Sensible and caring guide for women with cancer

This book is a helpful guide not only to women diagnosed with breast cancer, but women (and men, too) with any kind of cancer diagnosis. I was fortunate enough to find Hester Hill's support group when I began my own treatment for ovarian cancer. Her wisdom (and that of the other wonderful members of the group) resonate throughout Woman to Woman. A combination of good science and sensible suggestions (DON'T blame yourself, work with your caregivers, learn to say Yes, learn to No), Woman to Woman is almost as good as a group - but only "almost!"

A reassuring and practical guide to breast cancer treatment

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, one of the first things I did was read a great number of books. I found there were three types: 1) books about the disease itself, 2) books about treatment and 3) memoirs. As I progressed through treatment and a series of subsequent breast surgeries, I found the books on treatment the most frustrating because they were so focused on the medical aspects.

What was not available then was a book like this, which is a very practical and reassuring guide through the treatment process. Written by two breast cancer survivors, this book has two special characteristics: 1) it is reassuring about the ability to cope with treatment, and 2) it contains a lot of good down-to-earth nonmedical advice such as what to take to the hospital to maximize your comfort after breast surgery.

This book definitely fills an important need, even as the number of books on breast cancer continues to multiply. Sadly a number of my friends have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last several years. One of the first things I do is buy this book and give it to a friend as she begins her journey. I encourage you to do the same whether for yourself or someone you love.

Warmly, clearly, directly written to dispel myths and fear.

An expanded version of an earlier paperback booklet, this wonderful resource reaches out and supports women across a wide range of ages and lifestyles experiencing the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis.

Written warmly, clearly and directly to each woman, the book addresses not only health-related matters but also personal and psycho-social ones such as spousal and child-related issues. It does not attempt to be comprehensive but provides up-to-date notes, resources, and bibliographical information.

The authors, Schnipper and Berns, know first-hand the reality of this diagnosis; each has been treated for breast cancer and is herself a wife, mother, daughter, friend, and professional. Hester Hill is an Oncology LICSW and Joan Berns, PhD., a very gifted writer.

I have given this book to numerous women...too many friends, relatives and acquaintances...have read it myself even though I have thusfar not become a statistic..but we are all part of this and so I urge you to get a copy, read, and recommend it. You will have saved a large number of fellow human beings from the terror of the unknown. FEAR FLIES IN THE FACE OF AN OUTSTRETCHED HAND BEARING LOVE AND INFORMED SUPPORT.

Wherever you live, a comforting guide to the care you need.

This easy to read, straight-forward, clear and compassionate book is filled with essential information that every woman who has faced this frightening diagnosis needs to know. The authors' gentle conversational style speaks to the reader like a knowledgeable friend. The comfort of their words originates from their own personal challenges coupled with their professional knowledge of what the journey entails.

Anticipating questions and personal needs, the book logically takes the reader through the process of treatment and recovery. It provides a foundation of solid information and resources. Despite the gravity of the diagnosis there is a positive supportive tone that acknowledges that a majority of women can emerge from this terrible ordeal and do it with strength and dignity.

It's so comforting knowing that one is not alone. The resources within this book apply no matter where a woman calls home. In this technologically connected world, a woman living a distance from a major metropolitan area can also find ways to navigate her care from reading this lovely book.

Knowledge is power. The authors clearly believe in the strength of their fellow sisters. This is their gift their way to use their considerable talents to assist others.

This book is fantastic! Its practical, step-by-step, reassuring suggestions and guidance are offered warmly and clearly from a woman who is herself a breast cancer survivor. Hester Hill is a breath of fresh air--from the specific tips on clothing, meals, and planning a hospital stay to making critical decisions about surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. A vital part of Hester's advice is her strong belief in support groups--as she, somehow, becomes part of your own support group through the compassion, love, wisdom, and down-to-earth knowledge that come through the pages of her book. Every word is a nugget.

Who me? I'll never be desperate enough to pay for a personal ad! If you've ever made that statement, you haven't read what these two professional copywriters have to say about it. This book is loaded with ideas that work. Even if you never place a personal ad, you'll find this book enlightening and entertaining. I especially liked the Foreword, he said, with his tongue in cheek!

This book has way more information than you'd think possible about how to write (or answer) a personal ad. If you've tried meeting people through newspaper ads before, and failed miserably, this book will show you why--and what to do next time in order to succeed.

And it's also a quick read, because it's packed with real-life examples of actual ads, success stories, and not-so-successful stories.

Finding a soulmate in a newspaper ad or out in cyberspace is dicey enough, but without a guide it's like trying to find a golf ball in a snowstorm.

After reading 25 words or less I feel all warm, fuzzy, and safe...no more barking up the wrong tree or running down blind alleys... this book helps you clarify your objectives and takes all the guesswork out of writing, and placing your ad, as well as helping you along once you decide to meet that special someone.

The thing that impressed me most was the personal "personals" experiences, they were honest, and fascinating. Having true-life excerpts made it very easy for the reader to feel comfortable. I felt like I was getting advice from a friend, unlike other how-to dating books that lecture or talk down to the reader making you wonder if the authors ever dated at all. Wonderful work! Kudos to Emily Calvo and Laurence Minsky!

As an HR professional, I've read a lot of resumes and over the years I've written them for myself as well. I have found that the use of "buzz" words and how these resumes are written catches the recruiters attention much better the the average resume. This is probably the 10th copy of this book I have purchased. I give them out to those looking for jobs and there are several copies in my professional library. This book not only tells you how to write an effective resume but gives you samples of buzz words and phrases. An excellent reference book.

WORD-UP!

Having recently purchased 16 books on the subject and a professional in the field, I suggest you'll be in deep trouble if one of your competitors reads this book before you.

It is, at once, the supreme effort on the market.

Best you read it FIRST and learn what makes a "rez-u-may" SELL. (You'll also learn to love "Peanut Butter Sandwiches".)

For those intensely serious about a great resume, I suggest two additional five-star books:

1. "Gallery of Best Resumes" by David Noble. Terrific examples of excellent layout and design.

2. "Resumes for Dummies" by Joyce Kennedy. All around good advice.

Follow the suggestions in these three books and you'll consistently write a winning resume.

Remember, "WORDS" can change your life.

Don't think so? Here are some that will: "Watch Out!", "Call 911!", "Earthquake!", "Guess What.", "I Want Volunteers.", "We're Downsizing.", and "I Do."

Still don't think so? Unless you're brain-dead, THESE WORDS will:

"Here's Your Pink Slip." "Where's My Parachute?" "I Need A Job." "What time can you come in for an interview?", and

"YOU'RE HIRED!"

When you hear the above, it's a right proper time to suddenly "Go Forth And Put Asunder".

Brandish & Vanquish with your secret weapon known as "My Killer Resume".

All competitors shall Be Afraid!

As a divorce attorney, I frequently encounter clients (generally women) who must reenter the work force or find better-paying jobs. At this time in their lives, they have low self-esteem and no idea where or how to start; therefore, I am constantly on the lookout for something that will assist them far more than the few months of rehabilitative alimony I might be able to wring out of their former spouses. Since coming across this book, I have recommended it to many clients. Ms. Hill's approach gives them confidence, direction, and the power to take control of their lives.

If you have had analysis with Rudin, this book is very weird - no metric spaces, no convergence theorems to speak of, no series - but it does have some very interesting stuff. Buck's explanation of things like open sets, the double integral, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus are really interesting. If you have the spare change, buy this and really look at it - even better - check it out from the library.

The book under review is an easily accessible introduction to Advanced Calculus for those at the upper undergraduate level. As a student, I found it to be a successful mix of rigor and insight, a particularly valuable quality considering the fact that the subject is oftentimes the pons asinorum to abstract reasonings and proofs for most students of mathematics.

The book begins with a relatively "rigorous" refresher on the concepts of sets, functions, and graphs; later on a bunch of so-called field axioms are thrown in, but the author didn't treat these "basic concepts" extensively as interesting subjects in their own right. Some topological concepts are introduced next, then sequence, continuity, and differentiation; in that order. Up to the last item, the semester course was concluded. Notice that this was only page 125 of a 600 page book, hence my inability to comment on subsequent chapters following that elementary discussion of differentiation.

Pictures appropriate to the particular discussion are available; whenever possible the author attempted to provide a more intuitive understanding of a deep mathematical idea by discussing an example from the real world or through a physical interpretation.

The exercises vary in difficulty, but some are particularly hard that a solution manual would be very much welcomed. The hints and answers in the back are too brief to be of much use in demystifying those seemingly mysterious and unmotivated tricks needed in particular solution.

The author encourages the readers to employ any tool of elementary calculus learned earlier, an understandable choice since it was actually his decision not to introduce an axiomatic development of the subject that would compel the readers to deduce a solution to a problem from "scratch".

I would highly recommend the book, even for self-study to the mathematical enthusiasts. Those who desire a not-too-formidable introduction to real analysis may find this classic enjoyable.

This book provides a very readable and insightful account of the material that is usually covered in two semesters of advanced undergraduate courses usually called "Advanced Calculus" or "Real Analysis." Explanations are clear and concepts are well motivated. The problem sets are well-selected, and are do-able after reading the relevant chapters. This book is highly recommended for engineers or scientists wishing to gain a deeper understanding of mathematics, and for math majors preparing for graduate study in real analysis. It is a great book.

The book was excellent, starting with the basics of sets and topology and build quickly to the traditional subjects of calculus. I particularly enjoyed the way the author was able to draw attention to the key ideas that come up again and again, the mean value theorem for example. I have never seen a better view of the foundation of calculus, and this book is never leaving my shelf.

This book is extremely well written and comprehensive. It is appropriately approaches the subject and addresses the audience (primarily undergraduates) in an elegant manner with a fair amount of challenging problems, though never overestimates the reader's previous knowledge or background. Time and time again, I've found myself digging back in this book finding more depth and content through each pass. This is by far the best Advance Calculus book I've come across for undergraduates.

After reading Ronnie's life story I have even MORE respect for him as a person not just an artist. It's amazing to me the lack of attention wonderful artists such as Ronnie Milsap and Johnny Cash, etc. are getting. If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, it is a MUST READ. If you are a fan of Ronnie Milsap or just a fan of life in general, this is a MUST READ! Ronnie and Co-Writer Tom Carter, present Ronnie's life in a sometimes comedic and sometimes sad manner. Ronnis IS a true to life "RAGS TO RICHES" story and I personally am thankful Ronnie has been through everything he has in his life. It has not only made him what he is today but has caused me to reflect on my own life which has posed many "situations" for me to grow from. Ronnie is an awesome individual and if you want a chance to get away from all the "[stuff]" on television these days, this is a book for you. The man born blind in poverty in the mountains of N. Carolina, disowned by his mother because she thought his blindness was a curse from God, raised by poor but loving grandparents, sent to the State School for the Blind on welfare, turned out to have the IQ on the genius level. Ronnie tells of how fascinated he was the first time he experienced a commode when he was about 6 years old. Now his home probably not only has 7 or 8 of them but probably has heated seats as well. PLEASE, if you never treat yourself to another gift, purchase this one. It is truly a gift that you should not miss out on. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

An American Success Story

Review Date: 2000-11-03
Born blind in the poverty stricken Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina, Ronnie Milsap grew up to become a self-made multi-millionaire and internationally known country music superstar. His prosperous life proves in America that any dream is achievable. But his Cinderella-caliber transformation was not merely professional. Dismayed that her baby was blind, Ronnie's disturbed mother abandoned him. He was raised primarily by his loving paternal grandparents although his well-intentioned yet somewhat hapless father was a constant presence in his life. Today he has been happily married for well over 30 years and is a doting grandfather when not out on tour entertaining his legions of fans.

Attending a state-run high school for the blind, the talented youngster gained independence but was subjected to the unchecked discipline of certain thuggish teachers. In college he considered a career as an attorney, but wisely determined music was more his speed.

In addition to the typical biographical data, Ronnie expounds on numerous subjects. Politically speaking, he expresses outrage over the Supreme Court decision (recent when this work was first published) legalizing flag burning. The conservative patriotic principles he advocates are a welcome change from the usual show biz liberal diatribes. That's just one of many stereotypes Ronnie Milsap's life has shattered.

A MUST-READ book for all Ronnie Milsap fans!

I have always had great admiration and respect for Ronnie Milsap. He has been a true inspriration to me for nearly 25 years. My piano teacher knew how much a role model he was to me as a child, and she used that to keep me from giving up. After reading the book, my love, respect, and admiration for him is 5 times greater! The book is beautifully written with so much honesty, emotion, and love. It made me cry, and it made me laugh outloud! This man is a phenomenon that we could all learn a lesson or two from. "It Was Almost Like A Song" inspired me all over again! I haven't read a book with so much feeling since I was in high school; I couldn't put it down at night to go to sleep! No Milsap fan would want to miss this one!

I have to say, I normally wouldn't consider writing a review for a text book. But this one is good.

In most of the financial classes I've attended, I am usually left scratching my head when introduced to new concepts because the text is so dense and the examples provided very rarely explain it enough. This textbook is so well-written that, although much of the material builds upon concepts introduced in earlier chapters, reading the earlier chapters isn't entirely required to understand the subject matter: each chapter stands on its own.

Also, Higgins's style is reminiscent of those fine classic textbooks from the mid-20th century, such as Elements of Style by Strunk & White and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, interjecting dry, and at times belly-laughingly funny, humor into the text.

This book deserves to be a classic.

This book is the best gift for those hospitalized or going through lots of tests. We first discovered this gem when it was given to my teenage son during one of his many hospital stays. He couldn't stop laughing! The book is so funny because it really nails how you are feeling about every procedure. We now give it to everyone as a get well gift when they are hospitalized. Everyone who has received it has loved it! It really brightens up an otherwise gloomy time. As another review states, though, make sure that the patient won't do damage to themselves when they laugh.

I just got home from quadruple bypass surgery and my wife gave me this little book to make me feel better. Of course, she's a retired nurse, so maybe I should have been more suspicious. The book sent me into so many fits of laughter that I was seriously worried several times whether I might either rupture my new cardiac arteries or re-split my sternum. It's absolutely hilarious. But I'd advise you to wait until the patient is well into recovery before giving it to him. Either that, or have a nurse handy. And for God's sake, don't let anyone read it before they go to the hospital. I'm ordering a copy for each of my doctors as a "thank you" gift.

The book is worth buying if only for the following chapter alone-Procedures and Diagnostic Tests: Your Life as a Laboratory Mouse. The bit about a mammogram has been the grist for e-mail funnies, and it is only one of the descriptions Hammer deliciously conjures. From the chapter on surgery, this is a snippet of her humor: "Postoperative Activities: Walking. As soon as you've stopped throwing up, they will get you out of bed and make you walk. This is the Lazarus therapy used in the Bible, and it worked quite well for him." This book is good for people on either side of the needle. A real gas!

I thought this book is hilarious and a definate worthwhile read. I work in the hospital, training to be a nurse, and it was educational to read a hospital experience from a patient's perspective. I had to laugh at how very true this patient was when it comes to the attitudes and behaviors of the medical staff. I was laughing so loud that many of the staff and patients themselves were looking like I should be the one admitted! This would be the perfect gift for any patient or medical professional. What I would like to see next is a book on the staff's perspective on a patient!

It's something that's great to read even while you're in hospital because you don't have to start at the beginning - you can pick it up from anywhere.I don't normally laugh out loud when I read, but I was absolutely rolling as in my hospital bed. I own a copy, and am borrowing it out to others! **Here's an idea - don't know what to get that friend that you are visiting in hospital who has already gotten 2 thousand flower arrangements? Order them a copy of this book - I promise that it will be the best gift they ever got. Even the medical professionals will find this a hit! Try out her other books as well!!

Just remember - try not to "bust a gut" while reading! Enjoy!

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2BQ4EWXI8X74C This book transcends genre -- it's a good collection of memoirs, entertaining style, nice splash of humor, an extremely detailed travelogue with beautiful photographs, a good description of technology, a touch of Science Fiction (since it is purportedly written by a Artificial Imagination program) and suffused with philosophical musing and last but not the least, a moving love story.

Even though it's obviously written by a Technologist, the book is very human. It is primarily about the immigrant experience, but Kalpanik is extremely observant and has an eye to look for the unusual, notice what stands out and build humorous side of people, places and his own life.

Wonderful! I am specially moved by his bitter-sweet love story at the end.

This book combines elements from good humor, a memoir, a scenic travelogue, a touching love story, science fiction and philosophy.

Whether you ever wondered about meaning of it all, or you want to read something light amusing, or want to see places like Seattle, San Diego, Nashville from the eyes of the writer, or vicariously live the life of a
student at University of California, this book is for you!

The author, purportedly an Artificial Imagination computer program simualting a life/career journey through the Hi Tech and yet very sdcenic world of California and Washington (Settle) is witty still though down to earth and funny! The book is written in a very conversational style, as if you are reading a letter from a close friend!!

Great Book, buy it Now!

Great book, love it! It's hilarious! I could not stop giggling, I cracked up page after page. Really Nice!

And so many nice photographs. I was traveling with the author, feeling his ambitions, his surprise, excitement and pain. And what a brave soul! He (yes, despite its claims to have been written by an AI program, this book is written by a loving, feeling, breathing human for sure!)--He is able to maintain his sense of humor even as he moves from one place to another, faces one set back after another! He always comes back!

Wow! What a story!!

Oh, And the love story in the end is touching.

I just started using this book and the workbook for a high school class that I teach, and hope to get a class set for next year! Finding this book made my automobile lessons a million times easier and better, and helped me explained things to my students much more clearly than I was able to in the past. The step-by-step pictures and directions in the activities, the diagrams, and the details of this book are wonderful. My students are at the age where they're preparing to drive and own a vehicle... this is the perfect book for my classroom!

I am currently teaching "Automotive Ownership" to high school students and I am using this book as a reference. It is a great book to give students the basic information about owning a vehicle. Many of my students do not know how a car works or how to treat their car, by the end of class they are prepared to own a automobile.

Great book and I suggest it to other teachers with a similar class.

We are a Home Educating family (12th year) and have 2 teenagers and 2 more coming up. After reviewing this book online, we ordered a copy, along with 2 workbooks as our son had requested "Auto Shop" as an elective this year. It is our primary text for the first semester, covering everything from purchasing your car to maintenance/repairs and basic auto care. Our son is getting more out of it than we could hope for and wants to know when there will be a sequel on 'customizing' your car! =) We decided to make it a required course/text for all teens in our fam who are looking to purchase/own their own car. We highly recommend it!!! Oh, and the CD that comes with the kit puts the 'icing on the cake', including all the administrative extras you, as instructor, will need.+++

Have you ever noticed how your mood is instantly elevated when you inhale the scent of a rose deeply and with purpose. The world seems like a better place instantly. Rose oil has a frequency of around 320 MHz. Flowers are beautiful on their own and can lift your mood with their fragrance or with their petals blowing in the breeze in nature.

So, what other secrets do flowers conceal? Apparently, they can help us to change our emotional state. The scent of roses is said to dispel anger, or so I have read! In this book, flowers are celebrated as natural healers which can help us return to a healthful state.

Our emotions can at times manifest themselves as a health issue and greatly affect our bodies. Dr. Edward Bach (1897-1936) believed that physical illness was a manifestation of emotional imbalance. He believed we can heal and balance the body with nontoxic methods.

Some of the remedies include:

ASPEN - For fear or anxiety IMPATIENS - For impatience, irritability and nervousness. MUSTARD - Severe depression WILLOW - For neutralizing resentment and bitterness VERVIAN - For tension and hyperactivity or overachieving STAR OF BETHLEHEM - For mental shock

There are also remedies you can take for sensitivity, disappointment, muscular cramps, skin rashes, recurrent ailments, critical attitudes and bad dreams.

Look into other health remedies like Arnica for injuries, Pulsatilla for nasal problems, Cantharis for cystitis, Chamomile tea for a restful sleep and Gelsemium for flu symptoms. Look for a homeopathic brand called: Oscillococcinum for symptoms of the flu in the winter. The theory is that a infinitesimal amount of a plant substance can stimulate the body's healing defenses.

The closer you can match your symptom to the remedy, the more effective it will be for you. I suggest reading other homeopathy books along with this one. I also recommend "Reference Guide for Essential Oils by Connie and Alan Higley" from abundant-health4u.com as they have the best products I have found so far.

This book is a wonderful introduction to both the philosophy and the practice of the Bach Flower Remedies. It provides a lot of information without overwhelming the reader. The book is arranged in three sections. The first is Dr. Bach's essay entitled "Heal Thyself" which is about how each one of us has the power and is capable of healing ourself, the second section gives a short, useful description of each essence. The third section is a wonderful list of numerous emotional states and the appropriate essence to use for each one.

If you're at all interested in learning how to treat yourself using these remedies, this is the book for you. I've had this book for approximately 6 months and it is well worn already!

Simple yet effective

Dr. Edward Bach, a skilled homeopathic physician, developed his own theory about the cause of disease. Dr. Bach believed that physical diseases begin as an imbalance in the patient's emotional well-being. By attending to emotions and weeding out harmful emotions from the patient's psyche, a healing trend can be initiated that assists the patient in avoiding future physical diseases. Treating emotional states addresses diseases while they are still at the energy level. Dr. Bach believed that the flower essences could even be helpful once disease had progressed to a physical manifestation. The flower essences do not replace other treatments such as homeopathy, but they can assist other treatments by soothing the patient's mental condition and initiating preliminary steps towards healing the imbalance that led to the disease in the first place.

This book is filled with wonderful information that the beginner can use to learn to use the flower essences to heal themselves and others. It is the basic text and everyone who is interested in flower essences should have this text regardless of what other texts they own as well. Bach thoroughly explains his theory on the source of disease and then each flower essence is examined, one by one, showing the emotional profile of the patient who would most benefit from each remedy.

The system is very simple and can be learned easily by the layman but it is very effective -- only 38 remedies cover the entirety of negative human emotions! Dr. Bach insisted that the flower essences be kept simple because he believed that their simplicity was a key factor of their effectiveness. Treating one's self and others with flower essences is simple to learn but it is also an art that one will spend the rest of their lifetime developing and perfecting.

Contains Dr. Bach's priceless gem!

Wonderful basic Bach Flower Remedies book. It also contains Dr. Bach's 'Heal Thyself', an amazing writing on illness, its character, origin, & healing. It gives a spiritual basis for illness, a much needed perspective in our modern world of medical materialism.
