Getting Results with MSP8 - PDF Version

Review Date: 2006-04-25
I bought the downloadable PDF version of "Getting Results with MediaStudio Pro 8" immediately after buying MediaStudio Pro 8 itself in order to tackle an important project I had committed to -- a video combining two dance performances in the same venue with wide-angle footage from one evening with close-ups from another (essentially a two-camera shoot), which was a first for me.

I had used earlier versions of MediaStudio several years ago, as well as other video editors (including some other Ulead products), but I realized that the manual that came with the software is largely a reference that tells you HOW to do something, but not WHY. It also won't be honest enough to tell you about deficiencies in the software or why NOT to do something.

The video I was able to produce has turned out so much better than I had hoped for, and even included techniques I hadn't even considered for this project until I tried them as part of the Getting Results exercises. In particular, I learned how to use a garbage matte with a moving path to seamlessly cover up distracting objects like a grand piano with lighting for the keyboard in front of the stage, and bright lights hitting the proscenium.

This is the first time I bought any materials to supplement the documentation that comes with a program, and it was well worth it. When I ran into a small problem with one of the exercises late one evening, I e-mailed the author and had a reply the next morning.

I would not hesitate to recommend "Getting Results with MediaStudio Pro 8" to anyone.

I am only partway through this excellent book, but am already reaping the benefits, learning not only a great deal more about MediaStudio Pro, but also video editing/production in general.

Charlie Hills shares his extensive knowledge of Ulead's MediaStudio Pro 8 software and video editing experience to convey principles and examples in a witty and conversational style that makes learning a pleasure.

You will not regret investing in a copy of this book - to me, it has fast become an essential and invaluable reference.

Gang,

I don't write book reviews because I'm rarely very impressed. This one is the exception. I learned more in 2 hours with this book than I learned in 2 years of working with MediaStudio Pro 6 and 7.

DO THE EXERCISES! Even if you're an old hat at this. I made myself go through each and every exercise and I learned things I never knew about MSP. The shortcuts are worth that alone.

This book hit home in more ways than one! It identifies the different characters of women today through wacky depictions of their crises, "gotchas", shared memories and much, much more. It's a great item that can be placed in a gift basket or given as a small token of appreciation to the women you work with, neighbors, relatives or even your best friend! (My husband even had to read it!) And, it's reasonably priced girls!

Very good book to read for parents and gymnasts. It covers basics of gymnastics and mental gymnastics training as well. It's written in the way you don't get bored by reading it. I think author has a good understanding of gymnastics and wants the reader to understand involvement in the sport of gymnastics.

This is a wonderful book for beginning gymnasts and their parents to understand more and gain the best from gymnastics. It's a helpful guide that will serve as a companion during your gymnastics journey. "Gymnastics" features a lot of burning answers to your questions, from what to pack in your gym bag to preparing for competition. It has an easy-to-read format that's interesting and imformative without trying to shove material down your throat.

"Gymnastics" gives you stories about famous gymnasts when they first started off, conditioning and stretching excercises to do at home, drills and excercises for landing safely, competition advice and information, information about gymnastics-related injuries, information about deciding your future in gymnastics, and much more. It is a very valuable resource that all gymnasts can benefit from. My only complaint is that it is a little bit outdated and it would be nice if a new edition was published. Otherwise, it's a fantastic book!

Gives a great reveiw about what it takes in the gymnastics!

I got this book when it was published in 1995, and have used it at least twice a year just using NiCd batteries. There are many times I read something on the Internet that is simply wrong according to this book. I have used NiCd batteries that I would have otherwise thrown away because the information in this book told me that they were not irreparably damaged.

THE Authoritative Book on Batteries

Review Date: 2003-02-26
As a battery engineer, I've found this handbook the single most useful technical reference in battery design, application, and troubleshooting.

The chapters are divided by battery chemistry, and each is written by an expert in the field. Most chapters include detailed technical descriptions of chemistry, electrical characteristics, construction details, applications, and pros/cons charts.

The 3rd edition features significant changes, including updates to older sections as well as new sections on progress in advanced battery systems, and an immense new section on lithium-ion batteries.

My only complaint is the lack of uniformity across chapters in terms of informational content and format. This can make comparison of battery technologies difficult. Some chapters go into too much technical detail, while some others leave out critical considerations.

These are relatively minor quibbles, however, and do not make the Handbook any less valuable to anyone dealing with batteries or other energy storage systems.

The most comprehensive battery almanac ever

Review Date: 2007-01-04
I bought this book because I had an assignment at work that required me to learn every possible thing about lithium ion batteries. I consulted general interest encyclopedias, battery experts at universities, and various online sources, but none of the above provided the comprehensive, unbiased information that Handbook of Batteries promised. It includes useful comparison charts and historical information about the development of single-use and secondary batteries, from the clunky short-lived lead-acid battery of the 1800s to the fuel cells of today. The language is surprisingly easy to understand for the lay person.

The downsides are that it weighs a ton and that the pages are so dense that you might as well be reading a dictionary cover to cover--a dictionary that's all about batteries.

This is a good resource that serves as a starting point for anyone in the unenviable position of needing to get a network into a more secure posture. If this is your role it is a must have. It covers a lot of ground in a "how-to" manner, instead of the normal books of theory. There are lots of screen prints and step by step instructions for setting up things like TACACS, IPSEC, firewalls, ACL's etc...

A must have!!

If you are a LAN administrator you NEED this book for the section entitled, "Do This Now!", and you'll find the later sections informative as well. If you are involved in network planning or security design this is a must have. The book is laid out well and easy to read with a good logical flow from one topic to another. The language the author chose to use makes it a much easier read than some of the other stuff out there I've seen. I'm definitely glad I picked this one up!

It is evident that the author has real world knowledge and experience. His writing style is clear and easy to read but he still keeps it too a high technical level. The author isn't afraid to get into specifics on how to secure your infrastructure. Too many authors today seem to write their security books with vague suggestions on security but don't really give you anything really solid. I began using this book as a reference immediately for a big project I had coming up it gave me the info I needed. This book should be on anybody's shelf that's serious about security

I have been reading networking and infrastructure books for over 15 years and there are a few that make the grade as a keeper.. (one that ends up on ebay or sold in a garage sale is NOT a keeper :) I have this as my new 'keeper' and it will stay by my side and make a few trips up and down the west coast in my trusty laptop bag.
The fact that there are examples of each 'fix' or procedure that is important is a goldmine of information. My favorite line was early in the book when Wes made the statement.

"If you don't have a firewall, stop reading this book right now and go buy or build one and implement it on your network."

Now, how many books actually tell you to put it down and go do something then show you HOW to if you run into problems or have some questions.
Wes really wants to help you in beginning those first steps to protecting your data and network all the while being able to talk to all levels who touch or SHOULD be touching security.
From the CIO/CTO/IS Manager all the way down to the guy sitting in from of a Cisco command prompt. They are all taken care of with this book in clear concise explanations and very easy to grasp diagrams..

I first discovered this book over 10 years ago when I was studying to become a teacher. Whilst on practical teaching placement, the Preschool teacher I was studying with introduced this book as her book of the week. The children were enthralled by the story, the sense of impending danger as the fox begins to emerge, the repetitious remarks that the animals make and the beautiful water coloured illustrations, all add up to a classic story for young children.
This story is so simple that children memorize it within a couple of tellings. You will find that you no longer needed to read the story yourself, the children will do it for you.

Hattie is a favorite at our house. My two-year-old niece wants to hear it when she comes over as well. The repetition in this book works so well because of the natural rhythm it creates. That rhythm will please toddlers and preschoolers will love pointing out the approaching fox. You'll be reading this for years.

By the way, my son loves this book so much he named our Little People hen Hattie.

Absolute Gem for inspiring early reading - repetition and anticipation

A really enjoyable book and great fun for inspiring a love of reading early on. This book is about Hattie, a hen in the farmyard, first she sees a pair of eyes, then two eyes and two ears, two eyes, two ears and a nose - and so on. She tells the other farmyard animals who always react in the same way.

My younger kids (3 and 4) really enjoy this, they can read along and anticipate the story as it is repetitious and builds up great suspense. We can see the fox slowly forming out of the bushes, but the other animals are oblivious to it just going about their novmal business - until the fox comes out of the bushes!

The last picture is priceless, all the animals have been illustrated with enormous eyes literalloy popping out of their heads. My kids just love this book and I am so glad to see it has been reprinted.

The illustrations are vaguely reminiscent of the kind of artwork in the very hungry caterpillar (ERic Carle) but darker colours and more realistic. A truly lovely book and highly recommended.

Being a children's librarian is all about trial and error. You think a book is going to make for a good readaloud during your storytime, but then you find that it's either too long or too boring or the wrong age level for your group or any other millions of reasons why you've failed to capture your audience's attention. This situation happens with even the best of authors. It does not happen, however, with Mem Fox. Now obviously you shouldn't go about reading aloud EVERY Mem Fox title you come across. I love, "Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge" but it really is more of a one-on-one book. However, when it comes to books like "Hattie and the Fox" you are in safe safe hands. I was shocked when I discovered that it was not considered one of Fox's best-known book (curse you, Koala Lou!). It should be though. A great use of repetition and a title that knows how to ratchet up the tension, "Hattie and the Fox" takes the old predator v. prey model and gives it a bovine twist.

One day Hattie, the resident big black hen, happens to look up and see a long reddish nose with a black tip sitting in a nearby bush. "Goodness gracious me! I can see a nose in the bushes!". You might think this kind of statement might provoke a bit of interest in the other farm animals, but it apparently does no such thing. The goose says "Good grief!", the pig says, "Well, well!", the sheep says, "Who cares?", the horse says, "So what?", and the particularly blasé cow says, "What next?". Well I'll tell you what next. Next Hattie happens to notice that the nose has been joined by two eyes in the bushes. Again the other animals say their customary responses. Even if Hattie notices a nose, two eyes and two ears in the bushes (she's always careful to say just how many body parts she sees), no one is paying much attention. About the time she gets to, "a nose, two eyes, two ears, a body, four legs, and a tail" she puts two and two together (no more, as needed) and screams out, "It's a fox! It's a fox!". The other animals apparently didn't see this coming and are provoked into a panic. All the other animals, that is, except the cow who lets loose a rousing "MOO!" that scares the fox away. The last two pages show utterly silent animals standing stock still as the text tells us, "And they were all so surprised that none of them said anything for a very long time".

A good readaloud picture book isn't afraid of a little repetition. What's particularly nice about "Hattie and the Fox" is that the tension not only escalates but takes on a kind of familiar series of steps. Mem Fox is doing something rather similar to that old Little Red Riding Hood storytelling technique of, "But Grandma, what big EYES you have" and drawing it out. The contrast between Hattie (who lives in spite of the fact that she doesn't recognize a fox until she sees the tip of his bushy bushy tail), the nonplussed animals, and the fox with dinner on his mind is reflected beautifully in the text. I like to think that any illustrator could have pulled off a nice book with this excellent writing, but Patricia Mullins style using a collage technique of tissue paper and conte crayon works particularly well. Firstly, the colors are marvelous. From the goose's bright blue eye to the red crest atop Hattie's head, the pictures burst with life. I've always suspected that books of repetition like this one must be particularly difficult to make images for. If the words are the same on every other two-page spread, how do you go about distinguishing between them? For Mulins's part, she likes to change her perspective, where the animals actually are, and how they are set up. She even drops in little details like the flies that buzz around the animals' heads. The dark eyebrowed fox for his part is definitely malicious. The only question that remains is why does he wait so long to pounce?

I guess I definitely fell in love with the book when I got to the last two pages. There stand six shell-shocked animals. You can't put a price on the horse's expression. Mister "So what?", has finally been put in his place. The pig also looks particularly appalled but the cow seems almost content. She was, after all their savior. So really, "Hattie and the Fox" has it all. Great reading aloud potential, beautiful illustrations, and a plot kids of many ages can get behind. Rather good stuff.

In her second book, Healing From Post-Traumatic Stress: A Workbook for Recovery, Monique Lang again provides a thoughtful and insightful tool with which to aid the process of healing from trauma. In a format similar to her first book, Journey to Wholeness: Healing From the Trauma of Rape, Lang's workbook sensitively provides factual information, but also recognizes the personal nature of trauma and creates oportunities for activities that may be individualized by the user of this book. This caring book provides supportive and constructive assistance to those healing from trauma and assures the reader that he/she is not alone and that there is no one "right" way to recovery. I almost bought an iMac but went with a PC instead. I bought AppleWorks for Windows and an AppleWorks book by C. Ann Brown (don't waste your money on the book). I picked up Stauffer's iMac book at the library and I found it to be really comprehensive. There is a large section on AppleWorks. Some iMac books are sort of cutesy, but Stauffer's book shows you how to actually do something with your computer besides changing how your iMac looks and sounds. Why did I read an iMac book when I own a PC? I have found that books on Macs are written better than books for PC's. Try Maria Langer's book on Mac OS 8.5 too. Macs and iMacs for Dummies are good sources too.

This is the one to get for IMac devotees

I bought an IMac and needed some kind of hard copy to go with it. I purchased five other books before this one. If only I had known about this book first I could have saved a lot of money. This is the only book you IMac devotees will need. It has everything, including info on Kai's Photo Soap which no one else has. The title How to do Everything is very apt. But everything should be in great big letters because it is EVERYTHING.

Excellent, comprehensive manual for any iMac user

I recently travelled back to the US to help my Dad get set-up with an iMac. While he loved the simplicity of the system, he did miss not having printed material to ponder (and no amount of "but we're saving the trees" would suffice). After an hour pouring over iMac books at Borders we chose this one (of course it's cheaper here!) because of it's thouroghness in covering the additional software included with the iMac. It has the best, most complete coverage of AppleWorks and Quicken of any book out there, as well as complete system coverage, setup information and and how to use the Internet with Navigator. I went back to Holland knowing my Dad can now figure anything out...excellent reference, buy this one!

MacHome Journal's HotTips Book Of The Month Oct/2000

Selected by MacHome's free eZine, HotTips Weekly

Book of the month for October 2000.

Of the plethora of iMac books released since the computer's inception, I found this the clearest and most comprehensive. I like the "DO" angle, as opposed to providing an endless list of technical information. It may not be the best choice for a power-user in a quest for in-depth geektech info (well... You should have the AppleSource CDs if you are a Mac professionnal!), but every beginner and newcomer would benefit from owning a copy.

An Unthreatening Approach to a Threatening Subject

It's the rare person who relishes conflict. Most of us live our lives either avoiding it, which never works for long, or expressing it in counter-productive ways. Even those of us who deal with conflict on a professional basis---I'm a divorce lawyer and mediator---are not immune to the physical and emotional toll that it can take on us (not to mention on our clients). With that in mind, I'm happy to report that Lee Raffel's new book, "I Hate Conflict!", is a useful, accessible, and unthreatening approach to a subject that most people dread. Drawing on a lifetime of hard-earned lessons (including an abusive first marriage), and a long career as a social worker and marriage counselor, Ms. Raffel looks at conflict from a variety of angles, but always with a view to offering sensible advice and real-world solutions. My guess is that she's an excellent therapist, because she has a client-centered approach that comes through loud and clear. The reader feels that he's in the same room with her, engaged in conversation with a wise and caring counselor, a counselor who knocks herself out to make her clients' lives more satisfying and less stressful. I recommend the book.

Very few people in the world enjoy getting in fierce arguments with their fellow man - and "I Hate Conflict!: Seven Steps to Resolving Differences with Anyone in Your Life" understands this completely. Offering many options to help people resolve their issues and strengthen their relationships with others, it's an ideal guide to anyone who wants a more peaceful resolution to their conflicts. "I Hate Conflict! Seven Steps to Resolving Differences with Anyone in Your Life" is highly recommended to community library self-help collections.

"I Hate Conflict" is rich with information around conflict and the people involved in it. Special care is taken for those of us who tend to avoid conflicts. It is difficult for us, who do not like conflicts to like a book about it or to even spend time with this topic. Lee Raffel tries successfully to make it as easy as possible. "I Hate Conflict" is factual, realistic, clear and to the point.

Lee Raffel ends each Chapter with a small amount of homework. It helps for a deeper understanding and more important to get the connection to ones own life.

I do like that she extensively quotes other important books to the subject and in the vicinity of it. Lee Raffel even encourages her readers to read other peoples work.

I do recommend "I Hate Conflict" for reading, reference and for just spending time with it.

I have added Lee's book to my Master Bibliography for all of my classes - conflict management, emotional intelligence, leadership, coaching and more.
She is so good at making it easy to understand and follow. This is a very valuable book to have around when you know that conflict conversation needs to happen.

The book was given to me as a gift. I cannot tell you how great it was, to start a Sunday Morning out, in such a positive way. Jesse James has a great sense of humor , but still profound. His namesake would be proud.
I hope he does another book soon. I am a new fan. Very impressed!

This was a very fast and funny read. I hope he writes another book soon. Does he do Motivational speaking? If he can talk as well as he can write, we may have a winner here.

Fast, funny, insightful and delightful!
