When I read "Spirit of the Intimacy" I was really amazed. Such a wisdom, so vibrant... such an ancient knowledge. Ideas totally new for me, but I could feel the Truth in them.
The Dagara village, that place so special... that wonderful community.
I was fortunate of learning about these things.

I can understand that so many people put so much expectations on you.

Then, the fall. After all you are a human being, no more no less.

That is why I bow at you. At the great bravery behind your sincerity.
No pretend to be what others would like you to be, just sincerity, just humanity.
That is wisdom also.

Thanks for your book

Once again, Some has tapped into the wisdom that comes from the Motherland of Black folks. Falling Out of Grace, offers meditations and reflections for the times during one's life journey when we need to be reconnected to the deep, inner core of our being. Mankind is truly more than flesh and blood.

One of the most beautiful and genuinely helpful books I've ever read. Every page had something that I wanted to absorb into my life, and it's written in such a way that it is so easily absorbed into your consciousness. In Sobonfu's books, everything goes back to a connection or lack of connection with Spirit. Everything. And the way she describes Spirit is so elegant and accessible. Highly recommended to anyone who wants guidance on how to view their "failures" and difficulties in a positive light and turn them into opportunities for growth.

One of the most important books you'll ever read

The right book at the right time. It is sad that the message of Sobonfu E. Some does not reach more people. Her message is the true message of living a purpose-driven life. Her message is deeply spiritual that does not dabble into the dogma that plague traditional western religions. Her message is about empowerment by knowing and accepting one's purpose, even if that purpose is one that you flat out deny. It is about embracing failure and using it as a stepping stone to move forward in one's life. It is about how we as a community can help one another when we fall, instead of running from and turning away those that have fallen. It's about not being stuck. It's about practicing humility and going home even when home is the last place you want to be. It is about accepting responsibility with choices we've made and even the choice we made to either stay stuck or move forward.

This is a book that you keep nearby because you will refer to it when you slip along your spiritual path. Despite what is taught in our western culture, it is sometimes necessary to slip or, as the author puts it, fall out of grace so that we can acheive our true purpose.

This is a book that you want to give to everyone you know that have fallen out of grace or to put in lay terms, is going through a bad time. After reading some of the meditations I had to simply pause and reflect because her message hit home with experiences that were very real to me.

There are self help books that are twice the size as this book whose message gets lost in the verbiage and whose message is not one of empowerment but of guilt and oppression and how to honor a higher power that keeps you in fear and oppressed. This is simply a powerful little book and probably one of the most powerful books you'd ever read.

Morgan Hunt's second mystery, Fool on the Hill: A Tess Camillo Mystery brings back Tess Camillo, a smart-mouth lesbian with a varied and colorful past. Tess is a 40-something computer nerd and breast cancer survivor. Her original love was actually mathematics, and computer programming was more palatable than accounting or teaching math. Hunt has created a strong, quirky voice in Tess. Her whimsical associations, internal musical sound-tracks, and slightly skewed world view are charmingly idiosyncratic. After Tess Camillo, a lesbian cancer survivor, stumbles upon the crucified body of rocker Cody Crowne, she just can't help but stick her nose into his murder. Especially since Cody's biggest fan is Lana, her beloved straight housemate. The result is a fast-paced, well-written romp throughout colorful San Diego.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sticky Fingers, the first book in this series. With Fool On The Hill, Morgan Hunt displays even more confidence and tightness in the execution of her craft. Her metaphors are original, her humor crisp and intelligent. One of the things I love about Hunt's writing is that she never dummies down her plot or her prose.

Tess Camillo is a realistic and well drawn character, and her adventures are exciting and diverse enough to appeal to both men and women, straight and gay.

A great who done it!

Morgan Hunt hit the mark again with this mystery set in San Diego. Her breezy style is a great counterpoint to the gruesome murder. Her character Tess Camillo is believable and likeable. The writing is crisp and engaging. I highly recommend this 2nd book in her series. Can't wait for the next one, Blinded by the Light, to be released.

If you liked Morgan Hunt's debut mystery, Sticky Fingers, then this sequel's for you. The humor is as smart and engaging as ever with an even better plot and a creepier cast of suspects. There's a wonderful romantic interlude that explores Tess's post cancer vulnerabilities and provides our heroine some positive strokes (pun intended). Even though she's a lusty lesbian, Tess appeals to straight audiences with wit and wisdom that transcend the usual classifications. This New Jersey lady has come a long way, baby, and you'll enjoy every inch of the ride. Take Fool on the Hill to the beach, but only if you want to stay poised on the edge of your sand chair.

Between being a breast cancer survivor and the serpentine murder attempt on her life (see STICKY FINGERS), Tess Camillo knows she has come a long way baby. The San Diego resident vows to live her life to the fullest and not let her fears get in her way.

Tess and her roommate Lana Maki attend the Gabrielle Leatheross concert; though they are more interested in hearing the opening act, 1980s fold rock star Cody Crowne perform. The next day Tess decides to relax in Torrey Pines States Preserve. When she hears ravens squawking she goes to investigate only to find a crucified Cody. After calling the police, Tess goes home and tells Lana what she saw, horrifying her roommate and her confidante Raj her Welsh Terrier owner. Unable to let the cops do their job, Tess and Lana feel a need to sleuth.

Putting aside the logic of two amateurs investigating a homicide of a celebrity stranger (let alone anyone), fans will appreciate this enjoyable whodunit. The story line is character driven. The mystery is fun especially a late twist as Tess and her Finnish friend compete with the cops and a killer willing to add two nosy females to the death list.

Good book, with some minor problems

Review Date: 2006-06-28
Overall this is a really great book with lots of examples and good problems, however my complaint is that some of the problems haven't been covered in the examples and so they are too difficult to solve. For instance, in the chapter on node voltages, none of the examples covers floating voltage sources that have other components like resistors in series with them, yet a number of the problems involve such floating voltage sources. I had to refer to the Schaum's Outline of Basic Circuit Analysis (another very good book, btw) to find an example problem for that.
If you're looking for books on electric circuits, however, I would definitely recommend this one along with the Schaum's Outline book I mentioned above.

Great

This is a decent start for novice engineers. Unlike other texts on the same subject it has very effective methodology of teaching the very basic concepts of electric circuits. A bulk of solved examples is there to help you understand techniques of circuit analysis. It really soothed me when I was suffering from "circuit phobia". This text is highly recommended by me for beginners.

I am very satisfied with Alexander's book. Compared with any other book in this field, the others actually don't really stand a chance. Why? Because you can actually teach from this book EFFECTIVELY. The pedagogy works here, whereas many other authors have unfortunately failed. The communication works; and the chemistry works too. I think we engineers really need to realize this important issue. And always try to improve.

This is probably the most useful engineering textbook I have on my shelf. Not only is it very easy to understand, but as a reference, I like it even better! The math is lucid, yet never overwhelming, and in addition, the problems are quite interesting. I highly recommend this book, rather than Nilsson's. (I think one of the Authors of this book has written/edited an EE handbook as well, which I am less familiar with. Maybe I'd check that one out too)

I discovered The Gregg Reference Manual as a student in an Executive Secretarial curriculum at a local community college. It was a required textbook at that time. Not only did I come to depend on the book for everything, it has become a permanent fixture in my library of books, and I continue to use it daily. It truly sharpened my grammar and punctuation skills, and I now have excellent verbal and written skills as a result. It has been ten years since I purchased the book, and because the world has advanced in such a short period of time, I decided I needed a more recent edition. I began searching for the Gregg Reference Manual, but I had no success. I had just about given up when I discovered the Amazon.com website. I was really excited to find the book via website, so I quickly ordered it.

No matter how arcane, it's in there.

I'm buying my second copy of The Gregg Reference Manual today since my old one has apparently disappeared. I purchased my first copy of this book as a secretarial student in the early 1980's and have used it regularly for both professional and personal writing and editing ever since. I feel lost without my Gregg Reference Manual. My kids will get lots of use out of the new copy as they write reports and business letters in junior high and high school. I can't wait to receive my new book. It's too bad it won't come with the dog-eared pages I used to mark the most frequently used subjects in my old copy.

A brilliant depiction of all fisheries in Alaska
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-09
I have loved this book since a Kodiak fishermen gave it to me to read in 1995 (thanks Andy, sorry I wasn't able to return it!). Unlike Deadliest Catch, this book chronicles almost every kind of fishery in Alaska as Hank arrives as a wide eyed greenhorn in the 60's and then proceeds to try them all (halibut, crab, salmon, shrimp). Not only the fisheries but the canneries as well where he works his way up to manager before deciding to become a crab fisherman. The characters in this novel are rough, tough, and colorful and we steadily follow Hank's progress as he carves a life for himself in Alaska through hard work, suffering, and an insatiable love of the ocean. You will also learn about the politics behind fishing and how American fishermen had to compete angrily with the Russians and Japanese for the very same fishing grounds before 200 mile limits were imposed. McCloskey is not only a great educator but a great story teller as well. This is not just a text book, this is a gripping novel that you will simply not be able to put down. He will take you through the great Alaskan earthquake, the tsunami following it, and survival in a life raft in the frigid Bering Sea. If you love Alaskan commercial fishing, this is definitely the book for you. As McCloskey says, its the last true American frontier.

I loved this book....

I enjoyed reading this book very much. I did find some of the details a bit tedious & boring...BUT the details really made the story SO realistic! I'll finish Breakers (#2 sequel) tonight & start Raiders (#3 sequel) immediately after. It is hard to believe that Hank & company are fictitious. If you enjoy watching "Deadliest Catch", (on the Discovery Channel), you'll love his books.

The perfect companion to the "Deadliest Catch" series

If you have watched and enjoyed the Discovery Channel series "The Deadliest Catch", this book is a must read.
William McCloskey uses the hero, Hank Crawford as a vehicle for telling the story of commercial fishing in Alaska. The author alternates chapters of fiction with chapters of fact.
If Hank Crawford goes `crabbing', the next chapter is filled with facts concerning the various species of crabs, their life cycle and of gear used to catch them. This is typical of Hank's work in a cannery, and fishing for various species of fish. These chapters are not dull, but just as well written as the fictional parts.
Did you know that one of a Halibut's eye moves from one side of the head to the other, and how this fish can wreck havoc on deck? It's just one of the many facts covered in this book.
Going back to the "Deadliest Catch" series; McCloskey's description of the Russian Orthodox Church, with its twin domes comes alive when you see it in the video. It's like this book was the screenplay for the series.

This is a great work of fiction by the author that follows the main character Hank Crawford who comes from college to go to work at a salmon cannery for Swede Scorden in kodiak with the story following along as hank moves from opportunity to opportunity on fishing boats that catch salmon king crab shrimp and hailbut this describes also many of the characters he works with and comes in contact with and even though this is fiction seems to be right with all info about commerical fishing compared to books i have read on the real thing. This is a great book and i definitely recommend its sequel Breakers.

I make my living teaching about commercial fishing. I am glad to see this book still in print so I can continue to recommend it to my students. It is, by far, the most entertaining and historically accurate account of Southwest Alaska and fishing from the 50's to the 70's. It should be required reading for anyone who fishes crab, salmon, and groundfish out there. Bill is a great writer, and this book is more or less his own experience. It is good for both its historical accuracy and the personal story of what is was like to see our fisheries develop to what they are today. He continues to come here and go out on boats to learn and write more. There is no else one who has the combination of great writing skill and experience in these fisheries, and this book is well worth reading. You will enjoy the story, you will learn something, and you will want to be Bill McCloskey (and live through it, like he did).

As a writer by trade, I've always appreciated the haiku. Without its strict adherence to structure, this form of poetry would lose its inherent beauty. The Houdini Solution is a refreshing take on creativity. It's a great reminder that the box is not a limitation, but a fascinating place to work.

So many boxes have become constructs--intentionally constricting, smothering monsters. Houdini Solutions shows you how to look at a box--a strategy, a problem, a small budget, etc. and think your way out of it. because you can't always trow away the box or the perception people have of you/your client/your issue, etc.

It's sorta like lifting weights--you don't throw away the weights cuz they're too heavy--you figure out how to get strong enough to lift them. (or turn them into a coat rack or something.)

My point is, i dig this book a lot. it's well written by a guy who knows his stuff about marketing and advertising and building brands. you can apply a lot of HS to other business beyond advertising--always the sign of a well written business book (when it can go beyond the industry its written for).

i still hate boxes. but thanks to houdini Soultion, i'm starting to think that maybe a stronger idea instead of a bigger hammer is the better way out.

Great, now even clients know how to get great work.

This is simply a great, revealing read. I probably own every "here's how to do superior advertising work" book ever published, and have even read one or two. But Schenck has finally given up art directors' and copywriters' greatest secret: we WANT to be boxed in. Limitations lead to intense focus and creative, laser-like communications. Who knew? (well, some of us did, but now even clients do.)

Gee, thanks Ernie.

A great book for anyone paid to use their noggin.

A lot of books have been written on the subject of creativity. Many of them written by academics spouting useless theories on how to `be more creative.' This book is different. Maybe it's because Ernie Schenck is such a celebrated thinker in the advertising industry, where your job is not to just think of ideas, but to think of a lot of ideas in a short amount of time and then move on to the next problem. This book goes beyond theory and instead is full of useful advice and even very real exercises on how to think within the parameters of any given problem. The phrase "think outside the box' is, of course, iconic at this point, but Ernie argues that most reinvention and innovation come from actually working within your parameters rather than thinking in blue sky scenarios. He makes a convincing case.

This is a great book for anyone staring at a white sheet of paper and trying to think of ideas. The writing is crisp, fun and intelligent. It's an all around terrific read and very helpful.

Oddly enough this book sat on my shelf for over a year. I was inspired to give it a try after reading John Grisham' A Painted House during a recent vacation since it was based in the same era, local, and lifestyle as my father's childhood.

As a beneficiary of a couple of peach farmer generations, Mr. Tompkins has revealed what life was like before and after the peach bonanza in Campbell. I always felt that the peach orchard life was incredibly difficult. Now I realize that this hard life was an escape from the much more difficult life.

This excellent book is every American's history. There is such an honesty without the trappings of sugar coated memories.

I am taken back to a time I will never experience. In my mind's eye I can visualize the commitment, struggle, joy and heartbreak of a family bound together in their effort to survive. Many aspects of this book reveal the hardships and pleasures of our elders' daily life that we cannot imagine on our own.

This book offers the gift of understanding that deepens our respect for where they have been and how they have come to be who they are.

I recommend it to all who want to understand the fabric and true grit of this country. What a wonderful resource for youngsters in school to read, it lends a greater appreciation for all we have and how we got to this point.

An amazing journey indeed!

Mr. Tompkins' book is a great read! It was even more special to me, though, because my Grandpa Tot was one of the "O'Neals on the next farm over". Their house is in the background of the photo on page 269. Some of the stories, like the one about the "Wild Man of Crowley's Ridge" I can remember from my childhood. Others, though, are a fresh glimpse into history. I drive by the Old Tompkins Farm every day on my way to work. Now, I can not help but to try to visualize what it was like when Mr. Tompkins was growing up, there in the house on Riddle Hill.

Glenn Tompkins wrote this book from his heart. He told stories of how hard it was to survive in the 1930's and 1940's on Crowley's Ridge in Southeast Missouri. The struggles of that time made the family unit strong there was work to be done and you did it. The family never gave up. After getting the book from Glenn's son and daughter in law I found I could not put it down. The first day I read 95 pages. The true stories make you laugh and then cry and I feel I know the Tompkins family personally. I would recommend this book to anyone and I plan to pass it on to my family members to read. Thanks to Glenn for a job well done.

I am a librarian. In my library, I look over all the new acquisitions before they get shelved. Being around books all the time (and being in love with them) I have had to develop strong will-power to set aside interesting books, otherwise I'd never get my work done.

"The House on Riddle Hill" was powerful enough that even with my strong will-power, I was not able to set it down. There is something very honest about this book -- it is about real life, with all the seemingly simple happenings that have the ability to leave a mark in your heart. Here's a story that is a good example: Glenn got a few dollars to buy a pie at the country fair. He didn't have enough to buy the pies of the popular girls, but did get a mincemeat one (a kind he didn't like) from a girl who he hadn't thought of as pretty. But as they sat together and Glenn ate, she said to him so sincerely, "Thank you for buying my pie." They are simple stories, but they strike a heart chord.

I purchased my copy of the book at a book signing where I got to tell Mr. Tompkins how much I enjoyed it. He told me how at an earlier book signing, a woman came up surprised him by throwing her arms around him in a bear hug, and saying "After reading your book, I just feel like I know you!" I can understand this perfectly. "The House on Riddle Hill" is filled with love, so it just seems to bring it out in you.

Even though I haven't broken 100, this book has given me the areas to focus on to break both barriers (100 & 90). Wish this was on Audible, so that I could hear it over and over. Great Job.

I can't believe that I am writing a good review for Mr. Tomasi. I loved this book. It is better than a lot of his other books. I recommend this book even if you want to break 100. It tells you what you have to do to get there. I liked how Mike Adams writes. it is simple and makes you want to go on the course to try out what you read. Get this book. I can't believe this is the same TJ Tomasi. If you want to break 100 or 90 then get this book. it will help you.

The first golf book that I have really understood when reading it. It breaks down many of the mysteries of golf in easily read, easily understood English. The touch of humor, here and there, also adds to the enjoyment of reading this book. In the space of 90 days from first read, I was able to reduce my handicap by 6 shots, win 3 competitions at my club and begin to really enjoy the game. It does work and I have recommended it to many of my golfing friends.

I started golfing regularly (about 3 times a month) last summer, practice at least once a week at the range, took a few lessons and finally broke 100. At that point I purchased "How to Break 90".

This book does an excellent job at teaching course management to avoid the dreaded blow up holes which ruin our scores. You will learn how to break down each hole to avoid hazards and to play within your ability. Instead of blasting a long iron or fairway wood on your second shot to the green of a typical par 4 hole, the author advises you to layup with a shot within your means to achieve your "personal par". There will be situations in which you can take chances and "go for the green", but in most cases, the risk doesn't pay off for golfers of our ability.

This book, together with practice will help you lower your scores. In fact I broke 90 (84) for the first time last month. I still hit plenty of bad shots but instead of trying to pull off a heroic shot to save par, the book has taught me to take my medicine and I usually do no worse than a double bogie.

Besides the outstanding course management help, "How to Break 90" also teaches you a variety golf shots in easy to understand language with a sense of humor. Highly recommended to all weekend golfers who want to improve.

Great book, even for high-handicappers

I bought this book, even though at the time I was trying to break 100 rather than 90. I really liked the way the authors focused on course management and the short game rather than swing changes. I also liked the little bits of humor scattered throughout.

The authors make the point that if you average a 5 on every hole (something they call "Level 5's"), then you will shoot 90. I took this a step further and told myself that if I could shoot Level 6's, that's a 108. So if I could shave a few strokes from there, shoot 5 on a few holes (which isn't that tough, even for me), then I could break 100.

Sure enough, using thier course management advice and focusing on shooting 6's, not thinking about par, I broke 100 several times in the my next few rounds.

I'm now re-reading the book, and practicing some of the advice I thought was too advanced back then, and refining some more to hopefully break 90 soon.

This book truly helped my game....one of the few books I can say that about!

Our unit in Iraq recently received this hilariously funny book in a "Care" package. How wonderful to be reminded of home! The dumb blonde jokes, children's funny stories, church stories hit close to home and our laughter over these little moments taken for granted in our lives makes our homesickness all the more apparent for our beloved United Staes. Each chapter represents a freedom that is lacking overseas here in this country. Chapter VII was especially enjoyed by the troops here. Thanks, Dr. Powell for this gift of home. Holidays are lonesome here, but this book let us laugh and forget our troubles for a little while.

There is nothing to compare this to on the bookshelves in the bookstores. It's definitely worth the wait ordering this book online. Thank you, doctor, for making me laugh today. I love every section, it's the best book ever. Cannot possibly wait for volume two to become available!

I am a staff member for a major southern magazine. We get a mountain of mail every day... manuscripts, books for placement in our magazine. Most of what we receive as far as humor goes is not what our staff and colleagues would buy. A reader sent in this book for possible review by our magazine here in Alabama and I just had to order more copies for my friends! This is really an outstanding humorous book. I recommend it highly to everyone! The staff in our office passed this book around for days. It brightened our day, the humor we had to share in this book. Every page lead to a story that we all had to tell and laugh over. All us of definitely "needed a copy of that!" Thanks to the person who sent it in. Guaranteed to be a bestseller.
