I bought this book because of my confusion with index funds after reading different advertisements from newspapers and websites. The result of my learnings are three limit orders I just placed for different sector funds.

This book is written objectively without a slant towards a specific product. Also, written for the inexperienced as well as the professional trader. It provided some real insights as to how trading is accomplished (in plain English).

The bing "WOW" was seeing how I was being penalized as long term investor in mutual funds because of the annual tax distribution. Also, the majority of funds do not beat the S&P500 index!! Why invest in them when these new investment resources are available?

Highly recommend this book to all levels of investors.

This book begins by explaining the basics of generating publicity, and then takes the reader step by step through the processes.

From creating a 'hook' for your product to crafting news releases and pitch letters, Hatchigan covers it all. Bonus Points - concise tips with real life examples of strategies that work, are scattered throughout the book. Easy to use templates help the amateur, and even a professional could use the book as a quick guide to prepare for television and radio appearances and use the many resources in the back of the book.

As an author, I intend to implement many of the suggestions in How to Be Your Own Publicist, and recommend the book to anyone like myself - someone eager to maximize publicity efforts.

As Bing Crosby used to sing, you've got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative ...

Knowing how to attract attention to your book or your blog is important. Being able to create not only an impression, but also a memory - and a good one - is also important. How to Be Your Own Publicist shows you how to do both.

Good Introduction, With MEAT for Experts

Review Date: 2006-04-17
How to Be Your Own Publicist is written by an award-winning writer and publicist. This made me a bit nervous right away; I was afraid that the book would either be overly technical and thus inaccessible, or extremely basic (I've had some experience with overly basic business books).

Thankfully, I found the book to be neither. How to Be Your Own Publicist finds a great middle ground between people who just want to get attention for their cause/business/writing/blog and people who are getting ready to head up the PR department in their own small business. The book is easilly accessible for those with no marketing background, with plenty of meat for people with more experience.

The most valuable parts of the book for me were the sections on creating press kits and writing press releases. I'm looking at moving my podcasting beyond just a hobby, and I learned a lot that I can use to promote both my podcasts and myself as a podcaster. I'll be making use of those ideas in the very near future.

There are also valuable sections on getting yourself recognized as an "expert" in your field - leading to radio and TV interviews where you can let people know about your product/service/company. Hatchigan also covers what not to do, including the infamous "soup to nuts" speeches where you overload your audience with too much information. She also cautions budding publicity hounds to use "publicity stunts" with great care - don't let the stunt overshadow what you're trying to promote. This reminds me of commercials that I see all the time, witty, memorable skits that leave you humming the tune but wondering what they were trying to sell.

Knowing how to attract attention to your business - or your blog, or your podcast - is important. Being able to create not only an impression, but also a memory - and a good one - is also important. How to Be Your Own Publicist shows you how to do both.

Filled with checklists and call-out boxes, this book is crammed with many great tips...and it's an easy read. Being a marketing consultant for small businesses, I especially like Ms. Hatchigan's material on "Becoming an Expert". Other good sections cover "The Basic Press Kit Ingredients" and "News Release How-To's". Don't be surprised if many pages of your copy become covered with highlighter.

I've your fantastic book, How to Do Everything with Your PC, and I do have to say it's the best book I've purchased yet! It's answered just about every question I've had. Just about everything a person can think of about using a Windows PC is answered in this book, from doing my email, getting on the Internet, even making digital movies -- it's answered in this book.

A great deal to offer even the more experienced users

How To Do Everything With Your PC is more than a simple introduction to personal computers. Robert Cowart has written a thoroughly "user friendly" and comprehensive guide to how even the most novice computer user can take full advantage of all the capabilities computer technology has to offer them. Every aspect is methodically covered including selecting the PC that best meets a particular need; effectively using the Windows operating system; customizing the Web browser; upgrading equipment and troubleshooting problems on the system with ease and confidence; getting connect to, and efficiently using, the Internet; managing personal finances on the PC; building a home computer network (including a wireless network); manipulating digital photographs on the PC; creating a "digital jukebox" with the PC; synchronizing data from the PC to a handheld device or laptop; and much, much more. How To Do Everything With Your PC is very highly recommended for those new to computers -- and has a great deal to offer even the more experienced users.

If you're looking to get the maximum use from your PC investment, this is the book to read. The book gives you concise information on how to set up your PC and perform routine maintanence. There's also sections on using peripheral hardware, setting up your own Web site, and using with the software that comes bundled with most PCs. I learned volumes by reading this well-written, easy to understand book and can highly recommend it to anyone who owns a PC and wants to get the most from it.

Review Date: 2003-12-07
I have read the entire book and enjoyed every minute of it. The most important thing however is this: Cowart's book is very, very good, and he is more than knowledgeable in his field. The book is one that you will retuirn to time and time again, for answers. You bought, or are thinking of buying it for one reason: to learn more about your computer. This book has all the answers to probably 95% of the questions you may have. It covers nearly everything about computers that readers want to know and to learn. It is easy to understand, and for the person who is new to computers, this is a must. It has a well thought out Index which is also of importance to those who don't understand their new machine. For more experienced users, this book is for you too. It's a reference book you'll enjoy, and use, for a long time.By the time it becomes obsolete, I expect Robert Cowart to write an updated version; but that time isn't anytime soon.

Most readable computer book I have ever bought

Review Date: 2001-02-26
The book was actually for my wife (who hates computers and hates manuals even more), yet needs them in her business. She keeps the book on her desk as a reference. It does not use technobabble and is not boring. The index is good. It is written a lot like asking a friend for help. It is not intimidating. Now I am about to order another one for myself.

The format and content was unusual - light hearted and entertaining, yet helpful and complete. I have been using computers since working on mainframes in college in 1958. Even with this background, I found the book helpful and informative. I often get phone calls from friends and customers about their computer problems and have already purchased three additional copies of the book for their use.

I highly recommend the book for all users from beginner to veteran.

This book makes for some very compelling reading. It is not often that I read a book that delivers the goods... but these authors have nailed it. It uses both traditional and dot com companies to illustrate ways any company can leverage the Internet to gain customers at substantially reduced costs. This book has everything you need to implement a successful e-mail campaign. From how to identify good email lists to how to create the right message. Including dos and don'ts, front-end tips and back end response analysis. Has just the right balance of technical and practical information. I am a marketing manager working for a 'Fortune 500' company. The information in this book cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars to find out. Some things are so important, I wish I thought of them myself or discovered them sooner. I can't wait to try some of these techniques out and see the effect on my next campaign. I am recommending this book to everyone I know. Buy it!

Best E-Mail Marketing Book In Print
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-24
I bought this book because I know the authors by reputation. My company was a traditional mail order company. We used to sell all of our products through our printed catalog. The Internet has changed all of that. Half our budget is now dedicated to e-mail marketing.

I applied the Author's recommendations and saw my e-mail response rates take off. On the most recent campaign, I saw a 247% lift in response resulting from the use of just one of their techniques.

The book is written in very clear and concise language. It's methodical and step-by-step method worked wonders for my company's program. I've read all the other books currently on the market, they just don't compare. If you're new to e-mail marketing or a serious pro, this book has information that you can put to use right away.

The tips and tricks in creating an e-mail program were dead on. I especially liked the chapters on the type of products that can be sold via the Internet and the characteristics of a successful Internet Buyer. The "Multi-Mailing" idea alone was worth the price of the book.

This is the definitive book on e-mail marketing

***** FIVE STARS***** Excellent..... If you are an executive looking for information on how email marketing will impact your business, you'll want to read this book.

If you want to know how the pros are using email marketing buy this book.

It details the differences between opt in permission based lists, and SPAM, and how to avoid the pitfalls that can literally kill your business. It comes complete with information on where you can find the best email lists and email marketing services in the business.

It identifies the different types of copy, formatting, text Vs HTML, rich media, etc, and provides insight into which may be best for your business. I've been asking everyone about timing of our messages. No one was able to give me a clear answer that made any sense. This book gave me great insight into the time and day that is best for me to do my email transmissions... and the auothor's information produced immediate positive results for us.

Aside from the practical knowledge, I also liked this book because the author's share the latest thinking about where this medium is going, and what steps to take today to make sure that your business reaps the rewards of the future.

This book is not just for dot comers. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone involved in the sales and marketing of their company's products and services.

This book is now the definitive resource on email marketing.

Great book for a new marketing medium

Any book that Bob Bly is associated with is bound to be good--no, great! And this one is no exception.

The author explores this new, exciting medium we call email and uncovers its powerful potential for direct response selling. It leads you through the basic techniques of marketing through email. What works and what doesn't. Most importantly, it steers you clear of potential pitfalls inherent in this new medium--like how to avoid spamming, etc..

A great book on email marketing that is thorough, timely, and bound to become a classic in its field.

I knew the players but I never knew how they played the game. I was truly moved and inspired by the dedication of the forensics students and motivated by their determination. This book isn't uniquely for teachers but for students of all ages because as we go on in life, we can always come to know, as the book states, that "class is never dismissed".

Karen O,lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, gets it: "It's important for kids to feel bigger than they usually do. We're trying to make you feel a little bit cooler than you might actually be." Many American teachers don't get it. A lot of teaching today is either boring [2/3 of classroom time is talk and 2/3 of that is the teacher talking] or painfully judgemental[grades, the red pen, do and don't instructions]. It doesn't take a genius to see kids natural talents and creativity are being stifled.
Enter McCutcheon and Lindsey--Lindsey is a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient--with their Five Truths. These "Truths", explored in a clever anecdotal style, are a summation of what the authors discovered during years in the trenches of high school teaching.
But undergirding all the truths are the authors strong commitment to finding value in each student, understanding each student's interest or problem, and chalenging each student toward full potential by helping each student to feel special. McCutcheon and Lindsey get it and now every teacher and parent can too.

Beyond Mere Teacher's Manuals - for Parents, Too

This book is for parents as much as it is for teachers, and it is for students as much as it is for teachers. Heck, it is for any and all people whose lives aren't what they had expected. Or it is for people whose lives are going swimmingly, but want to read a marvelous book.

The fact of the matter is: there is only ONE Tommie Lindsey, there is only ONE Randall McCutcheon, but there are millions of people who could have used a teacher like either of these guys. This encouraging, readable, positive book offers simple advice to many of the seemingly complex questions in life.

Both teachers write well and provide great helpings of How They Did It, and the anecdotes by their students would make a worthy book even if they were published separately.

By the way, teachers should read this book, too. All of them.

Nurturing the genius in every child

While this inspiring book tells us that "it doesn't take a genius" to help students succeed, passage after passage show us how these two dedicated educators manage to bring out the genius in each of the students whose lives they touch. This is powerful testimony to the commitment, passion, wisdom, and strategies of skillful teachers who, first and foremost, believe in their students and honor them as human beings, thereby enabling them to attain excellence, not only in high school but also in life. This is a must-read book for teachers, parents, and others who might be moved by stories of student success against all odds posed by living in an inequitable, race-based society.

A Book to Ponder
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-19
This book is a fascinating mix of direct and indirect communication. The book's basic points are made directly
by its coauthors and then exemplified indirectly by the vignettes provided by an interesting assemblage of their
former students. The coauthors' arguments are clear and unlittered with academic jargon. (For example, what
academics would call "intertextuality" is discussed without invoking the guild's current buzzword.) Many of the
brief student contributions are surprisingly moving.

In characterizing one of Tommie Lindey's emphases, a student writer (Joseph Riley Whitfield Jr.) in fact aptly
describes the book: "...a complex message delivered in common language [that] does not lose its sense of
the profound."

My advice to readers would be to read each of the "five truths" sections, breaking off reading after each to ponder
what it means for them. Considered and pondered, the book has practical and uplifting messages that have made, and will make, a difference.

An essential addition to any English language learner's or teacher's collection! I have been teaching ESL/EFL for over twelve years and was yet to find a comprehensive text to teach idioms. Then I discovered the Join the Club series, the first texts that did not have to be supplemented or modified. The numerous high-frequency expressions are made easy for students to learn through example sentences, useful exercises, fun games, listening comprehension activities, new ideas, etc. Moreover, the texts are ideal for busy teachers since they basically serve as "kits." Everything is there; there is no need to come up with exciting, new ways to make the instruction enjoyable. The students immediately respond and have fun learning. In sum, a must have for students and teachers alike!

The book helped me most in the following areas:

1) What is involved in kitplane construction - risks and benifits, even the benifits of purchasing a used certified aeroplane.
2) Showed me how to think in terms of aviation building with safety as a priority.
3) Covers info from the kit purchase stage to the test flight.
4) Emphasized that it is helpful to understand all forms of construction (metal, wood) no matter what kind of aeroplane you are building. The book covers composite, metal, metal monocoque, wood construction.

This is a must buy for people who are wondering what it takes to build a kitplane and are undecided about whether they should build one.

This book is not biased in stating everyone can build a homebuilt. Infact early on Ron makes it clear that homebuilding is not for everyone. He takes you through the different construction materials as well as things that you don't think about. The case studies are what realy makes this book standout. These are planes being built by people with the same amount of aircraft construction as any person contemplating building.

This book was such a surprise. I often judge a book by its cover and this cover was very bad. I loved this book. It had me hooked from the first chapter. I actually read it a little slower than most because I didn't really want it to end. There was a definite story besides the hero and heroine. The villain was awesome. He was so well developed that you actually hated him. That is rare. There was just enough lust and not too much. I hate it when every second page is the characters denying that they want the other. There was some of that but it was still interesting. I only have 6 keepers and this is one of them.

It's on the Keeper Shelf!

Mrs Hill is a very gifted author. I read this book about 7 years ago and have kept it on keeper shelf ever since. The characters in this book are very believable with the exception of Henry. Taryn and Garret have alot of emotional moments between them and Mrs Hill writes it in a way that the reader can "feel" what they are going through. The secondary characters in the book are great to. I can't see Simon as a villain. I see him as someone with honor and a lonely life ahead. I would love to see his story or any other Medieval book that Mrs Hill would choose to write. I have also read the book Hearts Enslaved and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed this book (it's also on my keeper shelf). The emotions are just as intense in that book as in this one. So please Mrs Hill, when life becomes less stressful and the creative urge strikes again, I will be one of the first in line to buy your books.

It's always amazing to me to browse the used book section and discover a good book published years ago I somehow missed! As soon as I finished this book I looked up the author.(This at 4am in the morning!) I hope she does take up the pen again. She has that special "spark" that draws the reader in and it would be a pleasure to see her continue writing and watch her creativity develop. This romance, set in England in the 1100's, tells the story of a "tormented hero" who inadvertantly finds himself taking the charge of an "educated (for the times) woman" away from her "wicked and greedy" brother. The hero has her fake being his mistress in order to give her a place in his household but the king (who is unaware they are pretending) won't have it, and forces them to marry. Neither wants this, although the hero finds himself attracted to her, the tragedy of his first marriage left him cold and bitter. She is unaware of this and although not clueless to the fact he doesn't want to marry, she is determined to make a place for herself in his world. Reading as they overcome their conflicts, assisted by a wily, plotting servant (who thinks she knows best) and a knight with a mysterious past and you have a story that keeps you reading until 4am! ......and Judith?....WRITE Simon's story and put us out of our misery!

Excellent reference for supply chain improvement

James Martin's book, "Lean Six Sigma for Supply Chain Management: The ten step solution process", is an excellent resource. It is written for supply chain professionals to explain six sigma process methodologies and how they can be applied to improving real business processes.

Mr. Martin does an excellent job of pulling together a broad set of information to explain these quality improvement methodolgies and how these can be applied to supply chain processes. He has created a great reference. This is the type of book that you want to read while your working on a process improvement project. The concepts are directly applicable.

This is most definitely a book for Supply Chain and Operations Management practitioners. If the reader is looking for a high level review of the subject matter, I would not recommend this book. This book is a serious, dense study of the material with practical applications and techniques.

Of the various industry texts that I have read, this is probably the "slowest read" mostly because there is so much content and meaning in each section. At the same time, the book design is modular so that the practitioner may skip chapters and study just their focus area. Mr. Martin definitely displays his expertise with fluff-free, accurate, and useful information. A must read for people serious about transforming their supply chains.

For me this book provided exceptional details with which to get your supply chain failures and problems under control. The section covering "Root Cause Analysis" presents the reader with detailed descriptions and examples of analytical methods useful for evaluationg the data associated with the supply chain process. The book demonstrates the myriad of elements that can run the supply chain process into a company quagmmire. This reader felt quite familiar with a number of the typical sins that cause supply chains to malfunction at the most crucial times in a company's commitment to a timely delivery process.

Graham Chapman is a comedy genius, and this is more proof.

Makes me wish there were five volumes prior to this one

My mom got me this book for Christmas four years ago, and I could not put it down. Back then, I wasn't really reading for pleasaure, but I knew this book would really get me started! I found Chapman's autobiography to be rather silly, but serious at the same time. He has been my tied-for-first favorite Python (next to Idle) since the first time I watched any of their sketches and The Holy Grail, but this book made me love him even more. I really got to see a different side of this comic genius, and reading about his struggles to gain acceptance and respect, along with his trials when it came to put down the booze, made me only appreciate him that much more. Four years later, this is book is still in my top-three favorites of all time! I would recommend this book to any Python fan.

"Come to think of it, most people like a good laugh more than I do, but that's beside the point!"

Is there any way to encapsulate Graham Chapman's great comedic talent? No. But he tries in his own autobiography, anyway. A gift to those of us who truly appreciate the absurd from the master himself, this book is a must for anyone who enjoys Monty Python and those who just don't get it. After reading this book, I feel I understand this great pouf even more than watching the Python movies.

I'm just sad that his last video appearance was in an Iron Maiden video...

One of the best I've read in a long time.

I really enjoyed this book even though it is kind of confusing and wierd. Graham Chapman has always been my favorite Python because of his humor but this book shows antother side to him. If you don't like him before you read it you wiil afterwards. A bit after the end is touching and also very funny. This book isn't for everyone and you might not like it even if you are a Monty Python fan. If you are looking for a laugh a minute book in true Monty python style look somewhere else. Not to say that the book doesn't have some funny parts but it is also pretty serious. I also wouldn't recomend it to anyone under the age of 13 because some of the contents of the book aren't apropriate for smaller children. But if you think you will like it by all means read it because it really is a wonderful book.

Classic

Not your typical autobiography by not your typical writer. A Liar's Autobiography is a now-classic look at the life of Graham, written by Graham (and others) at a time when he felt that, due to his alcoholism, he was not long for planet earth. This proved to not be true (he survived another 10 years and did not die from alcohol-related causes but cancer). At turns hilarious, silly, touching and sad, "ALA" will leave the reader with a much greater sense of the looniest of all the Pythons who was, at heart, a very shy and serious man. By all means BUY THIS.
