I read Front Porch Princess on a trip. Each evening in the hotel while my husband played laptop solitaire, I read. I loved the heroine and her best friend the beautician. And I loved each of the small town characters that added so much to the story. I usually don't enjoy chick or momlit because I hate whiney heroines. But Elise was no whiner and a fresh new heroine for me to love!

Can't Wait for the Next Book in this Series!!!

"Front Porch Princess" is one of THE BEST books that I have read in a long while--the only sad thing about it is that it went by way too fast--I started it on a Saturday and finished it the very next night! It is such a wonderful story, and the seamless way the story and the characters are woven together is just incredibly beautiful! This story made me laugh; it made me think; and it brought tears to my eyes more than once! Elise, Bernice, and Annie and their families quickly became friends of the heart, and I simply can't wait to see what happens next in the town of Pritchett! It is refreshing to read such a rich and powerful story with characters who are REAL and are learning what it means to live in the fullness of God's grace and love throughout their everyday lives. This inspirational book is sure to be a blessing and an encouragement to Christian women in every season and walk of life!

This was the story of a 40 year old wife and mom who's let bitterness take root in her life. Kathryn Springer does an excellent job of making a woman who could be very unsympathetic a very likable and human character. I was quickly drawn into Elise's life and mind. Generally not a fan of fiction written in 1st person I was surprised at how well it was done and how well it worked.

To say that I empathized with Elise would be an understatement, many of the issues she faces in the book (like looking forward and not back, having a real, dynamic relationship with God vs. a surface relationship) are issues I am currently facing myself. And reading a fiction book that touches on my current life issues is something I always enjoy. Reading about how Elise dealt with what was going on in her heart, life and mind really helped me to make forward progress on my own things. As an aspiring writer I think that's some of the highest praise you can give a writer.

I was so touched that the book really made a difference in my life. And I pulled out my bible to read more about the Proverbs 31 woman!

Also a huge plus for me was the fact that Christianity was not overplayed. It was simply another layer of several of the characters in the book, seamlessly woven into their making and very believable. Not once did I feel preached at and not once did I feel like I was reading someone else's opinion of what faith should be like and how it should be loved.

This book is an excellent read and I'd highly suggest it for any woman looking for a down to earth, honest look at marriage, parenthood and faith. Enjoy!

Loved it!!!

Well written, moving story of God's presence and love and plans for his children including a 40 year old woman who appears to outsiders to "have it all" but who isn't really convinced of that herself. Elise moves from a "see you on Sunday" relationship with the Lord to a relationship with God as a real presence in her daily life. The story isn't remotely preachy. The characters talk about God the way my friends and I talk about God. He's with us and he cares about everything that concerns us at all times. Every single character is lovable; you'll wish they were your flesh and blood friends so you could call them up and see what's going on with them today. I look forward to reading more about these characters in future books.

Absolutely Wonderful!

A small town where everyone knows everything about everyone, and one woman has dreamed her entire life about escaping Pritchett. Having won a beauty title in her teens, Elise dreamed of becoming a model or an actress. Life had different plans in the form of a handsome farmer. Elise settles reluctantly into small-town life, wanting more for her daughter. When her daughter enters Elise into a Mrs. Proverbs 31 pageant, Pritchett, Wisconsin pulls out the red carpet, complete with a parade and an ice cream social.

As Elise prepares for the pageant, she discovers much more about love, beauty, friendship, and God, learning to be content in her circumstances.

Front Porch Princess is a delightful read. Kathryn Springer has the reader running a gauntlet of emotions. Don't read this book unless you're prepared to not be able to put it down! Absolutely wonderful. - Cynthia Hickey, author

This is an excellent book on b2b direct marketing. The book strives to give a broad but balanced overview of the subject and also try to convince the reader why direct marketing is the way forward. You will not regret reading it, especially if you are new to the subject or need convincing.

However, if you are already an experienced practitioner looking to fine tune your implmentation, you may find the book lacking some tips on the execution side. The book tends to focus more on general methodology. None the less, it is not an exageration to say it is a must have, on your book shelf if you are involved in B2B marketing at all.

Very good, and insightfull book - must read

I need to say that after Lead Generation for the Complex Sale: Boost the Quality and Quantity of Leads to Increase Your ROIManaging Sales Leads: Turning Cold Prospects into Hot Customers - those 2 books I was not expecting anything new, even because this one is older than those 2.
But!
I was wrong. This book offers a lot more another type of information, than mentioned above books does, and for your library you must have all of them.
In this book, you will find:

- Special insights on lead nurturing (author calls them as lead development)
- Special thoughts about B2B customer loyalty issues - till now, no B2B books are covering this important topic;

What is bad, that author concentrates too much on lead classification by NAICS codes - that is what you can not use, if you are not selling in USA,so for me as international sales manager, and outside USA this part of book is not useful.

Good book, you will not be dissapointed

This book is a wake-up call for marketing and sales organizations. The old ways of going-to-market are no longer effective in today's business environment.

John Coe clearly understands the new sales paradigm and what it takes to be successful. He shows readers what it takes to:
- Break through the marketing clutter and get noticed.
- Obtain high quality leads and convert them to sales.
- Create and execute an effective campaign.

From the very first page of this book, I was hooked - and I'm a pretty discriminating reader. As someone who specializes in new product launches, I'm pretty cynical about most books since they just keep regurgitating old, time-worn strategies and tactics.

This book is different. Well worth the investment.

John Coe's New Sales Coverage Model explains a holistic approach to marketing, which aligns marketing and sales together.

If you're like most readers you will be tempted to skip over the fundamentals that John Coe lays out such as database design, planning, and micro-segmentation.

The thing about marketing is that many marketers enjoy the creative process but few have the discipline for execution. Coe's book lays out an effective strategy, which requires teamwork and a shared vision involving all players.

This practical book lays out step-by-step what you need to do to sell more and spend less. Great book!

Review Date: 2007-07-17
The Get-To-The-Point Success Reader Volume 1 is a compilation of articles about success and how individuals achieve this success. Success, in this case, is defined as achieving your personal ideal. In other words, you will be most successful when you strive to achieve your ideal self and find your own unique niche. Basically, as one article states "Wrapped up in every human being there are energies which, if unfolded, concentrated, and given proper direction, will develop the ideal". Common threads in these articles include the beating the fear of criticism, changing your pessimistic dominating thoughts to more optimistic ones, and shear stubborn perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible challenges.

The Get-To-The-Point Success Reader Volume 1 is a very uplifting, inspirational book. This book reminds the reader that dreams can only be achieved if he or she moves towards them. Many of the articles, quotes, and quips remind the reader of this fact. This book also realistically states that fear, criticism, and other various challenges are all part of the process, few individuals get success handed to them.

The Wisdom In Their Words Still Applies Today

Even with technological advancements, changing methods of doing business, and a changed lifestyle there are elements of success that are as applicable today as they were over 50 years ago.

Rodney Ohebsion, the editor of the book, "The Get-To-The-Point Success Reader, Volume 1", has taken the works of Napoleon Hill, Orison Swett Marden, Samuel Smiles, Herbert N. Casson, and Charles F. Haanel and selected sections of their work that are key to success, not only during the time these authors wrote them but for today's time. Rodney has eliminated sections that are no longer relevant today. He also gives you a brief biography of each author.

The title of the book truly fits the book as you do "get to the point" quickly. It is amazing that the works of these authors and the wisdom in their words still apply today.

I would highly recommend this book. It is a unique book that gives you the knowledge and wisdom of many legendary authors with the key elements of success!

Great launching pad to discover classics of self-help

Review Date: 2004-12-05
The editor, Rodney Ohebsion has a good idea. Sift through eight classic books dealing with "how to succeed" and condense them to 240 pages of the best-of-the-best concepts. Cull out the shiniest nuggets of advice and put them all in one place, so today's reader (with the attention span of a gnat) doesn't have to wade through a bunch of boring stuff to get what they need.

And indeed, the Success Reader is packed with nuggets of wisdom. It's interesting, fast reading. Still, here is my basic problem with this approach: The passages that made the grade here are the ones the editor found most insightful at the time he put this compendium together. As an avid student of this type of book, I've read some of the volumes in their entirety, some many times. And what I've found is that each time I read, I get something different--and I suspect I glom onto the passages that are most relevant to whatever my issues of the moment are. So some of the passages Mr. Ohebsion included are the same ones I have highlighted in my much worn original copies of these books--but some are passages I skimmed and obviously didn't find so interesting. And some of the gems I underlined and starred were not included.

Still, that's not to say the Success Reader isn't a worthwhile investment. Particularly if you are not familiar with the works of Napoleon Hill, Orison Swett Marden, Samuel Smiles, Herbert N. Casson, and Charles F. Haanel, this book is a fantastic introduction to their concepts. These guys were some of the pioneers who inspired uncounted later books on positive thinking, creative visualization, strategies for success, and overall life satisfaction. They wrote these books before there was a "Self-Help" or "New Age" section in every bookstore. But be aware that this condensed volume is only a launching pad. If the writings of one or more of these authors pique your interest, get the original texts and read them in their totality. See if you don't pick up a few more gems of wisdom you need.

More than 25 years ago, I took part in a self-help workshop entitled "Money Love." Having thought of my poverty with virtuousness for years, I found it hard to sign up for a workshop dedicated to improving my material lot, let alone absorb the message of the instructor shared with us. One of the many books she included was Napoleon Hill's `Think and Grow Rich.' Now at that time, this seemed a preposterous title. How could you do such a thing. Yet, I am here to report that Hill is correct, "What the mind conceives and believes, it will achieve." Yes, you do have to have an idea of where you are going if you intend to get there. And, you have to risk - or "go out on a limb to get the fruit." The biggest risk of all of course is changing the way you think. We humans tend to cling to outmoded thinking long after it no longer serves our purpose.

In THE GET-TO-THE-POINT SUCCESS READER, Rodney Ohebsion has compiled the most salient points from books by Hill and others (Orison Swett Marden, Samuel Smiles, Herbert Casson, and Charles Haanel) who long ago pointed the way to individual success for those who would read, absorb, and practice the principles they taught. I can testify that this material really works in terms of material success and position. Within ten years of being introduced to the material, I moved from a minor position in retail sales to that of an executive with a large corporation, and I did it during the dismal 80s.

Will it work for you? I don't know, but I am willing to bet if you read it, absorb it, and take it to heart it will. I am so immersed in this material, that I am not a good judge of whether a "quickie" version has the same effect. However, if you have read the books summarized in Ohebsion's book, his little "get-to-the-point" book is a good refresher, and if you haven't read the books, his book can give you some insights into the material in the original sources.

Ohebsion has provided the reader with a quick reference to carry around and dip into as time permits. You can carry the book in your back pack and read it standing up on the subway, while eating your lunch on a park bench, or in your favorite chair at home. Go ahead..take a risk and read it.

We chose my sister-in-law to be our baby's godmother and she had some questions about what it entailed. I got this to pass along to her to answer some of her questions. This book covers many perspectives, from various religious veiwpoints to more secular ways of looking at godparenting. I found the personal accounts to be the most helpful in explaining how we felt about baptism and godparenting ourselves. I think this book could be helpful to anyone baptizing a child.

I loved this book. It is well researched and provides wonderful information on the rituals and customs of introducing a baby into a family/community. It's a good read for the religious and non-religious as it covers all aspects of the subject. Tender stories from Godparents and Godchildren are woven into the book. You can get some good ideas on developing rituals and activities with your Godchild that become future cherished memories. It makes you stop and remember how precious an experience it is to Godparent a child. It is a delightful book to present as a gift to parents, Godparents, and Godchildren. A very good book!!

Just for kicks I entered Miriam Ungerer on a search engine and was really surprised AND pleased that this book was reprinted. It has been my favorite cookbook. I own a 1973 Viking first edition and while I haven't worn it out, I use it a lot.

I cannot name a favorite recipe, they all are good, and even if they are nothing I can fix (Mussels Dumas appear interesting, but I am potentially terminally allergic clam-like shellfish) they are informative. She gives practical wasy to cook most anything if you know how to cook and just need a nudge on ingredients. And she gives good ways to cut corners and make good meals while saving money.

And it is just as useful today as it was when I was a young housewife just starting out.

Hats off to Miriam Ungerer for producing such a good work.

I got this on a remainder table last month and have been reading it ever since. Reminds me of when I discovered Elizabeth David (also on the remainder table!) a dozen years ago. This book is a classic, and should be in every good cook's library, even if you aren't watching your food pennies. I love the eclectic mix of American regional food and good solid French peasant cooking. You will also find reliable discussions of the classic stocks and sauces of French cuisine. Furthermore, she tells you how to make yogurt from scratch!

I first picked up this book in the '70's when I was living "off the land" in Colorado. It worked then as well as it does now; with time-tested, not be be had elsewhere, recipes. I still find myself caught up in her funny, entertaining writing style. And the recipe for Brunswick Stew is not to be left untested!

The book is so easy to read - simple to understand and effortless to apply the concepts contained therein to one's own life. This is a book that would be perfect for anyone. Valerie Ramsey understands the true wisdom of beauty--that even though it is outwardly visible, its true source comes from within. Perhaps that is why all treatise on beauty should be written from the perspective of someone, like Ramsey, who has lived a life that allows for true beauty to flourish. Aging is bounded by time, beauty is not. And so, Ramsey, in prose that is clean, compelling, and--most of all--entirtely applicable, demonstrates what is so obvious and yet, for our youth obsessed world, often overlooked in terms of how to cultivate beauty, grace, and soulfulness throughout our lives.

I never met Mr. Crane personally but I have had dealings with him on somewhat of a political and personal nature. I found Mr.Crane very helpful on both an informational and a personal level. I have had many problems and he always gave me inspiration to drive forward. He told me he was writing a book, and the first thing I thought was that everyone in the world is writing a book nowadays. Since Mr. Crane was so kind as to give me guidance in times I needed it, I first felt like I owed it to him to give his book a read, after all, the only thing I seem to read nowadays is legislative briefs that are filled with legal mumbo-jumbo that would put any normal person to sleep. I started his book late one evening, and I can honestly say, for the first time in my life, I read a book front to back without stopping. I have tried to read other books, but soon got board with the endless fluff some writers use just to fill pages. This is not the case with Mr. Crane's book. It is totally fascinating because it was such an easy read, that I did not even realize that I read the whole book before I put it down. I highly urge everyone to pick up a copy, and I can rest assured that anyone that does read Green Is The Valley, Blue Are The Hills, will probably have the same impression that I did. It is a hidden treat that I hope many others will enjoy. What I read was out of a since that I owed him that much, but after I did read it, I was glad I did. You will feel like you are walking side by side with him on his journey. It took my mind off the many problems I have.

An Appreciation Of The Past

Thomas Crane initially commenced upon a genealogical search of his family. This search eventually resulted in an emotional journey to his forefathers' roots in Ireland.

As many who have ventured on a genealogical search will testify, a genealogical search is no small task. The task is especially hard for a family of modest background, as was his.

Mr. Crane's meticulous research and persevering endeavors for answers to his questions are tributes to his dedication as a family historian and genealogist. In creating his journal, he has written an emotional and personal story of his search for his family origins. Additionally, his poems lend a poignant emphasis to elements of his story.

I recommend this book very highly to everyone who has even a remote interest in genealogy. I would also recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the social history of America's 19th and early 20th centuries.

Tom Crane has written a heart-warming tale of his search for his ancestors. This book is not only a wonderful, personal, journal of his search for his family history, but a great guide for anyone interested in doing the same. His poems are poignant, the personal photos bring a connection to the characters within the pages. This book is a must have for everyone, casual reader or family historian!

Vanderkam's book is insightful, well-researched and, most importantly inspiring. It is filled with compelling case studies and tips that motivated me to explore a new career path. I have since hopped from the grid, am working from home and doing what I love!

Insightful, practical, well-written

Grindhopping provides a look at living life outside the box. The decision to take the veer off society's typical path is a difficult one, and Vanderkam offers assurance that, provided you're willing to put in unfettered enthusiasm and hard work, this path can be a wildly successful one. She also outlines the practical, nitty-gritty details on how to make this lifestyle choice work.

Grindhopping strikes a chord.

Vanderkam offers practical advice for jumping out of the world of the 9-to-5, bosses, and the low and middle rungs of the corporate ladder. The title of the first chapter illustrates the author's straightforward tone and approach for the rest of the book: "Always Be Your Own Boss: No compromises, no excuses". She offers compelling reasons to take this path and practical advice for getting there (e.g. how to find reasonable health insurance, how to keep expenses down, and how to maintain multiple projects in the "Craig's List Economy" to keep the money coming in). Vanderkam draws on her personal experience as a freelance writer as well as a number of case studies of "Grindhoppers" who have found success or are on their way. She also addresses the downsides and risks of striking out on your own head-on and offers sound and empathetic advice for dealing with these. But she also confronts the downsides and risks of staying in the grind to your long term career success and satisfaction.

As with other career/entrepreneur books, Vanderkam stresses the importance of planning, goal setting, saving money, and, of course, networking. Yet, she delivers her advice and personal experiences in a way that feels somehow more authentic than with other books I've read. For example, in the networking chapter, she talks about her own tendencies towards shyness and how she overcomes and works around these. She opens up her own life and experiences to the reader just enough and in a way that is not self-indulgent. She succeeds in striking the right balance between focusing on her case studies and her own trials, tribulations, and successes in the world outside of the grind. Her writing is honest, and at times refreshingly quirky. (Check out the section on hunting mastodon and you'll see what I'm talking about.) Highly recommended.

Tired of killing time in your cubicle? This book's for you!

Why is it that so many career books--unique among how-to books--advise you to settle for less? Diet books don't tell you to settle for being overweight; relationship books don't tell you to settle for dysfunctional partnerships; cookbooks don't tell you to settle for takeout. Yet career books often tell you that the only way to get ahead is to settle for putting in time that feels more like doing time. If you're not the kind of person who can ignore how much cubicle slavery feels like any other kind of slavery, then these kinds of self-help books are no help to you--and no wonder. As Grindhopping makes clear, the days of slow and steady wins the corporate race are long gone. So even if that is your comfort zone, you'd do well to read this book instead of all the others premised on a corporate model that's all but extinct. Grindhopping actually examines those statistics that are always cited to discourage free-lancers and entrepreneurs and exposes how they're skewed. But this is not some unrealistic fantasy book for impractical dreamers. Grindhopping covers common pitfalls first-time entrepreneurs fall into--often by blindly following that same outdated corporate model. It also addresses the very real concerns that keep so many chained to their cubicles: student loans, credit-card debt, health insurance, risk management. But unlike career books that only acknowledge the risks of putting your dreams into action, Grindhopping lays out the just-as-real risks of putting your dreams permanently on hold. In a rapidly changing world, survival of the fittest means survival of the most flexible, and this book practices what it preaches, providing real-life examples from every field imaginable of how the shortest distance from here to your goals isn't necessarily straight up the corporate ladder. Grindhopping refuses to ignore the question: If sitting at a desk all day, every day, putting in face time isn't the most efficient way to get the experience and contacts you need to achieve your goals, then what are you still doing there? Instead this book offers concrete strategies for networking, project juggling, delivering results, and learning what you need to know outside of school. Nor does it advise an all-or-nothing mentality: if hopping out of the corporate grind for a while enables you to gain more quickly the experience and contacts you'll need to hop back in later at a higher level, then more power to you. Conversely, if you need a steady stream of cash to pay off debt or need to learn about a particular industry, then a temporary stint in the daily grind may be to your advantage. The main thing is not to let temporary steps along the path to your goals turn into permanent dead-ends, but to weigh risks and make decisions based on whether or not each move you make brings you closer in some way to where you ultimately want to go. Instead of telling you to abandon your dreams, Grindhopping tells you how to make them a reality.

Hopping around your career options

Grindhopping:

1. Hopping out of the corporate grind and into the work you want.
2. Building a rewarding career without paying your dues.

For the most part, the author is talking about developing skills that will allow you to "hop" into the corporate world at the point YOU want to without putting in all those years of meaningless drudgery and traditional corporate ladder climbing.

The author lays out the characteristics essential to successful Grindhopping, urging her readers to follow their dream and get someone else to pay you to do it. She offers as much 'sage' advice as a 29-year-old can, and gives illustrative examples of her points, shoring them up with statistics. But, I wonder if the 'reader' is hearing what she is saying.

While the external environment and internal motivation may differ between the true Grindhopper and the corporate ladder climber, many of the character traits and advice for success apply to both.

Grindhoppers are people who either by desire to be their own boss or lack of options, have a combined fiscal acumen, the ability to long-range plan and set goals, with a lot of self-control to succeed at controlling their own career destiny, much like the corporate climber.

The advice offered for potential Grindhoppers--know where you're going, work hard, network, get experience, stay ahead of the curve, pay attention to detail--has a vague business school ring to it.

The difference is that the Grindhopper IS the boss - either of her one-woman operation or of others who desire to climb her company's ladder!

While I'm not convinced Grindhopping is as revolutionary as the author wants you to believe, the book is worth a read, especially if you allow it to provoke questions about your own career choices.

We ordered this for my 80+ year old stepdad, and he has found it very informative. He keeps buying extra copies as he gives them away to friends interested in spiritual matters and/or the intellectually curious. One of the things I liked about the book were the brief sketches of different churches' beliefs. The author(s) has/have been fair or even glowing about different denominations, which is a very nice change from the negative reports we find in most of life. As I haven't read all the book, I don't know if they have any 'bad reviews' or warnings about some groups. My only complaint would be that some of the thumbnail sketches were just that, too little infomation. That could be all that was known, or that they couldn't find any or enough good things to say, so erred on the side of caution. Thank you for offering this book (and other items, and for your speedy service). Ms Coburn (L. Coburn-Browning)

I have used this resource in my ministry on a regular basis since purchasing an earlier edition in 1976. I have found it to be informative and helpful in understanding the scope of Christianity in the United States. This is a valuable resource for those wanting a beginning point for research and for reference.

Still a wonderful reference

I had access to older editions of this book in our public library, and finally found one in a used bookstore. I was thrilled to find out it had been updated. I was disappointed to a degree, however. The older editions had many small bodies listed in it, which are nowhere to be found in this edition. I really enjoyed reading about some of these churches (I remember one was down to a single church). On the other hand, I think it is a plus that more coverage is now being given to non-Christian groups as these have grown in recent years in this country.

I still give it five stars, I just wish they had left some of the smaller groups in the book.

A Great Up to Date Survey of American Religious Groups

Our church pulled out of the United Church of Christ in 2001, and our denomination search committee needed a resource to get more information. We were very happy to find this book. At your finger tips are brief sketches of practically every major religious group in the United States. Some of the essays are very brief in nature, while others are pages long. Still, it is an excellent starting point, and for most people who just want the basic facts, it is all the information a person could want on the religious movements in the country. And one of the other things I like about the book is that as far as it it is possible, the authors take a very objective position. No trace of bias or sectarian coloring mars the book, as far as I can tell. There is no way of discerning which denominational perspective the authors write from, and that's the way I like it.

Extremely helpful when researching various group's beliefs. Unbiased, and fair to the individual Christian denominations that number in the hundreds here in America. So many churches. So many groups you may never have heard of. For example; when a certain minister in my church gave testimony that he once served in the Church of the Living God denomination as a pastor, a group formerly unheard of to me, I used this handbook for research into that group's background. I love studying the different beliefs that are a part of this nation's freedom to practice them, according to the dictates of our hearts.

I checked out this book from the library for my 3 year old daughter. We loved it and had a great time reading it with a french accent. We loved this book so much that she is getting it for her birthday to add to her book collection at home. This is a classic. Also check out the other "Happy Lion" books from Louise Fatio.

We love this book! Set in France, this is a story of a Lion who just doesn't understand why all his friends are afraid of him after he walks out of the zoo and into the streets. It is one of my 3 yr old's favorites, and mine too!

I thought this book was from 1982, but it's been "manufactured in Malaysia (whatever that means) in February 2004." It's brand new and in great condition. My only reservation in the rating is that with shipping charges, I paid about 80 cents less than I would have paid at a book store. So I didn't get any bargain.

My two-year-old loves Happy Lion, and her dad & I love reading it with her. It is a kick to hear her exclaim "Bonjour, Happy Lion!" and "Au revoir, Happy Lion!" on cue. The pictures are nice and the story is engaging. We recently bought five copies to keep on hand as gifts for young friends.

an excellent story

my 3 yr old daughter and i chose this book at the library today based on the reviews i read from amazon; and the book did not disappoint. the story is very well written; simple and not too complicated, however, not so simple as to lose the interest of the child/reader. I am finding as my daugher is building her library, that most of her favorite books are the older ones, such as this; with very good and simple story lines, happy endings and simple illustrations. nothing too excitable, scary, or inappropriate for her age. this book would be great for 2yr old right on up to kindergarten.
