Great Book for XSL and DOM!!

Review Date: 2000-10-05
About half of this book is very Microsoft-specific (HTML applications, behaviors, etc.) However, the sections on XSL and interacting with the XML DOM are outstanding and contain much better explanations and examples than I've seen in any "pure" XSL book! I consider myself an XSL expert, but I still learned a great deal from this book. It's enabled me to write simpler, more concise and more efficient transformations. You can skip the Microsoft-specific stuff if you want and this book is still a great value.

Excellent Starting Point

This book is an excellent starting point for those new to the wireless community, as well as those technology managers who include wireless products or services in their portfolio.

The book is written in clear, easy to understand language and has no shortage of real-world examples designed to convey critical concepts. The tips given in the book, which focus on specific exam material, are plentiful yet not overwhelming.

My only recommendations for improvement include improvements to diagrams and charts, and more exam practice questions - maybe on a CD or something?

I highly recommend this product, as it's an excellent resource given the price point.

I am currently still reading this book, and I am planning on getting my certification. The book is written in a very concise, clear and easy to understand manner. Everything is explained with clear examples: every concept explained is easily grasped, and the details fall nicely into place. This is by far the best written manual/study guide I have seen on the subject.

I took the Wireless# exam today and passed after using this excellent book. The book is extremely well written and easy to follow. Even if you already know Wi-Fi pretty well, chances are you might not know a lot about all the other wireless standards out there. As a previous reviewer said, this book gives you a nice broad introduction to all the major wireless technologies currently in use. The information is highly current as the book just came out this year. I recommend taking the exam, as preparing for that will ensure that you have a good grasp of the contents of this book. Even if you are already a CWNA, it's still worth reading this book. Be warned though that the exam expects you to have thorough knowledge of all the standards described in the book including relevant frequencies, ranges, etc. I recommend the practice tests on the CWNP site if you intend to take the exam. In short I highly recommend this book for anyone trying to get a grasp of all things wireless.

This book was amazing for me because my teacher was not very good and we skipped several important chapters (most notably ALL of plants). Thus, it was great that it went through a lot of information in a really friendly and quick manner that was SO fun to read. I really think I would've done abysmally on the AP test without this book because I enjoyed going through it.

However, I do think it is a little too brief sometimes and I noticed that on some detailed questions and especially the free response on the AP i felt a little underprepared because I didn't know that much detail about subjects, making for not so good essays. However, the night before, I had glanced through the Cliff's notes book and was really really impressed. There is A LOT of information in it but I think it's the best if you want to be assured a 5 and you need something throughout the year in your AP bio class. It covers a lot, yes, sometimes unnecessarily, but it covered all that information in an easy to read manner. (also, i thought the practice MC tests were a little too easy compared to the real thing)

In conclusion- 5 Steps to a 5 is the best AP book I have ever seen in any subject because I really enjoyed reading it and I don't think I would've remembered that much information if I had been just passively reading some other normal book in 2 weeks. Get it if you have less than 3 weeks to study.

If you have more than a month/need a book for your course, get Cliff's and work through it steadily. You will be ASSURED a 5.

After viewing several books, including PR and Barron's, this is by far the best one. It isn't too lengthy and explains evrything in a way you will understand it. It includes Chapter Key Points at the end which define everything you need to know and gives you questions with solutions after every chapter so that you can reveiw your materials. It helped me get through my AP Bio class. The sample tests are also excellent and extremely accurate.

Someone suggested this review book for me last October, and I decided to get it to have it for Biology AP. The whole year I was basically lost or behind in class because of my other AP classes and extracurricular activities. About a month before the AP testing, I decided to "review" with the AP book. I read every single word and took few practice tests. This book is very comfortable read and I loved the side comments and jokes. My AP score has not come in yet, but I felt confident after the testing. I am hoping for a 5, but like I said, I studied a month before the actual test. I also used the Five Steps to a 5 for the World History AP test, and I got a 5 on it. If that isn't convincing, I don't know what else to tell you.

I simply looooove this book. The books I used for my AP bio was the Cliffs book and this book. The two go along so well together!

What I love most about this book is that it is really fun to study. While the Cliffs book presents facts point by point and summarizes well, this book actually makes you feel sort of like (a little hyperbole here hehe) reading a novel. The way the author writes is really cute. There are a lot of little jokes, and in the organic section, he actually makes you get on board a tour bus into the human body. Corny, yes, but cute and funny. At the end of the organics section, the bus gets eaten by a macrophage or something. And there was this :::Aplause::: in really big fonts that made me wonder what it was about. When I got to that section, I discovered that it was a standing ovation for the actin-myosin tango that explained how our muscle works. By the way, this was the ONLY book through which I could understand how the muscle worked.(Not even the cliffs book!)

The practice tests are good, but I think the Cliffs book does a better job in the essay part. But there were information not in the Cliffs book but in this book only that showed up in the AP exam! I don't quite remember but it was some kind of thing that controlled whether the cell was to grow or not. I remember being delighted to see the familiar word during the exam. (I thought something like, hey! This was the thing in the Mcgrawhill book! So cliffs wasn't the bible after all!) Oh and this book does a really good job of presenting the genetic disorders like the down syndrome and phenylketonuria and stuff like that.

I think studying with the cliffs first, reading this book next, doing the practice tests (I actually bought the cliffs 5 ap bio practice tests and it was pretty good, too.. although I only did two of its tests) would prepare you pretty well for the exam. I EASILY got a five out of those books. Yeah~~ I didn't give or throw away this book so that I could refer to it later, and maybe read it when I need help from the boring bio textbooks.

This is a very good book for gas turbine engine technology. It is helpful over the whole subject, but having detailed sections of individual engines (really the best sellers) was an extra bonus. It's in my work bookcase, one of only a few.

This volume is the best publication for aeronautical gas turbine technology. It is a powerful tool as a reference and as a didactic implement.

Theory. The development of theory is quite simple and straightforward. Being intended for technicians, the mathematical level is really easy, nevertheless the associated phenomenons are solidly explained. If the reader is looking for a more advanced maths dissection, he has to search a different book, conversely this treatment is the best complement to theoretical study: here concepts came alive and the mathematical set of solutions to equations are translated in real stuff.

Materials and technical evaluation. The edition copes with the advanced techniques introduced in more recent designs and products. The previous editions were full of excerpts from manufacturer pubblications or other technical papers, the current one is enriched by new illustrations and detailed explanations of advanced research. Drawings and graphs were the best facets of former editions and still they are, literally boosting reader's learning curve.

Engines. A wide selection of engines is avalable as examples, each one deeply dissected, showing typical arrangements and design solutions. This accurate study of construcion details and manufacturing techniques is explanatory since it shows the real article as designed, produced and maintained, focusing on each part functionality and it is real as it gets!

Perfect

This book is what you need if you want to know HOW aircraft engines are made. Since it's thought for technicians, it doesn'cover (almost) at all thermodynamics, no math, just a few basic physical principles on aircraft gas turbines. This is the real point: more photos, shematics, diagrams then equations (rigor mortis).

You will learn how are Gas Turbines made, what kind of engine is currently being used in what kind of aircraft, how is the fuel system made, plus a much more.

Buy it without esitation.

Outstanding Book for Technicians

Review Date: 2007-04-16

This is an outstanding book by a knowledgeable author that provides the basic know-how and skills that a technician who maintains or just wants to learn or study aircraft gas turbine engines will find useful and helpful. The book is well written in a readable and easy to follow format that provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of jet propulsion. The author clearly presents the concepts and principles of modern gas turbine engines with no complicated formulas.

The reader will learn the various components of a gas turbine engine including the intake design, compressors, turbines, combustion chamber designs, and the jet pipe and how thrust is produced as well as the modern maintenance, repair and overhaul techniques and philosophies.

The book has great explanations, diagrams and figures that the reader will find useful and helpful. I recommend the book not only to technicians but also to beginning aeronautical and mechanical engineering students who need a basic but comprehensive understanding of gas turbine engines and how they are maintained.

Profusely illustrated, in very clear language, the book discusses in absolute slow motion all the intricate maneuvers, taxiing, takeoffs, climbs, patterns, approaches, landings, instrument, multi engine, tailwheel, sailplane, skiplanes(yep!) and a lot more.

Every time I read this book I pickup something new. This is an invaluable resourse especially for the student pilot!
Each time I go up in the air, and I come back and read the book, I can say "'aha' thats what was happening, need to try this next time" ! Helps you consiously tone up your flying skills and understand whats going on in the air.

also, a great companion on those days you can't fly :).

I used an earlier edition of this excellent book while I was learning to fly the Piper Cub. I found it very helpful, especially when I was sitting down in the evening and trying to figure out what I'd been doing wrong that morning (or less often, what I'd done right). I was using Wolfgang Langeweisch's fabled "Stick and Rudder" at the same time and for the same purpose, and believe me, the FAA did it better! I found it especially helpful when it came to grasping the ideas of pattern work, final approach, and short-field and soft-field takeoffs and landings. I recommend it highly to the new student pilot.

This book is a must have for caregivers or anyone who has a family member with Alzheimer's. You can read it through or just pick out chapters that will help you at the time, but the biggest help to me was Chapter 12 about Approaching Death. It gave me the comfort and help that I needed. I've read many books on the subject, but this has been the most helpful yet because it is based on love.

A book that packs a powerful message about Love

Review Date: 2000-10-23
This is a tremendous resource for people who believe in the healing power of Love. Frena Gray Davidson has written a very spiritually centered book that will inevitably help any caregiver and their loved one.

She speaks about how we'll see the "divine child" untouched by darkness or sickness - our loved one - emerge in this process. And she states that we must listen to the feeling behind the words. That little statement has changed my life. When someone asks for their mother, who may have passed on decades earlier, they're really seeking comfort and security and reassurance. We need to hear their feelings that lie in back of their words.

She goes on to say that 30% of language is verbal, the rest is expressed in body language and behavior.

Further on she makes the observation that Alzheimer's patients are sensitive to the thoughts of those around them and to always give plenty of Love, both in word, action and thought.

She states that "unconditional Love is not a measure, it is a flow. You cannot give it or get it, you can only be part of it. When you love a person with Alzheimers, clarity and awareness come to that person." [p149]

The other wonderful point she makes is that so much of our disappointment in Alzheimers patients is tied to our notion of their "proper" mortal identity. Your mother doesn't know she's your mother anymore, but you can value and cherish who she is in the here and now. Don't live in the past but nurture the childlike qualities she is expressing in the present.

Tons of good advice. The other book I'd recommend for anyone dealing with Alzheimers is "Science and Health with key to the Scriptures" by M. B. Eddy. It is a terrific sourcebook on powerful prayers that heal and restore. It is the "how-to" book of prayer.

Frena shows you how to get thru a day at a time and most of all how to keep yourself intact. We get lost in this disease, it consumes whole families. She shows you how to listen, your loved one is still within this person afflicted by this disease, you just have to listen carefully and you will see the person you love is still inside and has alot to tell. She shows you how to cope. Frena is my strength, she gave me the tools from reading her book 3 years ago. This book is my foundation and Frena is an angel. No other book affected me as much as this one. Frena Gray-Davidson is the ultimate "been there, done that" person in Alzheimer's care. Her book is a support group that can always be with you, ready to speak to the issues that concern you now and prepare you for what is likely to concern you in the future. All parts of this book will help you meet the challenges of dementia care, however several chapters are of special value. Chapter 2, Before Diagnosis and chapter 4, Family Crisis Alzheimer's Style guide families in the early stages of the disease. Chapter 11, Knowing When To Let Go, answers some of the tough questions about placement in a care facility. The final chapter, Moving On, gives guidance for that time when caregiving is no longer the top priority. In keeping with her theme not to lose the person in the process of coping with the disease, Ms. Gray-Davidson leads us away from using psychiatric terms to label behaviors and thought patterns which result from diminishing cognitive ability. She explains what may look like paranoia as "a reasonable fear response, given the limitations of the disease." She makes what is often labeled delusional thinking easier to understand as "memory which has drifted into some point in the past." She writes with compassion and humor, creating therapy for the caregiver and family members. The book is interesting to read and easy to understand. As a Geriatric Care Consultant, I have often loaned my copy of The Alzheimer's Sourcebook for Caregivers to my clients. Most of them return it with the comment that they have purchased copies for themselves and for family members. This started with the 1st edition and is continuing with the 3rd. I can make no higher recommendation.

Everything is in here, from historic information about the 1877 rainstorm of snakes in Memphis to current listings of the state's best fishing streams. This book will make a great "stocking stuffer," and it's out just in time for Christmas. Anyone who has the least connection to Tennessee should own this book and read it cover from cover. This is a really good book about a state I love to visit. I especially liked the chapter about the Civil War in Tennessee. One of the most fascinating stories involves Cravens House atop strategic Lookout Mountain. During the Battle of Chattanooga the house served as the headquarters for the Confederates and the Union on the same day. I think the tragedy and chaos that must come in little anecdotes like that really personalize a major conflict. There are tons of stories about real people and delightful destinations for day trips in this book.

He is a bicycle riding mouse who is always in search of food for his very large family. After he discoveres that humans don't like it when mice dig through their trash, he develops a plan to make his talents helpful for people. His efforts pay off and he becomes a hero to his family of mice and to the humans who benefit from his efforts.

Even the youngest of children will understand the themes of this book. Children who may see themselves as insignificant in a busy household will learn great lessons from Anatole. Anatole is a Caldecott Honor Book. Even though this book is currently out of print, it should be searched for at your local library. Nevertheless I will look for other books from Eve Tutus. Vive Anatole!!

I am past 50 years old now, and have read thousands of books, but one of my very favorites is Eve Titus's "Anatole".
I even still have the actual book that I read all those years ago. It's in great shape and the illustrations by Paul Galdone are perfect and very "French".
You should buy a couple of good cheeses and introduce them to your child after you read Anatole to them, or if they read it themselves. and they will remember that with loving fondness for the rest of their lives.

Whoever reads this magical book will soon be starving for cheese!
After all those years, I can still see the little French mouse and his comrades in my mind, bicycling into Paris late at night for their cheese run.
Everything about this book is positive and upbeat and a wonderful influnce on children of all ages.

I still love Anatole and read it often. I highly recommend it.

Ephraim Suhir's new book, "Applied Probability for Scientists and Engineers", makes the power of theoretical statistics accessible to scientists and engineers through numerous examples and practical applications. His in-depth experience dealing with the manufacture, mechanical performance and reliability of electronic and other components, as well as his background in theoretical statistics make the author eminently qualified for such a task. This book ought to be on every scientist and engineer's bookshelf as a handy reference for a wide range of practical applications --from large-scale aerospace and building structures to microelectronics. There are a number of areas where statistical methods, especially some new little-used applications detailed in this book, can be used to great effect, but they have been largely inaccessible. The author is to be commended for making statistical methods more readily available for everyday applications.

The content of this book is probably one of the most exhaustive that covers both introductory materials and rather wide-ranging and advanced applications of probability in various engineering disciplines. It is useful for engineering students who wish to see the applicability of probability to real world problems. The main strength lies in Chapter 15, which presents examples of some engineering systems that, involved sophisticated probabilistic analysis. The remaining chapters deal with more advanced topics without the painstaking rigor of the theory involved. They serve as a quick reference to most probabilistic problems encountered in engineering applications and are best suited to practitioners who merely want to know how to use results. These will also fit in well as notes for training course as more detailed insights and discussions would have been supplemented and the practical limitations of the results would have been explained during the course.

Dr.Suhir has recently published a very well reviewed book entitled "Applied Probability for Engineers and Scientists", McGraw-Hill, 1997, that has an excellent treatment of applications of the theory to practical problems. In addition to its scholarship, what struck me about the book was how well it was written.

Dr. Suhir's book "Applied Probability for Engineers and Scientists" belongs to the leading monographs in the field. It is well known among specialists working in probabilistic modeling. In Germany several research projects have been carried out in electronics, mechatronics and MEMS based on the concepts and approaches described in Dr. Suhir's book. This book presents the state-of-the-art knowledge of probabilistic approach to engineering. It describes the major concepts, methods and fundamental tools of applied theory of probability. Unlike reference books that focus on only a few aspects of probabilistic methods, Suhir's book explains all of the basic tools in the field of probability analysis for engineers and applied scientists. The main objective of this excellent book is to be suitable for students, young engineers and young scientists, but it is also an important source of knowledge for practicing and research engineers, managers and college professors in various fields of engineering. The book contains many examples that demonstrate the importance of probabilistic methods for reliability engineering in various fields of application. "Applied Probability for Engineers and Scientists" can also be used as introduction into the world of probability for design, production and quality engineers, decision makers, research scientists and students who are or wish to be engaged in probability engineering, e.g. in probabilistic failure analysis, quality control and related fields. With "Applied Probability for Engineers and Scientists" you learn a lot about the full range of probabilistic concepts, from the introductory to the advanced level, and gain a deeper understanding in this important area of engineering approach. You can find a lot of very valuable practical examples and hints that demonstrate the key role that probabilistic methods can play in different fields in science and technology.

Summer vacation June 6, 2004, the day after President Reagan passed away. Rolling thru Abilene Kansas I made a quick diversion at the Eisenhower Museum which ended up taking up the entire day. Fascinating exhibits, first I went to the gift shop where the clerk recommended this autobiographical book. Born 10/14/90, he tells of early life in Abilene, West Point, WWI, the 1919 transcontinental convoy, refining the tank corps with Patton and how they defied death twice, Panama, Pershing, MacArthur, London, D-day, Berlin with many entertaining anecdotes. Next at the Visitors Center view the 25 minute film. Next tour the Eisenhower Family Home. Next go to the Museum, it takes about 1 or 2 hrs and the D-Day exhibit is unforgettable as you emerge from a Landing Craft ramp on to the Normandy Beach Panorama. Next proceed to the Library, there is an exhibit area on the 2nd flr. Next go to the Place of Meditation which is final resting place, 34th President, wife Mamie, and first-born son. On Feb 6, 1968 77 yr old Eisenhower hit a hole in one while playing at the Seven Lakes Country Club in Palm Springs. On the par 3 104 yd, 13th hole using a 9 iron. Of the presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower probably ranks as one of the best all-around athletes. At Abilene High School Dwight Eisenhower played center field and in his senior year the team lost only one game to the KU freshmen. On the football team Eisenhower played right end. At West Point the 5ft 11in, 180lbs Eisenhower was halfback / linebacker. Sports writers in the fall of 1912 referred to him as the "Kansas Cyclone." The most memorable game was with Carlisle led by Olympic hero and All-American Jim Thorpe. Eisenhower and teammate Charles Benedict succeeded in stopping a Thorpe-led drive by using a double-tackle on the legendary halfback. But a deft maneuver by Thorpe in a later play sent the two West Pointers crashing headlong into each other. They were temporarily stunned and removed from the game Carlisle won 27-6. In 1913 Ike injured his leg in football practice jumping off a horse and sat on the bench as Knute Rockne and Gus Dorais of Notre Dame used an innovation called the forward pass to surprise West Point. Recommended viewing: John Ford's The Long Gray Line with Harry Carey Jr. as Eisenhower; and The Longest Day. Rockne's crash site memorial in Bazaar, KS is 100 mi SE. Or head 30mi east to Fort Riley for the US Cavalry Museum where Buffalo Bill and Custer were stationed, I picked up 2 books "My Life on the Plains" and "Boots and Saddles".

Entertaining Recollections

In "At Ease" Dwight D. Eisenhower entertains the reader with recollections of his life up to the end of his military career. Organized chronologically, he tells the tales of his Abilene years, his time in the Peacetime army, the ordeals of World War II and his postwar migration toward political life.

On the pages of this book we learn of Ike's ancestors, his immediate family, his youthful interests and his courtship of Mamie.

Ike brings us into a series of "what if" situations which could have changed history. What if he had been admitted to Annapolis, rather than West Point? What if his football injury had prevented his commissioning? What if he had been sent to France in World War I? Ike lets us into his hopes and frustrations.

An early intra-war adventure was his participation in a cross country truck convoy which introduced him to the breadth of his country and to the need for good roads which he would advance decades later with his promotion of the Interstate Highway System. During the intra-war years Ike served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Washington and in the Philippines. His disagreement with MacArthur's impressions of the Bonus Army and his disapproval of the Chief Of Staff's personal involvement with its rout provide insight into Ike's character evaluation as well as his own developing values which would guide his later public life. During this period his friendship with George S. Patton matured and their professional interest in tanks kept a technology alive.

Approaching World War II, Ike's timely return from the Philippines and his performance in war games in Louisiana positioned him for the call to leadership.

Assigned command of Operation Torch, the American invasion of North Africa, Ike's involvement among rival French factions marked his advance into a form of politics. At this high command level, Ike became more deeply involved in interaction with political leaders, particularly Winston Churchill. With the transfer to Europe, his involvement in the Great Crusade deepened.

With victory achieved, Ike became involved in occupation issues with the Soviets which lead to his increasing mistrust of them. He relates some insightful and some humorous incidents during his service as Chief of Staff. During his time as president of Columbia University, Ike tried his hand at education and civilian life.

This book is very well written in an easy to follow style. It is a collection of memories, not a full biography. Ike tried to avoid stories which he reported in "Crusade In Europe" (See my Amazon.com review). "At Ease" holds the reader's interest while providing insight into Eisenhower's life and character.

I must admit, I was surprised when I read this one (after putting it off a number of years). Eisenhower did indeed have a knack for story telling and this becomes quite apparent with the first read of the first page of this book. This work gives us an inside look into the mind of a truely great man. I, like a couple of other reviewers here, was quite delighted with the candor, and insightfulness of this President. Actually, I found the work to be quite refreshing in this area...it is so unlike many of the autobiographies of some of the more recent presidents. Anyway, this book is well written and extremely informative and very, very readable. I highly recommend it to any history buff and highly recommend it to anyone having even the slightest interest in this individual the times he lived in. Recommend you add this one to your libary as you will no doubt want to give it a reread.

Learn about Eisenhower the man

Recently I went and toured the Eisenhower farm in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. It was a facinating tour (Given by Ike's personal physician and family friend) and when it was over I asked the gentleman what book I should read to learn more about Eisenhower. He recommended this one and a fine recommendation it was.

One nice thing about Eisenhower is he had a gift for story telling and he puts that gift to good use here. You discover when reading his books that they have a very comfortable feel to them. No dry read here. Eisenhower had a real talent for writing (He didn't use a ghost writer but wrote his books completely on his own) and you come away with a better appreciation of the man's intelligence and strong wit.

I was also surprised in the book at how much candor Ike shows. One half expects when reading a book like this you would get a lot of political stories or things to try and justify some of his political choices while President but that is not the case. It really is a book that the title says it is. Personal stories that Ike liked to tell his friends. The result is we get a nice look at the man. Not General or President Eisenhower but the man himself looking back at his life as a soldier, husband and father.

One note on this book. WW II is only lightly covered in this. Eisenhower covers that subject in "Crusade in Europe" which I also recommend.

If you're are interested in learning more about Ike and his life, this is a great place to start.
