A novel of determination, courage
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-03
Award-winning, Palestinian-born novelist Ibrahim Fawak presents On the Hills of God, a novel set during the creation of Israel. Yousif Safi, a Palestinian man, begins with hope to study education abroad. When the Zionist movement puts pressure on the United Nations, Yousif is frustrated by his fellow Arabs' inability to block inexorable machinations of political powers, and his own inability to prevent the love of his life, Salwa, from being married to an older suitor chosen by her parents. When the Zionists enact their forced takeover, he and his family are brutally turned out; some do not survive the long, hard march to safe refuge. A novel of determination, courage, and ultimately, bearing witness to greed and ruthlessness as land, home, possessions, and dignity are stolen from himself and his people. A powerful, emotionally impacting novel offering a vivid glimpse of Arab life during the era.

Enjoy a great read and learn some history at the same time!

On the hills of God is first a great read. Fans of novels that can carry you away to another culture and time will be fascinated by this book. It is the fictionalized story of three high school friends, and their families and the true, mostly unknown (by most Americans and Europeans) history of Palestine from slightly before WWI through the Nakba "catastrophe" as the Palestinians call their great violent expulsion from their land, homes and heritage orchestrated by Zionists and the West.

Best of all, it is a great story, engrossing, funny and sad.

Christian Arab Voices No Longer Silent

Review Date: 2002-08-16
The Arab-Christian voice is no longer silent On The Hills Of God. Finally, one can read about al-Nakba, the Great Catastrophe, from the viewpoint of an Arab Christian. This first novel by Dr. Ibrahim Fawal, a native Palestinian and professor of film and literature, is one step towards lessening the dearth of literature written from the Palestinian perspective in general and from the Arab Christian perspective in particular. Fawal has produced a thought-provoking book that is basically a first-person account of events that forever changed global politics, told by one of 3 friends, (a Christian, a Jew and a Muslim) who relates the role each of them plays in the uprooting of their multi-religious, multi-ethnic society. The author gives a very personal, human face to the main characters (drawn as composites of his contemporaries) as he describes the destruction of a centuries-old way of life by a virtually 100% foreign-born army in its relentless push for control of land, water and economic resources. One can read the first-hand account of the mass exodus of frightened people from Haifa and Tel-Aviv, and the beginning of more than 50 years of exile and dispersion. These events set the stage for the dramatic drop in Christian population from 60% to 2% of Palestinian society. This is an excellent starting point for a more balanced understanding of Middle Eastern politics without hype or extremism, and led me to investigate related works, like Dr. Edward Said's "The Politics of Dispossession," Thomas Friedman's "From Beirut to Jerusalem, " etc. Also check out Dr. Fawal's latest offering, "Youssef Chahine," examining the filmography of one of the Arab world's greatest movie directors.

Palestinian and Israeli conflict through a teenagerýs eyes

Review Date: 2003-08-23
On the Hills of God is set 50 years in the past, yet is written with such heartfelt fervor that readers will be sucked into the story, as if it were happening in the present. The teenaged narrator, Yousif Safi, gives voice to Palestinians who have lost a way of life because of politics, war, appropriation, and injustice that all continue to the present. Ending on a note that makes peace a hopeful eventuality, this book should attract a wide audience.

A plight of a country ...

Review Date: 2002-08-18
Ardallah .. the land of God .. I really don't know if it exists... but it is where our story takes place in Palestine. The book describes the events that preceded the war of 1948, how the Jewish people settled by force, how the Palestinians reacted and what the Arabs did.. if anything!! It illustrates their humiliating and appalling exodus from their country.
I have heard a lot about it and studied history books, but nothing is compared to the telling of its own people ... to go back in time ... hear and see their miseries ... nothing I can say will express the feelings and confusion of a country... the feelings of entrapment and loss!

A 17 year old Yousif, who like any boy of his age is looking forward to graduate and declare his love to Salwa, is totally crushed and transferred to another world of harsh reality and bloodshed. He fights with everything he has to get his love back and tries to do the same for his country. His vision and the future he foresees is a path of peace to return to his motherland! Hope and optimism penetrate through the clouds of war and death .. of a people who still sacrifices and survives under more than 50 years of violence and oppression.

Fawal describes his country in the most beautiful way ..you can imagine it in front of your eyes even if you haven't been there..portraying its green vast hills, the valleys, the olive and pine trees, the orange orchards and Jerusalem .. a tragic holy land!

This is a very good, perhaps great [?], book masquerading as a "how to succeed in business" tome. It is in reality a powerful handbook for those of us in the 4th period of life to try to make some sense of all we have done, all we have left undone, & what is the purpose of it all. I'm 65; I found this a clever combination of Jung, Jung's theory of the 'shadow', & strong suggestions for living with inner tranquility & financial success; O'Neil is a gifted & insightful writer; I doubt that many under the age of 50 would find this book worthwhile - my opinion. A minor criticism: O'Neil cites 6 - 8 - 10 authorities in this field who have written books; he provides an index; but no bibliography? Why? A very minor criticism. Extremely well done. Easy to read.

It is an amazing journey through our deepest fears and questions about life whether personal or professional. The first part goes through those questions all of us have or have had combined with real life examples and a second part where the author shares his insight as to what to do with all those questions and answers we start to get by reading the book.

I have read this book once before back in 1995. Since then I have learned a lot about shadows. I am aware of my shadows and this book is helping me to be a better person.
I have a friend who is intellegent and smart. However, after reading this book second time I am beginning to know his hubris and. I do not know how to relate with this person.
Knowing my own shadows I am now less critical of others. We all have multi-selves.
The book should be read by any adult who wants to have a balanced perspectives of life and deal with others appropriately.

I first read this book when it came out, at the time the O. J. Simpson story was just breaking. It was PERFECT timing - offering insights into how otherwise highly-successful people can have darker sides show up in their lives unless they periodically renew themselves and take stock - what might be called taking an "internal audit" of oneself. I've often thought the title for this book could have been "The Shadow Side of Success."

I highly recommend this book for anyone who's in a position of influence, power and responsibility (or who WANTS to be). The author has included a rich assortment of ways one can avoid the egoic pitfalls of success and fame - a real MASTERPIECE!

P. Kiameh's "Power Generation Handbook" has been an invaluable addition to the materials I need to sucessfully execute my job. I work in the electrical power industry and Mr. Kiameh's simple and practical approach has provided that extra assistance that allows for easy solution to our every day problems. More importantly, Mr. Kiameh has managed to complile useful and important principles relating to the Power industry in one handbook. I highly recommend this book for technical personnel involved in the Power Generation Industry.

This is an excellent, practical handbook on power generation. It contains clear descriptions of how power generation components are constructed, how they work and how to maintain them. Points in the text are illustrated through numerous detailed photographs, drawings and graphs. Topics include steam turbines, governing systems, valves, lubrication systems, gas turbines, bearings, seals, combined cycles, cogeneration, electrical components, etc.

I have attended two courses taught by Philip Kiameh at the University of Toronto's Professional Development Centre, one on power generation equipment and the other on mechanical equipment. Philip was an excellent teacher and his text books are similarly excellent and I highly recommend them. This text book is a valuable reference to the power generation course material.

I gave this book to my entire business unit. I think most books on business, how to make a company better, etc. make things too complicated. If you really read each point in this book, it just applies to everything we do in both our personal and business lives. It's how I want my co-workers to behave and treat others. Take for example, the first one- "Jump right in or you might change your mind about swimming." In other words- Sometimes don't anaylze too much, just do it. Or "Ask why until you understand"- In other words, if you don't understand, keep talking until everyone does.....etc.. A GREAT BOOK!

Return to Reality

Review Date: 2007-09-16
This is another profound work by Ken Carey. Who are the bird tribes? Those who have lived fully conscious lives,(living in the spiritual and material world) before our time. Some lived as native American Indians in the present day United States, and some have lived elsewhere in the Americas, Africa, etc. We are all part of the original creative spirits who envisioned the creation of spirtualized matter. We have chosen to particiapte in matter's evolution into the idealized patterns that we envisioned. Because our world has lost its living connection to spiritualized consciousness, these tribes of spirits have until this time ceased incarnation. They are, however, still living together on a higher spiritual plane, and can be accessed when we attune ourselves to our original purpose of creation that is in accordance to God's plan. Those who struggle with reincarnation can rest at peace. The opening of the book describes an indian chief who willingly is shot by misguided European troops. Through this incident, he is given access to the thoughts and feelings of those who forged the steel for the bullets, created the bullets, and shot the bullets. He symbiotically ingests all the realities that these people possess. Through his death, however, his love and eventual plans of unity among the nations is passed on to the consciousness of all those who had any part in the bullet's creation and eventual use. As conscious spirits, we have access to all knowledge that has come before us and we can experience any wave of energy created by love that has occurred prior. Moderns have called this the "Akashic Records", and access to these files can explain the "reincarnation" dilemma. We all are interconnected on a subconscious level, and knowledge is indeed a universal pool that can be internally understood by all.
The Bird Tribes formed their "League of Nations" on this North American continent to create a spiritual pattern that would eventually form a similar pattern within the United States. Democracy is the pattern directly related to the pattern that these indian tribes first initialized. The indians knew that their time was limited, but they knew that if they radiated their own "League of Nations" built on love and respect for one another, the pattern would still continue since love patterns live on forever. Therfore, the warring European tribes that caused a virtual extinction of the native indians would begin to feel this pattern of love and respond accordingly. That has taken place with the founding of a democratic nation based on the freedoms of each indivdual, as long as the freedoms of the whole are not jeopardized. It was interesting to note the location of the first activities of this league of nations. Some of these activities took place on the very lands that I now dwell upon. I have a deeper sense of the meaning of my home I built to face the east, toward the sacred mountains. The guardians of the east are still prevalent, and usher in the "New" age already budding from the sacred seeds of that great tree.
This book will unite the truths in all sacred religions, Christian or otherwise that bring us closer to the workings of God and what we have been designed to accomplish as human beings. One will begin with earnest to begin living life to the fullest of their potential after reading this book. The seperation of the herds has begun, but none have to perish. This world is the beginning of many to come, and we must all relax into the pattern that our lives were designed to depict and show. This earth is the first creation that blends the life of a star and that of a stone to create biolgical life. We are the blending of spirit and matter. Our mission has just begun. Soon it will be time to "seed the stars"! Welcome aboard fellow travellers! Life has just begun!

This is the kind of book you read in front of a roaring fire when you're snowed in for days. It makes you feel warm inside and it takes you away into the spirit world that calls your name and tells you all this ain't all that.
This is an older title but it's message is timeless. If you're looking to buy a book that can change your mind about the stress of the everyday, this is it.
We're all spirits having a human experience. We are not Nations, we are not religious differences. We are not racial bias, sexual discrimination or hate. We are teachers. Showing each other who we are on the inside, after journeying to that place, in that moment in this life, where we meet together and live what we've learned and what we have to teach.

That's what this book says in so many words.
And in so many more you'll read for yourself.

i'm a critical reader, not gullible to new age babble, and i'm asking you, if you are drawn to this volume, to please read this shimmering book of hope. return of the bird tribes resonates so deeply. i've read and re-read it, given this book away, cited passages aloud to friends, and it never ceases to move me or those it touches. i wasn't prepared for its effect; it is sheer beauty, sheer poetry, a guide to transgressing our culture of fear and war into a world of peace and love. and that's not hippie hyperbole; it's a call to open your heart and surrender to recognize the truth of our unity, our moment in time, and fly with the bird tribes.

with all love to you,

If you are interested in investing in securities then you should have this book. Although the material is more than 60 years old it remains the baseline for security analysis. This is a reference book, but investors should get into the habit of picking this title up and giving it a read when they have a bit of spare time. It is well indexed and clearly written. There is a lot of historical information also.

I saw this on Simply Quilts and was so intrigued I actually wrote to the author asking if she gave lessons. Then I got the book and found you don't need a teacher. The instructions and illustrations are absolutely so clear that a child could make this quilt. Several reviewers mentioned using these designs on borders -- thanks, I had not thought about that -- good tip. One last thing, I have a sister who refused to learn to quilt. Guess what, she is making a "Simply Seminole" quilt. Gotta love that.

The best business scorecard book

Finally a book that incorporates two powerful concepts: scorecards and six sigma. I have worked on various projects with the aim to achieve operational efficiency and at the same time I have been part of various meetings and discussions to find best ways to "empower" the staff to help them understand, align and achieve corporate goals. Both these efforts have largely been fragmented. The measurement tools to achieve both these goals have, at best, been mediocre. This book provides a comprehensive, more robust and practical approach to bringing the two concepts together.

This book gives a pragmatic approach to not just evaluating performance but also provides easy-to-use tools that help predict performance and profitability. This book provides a much needed scorecard methodology for the 'new' globalized world. A must-read for any business leader.

Praveen, I just have to buy you a cup of coffee or a drink one day. I am just finishing your book, "Six Sigma Business Scorecard " and have to say that I haven't been this riveted to a business book since "The Goal". Books like this for me have been far and few between.

I am writing to congratulate you for your outstanding work on the book you have written about the Six Sigma Business Scorecard. I have spent the past week reading it, and I've realized what a fantastic tool it is.

I am a Six Sigma Intern, and I work at Recofarma, a Concentrate Plant of the Coca Cola Company, located in Manaus, Amazonas - Brazil. I was trying to create a Massive Communication Plan for Six Sigma within the company and one of my ideas was to create a Scorecard for Six Sigma, then I looked for related material at Amazon.com and your book appeared on the top of the list. It surely was a great investment.

I have read a few hundred "non-fictional" books over the years for my MBA, for quality, etc, but I have to tell you that this book about the use of balanced scorecards is the best business related book that I have ever read, and I feel that every CEO should completely absorb it to utilize its "pertinent" applications that are applicable to their business processes, thus institutionalizing the process metrics' continual improvement concepts of ISO/TS 16949:2002 and ISO 9001 in all types of firms, including those that are not automotive suppliers!- Bill Cooper, Global Quality Systems Senior Manager, Lear Corporation

I have over 100 soccer books including goalkeeping books by Wilson, Shilton, Luxbacher, Waiters,Machink and the videos of Machnik, Hoek and Dicicco. Lincoln Philips's book was worth the money and more for several reasons. He has the wisdom of years of playing experience at the the national team level as well as college coaching and USSF Staff coaching duties. He has an excellent discussion on the art of stopping penalty kicks and develops a list of visual cues goalkeepers can use to predict where kicks will go. He examines techniques for prevailing in 1v1 breakaways I had not previously encountered. Finally he has an excellent section on defending restarts which is particularly valuable to the goalie in light of the high percentage of goals which result from poor defensive communication and organization at these times.

The best keeper book available.

I have reviewed many goalkeeping books and own four. This book is by far the best. It is well organized and explains the details of soccer's most difficult position in an approachable manner. It is obvious that Lincoln knows his stuff. If you read it in his book you can be sure of it, which is not the case in some other books I've read. Can't go wrong with this one.

An excellent book and superior value

I knew nothing of goalkeeping before purchasing this book. This book is easy to read and understand, well organized, and full of easy-to-follow visuals. I purchased it to understand our goalkeeper's job and loaned it to him to read. He played keeper for years, and even he learned from it and INSTANTLY improved. An injury prevents him from playing this season. With this book as my only coach and practicing what was in it, we (myself and my defense) earned a shutout in just my second game as keeper. Lincoln Phillips provides coaching in every aspect of goalkeeping and tells you exactly what you need to know. I recommend this book for beginning keepers, experienced keepers, coaches, and anyone else interested in the position and its importance. BUY THIS!
