My father gave me Gracefully for mother's day. I then went to see Valerie Ramsey at the Tattered Cover in Denver when she did a book signing there. I was so impressed! She is wonderfully open and honest about her own life and how she and Heather Hummel came to write Gracefully. I was inspired to read the book cover to cover! The book is so easy to read - simple to understand and effortless to apply the concepts contained therein to one's own life. This is a book that would be perfect for anyone. May I only grow older (I am 41) as gracefully as Valerie Ramsey has!

The Balance of Beauty

Review Date: 2008-05-25
Valerie Ramsey understands the true wisdom of beauty--that even though it is outwardly visible, its true source comes from within. Perhaps that is why all treatise on beauty should be written from the perspective of someone, like Ramsey, who has lived a life that allows for true beauty to flourish. Aging is bounded by time, beauty is not. And so, Ramsey, in prose that is clean, compelling, and--most of all--entirtely applicable, demonstrates what is so obvious and yet, for our youth obsessed world, often overlooked in terms of how to cultivate beauty, grace, and soulfulness throughout our lives.

This book Heather Hummel and Valerie Ramsey is full of wonderful advice for women of all ages. I found Valerie Ramsey's lust for life inspirational; she is a woman with a lot to teach. The book also gives practical tips such as how to look great in a photograph, and I will use it as a reference tool for years to come. It is an easy and interesting read, and I would highly recommend it.

Great book to give to the women you care about.

I found this book to be so easy to read with practical useful advice on creating a life that you want. It was inspirational at the same time, making me reaffirm my beliefs that one can accomplish whatever one puts one's mind to. I have passed this on to my mother and recommended to my girlfriends and aunts, but the over-riding message of this book is applicable to both genders. Worth the read. I took away tips to apply in daily life as well as future planning/dreaming.

Grindhopping: Building a Rewarding Career Without Paying Your Dues

Grindhopping provides a look at living life outside the box. The decision to take the veer off society's typical path is a difficult one, and Vanderkam offers assurance that, provided you're willing to put in unfettered enthusiasm and hard work, this path can be a wildly successful one. She also outlines the practical, nitty-gritty details on how to make this lifestyle choice work.

Grindhopping strikes a chord.

Vanderkam offers practical advice for jumping out of the world of the 9-to-5, bosses, and the low and middle rungs of the corporate ladder. The title of the first chapter illustrates the author's straightforward tone and approach for the rest of the book: "Always Be Your Own Boss: No compromises, no excuses". She offers compelling reasons to take this path and practical advice for getting there (e.g. how to find reasonable health insurance, how to keep expenses down, and how to maintain multiple projects in the "Craig's List Economy" to keep the money coming in). Vanderkam draws on her personal experience as a freelance writer as well as a number of case studies of "Grindhoppers" who have found success or are on their way. She also addresses the downsides and risks of striking out on your own head-on and offers sound and empathetic advice for dealing with these. But she also confronts the downsides and risks of staying in the grind to your long term career success and satisfaction.

As with other career/entrepreneur books, Vanderkam stresses the importance of planning, goal setting, saving money, and, of course, networking. Yet, she delivers her advice and personal experiences in a way that feels somehow more authentic than with other books I've read. For example, in the networking chapter, she talks about her own tendencies towards shyness and how she overcomes and works around these. She opens up her own life and experiences to the reader just enough and in a way that is not self-indulgent. She succeeds in striking the right balance between focusing on her case studies and her own trials, tribulations, and successes in the world outside of the grind. Her writing is honest, and at times refreshingly quirky. (Check out the section on hunting mastodon and you'll see what I'm talking about.) Highly recommended.

Tired of killing time in your cubicle? This book's for you!

Review Date: 2007-05-12
Why is it that so many career books--unique among how-to books--advise you to settle for less? Diet books don't tell you to settle for being overweight; relationship books don't tell you to settle for dysfunctional partnerships; cookbooks don't tell you to settle for takeout. Yet career books often tell you that the only way to get ahead is to settle for putting in time that feels more like doing time. If you're not the kind of person who can ignore how much cubicle slavery feels like any other kind of slavery, then these kinds of self-help books are no help to you--and no wonder. As Grindhopping makes clear, the days of slow and steady wins the corporate race are long gone. So even if that is your comfort zone, you'd do well to read this book instead of all the others premised on a corporate model that's all but extinct. Grindhopping actually examines those statistics that are always cited to discourage free-lancers and entrepreneurs and exposes how they're skewed. But this is not some unrealistic fantasy book for impractical dreamers. Grindhopping covers common pitfalls first-time entrepreneurs fall into--often by blindly following that same outdated corporate model. It also addresses the very real concerns that keep so many chained to their cubicles: student loans, credit-card debt, health insurance, risk management. But unlike career books that only acknowledge the risks of putting your dreams into action, Grindhopping lays out the just-as-real risks of putting your dreams permanently on hold. In a rapidly changing world, survival of the fittest means survival of the most flexible, and this book practices what it preaches, providing real-life examples from every field imaginable of how the shortest distance from here to your goals isn't necessarily straight up the corporate ladder. Grindhopping refuses to ignore the question: If sitting at a desk all day, every day, putting in face time isn't the most efficient way to get the experience and contacts you need to achieve your goals, then what are you still doing there? Instead this book offers concrete strategies for networking, project juggling, delivering results, and learning what you need to know outside of school. Nor does it advise an all-or-nothing mentality: if hopping out of the corporate grind for a while enables you to gain more quickly the experience and contacts you'll need to hop back in later at a higher level, then more power to you. Conversely, if you need a steady stream of cash to pay off debt or need to learn about a particular industry, then a temporary stint in the daily grind may be to your advantage. The main thing is not to let temporary steps along the path to your goals turn into permanent dead-ends, but to weigh risks and make decisions based on whether or not each move you make brings you closer in some way to where you ultimately want to go. Instead of telling you to abandon your dreams, Grindhopping tells you how to make them a reality.

I read this book and enjoyed it. Vanderkam has her finger on the pulse of the new work world. Younger people (particularly entrepreneurs) don't like the ball and chain of 'a' desk or 'a' job. I'm finding a lot of people that are experimenting with their careers are doing exactly what Laura describes - they have their paws in a lot of different projects and jobs. I currentlh have 4 myself (but I'm the classic Gemini she describes in her book...easily bored!) If anyone younger has been in the work world a couple of years and is asking themselves the question, "is this all there is?" needs to read this book.

Hopping around your career options
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-10
Grindhopping:

1. Hopping out of the corporate grind and into the work you want.
2. Building a rewarding career without paying your dues.

For the most part, the author is talking about developing skills that will allow you to "hop" into the corporate world at the point YOU want to without putting in all those years of meaningless drudgery and traditional corporate ladder climbing.

The author lays out the characteristics essential to successful Grindhopping, urging her readers to follow their dream and get someone else to pay you to do it. She offers as much 'sage' advice as a 29-year-old can, and gives illustrative examples of her points, shoring them up with statistics. But, I wonder if the 'reader' is hearing what she is saying.

While the external environment and internal motivation may differ between the true Grindhopper and the corporate ladder climber, many of the character traits and advice for success apply to both.

Grindhoppers are people who either by desire to be their own boss or lack of options, have a combined fiscal acumen, the ability to long-range plan and set goals, with a lot of self-control to succeed at controlling their own career destiny, much like the corporate climber.

The advice offered for potential Grindhoppers--know where you're going, work hard, network, get experience, stay ahead of the curve, pay attention to detail--has a vague business school ring to it.

The difference is that the Grindhopper IS the boss - either of her one-woman operation or of others who desire to climb her company's ladder!

While I'm not convinced Grindhopping is as revolutionary as the author wants you to believe, the book is worth a read, especially if you allow it to provoke questions about your own career choices.

I used the techniques from one chapter to quickly recover from a fall on concrete, where I hit my head, and a personal sorrow. I handled the physical aspects separately from the fall and on the memory of both was able to resolve the pain and sorrow so now I can think about it easily--as easily as normal memories. Thank you, L. Ron Hubbard. It works. Get it. Try it. Use it.

This book is very helpful but not necessarily a walk in the park to use. It's all about weeding through various things that make life difficult and how you can work your way to a better state of mind. You have to be willing to work for it and if you follow the steps in the book, you get amazing results. If you don't do what it says in the book or only do it half-heartedly, you really don't get much out of it. I give 5 stars because it really does deliver. In using the book, sometimes you have to examine things about yourself that aren't so easy to face. Once you push through those things using the book, it's pretty beneficial.

Handbook for Preclears

Review Date: 2003-08-24
This book is for those who are in the need of change in their lives. It isn't about money; it isn't about winning friends and influencing people. It is a self-help book for those people who want to change the conditions of their life by viewing their goals and problems and past situations that relate. It gets a person better acquainted with himself.

It was written many years ago, but the techniques work IF one reads the book throughally and applies each step. The author is deceased, and the book is not published by the author but by the
LRH Library which is run by the Religious Technology Center which is a [type of religion]corporation.

There are many references in the book where you can go for further services--however, you might search out alternatives on the Internet, because there are individuals in what is called the "FreeZone" who can deliver services, too. If reading this book makes you want "more" then shop around.

In this Handbook for Preclears the dynamic principle of existence, which is "survive" is introduced. It is an important datum, because it is what all things have in common...it is the common demonator of existence. Of course, there are degrees of survival from bare to successful, but the datum gives one a way to look at things.

That isn't the only datum that is useful in this book. It isn't a good book for someone who just skims the reading material and doesn't throughally apply the exercises. That is why I rate it a 4 star instead of 5--...

This is a valuable resource for those wanting a beginning point for research and for reference.

I had access to older editions of this book in our public library, and finally found one in a used bookstore. I was thrilled to find out it had been updated. I was disappointed to a degree, however. The older editions had many small bodies listed in it, which are nowhere to be found in this edition. I really enjoyed reading about some of these churches (I remember one was down to a single church). On the other hand, I think it is a plus that more coverage is now being given to non-Christian groups as these have grown in recent years in this country.

I still give it five stars, I just wish they had left some of the smaller groups in the book.

Always A Fair Representation Of America's Many Denominations

Extremely helpful when researching various group's beliefs. Unbiased, and fair to the individual Christian denominations that number in the hundreds here in America. So many churches. So many groups you may never have heard of. For example; when a certain minister in my church gave testimony that he once served in the Church of the Living God denomination as a pastor, a group formerly unheard of to me, I used this handbook for research into that group's background. I love studying the different beliefs that are a part of this nation's freedom to practice them, according to the dictates of our hearts.

Identity Crisis, But Still Helpful...

Review Date: 2006-07-03
Islam, Judaism, Gnosticism and more are included along with Christianity within the ever-expanding scope of this classic reference book. Supposedly selection is limited to those groups within the "Abrahamic-monotheistic tradition," but that's arguable, since it includes for ex: Mormonism (multiple gods throughout universe), Nation of Islam (succession of gods thru time), Unitarian-Universalism (not required to believe in any particular religious belief), and pantheistic groups. Other inclusion/exclusion oddities: Native American Church--in; Voodoo and Santeria--out. Spiritualism--in; Hinduism and Urantia--out. Unification Church--in; Taoism--out. Nation of Islam--in; Scientology--out. There are also inconsistencies regarding where within the book groups are listed: Messianic Judaism is not listed in Christianity, but in Judaism, yet Church of God and Saints of Christ ("Black Jews") are under Christianity and not Judaism. Sufism is listed under Islam, but Nation of Islam is not. Including such incompatible religions under the title of "Handbook of Denominations" implies theological (as opposed to social) toleration and some underlying fundamental agreement, which perhaps risks contributing ever so subtly to the psychological preparation for acceptance of an ecumenical religion that sacrifices biblical truth for the sake of societal unity. Fortunately, the authors say "future editions of the Handbook may require a different title" (though they do not suggest the possibility of narrowing the book's scope). Other books have used titles that more accurately convey their contents--"Dictionary of Cults, Sects, Religions and the Occult" or "Encyclopedia of American Religions," no problem.

The Handbook's strength remains its Christianity section, which makes sense of over 100 denominations by organizing them in families (31 alone in Baptist family) and goes beyond mere statistics (self-reported, by the way) to convey interrelationships in a historical narrative style. Even so, some groups get scanty treatment, for ex, Christian Identity groups are only hinted at by including minor groups like Branch Davidians, while others, like a certain nationwide TV ministry, are not even mentioned. Given both Identity's track record as a starting point for domestic terrorism and its increasing acuumlation of followers thru TV/internet, I wish the Handbook would mention prominent ID groups and their [...] serpent seed doctrine. One modern phenomenon this 12th edition has included, though, is "Community and New Paradigm Churches," saying that these "mega-churches" are "congregations that actually function as small denominations." Overall, despite concerns, the Handbook is now more up-do-date, and I strongly recommend it, but exhort discernment, as it not only displays subjectivity in terms of inclusion and self-reporting, but also in narrative description, for ex: Islam is "subject to unfair stereotyping," and "it seeks to build a just and peaceful society based on a rational moral code."

Our church pulled out of the United Church of Christ in 2001, and our denomination search committee needed a resource to get more information. We were very happy to find this book. At your finger tips are brief sketches of practically every major religious group in the United States. Some of the essays are very brief in nature, while others are pages long. Still, it is an excellent starting point, and for most people who just want the basic facts, it is all the information a person could want on the religious movements in the country. And one of the other things I like about the book is that as far as it it is possible, the authors take a very objective position. No trace of bias or sectarian coloring mars the book, as far as I can tell. There is no way of discerning which denominational perspective the authors write from, and that's the way I like it.

This was the first book I was ever able to read (and by "read", I mean memorize from cover to cover). I made my parents read this book to me so many times, they still can (and occasionally do) recite some of its most quotable lines: "Last time I saw your mother, she was over by the pickle jars, runt," and "She never believes me," for instance, are perennial favorites. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially in the face of the recent wave of sickly-sweet children's picture books now crowding the publishers' shelves. The illustrations are fun, if a little dated, and the characters are very human -- even the whatsit. All in all, this book has bite, and may give your children the guts to stand up to the whatsit in their own lives.

This book is great for young readers. Any child who has a fear of going down in the basement or a fear of anything should read this book, it also has a good morale. Parents should get this book because it shows their children that they can conquer their fears. I think children will also enjoy this book because of the humor and a good lesson to be learned. Overall I think this book is great for parents and children. I would recommend this book for children ages 4 through 10

I got this book when I was a kid, and read it probably a thousand times. I was just like Harry - afraid to go in strange, dark, and unknown places. My heart swelled when Harry stood up to the Whatzit, in the interest of protecting his mother. I definitely related to that. I'm sure lots of other kids did, too.

I bought a copy for my son (I kept mine for myself...sentimental reasons), and it's become one of his favorites. We have a wonderful time when we read it together.

"Hill 568" continues the story of Michael, first introduced in "Welcome to Vietnam" as an 18-year-old Colorado boy drafted into the Army to fight in a war he doesn't like or truly understand.

Although the series is fictional, it is based upon fact, and the battles described in "Hill 568" were all too horribly experienced by real Vietnam veterans.

Despite the scattering of humor and non-battle-related sideplots, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others in the series...perhaps for the very reason that it was largely war. Nonetheless, it's important to read if you want a clear and complete picture of the entire series.

This book is the second of a four-part series -- five, if you count "The Road Home," which was written under Ellen Emerson White and is the conclusion of Michael's story.

I liked this book because it had tons of action scenes in it. I liked it because it was about the army and lots of people in my family went to the army. I also liked it because it got me to know that the Vietnam war was really horrible. Lots of people were killed. It let me know that war is a horrible place o be especially when you are the frontline soldier. That's why I liked this book.
I would recommend this book to readers that are age like me a freshman. the reason I would recommend it to freshman's(9th graders) is because it is a long book and you wont understand some of the profanity in it. Recommending to ages like me are good because you would already know some back ground about the Vietnam war. I also recommend it because it has lots of action on shooting, fighting, blood, and gore. That's why I would recommend this book to freshman's(9th graders).

As it was written near 2000, a chapter or two suffer from obsolescence already, but the excellence of the rest of the content make it very forgivable.

As the MIS Director for a large educational institution, I have felt the impacts, first-hand, of recruiting and retaining top IT professionals in a tight job market. Yet there is clearly a methodical approach that can be followed to target the "right" employees and, once hired, ensure that they remain happy and content within your organization.

This book does an excellent job of outlining that process in a simple, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach. The author not only covers all aspects of the hiring process but also reminds us of best practices that we too often (and too easily) forget to ensure success once we bring top players on board.

This book was pertinent and informative. I intend to pass it around to all of the managers on my staff.

A Pleasant Surprise!

I didn't actually buy this book but won it as a door prize at an industry trade show. I tossed it in my briefcase and didn't give it much thought to it until I was stuck in an airport on my return trip home. Although I don't hire a great number of "information technologists", the book was filled with excellent advice for any manager. His advice applies to the dynamics of locating, interviewing, hiring and retaining exceptional individuals. I like to underline when I read, and when I finished the book I realized I had underlined just about everything! Don't let the title throw you off because this is an excellent resource that truly cuts across all industries. He has his hand on the pulse of human nature, and an incredible insight into those people who understand how (technically) the world works.

I have already given a copy to a friend that owns a small company and has found it a challenge to find and retain good people. If my friend follows the program outlined in the book I am sure he will see the results. One thing I really liked about Adamsky's writing style is that it's light on philosophy and academic drivel and packed solid with the experiences of someone who has obviously been in the trenches.

A boon to job seekers and providers alike

I feel better prepared to operate in today's challenging job market after reading this book.

As an IT professional I have had occasion to be on both sides of the interview desk. This book clarified and reinforced many of the beliefs that I formed from these experiences. However, I derived an even greater benefit from those sections that challenged my preconceptions. Mr. Adamsky's use of logic, examples, and self-deprecating humor helped me to see things from a different viewpoint. I am confident that a company can only benefit from the encorporation of his strategies.

Hope No Matter What, Helping Your Children Heal After Divorce by Kim Hill is a very tender and important book. In each chapter, as you read with your children, Kim helps you have words to speak into the hurts, questions and fears most asked by your child. They will know they are normal - and that other people feel the same way they do and other people also need God to help them. If God has helped others, perhaps they can trust Him to do it for them. This book is a comforting book. There are soothing words that will benefit the entire family. I HIGHLY recommend this book. Kim's words will reach deep into your heart.

A Must-Have For Parents, Church Leaders, Aunts, Uncles....

Hope No Matter What: Helping Your Children Heal After Divorce
Kim's unique method of connecting with children is so AWESOME in this book. Hill is so tender in the way she brings God's promise of Peace, Love and Hope (no matter what) to children in the midst of their vulnerability. Each devotion and interactive activity reiterates God's love for us and HIS promise that He will never forsake us-NO MATTER WHAT! How COOL is that!!! We as parents, aunts, uncles, church leaders, school teachers, and friends need to be reminded of this as well as we journey through life's bumps. I have shared this book along with Kim's CD by the same name, to several friends who are in the midst of divorce as they comfort their children. Reading and experiencing this book with your child can bring you closer as you explore God's LOVE for each of you through this most difficult time in the life of your family.

This is everything a devotional for kids of divorce should be

This is everything a devotional for kids of divorce should be--short, easy to understand, colorful, comforting and helpful. This is kid-friendly right down to the layout. There are free-form titles and drawings, multi-colored scripture verses, a special space devoted to getting a response to the content, and a concluding prayer that a parent can pray over their child.

This is designed for parents to read with their children. Though it was written with younger ones in mind, children of all ages, and even adults, can benefit from the content. Simple truths, like the ones found here, comfort and encourage when our hearts are hurting.

This collection of 32 short devotions is divided into eight sections. Each section represents one of the eight songs on the Kim Hill CD Hope No Matter What (2002). The CD does not come with the book, but would be worth getting because of the overlapping content.

Each devotion starts with a line from one of the songs. The first song is "Hold Me Jesus" by Rich Mullins. How could I not like a devotional that starts out with the lines from one of my favorite songs?

Stories and thoughts that Hill shared with her children in the aftermath of her divorce follow. It concludes with a verse of Scripture. All of this fills one page. On the adjacent page, there is an attractive space for children to write and draw their response to a simple activity. The book is wider than normal--7 x 9 inches--to provide plenty of space for this interactive section.

It would be easy to breeze through the book quickly, but the recommendation is two or three devotions a week.

I'm not aware of any other books like this. It's a valuable resource for parents and children that have experienced the tragedy of divorce.

Long overdue!!

What an amazing tool Kim Hill has provided to help children begin to heal from the pain of divorce. As an elementary school teacher I've watched an overwhelming number of children suffer because of divorce. Several years ago my own child faced the reality that her parents were about to walk separate pathways. Many nights I sat down with her to try and answer all the tough questions her little mind was filled with; questions I didn't always have the answers to. What I would have given to curl up beside her and venture through a book like Hope No Matter What. This book facilitates the process of healing via powerful reminders of God's love and faithfulness. I highly recommend it (and the CD by the same title) to any family walking through loss. Not only will Hope No Matter What help your children heal from the pain of divorce - it'll help prepare them for life's other challenges by teaching them to rest in God's arms and the promise of His love.

When I realize how faithful my niece, Kim Hill, is to being open about herself to the world in a manner that can only come through the power of God's Holy Spirit, I am amazed. Most of us hide or run from being honest about our troubles; even in the church. From the beginning, Kim was willing to give up her music career by going public about her divorce, rather than hide the fact as some were counseling her to do.

In the years since her divorce, Kim's music, and now her writing, have reflected her crying out to God and the peace that she continues to receive.

Her book, "Hope No Matter What," is a reflection of the manner in which Kim is able to minister to others, especially those who have also suffered the pain of divorce. 1 Peter 4:10-1, "As each one has received a gift, minister it one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God...If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen."

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 describes God as the "God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

I thank God that Kim has chosen to use the comfort she has received from God to help "comfort those who are in any trouble."

This book will be an excellent resource for any pastor or counselor to help a parent in helping their children heal after divorce.

I have given a copy of this book to my pastor.

A great resource for those planning a wedding on a budget! This book is great for both novice and expert Ebay users. For novices, there's a whole section that explains how to sign up and bid on Ebay. The most helpful part of the book for me was the search words for Ebay. Often times, wording is everything in finding the right item, and this book definitely helped out in that department.
