I was asked my a corporate finance professor to purchase this book along with our school required text book. This book was a fraction of the size of our text book and packed a much greater punch. Just read this book and skip out on your textbook because the text teachers you nothing that can be applied to real life situation.

After dealing with fat hard-cover textbooks with hard-to-find answers, this book is refreshingly concise and useful. It sounds strange, but I could actually call this a "readable" textbook-- i.e. sit down and read it cover to cover-- which is an accomplishment for a textbook. Highly recommended.

This book has been around for a while and is useful even for people without a Finance background. As you proceed further in the book, the chapters get in to complicated issues in finance. Nevertheless its important for a manager to understand the financial implications of every decision. Strongly recommend.

I have to say, I normally wouldn't consider writing a review for a text book. But this one is good.

In most of the financial classes I've attended, I am usually left scratching my head when introduced to new concepts because the text is so dense and the examples provided very rarely explain it enough. This textbook is so well-written that, although much of the material builds upon concepts introduced in earlier chapters, reading the earlier chapters isn't entirely required to understand the subject matter: each chapter stands on its own.

Also, Higgins's style is reminiscent of those fine classic textbooks from the mid-20th century, such as Elements of Style by Strunk & White and The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham, interjecting dry, and at times belly-laughingly funny, humor into the text.

This book deserves to be a classic.

This book is the best gift for those hospitalized or going through lots of tests. We first discovered this gem when it was given to my teenage son during one of his many hospital stays. He couldn't stop laughing! The book is so funny because it really nails how you are feeling about every procedure. We now give it to everyone as a get well gift when they are hospitalized. Everyone who has received it has loved it! It really brightens up an otherwise gloomy time. As another review states, though, make sure that the patient won't do damage to themselves when they laugh.

I just got home from quadruple bypass surgery and my wife gave me this little book to make me feel better. Of course, she's a retired nurse, so maybe I should have been more suspicious. The book sent me into so many fits of laughter that I was seriously worried several times whether I might either rupture my new cardiac arteries or re-split my sternum. It's absolutely hilarious. But I'd advise you to wait until the patient is well into recovery before giving it to him. Either that, or have a nurse handy. And for God's sake, don't let anyone read it before they go to the hospital. I'm ordering a copy for each of my doctors as a "thank you" gift.

I almost soiled myself.

The book is worth buying if only for the following chapter alone-Procedures and Diagnostic Tests: Your Life as a Laboratory Mouse. The bit about a mammogram has been the grist for e-mail funnies, and it is only one of the descriptions Hammer deliciously conjures. From the chapter on surgery, this is a snippet of her humor: "Postoperative Activities: Walking. As soon as you've stopped throwing up, they will get you out of bed and make you walk. This is the Lazarus therapy used in the Bible, and it worked quite well for him." This book is good for people on either side of the needle. A real gas!

I thought this book is hilarious and a definate worthwhile read. I work in the hospital, training to be a nurse, and it was educational to read a hospital experience from a patient's perspective. I had to laugh at how very true this patient was when it comes to the attitudes and behaviors of the medical staff. I was laughing so loud that many of the staff and patients themselves were looking like I should be the one admitted! This would be the perfect gift for any patient or medical professional. What I would like to see next is a book on the staff's perspective on a patient!

This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who has had any kind of run-ins with anyone (doctors, nurses, etc.) from the medical profession. This book makes even the most painful and depressing moments hilarious. It's something that's great to read even while you're in hospital because you don't have to start at the beginning - you can pick it up from anywhere.I don't normally laugh out loud when I read, but I was absolutely rolling as in my hospital bed. I own a copy, and am borrowing it out to others! **Here's an idea - don't know what to get that friend that you are visiting in hospital who has already gotten 2 thousand flower arrangements? Order them a copy of this book - I promise that it will be the best gift they ever got. Even the medical professionals will find this a hit! Try out her other books as well!!

Just remember - try not to "bust a gut" while reading! Enjoy!

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2BQ4EWXI8X74C This book transcends genre -- it's a good collection of memoirs, entertaining style, nice splash of humor, an extremely detailed travelogue with beautiful photographs, a good description of technology, a touch of Science Fiction (since it is purportedly written by a Artificial Imagination program) and suffused with philosophical musing and last but not the least, a moving love story.

Even though it's obviously written by a Technologist, the book is very human. It is primarily about the immigrant experience, but Kalpanik is extremely observant and has an eye to look for the unusual, notice what stands out and build humorous side of people, places and his own life.

Wonderful! I am specially moved by his bitter-sweet love story at the end.

This book combines elements from good humor, a memoir, a scenic travelogue, a touching love story, science fiction and philosophy.

Whether you ever wondered about meaning of it all, or you want to read something light amusing, or want to see places like Seattle, San Diego, Nashville from the eyes of the writer, or vicariously live the life of a
student at University of California, this book is for you!

The author, purportedly an Artificial Imagination computer program simualting a life/career journey through the Hi Tech and yet very sdcenic world of California and Washington (Settle) is witty still though down to earth and funny! The book is written in a very conversational style, as if you are reading a letter from a close friend!!

Finding this book made my automobile lessons a million times easier and better, and helped me explained things to my students much more clearly than I was able to in the past. The step-by-step pictures and directions in the activities, the diagrams, and the details of this book are wonderful. My students are at the age where they're preparing to drive and own a vehicle... this is the perfect book for my classroom!

I am currently teaching "Automotive Ownership" to high school students and I am using this book as a reference. It is a great book to give students the basic information about owning a vehicle. Many of my students do not know how a car works or how to treat their car, by the end of class they are prepared to own a automobile.

Great book and I suggest it to other teachers with a similar class.

We are a Home Educating family (12th year) and have 2 teenagers and 2 more coming up. After reviewing this book online, we ordered a copy, along with 2 workbooks as our son had requested "Auto Shop" as an elective this year. It is our primary text for the first semester, covering everything from purchasing your car to maintenance/repairs and basic auto care. Our son is getting more out of it than we could hope for and wants to know when there will be a sequel on 'customizing' your car! =) We decided to make it a required course/text for all teens in our fam who are looking to purchase/own their own car. We highly recommend it!!! Oh, and the CD that comes with the kit puts the 'icing on the cake', including all the administrative extras you, as instructor, will need.+++

Have you ever noticed how your mood is instantly elevated when you inhale the scent of a rose deeply and with purpose. The world seems like a better place instantly. Rose oil has a frequency of around 320 MHz. Flowers are beautiful on their own and can lift your mood with their fragrance or with their petals blowing in the breeze in nature.

So, what other secrets do flowers conceal? Apparently, they can help us to change our emotional state. The scent of roses is said to dispel anger, or so I have read! In this book, flowers are celebrated as natural healers which can help us return to a healthful state.

Our emotions can at times manifest themselves as a health issue and greatly affect our bodies. Dr. Edward Bach (1897-1936) believed that physical illness was a manifestation of emotional imbalance. He believed we can heal and balance the body with nontoxic methods.

Some of the remedies include:

ASPEN - For fear or anxiety IMPATIENS - For impatience, irritability and nervousness. MUSTARD - Severe depression WILLOW - For neutralizing resentment and bitterness VERVIAN - For tension and hyperactivity or overachieving STAR OF BETHLEHEM - For mental shock

There are also remedies you can take for sensitivity, disappointment, muscular cramps, skin rashes, recurrent ailments, critical attitudes and bad dreams.

Look into other health remedies like Arnica for injuries, Pulsatilla for nasal problems, Cantharis for cystitis, Chamomile tea for a restful sleep and Gelsemium for flu symptoms. Look for a homeopathic brand called: Oscillococcinum for symptoms of the flu in the winter. The theory is that a infinitesimal amount of a plant substance can stimulate the body's healing defenses.

The closer you can match your symptom to the remedy, the more effective it will be for you. I suggest reading other homeopathy books along with this one. I also recommend "Reference Guide for Essential Oils by Connie and Alan Higley" from abundant-health4u.com as they have the best products I have found so far.

This book is a wonderful introduction to both the philosophy and the practice of the Bach Flower Remedies. It provides a lot of information without overwhelming the reader. The book is arranged in three sections. The first is Dr. Bach's essay entitled "Heal Thyself" which is about how each one of us has the power and is capable of healing ourself, the second section gives a short, useful description of each essence. The third section is a wonderful list of numerous emotional states and the appropriate essence to use for each one.

If you're at all interested in learning how to treat yourself using these remedies, this is the book for you. I've had this book for approximately 6 months and it is well worn already!

Dr. Edward Bach, a skilled homeopathic physician, developed his own theory about the cause of disease. Dr. Bach believed that physical diseases begin as an imbalance in the patient's emotional well-being. By attending to emotions and weeding out harmful emotions from the patient's psyche, a healing trend can be initiated that assists the patient in avoiding future physical diseases. Treating emotional states addresses diseases while they are still at the energy level. Dr. Bach believed that the flower essences could even be helpful once disease had progressed to a physical manifestation. The flower essences do not replace other treatments such as homeopathy, but they can assist other treatments by soothing the patient's mental condition and initiating preliminary steps towards healing the imbalance that led to the disease in the first place.

This book is filled with wonderful information that the beginner can use to learn to use the flower essences to heal themselves and others. It is the basic text and everyone who is interested in flower essences should have this text regardless of what other texts they own as well. Bach thoroughly explains his theory on the source of disease and then each flower essence is examined, one by one, showing the emotional profile of the patient who would most benefit from each remedy.

The system is very simple and can be learned easily by the layman but it is very effective -- only 38 remedies cover the entirety of negative human emotions! Dr. Bach insisted that the flower essences be kept simple because he believed that their simplicity was a key factor of their effectiveness. Treating one's self and others with flower essences is simple to learn but it is also an art that one will spend the rest of their lifetime developing and perfecting.

Contains Dr. Bach's priceless gem!

Beating Depression is that rare book that is both easily readable by anyone with interest in this area, and highly accurate from a clinical and research standpoint. It skillfully blends hope, advocacy, practical information, self-help techniques and resource lists into a succinct text. The information and recommendations it contains are based on solid research evidence and current best practices. It stands out as a valuable addition to the books that clinicians can confidently recommend to patients and their families. It is also a book that clinicians with responsibilities for setting policy in health systems can use to help educate a broad range of stakeholders about important aspects of depressive illness.

"Beating Depression" is in a class by itself.
First, the writers have a collective wealth of clinical, academic and research experience that informs their work. Content is current and authoritative. Second, "Beating Depression" is very clear and easy to read. It is well-organized and practical, --and obviously designed to help people and their families get the care they need for depression. I use it, and highly recommend it to friends, colleagues, and patients.

Dr Jackson-Triche has written one of the best consumer-oriented guidebooks on depression. In plain, approachable writing the usually difficult-to-understand clinical definitions of depression are made clear and understandable to a lay person without "dumbing down."

Those who suffer from depression are treated with respect and caring, and are truly given hope along with solid and trustworthy information.

Having spent decades trying to understand and accept my own depression without shame and hopelessness, this book has helped me become proactive in my treatment. The concepts unpacked in this book are now as familiar to me as they are to my doctors and therapists, and I can ask for help in an empowered way. This is the most hopeful news I can pass on to anyone who has suffered from depression.

Everyone who has experienced flight (and those who long to) can relate to the sheer emotion that it evokes, sometimes from deep within ones soul, often pleasant, sometimes not. As you are experiencing the sensations you may frequently be too caught up in the moment to express yourself with words, well, here they are. Yes they are others experiences, but you will find very many which match yours close enough to be called your own. Flight as many other "Romantic" adventures has it's way of engraving itself on your heart. These are exceptional expressions of a wide variety of flight forms, there's something here for everyone. A must for the enthusiasts bookshelves.

Cliff Jernigan has played an active role in shaping the government policies that contributed to the success of the U.S. semiconductor industry - now America's largest manufacturing sector. In "Beyond High Tech Survival" Mr. Jernigan offers practical advice in a highly readable primer on finding the opportunities from, and avoiding the pitfalls of, industry-government interactions. This book is THE source of information on the public policy impacts on high tech manufacturing, marketing, R&D, and investments. It is a must read for anyone with a stake in industry-government relations -- which is everyone, from corporate executives to political science students, and from local planning commissioners to members of Congress.

Many companies, particularly in the high tech sector, don't appreciate how important government policy can be to their profits. These companies are frequently surprised when new government rules change the competitive landscape. Worse yet, they never realize they missed out on potential profits that could have been achieved by taking advantage of government programs that their taxes helped fund. Cliff Jernigan's book, Beyond High Tech Survival, sets out the risks and opportunities that can be achieved from government policies and programs. Ways to reduce taxes, take advantage of government incentives and open foreign markets, are just some of the possible opportunities assessed. Advice on avoiding pitfalls, such as piracy of intellectual property, legal problems from violating export control or sexual harassment laws, and frivolous security lawsuits, is clearly set out. Beyond High Tech Survival is an easy read and jargon free, and well indexed to help the busy executive find what is needed. Jernigan has had long experience in tax, trade and legal issues, and this practical book will be a good reference source for busy executives.

Recommended for policy makers and CEOs.

Public policy left unattended can adversely affect corporate profits and the wise executive pays attention to Federal, state, and local issues just as they pay attention to research and development, production, and marketing.

He covers the obvious issues of tax policy, and international trade but also addresses the emerging issues of shareholder lawsuits and intellectual property rights. This comprehensive book covers over 30 significant policies and is a great check list of how government actions effect businesses today.

I recommend this book for the public policy maker who needs an up to date primer on the issues facing high-tech companies. I also recommend this book for corporate executives who can recite every step in how to build a 450 mhz chip but pale at the idea of entering the political arena.

Jernigan makes the case that the savvy executive gets involved.

Cliff Jernigan is a long-time member of Tax Executives Institute, and in his book, he does what TEI members do best: He shares his insights and experiences. His review of the major challenges faced by high-tech companies and other businesses is comprehensive and comprehensible. From the research tax credit to the alternative minimum tax, from capital gains to the independent contractor issue, Cliff does an excellent job of presenting complicated topics in a clear and concise way. I found the coverage of overseas operations and plant site location to be both interesting and informative. Whether you are a tax executive, a member of senior management, or a government official, this book provides much grist for mill.

Having been a long time marketer for over 30 years and a self-described "student" of the business, it's easy to feel as though I've seen it all. Ms. McMurtry's book changed that for me. For once, it's apparent that someone in the marketing field "gets it". The strong emphasis on emotional marketing, a key component to why people buy; the emphasis on lifetime value of the customer; the real life examples of the wide range of topics she covers, should be required reading for anyone in a marketing function. It tells us point blank that if you are not in business to create emotional ties and experiential relationships in the marketing you do, you're not likely to grow your business--and that's why we are in business, isn't it? Thank you Ms. McMurtry for covering so much valuable ground in an easily readable volume.

While most books tell you what needs to be done, this one gives specific detail on *HOW* to do it. Within 10 minutes of cracking open this book I found several tools that will help my company determine the value of various customer segments - something we've managed on gut feel rather than actual customer data. The author also provides multiple checklists to help with taking a company's key management through processes to identify where marketing programs need improvement. Like many companies, we're undergoing a significant change in our business strategy due to geopolitical change and her tools will undoubtedly help us manage the change more wisely.

Running a private music studio can be challenging, especially when it comes to the business end of things. Even though I have no employees, I found Ms. McMurtry's book immensely helpful. I especially appreciated the tips on identifying and connecting with my best customer. Learning how to write a marketing plan to support what I wanted from my business enabled me to keep my focus. The book helped me attract the type of students that best fit my needs while running my studio as an efficient, profit generating entity. I highly recommend it to sole practitioners, like myself.

Maybe Not Peace, but Harmony

With Book Three of her Holy Ground trilogy, Judith Moffett draws together the universal and the personal in ways seldom seen in literature. The Earth is under the not-entirely-benign rule of aliens who have made it impossible for most humans to reproduce; the aliens want humanity to learn to live in balance with nature, but nature and human nature seem to be innately at odds.

Enter Pam Pruitt, a "Gaian," which is to say, a human who works with the aliens to educate humans and guide them toward a sustainable existence. Even though the Gaians are doing humanity a huge favor in trying to help reclaim the human ability to have children, they are hated as collaborators by a planet full of resentful people.

But Pam seeks to find a way past human prejudice; indeed, past human hard-wiring to survive and prosper by pillaging the world's natural resources. Despite a quarter century of almost zero births, the situation has grown critical: eco-balance has reached a tipping point, and so has the aliens' patience. Humanity is told that as a species they have one final year to shape up, or face near-extinction.

As Pam works furiously to maximize humanity's chances for survival, she finds that part of the key to the salvation of all lies with her own personal salvation: she begins to explore a new, previously unsuspected ability as a latter-day shaman, and to access wisdom, and healing, from what very well may be a higher plane of existence.

This book is rich with literature, archaeology, anthropology, and literate insight. Its message is that harmony and peace are not necessarily one and the same, and that inner struggle can be transformative. For the reader, this novel (which stands alone from the earlier books quite well) is an object lesson in the rewards of a story that doesn't predigest every single point the author wants to make. There's plenty were to enjoy right off, and plenty to mull over for a long time to come.

Third Trilogy Volume Is the Charm

The third volume of this trilogy is the best read of the three, especially in terms of character development. Although it continues the story thread of the first two books' concern for the future existence of human life on earth, it can easily stand on its own. The plot is very good, too, and I found the integration of the rock art fairly clever although maybe with a little too much detail for some.

New Holy Ground gets broken. A wonderful finale to the trilogy and though I know we have to say good-bye to our heroines and heros, I am sad to think I won't get anymore of their tale. The new reader will come on board this new future without too much difficulty. If you like sci-fi, if you like well-developed characters, if you like twists and turns, if you like to travel like a shaman, if you think we would be wise to accept the earth as a living being, and if you like to turn pages, go ahead and buy this book! Great read.

The Bird Shaman is not only a mesmerizing story about Mormons, Aliens, time travel, child abuse and ecological danger, it is also a psychological thriller about what lies beneath the layer of consciousness. Its treatment of dreams alone would make it a tour-de-force, but it doesn't stop there: it ranges into science, history, primitive rock art, and religion as well. The characters are so rounded that they come across as people you have known for years, from the former child prodigy who lost her gift, to her grumpy former lover helplessly searching for his dead best friend in his sexual partners, to the beautiful Mormon TV child-star fleeing from a predatory grandfather, and finally to the hairy and implacable aliens who have banned all further reproduction on earth. This is science fiction written by a poet, and it reads like a dream. It is The Time Machine of the twenty-first century, a meditation upon what it actually means to "plant" and tend a future in flesh and on earth. Buy it for everyone you know!

This is not only a magnificent conclusion to Moffett's Hefn trilogy but is a truly satisfying read in its own own right--that is, if you haven't read the first two books, you can still love this one. As always, Moffett's prose style is of the highest quality, and she combines it with psychological examinations of characters you'll come to care deeply about, although you may not always like or approve of them. Moffet continues her examination of what it might mean should an alien race attempt to force us to save ourselves, and our environment, from ourselves and combines it with a fascinating look at the strengths and weakness of Mormanism in relation to community. The shamanistic rock paintings found throughout the Southwest play a significant role in the novel and add considerably to its depth. This book is science fiction, no question of that, but, unlike so many works in that genre, "The Bird Shaman" is no piece of hackwork escapism. It's a true work of literature that will move you and make you think while giving you hours of enjoyable reading.
