfect first reader, but it's also a great book to read with your toddler.

Along with the typical opposites of up, down and slow, fast, there are also my favorites -- clean, dirty and heavy, light.

The illustrations are what make this book a winner, and the absolute perfection of Duck and Goose are not to be missed.

I was sitting in the Christian bookstore reading this, looking for a book to give my father-in-law because he was dieing with cancer. I sat their crying and crying...the song is beautiful and what the book says is even more beautiful...because if you know you are going to Heaven, then there is joy in the passing, joy in the pain, joy knowing it will only be getting better, much better when we are home with our creator and out of this painful world.
God and His home is the final word.

Cecil Murphey's "When Someone You Love Has Alzheimer's" is exactly what it claims to be -- a source of daily encouragement. It offers honest and open feelings along with a sense of companionship by recognizing that we are not alone in having those feelings. It gives Scriptures to remind us of God's presence and provision, and a short prayer to focus our attention on the One who can provide all we need -- whatever that may be for the day or situation. Ideas and adjustments for coping are given that offer hope...

I highly recommend this devotional book for anyone who is on the journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's or related diseases. It would be a wonderful gift of encouragement.

On a retreat with Restored To Serve, a ministry I'm involved in, we used this and two other books by Cecil Murphy to open dialogue between all of us. As we read page after page someone would say, "I really need to read this whole book."

What we got was that the books let us know there were others going through the same things we were. Those who are caring for elderly people who have their "moments" were helped and we read and found comfort in the pages of When Someone You Love Has Alzheimer's.

Compassionate, caring, and practical!

I first read Diane Noble's writing when I read Promise Me the Dawn under the name of Amanda MacLean. Ms. Noble is an excellent author. She does an excellent job of finding new areas to write Christian Fiction about. I enjoyed this book's characters and their search for the love that God has for them. This book has an excellent message of waiting upon God's timing, even if difficult situations. I look forward to the next two sequels and seeing what lays ahead for the characters.

It's 1860s California and the Byrne family is about to lose their home, Rancho de la Paloma because they have had to use all available finances to fight to prove its boundaries. Aislin Byrne has been friends with Jamie Dearbourne from the neighboring rancho all her life and it was always believe they would marry, so when he asks for her hand just before he leaves to go fight in the Civil War, no one is surprised. But when word comes of Jamie's death, it seems it will be necessary for Aislin to marry Jamie's brother, Spence, in order to help save both their ranchos. Then, when word comes that Jamie might not be dead after all, Aislin joins in the search and will be honor-bound to marry him even though she has found it is Spence she really loves. Aislin's father doesn't realize that his supposed friend, Hugh Dearbourne, father to Jamie and Spence is actually sabotaging his efforts to save his home and everything he has worked so hard to achieve. Jamie and Spence soon join forces to break and deliver wild mustangs to the army in order to save the rancho and in doing so, attempt to find out the truth about Jamie as well.

This is an outstanding novel, superbly crafted and richly textured with may surprising twists and turns. Published by Bantam's Christian/Inspirational imprint, Waterbrook Press, this novel will appeal to historical romance readers everywhere. Although the character's beliefs are quite evident, they never overpower the story, and simply help motivate Aislin, Spence, and others to keep going even though the going gets tough. Diane Noble is one of the best writers of "inspirational" romance today. Her thoroughly researched, compelling stories are worthy of a wider audience than they will receive simply marketed as "inspirational" novels. This book shouldn't simply be read by the "Christian" audience as the beliefs expressed by the characters are universal. I understand its the first of a trilogy, but this one certainly stands on its own.

Dr. Lesser is head and shoulders above the rest of the medical crowd and this book is another manifestation of this fact. It can be a bit dry at times, but the message is huge and was powerfuly important to me: my sporadic chest tightness/pains were NOT the onset of cardiac trouble though my idiot local quack thought so and the cardio guy he sent me to practically told me I'd die of a heart attack if I DIDN'T get an angiogram in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. IDIOTS, well actually not idiots, if they don't induce a stroke and kill you then, then they will likely find a bit of plaque, enough to justify a stent and then WHAM you are in the system for life, baby, and you can pay, pay, pay.

My chest tightness/pains: it was emotional and sometimes delayed muscular after yoga -- well after, like the next day. Dang, the medical industrial complex lost a good customer, they coulda milked me for 30+ years. What dicks! Dr. Lesser gives the facts so you can help heal yourself.

THE ENDURING SPIRIT OF THE POLISH PEOPLE!

I READ THIS STORY FOR THE FIRST TIME ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO. MY SISTER RECENTLY REDISCOVERED THE BOOK AND TOLD ME HOW MUCH SHE ENJOYED IT. I AGREE, THE SECOND READING IS EVEN BETTER.

IN 1939, HITLER INVADED POLAND AND WORLD WAR II BEGAN. THIS IS THE STORY OF A YOUNG ENGLISH WOMAN WHO IS VISITING POLAND AND STAYING WITH A POLISH FAMILY. SHE'S ENCOURAGED TO LEAVE BECAUSE THE NAZIS ARE INVADING, BUT GIVES UP HER OPPORTUNITY TO GO BECAUSE SHE'S BECOME SO INVOLVED WITH HER FRIENDS AND POLAND'S STRUGGLE TO REMAIN FREE.

THROUGH THE STORY, SOME OF THE HISTORY OF POLAND IS REVEALED AND THE CONSTANT FIGHT THAT COUNTRY HAS HAD TO MAINTAIN INDEPENDENCE FROM FOREIGN AGGRESSION. SHEILA MATTHEWS, THE MAIN CHARACTER, JOINS THE POLISH UNDERGROUND AND WORKS AGAINST THE NAZIS. THE TRAGEDY OF THE POLISH PEOPLE WHO ARE FIGHTING ALONE AND WAITING FOR HELP FROM THEIR ALLIES IS SAD, BUT VERY COURAGEOUS. SHEILA IS ALSO INVOLVED IN A ROMANCE WITH ADAM WISNIEWSKI, A WEALTHY LANDOWNER WHO IS ALSO A RESISTANCE FIGHTER.

THE PACE OF THIS BOOK IS A LITTLE SLOWER THAN WE MODERN DAY READERS ARE ACCUSTOMED TO, BUT THE AUTHOR REWARDS US WITH THE METHODICAL MANNER IN WHICH THE STORY AND PLOT ARE REVEALED. I HAD THE FEELING OF WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE LIVING IN WARSAW AS THE CITY IS EXPERIENCING BOMBARDMENT. THE DAILY EXPLODING BOMBS, THE NEWS OF THE DEATH OF FRIENDS, THE LACK OF HEAT, ELECTRICITY AND WATER WERE ALL A PART OF THE RUIN OF WARSAW. FINALLY, STARVATION AND THEN THE INVADING GERMAN ARMY MARCHED INTO THE CITY.

THE TITLE OF THE BOOK COMES FROM THE OPENING WORDS OF THE SONG OF THE POLISH LEGIONS WHICH LATER BECAME THE NATIONAL ANTHEM OF POLAND. THE POLISH ARE ACTUALLY SAYING THAT "AS LONG AS I'M ALIVE, POLAND WILL NOT DIE." THE SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE ENDURED!

THIS NOVEL WAS WRITTEN IN 1944, AND I FOUND IT INTERESTING TO LEARN THAT THE AUTHOR, HELEN MacINNES WAS THE WIFE OF A BRITISH INTELLIGENCE OFFICER. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THERE'S NOT A LOT OF STORIES WRITTEN THAT DEAL WITH THE SUBJECT OF THE POLISH UNDERGROUND. THIS STORY IS WELL WORTH READING AND A GOOD BOOK FOR AMERICANS WHO WANT TO READ SOMETHING ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE OF POLAND IN THE EARLY PART OF WORLD WAR II.

Best book I've read in a long time, and I read a lot...

Perhaps the author did let her anti-Nazi feelings cause her to step over the bounds now and then into a few ill-advised comments on German people, but if you can set aside the war-time emotions and the uncertainties of the time (the novel was written in 1944) and just concentrate on the story and the characters, you will find a truly gripping book.

I don't need to summarize the story, since others have already done that - but, I would like to point out a feature that I found truly satisfying. Some of the publisher blurbs and book-cover artwork might lead the reader to expect this book to be a romance novel with a wartime setting, but it is not. The initial suggestion of a romance is quickly lost in the catastrophe of the German invasion, and the heroine stays pretty much uninvolved romantically till near the very end of this long novel. When romance finally does come, it comes convincingly as an adjunct to the plot and not in a way to supercede it. I thought it was masterfully handled.

This is one book that I have enjoyed re-reading for years!

This book really took me by surprise. I wasn't enthused about reading it, as I didn't really believe it was a spy story. It starts a little slow, but it builds up and up and you're practically on the edge of your seat! The characters are believeable, and the story is gripping. This book gave me a lot of respect for the Polish people and what they went through at the beginning of WWII. Helen MacInnes really treats her audience like an intelligent friend, and her books are easy to read. This one I couldn't put down until I had finished it!

I read this one just before I emigrated to America & kept my copy for years until, one day I realized I'd lost it.

Now I have a well-worn paperback again & re-read this simple, hopeful story at least once a year.

It's about a young English woman in Poland during the long, phoney-war summer of 1939. When she finally decides to leave for the safety of England, she can't go, she's half in love with Poland & curious about why so many people seem to know her.

When Hitler's planes & army invade Poland, she is cast into the dangers & intrigues of the Polish underground. There she finds courage & love & must prove herself.

Originally published in 1944, it was quite a daring book for its day. We modern readers, used to coarse, repetitive language & explicit sex & violence, must sit back & become familiar with a different time with different priorities.

I've always enjoyed Helen MacInnes' books - they are well written, thought-provoking & well-researched.

In times of hardship heroes are needed and none moreso than in Mexico as revolution rages. The Villasenor family patriarch, an exiled red-haired Spaniard, has married an Indian woman. The first ten years of the marriage are a time of great love and passion, and the children born first are fair and favor Don Juan Villasenor. Later children are dark like their mother. One of the dark ones, Jose, from age 12 must live in the barn because he defied his father and gentled a stallion to rescue his baby brother holding onto the leg rather than shoot the horse. In his exile and solitude a hero begins his training with Grandfather Don Pio Castro who knows Jose understands the power of love and gentleness. This will be the son who defends la familia during the revolution from the soldiers who time and again attach the village. The colonel commanding the troops more particularly desires Jose's true love Mariposa and destroys her. Ultimately, the younger brother Juan (author Villasenor's father) begins to show heroic tendencies himself and will be the one to defend his mother and the remaining family against the colonel. Villasenor moves the tale along with a powerful, songlike cadence. Notable characters are the giant cousins, Basilio and Agustin, who strip naked and race the lightning and then Halley's comet on January 17, 1910, a night of magic and love, the day before el colonel begins shooting up the home village, el paraiso de Los Altos de Jalisco. Each chapter begins with epigrams featuring "Great Father Sun" that provide a sense of power from above, as in "the heavens smile . . . as all around him the gods and serpents did battle." When the final epigram tells us "and out of these children of the earth and of the stars would now come a glorious new gente in all their wonder and fire," we realize that while we have been traveling through an exciting story with more twists and turns than fiction, we also have been participating in something approximating a creation myth. Highly recommended is Villasenor's first tale of the family Villasenor, Rain of Gold.

And once I was through with it I had to go out and find more books by Victor VillaseƱor. He makes everything seem magical but at the same time believeable. It is like the ultimate adult fairy tale. Each character has so much life. The story is one that you just want to follow, you want it to keep going. Even the sad and painful stories shine with beauty as VillaseƱor tells them. This is my absolute favorite book and I highly recommend it. You won't understand until you read it.

This is a wonderful book. This book is about a family living during the Mexican Revolution. His writing just takes into this magical world and even though you know that he has made a little piece of history into this great big piece of fiction, he does it so as a matter-of -fact that you just can't believe that it's not true.

There is perhaps no medical specialty that has more misconceptions, "wives tales" and variation than Obstetrics. Williams Obstetrics is more exhaustively comprehensive than any other text for general Obstetrics. Williams has long prided itself on presenting "evidence-based medicine" - separating the wives tales from medical knowledge obtained from published studies from peer-reviewed journals. Perhaps there are those who prefer their Obstetrics with a little voodoo. For those who want to know the most up-to-date scientifically based Obstetrics, Williams is your book!

I have saved time and money by using this book's practical recommendations to increase performance. It is also the only book that I have seen that attempts to optimize Backoffice apps. Highly recommended!

Great value. Good tips.

This definitely has some great tips for making NT scream. I have referred to it several times. The Registry chapter is awesome.

Until now, I haven't been able to find any performance tuning resources that covered both Windows NT and MS BackOffice. This book has already helped me make vast performance improvements. I'm also already beginning to act on the book's recommendations to implement capacity planning procedures for the NT environment.

A wise investment for any NT professional!

I was impressed with Gardinier's concise recommendations. This book not only gave me insight on where and when to optimize my NT systems but it also provided me with hard numbers to compare against. I also benefited immensely from the chapters dedicated to optimizing MS BackOffice applications.
